Waggle to move Wario around, obviously. Also, waggle for jump and waggle for attack. (waggle pause and select too)

It does look good. As good as Fatal Frame 3 on the PS2 at least.

For Wario Land, I just need to know if Nintendo is behind it.  Since Nintendo outsourced the last Wario game, "Master of Disguise" to Suzak, it was crap.  If Suzak is behind this one as well then we already know it'll suck.

But if it's made internally by Nintendo, by the people who made Wario Land 1-4(as well as Wario Land Virtual Boy which was also really good), then F*ck Yeah I'll buy 5 copies.  With the power of the Wii, they should be able to do some really amazing things for the game.

Plus if it's being done internally by Nintendo and it's a 2d game, that gives me hope that Nintendo will release other internally developed 2d games for the Wii.  Like maybe we'll finally get a TRUE sequel to Yoshi's Island done by EAD in the future, or a 2d Metroid as well.  Or better yet, since the DS had New Super Mario Bros, a New Super Mario World for the Wii.

The fact that the game uses the "Wario Land" title in addition to its "hand-made" nature, I think it's safe to say that at the very least Suzak isn't behind the game...

Ehh I don't know, I just recently beet Wario Land VB and I'd give it a 7.5.  It is good, but it's a real frustration sometimes. Especially the final bitch boss.

It wasn't bad otherwise.

Wario Land Shake is sounding like a 2D platformer!

From a blog translated by KobunHeat over at GAF:

Quote
"The definitive Wario platform game may have finally been produced. Even people who just like 2D platformers should buy this."

A new 2D platformer on a console and it's an actual full disc game and not just Wii Ware? I'd kiss you, Nintendo, if that didn't require an insanely long plane ride.

Good idea for a thread.

I love 2D Wario games. I probably played Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 just as much as Super Mario World back in the day. Similar to Jungle Beat it was a fresh twist on the platforming genre.

And it's seems there's more info from Japanese retailers

Quote
- 20 stages
- hand-drawn animation
- 1 player
- locations such as jungle ruins, desert, and ocean
- shake the Wiimote for special actions (shake enemies to grab coins, unearth hidden locations, and more)
- some sort of throwing mechanic via Wiimote manipulation
- vehicles such as rockets and submarines, seems that the Wiimote speaker plays a part in vehicles as well

Hopefully they'll release screens soon.

Well the Wario Land images show the game has a style very similar to Wario Land 4, which points heavily to it being developed internally by Nintendo.

Now we just wait for some movies of the game in action.

A Wario Land Shake would be nice but I can't, I'm on a diet.  Yeah they may have to rename it for the Western release. ;)

I am in full support of a 2D side-scrolling platformer on a console.  Hell ANY 2D game with SPRITES~! on a console is a good thing.  Polygons are awesome, when it makes sense to use them.  But this attitude that sprites should only be used for portables is so stupid and out-of-date.  This isn't 1995.  We now recognize that most Playstation 1 games that everyone thought looked awesome ten years ago look like balls and 2.5D sucks.

But I'm not so keen on "waggle" controls.  That will be the 2.5D ten years from now; the outdated "fad" game design that ironically makes useful new technology look like a dumb joke.  Sega CD FMV games are another example.  The DS has been at a point now where forced touchscreen usage has become rare.  These days when someone makes a good game on the DS where touchscreen usage doesn't make sense they don't use it and we get a better product as a result.  It's not like every SNES game used the L&R buttons.

The Wii can't get to that point soon enough.  The quality of Wii games will be much higher once devs don't feel any pressure to shoehorn motion control into games that don't need it.  Though Nintendo is probably going to have to start including the classic controller (or a Gamecube one) with the Wii itself, something that was obviously unnecessary with the DS.

2.5D sucks.
You did not just insult Klonoa!

Waggle for the sake of waggle is bad.  But shaking the controller to shake enemies down for cash seems pretty reasonable to me (smells like Mischief Makers, which was awesome).  With any luck the rest of the waggle controls will be equally reasonable.

Yep.  I have it for the Cube.  Couldn't really get into it.  Part of that though is that it kinda plays like a beat-em-up but I'm a big beat-em-up snob and it didn't impress me.  I typically don't like the graphic style of 2.5D games.  Sprites almost always look better.  Polygons are something I deal with when a game is in full 3D and thus has to use them.

