Super Mario Maker Coming To 3DS
« on: September 01, 2016, 03:08:00 AM »

Focusing on local play for the game.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/43320/super-mario-maker-coming-to-3ds

Super Mario Maker is coming to the Nintendo 3DS on December 2.

The 3DS version will focus on local play, with course trading available by local wireless or StreetPass and sharing of incomplete levels for creation.

Unlike the Wii U game, Mystery Mushrooms and online sharing will not be available, though select Wii U courses will be downloadable.

Is there any word on whether it'll use 3D or not?

Hope I get in before the lamentations/frustrations on not being able to share levels online.

That... is a major reduction even when considering portable versions of console games have been lesser versions in the pass. I wonder what the issue is. Is it a Nintendo Network issue or an arbitrary executive decision. The video of it went by so fast, but I got the impression you can download levels and access Course World of the Wii U version.

We played Mario Maker on Wii U a TON, however, I can't see myself buying it for 3DS where I already own it

Not to be the one that starts the hate train.....

But I think in a prior thread, I pined for something literally the opposite of this - unconcerned with being able to make levels in the game, maybe an inexpensive ($10?) download-only title that would simply allow you to download and play levels the Wii U (and in future NX?) creators made.

That said, I suppose this will work well for those who have several friends with 3DS and would be interested in simply sharing and playing each other's levels.

Removing the ability to share levels online, in my judgment, severely defeats the purpose of this game. I guess I'll just be sticking with the Wii U version.

Axing the online sharing is a major neutering of the game.  Although I haven't played it for a while now, during the initial few months of owning it I was routinely playing the 100 Marios mode where it grabs random user levels.  Without that I can't really imagine what the game would be like.  I find I don't really have the patience to make that many levels of my own (and Nintendo banning one of my levels with no reason given didn't help my motivation) and playing others was really what gave the game value.  I guess if you don't own a Wii U this is a way to get part of the experience but it isn't going to be the same.

Yep, a bizarre choice for a game that is essentially online only.  It's like a Carrot Top act without props.

I'm still curious whether or not it'll be using the top screen's 3D effects-- if so, it'll have at least one edge over the Wii U release. Plus, it'll finally fill the void of not having 3D Classics releases of any of the NES SMB games. Sadly, the lack of any newly added background graphics for the NES skins (which would help prevent "ghosting") seems to suggest it that it won't.

in the Direct they said you can play the 100 Mario challenge and play recommended courses from Course World. It pulls levels shared from Wii U users. You just can't upload levels from the 3DS. That's the only stripped out feature. That and Mystery Mushroom courses with the funky costumes. That won't be in the 3DS version either. But it's otherwise identical as far as I can tell.

This probably has to do with the fact that many people were designing levels that have too many elements for the 3DS game to run properly.  The original could make crazy levels with enemy numbers and level design that would probably break the 3DS build.  So I am sure that select Wii U levels that properly run on the 3DS version can be played.

I don't see a reason to pick this one unless the Nintendo-made levels are worthwhile.

Yes this is a weird choice for 3DS
No I won't be buying it
But you gotta remember; 8 trillions 3DSs are out there compared to the 2 dozen WiiUs.

So, it's the Wii U version without the ability to upload levels, without the ability to pull specific levels, and without the Mystery Mushrooms (weird decision there...).

In exchange, you can co-create levels and trade levels via StreetPass.

No exclusive Mario Land/Mario Land 2 elements. :(

I'm glad there isn't anything exclusive to this version.  Otherwise nobody has a definitive version of the game with this having exclusive content but lacking other features.  Right now if you want Super Mario Maker done right you get the Wii U game and you're set.  No need to buy two versions that are both missing something.

There's no reason the Wii U version couldn't be updated with the new assets.

I wonder if the file size of the stages are small enough to share via street pass. I could see people taking their 3DS on the go more with hopes of street passing and getting new stages