Though I also don't care for cel-shading.  Seems like maybe I would like it since it's more cartoony, like sprites are but it ends up looking weird to me.  Rendered sprites also look pretty bad, except in DKC where for some reason they look amazing, even over ten years later.

Ian have you heard of a game called Madworld? It is from Platnum games who was previously Seeds and previously Clover Studios the development house that made Viewtiful Joe, Okami, and Godhand. There is a thread about it a page back. That game utilises cel shading. What types of cel shading do you prefer if any?

I wouldn't mind if Treasure is behind the game. They've worked on a Wario game before (Wario World which was decent) and they're quite proficient in creating 2D games. Smoke39 mentioned Mischief Makers a few posts above which was also made by Treasure.

Now I'd agree on that.  Since Treasure is amazing at 2d games, they'd be able to pull it off.  And since the Shake gameplay mechanic, does sound similar to Mischief Makers, Treasure would easily know what they're doing and how to pull it off.

Of course come to think about it, Treasure could actually be behind this game.  A few months ago we heard that they were working on 2 games for the Wii, and one of them was hinted at being a sequel of some kind.  Now a lot of us were quick to come to say a Sin and Punishment sequel, but what if they meant was a spiritual sequel to Mischief Makers staring Wario.  Similar to how Bleach DS was the spiritual sequel to Yu Yu Hakusho for the Mega Drive(Genesis), and Ikuruga was the spiritual successor to Radient Silvergun.

Oh well, as long as it's either Nintendo R&D1 who made the previous Wario Land games or Treasure, we know the game will be good.

But treasure made Wario World.

But Wario World was a 3d game, while this upcoming Wario Land is 2d.  The guys at Treasure are masters of 2d games, while their 3d can be a mixed bag.  That's why they're the only 3rd party company that I'd have no problem with Nintendo allowing to make a 2d sequel to one of they're series.

I don't see the waggle as a fad. I mean games that over-use or mis-use it are annoying but the concept of shaking the controller as an alternative to pressing a button is sound. It simplifies the control scheme and makes the experience more interactive. Mario Strikers used it brilliantly, after getting used to shaking the remote to smack an opposing team-mate it would be hard to go back to having to press a button for the same effect.

I think the waggle is more like the shoulder buttons of the SNES days. Shoulder buttons have become a standard for controllers but back in the early SNES days developers often didn't know what to do with these new buttons and used them for trivial things. Even the SNES's flagship title Mario World merely used them to scroll the screen which was pretty much pointless and I doubt anyone bothered doing so more than once or twice just for the novelty of it.

Comparing waggle to shoulder buttons on the SNES is a brilliant analogy, your description is dead-on and by extension makes a good argument for the future of the remote. Let's hope it stays true. I also completely agree about Strikers, the game wouldn't be near as good with big hits mapped to a button.

Quote
I think the waggle is more like the shoulder buttons of the SNES days. Shoulder buttons have become a standard for controllers but back in the early SNES days developers often didn't know what to do with these new buttons and used them for trivial things.

Shoulder buttons didn't replace anything though.  They just added to it.  Waggle is a replacement for a button press and I'm quite certain that the only reason it is even used is because Nintendo only put two buttons on the remote.  The remote is useful for stuff like Wii Sports where it really feels like you're doing the action on screen or aiming like a mouse and stuff like that.  But "gesture instead of button push" is just what we had before but it requires more effort from the user and isn't as accurate as an on/off digital button.  In three years that kind of motion controller implementation will be regarded as a huge joke.

That's because gestures should be analogue, not on-off affairs.

Tenchu 4? Wii exclusive. Score.

This is progress.

Also good that a DS series (Rune Factory) is coming to the Wii. Sometimes companies benefit on the DS but don't jump off the handheld onto Nintendo's console.

Rune Factory 2 supposedly fixed all the problems with the first game (I hope it's localized...I sorta...put off buying the first one when the sequel was announced...), and this Wii version promises to expand on that, so it SHOULD be a good game (hopefully!)

Well we finally know who's making Wario Land Shake.  It's been outsourced to a company called GOOD-FEEL.  GOOD-FEEL is a new company that's made up of ex-Konami employees, who's notable work was on the Goemon games.

Well even though I'd have prefered Nintendo RD1 or Treasure, the fact that the people at this GOOD-FEEL were involved in the Goemon games is a good sign at least.  The Goemon games were solid platformers, so at least there's a chance this game might be one as well.

I hope. :-\

They haven't touched the series since the DS version that came out the first year of the system's life, so I'm confident that the series is pretty much dead anyway... *shrug*

I wouldn't hold my breath for Tales of Hearts...Namco refuses to localize Tales of Innocence... :(

I think I may need to establish a seperate savings account just to buy DS RPGs in the future.

Supposedly two MORE will be revealed in the next Famitsu, too...

What's with the two art styles for Tales of Hearts?

One more similar to the in-game sprites and the other for the CG cutscenes (yeah, it makes no sense at all...)

I was hoping that maybe the two styles depict different modes within the game's story (so you switch between being a cartoon and "real" character?)...

July 11th Edition

Captain Rainbow (Wii)
~ Skip LTD!?
~ Protagonist is Nick...
~ It appears that there are mini games like golf, bug catching and fishing...
~ Captain Rainbow is a reference to Masked Rider (you can tell from the rainbow belt that he is wearing and his transformation stance...)
~ The island that you will be exploring is filled with past Nintendo minor characters (Yes, that's Birdo!  Hikari is from Shin Onigashima...)
~ Genre: Action

And trailer! (http://www.wipido.com/video/1722)

Tongariboushi and the 365 Days of Magic (DS)
~ Shameless Animal Crossing ripoff...That's all that needs to be said...Shame on you, Konami...

Okay, since Capcom has now set the precedent of downporting a major HD game to Wii, RE:5 plz. Seriously, they have no excuse not to now.

It's beyond me why they chose to show off the premature mess that was Spyborgs and not this.

DR Sports? How would that work, let's see...

Zombie Baseball: A zombie walks up to you, you AIM FOR THE HEAD and try to bat it out of the court?
Chainsaw Kendo: For all you Wii MotionPlus owners.
Lawnmower Rally: Like that cow game in Wii Play but with zombies.
Sawblade Frisbee: Another Wii MotionPlus game. Each limb has its own points value!
Find Myy Corpse: Zombie Miis! Find the one the game declares but be careful, some people look different in death.
Zombie Bowling: Drive a car through them, get their flying limbs to decapitate others!
Zombie Boxing: Zombies shuffle towards you, punch them to bits! Bonus points for hitting others with the flying bits.

This post right here is the perfect game of dark humor, creative ideas, and party game heaven.

I would by that as a stand alone title like Wii Sports Resort any day.  I love the idea of Zombie boxing and slowly watching the person fall apart.

I also love the Saw Blade idea, and limbs are multiple points...and how you could get multiple skills.  It would be nice to do this game also with a deadly Boomerang so you can Arc it back to you and get several hits as it comes back to you.

If by "loli" you mean "not hideous," then yes!

And the female protagonist's clothes are beyond ridiculous...

Heh, another word Americans won't be able to spell. Why didn't they just call it Zodiac, doesn't sound mysterious enough?

Also I still don't get why they have two styles for each character in ToH, was there some reason given for that?

My guess is that it started off as CG-only...When they realized how bloody AWFUL it looks they made the anime version as well, but didn't want to waste the time they spent on the CG...

On the other hand, Ragnarok Online on DS is SEX. But I guess it's too much to hope for an english version?

If you'd like some hope, Konami generally announces new Suikoden titles at TGS, which makes this announcement a bit odd...

Nice boat lights (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BoatLights). Named after Eris, the goddess of strife and discord? Popular name in Japan it seems though maybe they want it to mean Alice...

Nah, I'm pretty sure they mean Eris and Elise, both of which are opposites (Elise's name meaning "consecrated to God"), just as the two girls seem opposite of each other...

Is it wrong for me to be excited about a new Shining Force?  As my avatar shows it is my favorite game series.  I know Camelot is still gone but its finally back to a strategy rpg again.  I can deal with the new style but I'm scared of setting myself up for a fall.  I could avoid Neo because it was arpg for some stupid reason but now they just sucked me back in and I can't not buy this game.  They are obviously putting some money and effort into this with the famous character designer.  Tell me its gonna be ok. Please, somebody?

Phantasy Star Zero is something that I've been wishing would happen for a long time. I played the original PSO on the DC to death, staying up until 2 AM playing it back when that was unusual for me. They immediately lost me when they started charging monthly fees, but now it's back to its roots and I can't wait to get it.

It's basically a live-action game, like those of the the Sega CD era, but with less interactive gameplay...

And I wouldn't know...I don't follow Japanese TV... =)

Japanese TV is pretty much as uninteresting to me as Western TV for the most part (except for GameCenter CX!)

I've never heard of Monster Hunter, but looking at those screens........I must say, I'm at least interested.

Can someone tell me two things:

1. Are those in-game screen shots?

2. What exactly is this game?

I'm surprised Kashogi doesn't know Monster Hunter. I'm sure it has been mentioned a few times somewhere in the forums.

I found  this (http://Http://www.siliconera.com/2008/09/16/sega-making-rpg-now/). It is a new RPG made by Sega. It is suppose to be revealed in the September 26th issue of Famitsu.

Do we know if it has anything to do with the Wii? Knowing Sega it's probably a PS3 exclusive or something.

I'm guessing Capcom will make a Monster Hunter 3 portable version about a year after the wii version to calm those Japanese psp owners.

Suikoden Tierkreis was just announced for US release by Konami.  I'm happy.

They won't need to when Monster Hunter 3 dominates in Japan. People bought PSP in Japan for Monster Hunter, just like they're buying 360 for Tales of Vesperia. Proof that people will actually buy hardware for one game which I guess is a good thing, because technically they can't unbuy it. Yes, they can trade it in, but that first purchase still counts as a sale.

Alright, I'm sick of waiting for better scans, so just deal with these crummy ones for a bit...

September 26th Edition

Seventh Dragon (DS)

~ Director: Kazuya Niinou (Etrian Odyssey)
~ Command-based battles
~ 4 characters in a party at one time, all of which are completely customizable
~ There are 7 classes in the game (Rogue, Mage, Fighter, Princess, Knight, Samurai, Healer)
~ For each class there are 4 different appearances
~ There are skill trees for each of the classes
~ Simple game concept: kill all the dragons
~ The stats include LIFE, MANA, ATK, POW, DEF, INT, SPD.
~ While moving around, the top screen is a top-down map view, while the bottom screen is a conquest map.

Ninokuni (DS)

~ New project from Level 5
~ The animation in the game is all by Studio Ghibli
~ There will be a book bundled with the game filled with information on various magic crests and spell recipes. This "Magic Master" book is something that the main character in the game has, and the player will need to refer to from time to time while playing the game.
~ There will be a console version of the game, but the hardware is not decided yet (come on Level 5, the answer is pretty obvious...)
~ They want the console version to offer something different for people that have already played the DS version, the selection of the hardware will be based on which is most suitable for this purpose (AGAIN, the answer is OBVIOUS...)
~ The exact same book will be packaged with the console version as well

Arc Rise Fantasia (Wii)

~ A party consist of 3 characters, and the longer the same characters stay in the party and battle, the stronger their bonds grow.  As this intimacy bond increases, there will be visible effects.
~ A single character can pull off a combination of attacks with "single connect", while multiple characters can pull off a combination attack on an enemy with "party connect".
~ If all 3 party members use a special "Excel act" attack on the same enemy, it turns into a super attack called a "trinity act" that does huge damage.

Ninokuni sounds and looks absolutely brilliant...The book pack-in makes me think that the localization will be butchered, if it even is at all, though... =(

Seventh (7th, whatever) Dragon looks pretty cute, too, for what is essentially a Dragon Quest clone, and I like the custom creation...

I'm WAITING for Kizuna and Arc Rise Fantasia scans, but whoever has the scanner refuses to do it for some reason... >=|

Sounds horrible. Like players need any less incentive to ever change their characters instead of just picking a winning combination and staying with that. If it also prevents non-combatant characters from getting EXP you can be pretty damn sure no player will ever switch characters once he has decided which ones to use.

That information is far too vague to make baseless assumptions off of...

Frankly, I think RPGs have gone on far too long with not making party relationships an important part of the game...It should standard as far as I'm concerned...
Title: Re: Official Weekly Famitsu Thread - Seventh Dragon (DS), Ninokuni (Level 5, DS)
Post by: KDR_11k on September 26, 2008, 04:07:32 PM
Maybe. But tying it to the part of your party you use in combat is silly, that's usually determined by the game's balancing as some characters are simply better than others and when you have to choose a limited number you naturally pick the best ones. Why do RPGs insist on limiting the party size that much? If you want dynamic relationships you need good interaction dynamics too, not just "use this one in combat" or "keep talking to that character even though he just repeats one line".

Has Studio Ghibli ever been involved with a game before?

and holy crap, Level-5 should focus on finshing DQ9 before they start eighteen more projects.

They worked on some obscure monster-creating/fighting game called Rakugaki Oukoku (Graffiti Kingdom) for PS2...Not sure of anything else...

If you want dynamic relationships you need good interaction dynamics too, not just "use this one in combat" or "keep talking to that character even though he just repeats one line".

You never know, that could be included too... =)

Supposedly ZUN was working on Graffiti Kingdom toom at least Touhou Wiki lists that game as having a cameo of Reimu...

and holy crap, Level-5 should focus on finshing DQ9 before they start eighteen more projects.

If they start a new project they obviously have a team for it, most devs have enough teams to handle multiple games at the same time and it'd just be a waste of effort to throw the whole company at one game.

Those Mario & Luigi 3 scans look great!  I love the huge ball of Goombas that Bowser is holding in the first scan.

Capcom is porting Monster Hunter G to Wii.  Monster Hunter G is an enhanced version of Monster Hunter 1 and is apparently one of the hardest games in the Monster Hunter Series.

So here is the official release timeline of the monster hunter series:  Source (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=14124064&postcount=43)

Well if Monster Hunter 3 is only 40% done now, I'd imagine it wont be out until early 2010.  With this Monster Hunter G port coming in spring, I wouldn't be surprised if Capcom ports Monster Hunter 2 G for the fall on the Wii as well.

This is Capcom we're talking about, they live to port.  And with them now releasing a version of the first game in the series, before the 3rd game is even done, it's only a matter of time before some version of Monster Hunter 2 hits the Wii as well.

They are most likely doing this intentionally to transplant the PS2/PSP monster hunter audience to Wii.

That and easy sales each monster hunter sold practically a million each in Japan.

No, I don't think the console versions were EVER too hot. When they got ported to the PSP they were million sellers but the PS2 games were lucky to move 500k I believe.

So even though the Wii getting the next console version is still a coup, smart observers are NOT expecting a million seller.

We'll see, the PSP version has made tons of penetration so that will most likely spill over to the Wii. I'll say it right now, the game will sell over a million in Japan, easily. You have to realize (at least from what I understand) that the game just recently caught on, so it may have just been a matter of building a userbase with the PS2 versions that jumpstarted the craze on the PSP. In fact by looking at the numbers the game started out slow, around 300k for PS2, then the next iteration sold around 700k for PS2 and then the next PSP game sold like 1.4 million then that was almost doubled with the next game. So it looks like it is slowly, but surely trending up and may not have anything to do with what platform it is on, but the growing popularity for the franchise.

I'm not sure about NA with sales though, but I do know that I want it to come out here! MH3 looks amazing with some great production values.

In a surprising, if Capcom-esque move, the company has announced a port of Monster Hunter G for Wii via the pages of Famitsu. First released in January 2005 for the PlayStation 2, MHG was an incremental upgrade to the original Monster Hunter from 2004 (seen above), adding G-Level Quests and a new weapon class. The Wii edition, to be released in Spring, will be an almost direct port: Control will use the Classic Controller exclusively, although minor upgrades such as a 16:9 widescreen mode and the ability to send items purchased from shops directly to your home will be added. Fees for online play, if any, have not yet been announced.
