missed you guys too. In reality I was driven away by my super mean and controlling boyfriend, SB, which was enforced by Pap, but I just couldn't stay away any longer, I don't care if I get beaten later, you guys are just TOO IMPORTANT! <3

You were too busy to post because you spent the week in Vegas previewing upcoming games and having a goddamn blast at the manager's conference while I spent the week bored out of my skull in an empty house, listening to the voices in my head get louder and louder.  :P

What they need is a WiiSports. Something simplistic at first, but the more you play, the more depth you discover. Easy to pick up, hard to master. I know they haven't shown much software yet, but from what has been shown, and stories that have been told, it doesn't really seem like they have come up with that "casual friendly, hardcore approved" game yet. & at $200(rumored) it had better be some damn good game since the jump in price is gonna be $400 starting.

And they haven't answered the BIG question: who is going to buy this thing?

It's not hardcore gamers because they look upon it with disgust (and rightly so).

It's not going to be mothers for their kids: A $200 peripheral on top of a $300 system? I think not.

It's not going to be non-gamers: they're not going to go spend $500 on a concept that the Eyetoy largely already covered.

So who exactly is going to buy this thing?

So why does The Conduit get such a pass from many (not all) Wii loyalists?  Sure, its not a grey/brown shooter, and its not HD, but the style of the characters and environments look like the same shooters we played around the turn of the century?  Why the double standard?  Hmmm....

I'm just STARTING to play the game right now and the visuals aren't terribly good, but I've heard the Conduit bashed nearly everywhere else.

And personally, I can enjoy a generic shooter once in a while, but only ONCE in a while.

I think this thread shows what's wrong with the current generation of gaming: too much criticizing of systems people don't own and of games people never played, and not enough actual playing of the games people do own and celebrating what they like. I guess it stems from people not being able to afford all three systems so they have to fool themselves into believing a system they don't own is worthless and has bad games.

I own all three consoles. I've played games from all of them and found myself liking/being disappointed with games from all three. What I've pointed out here is a problem on the PS360. I'd love to see more Uncharteds, LBPs and Assassin's Creeds. God willing, we'll see more of these instead of just more stale shooters with gimmicks.

I think this topic has merit in the sense that instead of creating something new with HD graphics they tend to stick with the tried and true.

You could make the same argument about Nintendo and their franchises.  Instead of creating new IP they stick with the tried and true - Mario, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., Metroid Prime re-release, New Play Control re-releases, etc.  Of course, the counter-argument to that is the new stuff they've done like Wii Sports/Resort, Punch-Out!!, Wii Fit, Wii Music, and a bunch of awesome (and original) DS games.

My point is that this all feeds into a stereotype that reinforces what you don't like about the other consoles.  So what if you don't like first-person shooters?  Just ignore them.  They aren't made for you anyways, just like Nintendo games on the whole aren't made for some people either.  This entire thread is fanboy troll-baiting, and it gets so old.  You could go to a PS3 or 360 forum and see a thread just like this turned around on the Wii, with the same hyperbolic arguments and blanket statements.

Stuff like this just drags down the atmosphere of these forums...that's why I don't like it.

In all honesty, I posted this with the goal of simply saying "Haha! Look, it's funny!", but I think I'll turn this discussion serious now since a very good point has just been presented here...

Yes, you're right: there are threads on other forums dedicated to the PS360 mocking the Wii, but the same threads exist on general gaming forums as well.

The Wii is regarded as crap on most any general gaming forum. Why is that? Is it because it HONESTLY had zero games worth playing? Of course not: I spend my free time playing Brawl and whatever I rent from GameFly, which recently included Overlord (which was great but short), LKS, Punchout and now I'm starting on the Conduit. This very minute, I'm reliving the days of my youth with Sonic the Hedgehog on the virtual console. The Wii is a FANTASTIC platform for games.

So why does it get trashed in any non-Nintendo forum and even some Nintendo specific forums?

Let's think back to the GC for a minute. I don't care what anyone says, the GC was a goddamn good system. SSBM, Pikmin 1&2, Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, FF:CC, Four Swords, Eternal Darkness, MGS:TS, Geist (the aiming was the ONLY downside of this game), Super Monkey Ball, F-ZeroGX, Metroid Prime 1&2, Animal Crossing, etc., etc. Yet, it routinely got **** all over, especially by the people who were supposed to be the GC-specific editors! (I'm looking at YOU, IGN).

I've looked over the library of the original Xbox: 90% of it was utter crap. All this militant Xbox fanboyism that went on back then was nothing more than smoke and mirrors and male posturing. These guys sure as hell weren't going on about the wonderful games the system had, but the system itself.

But here's the fucking ridiculous part: it WORKED! All of the FUD that Microsoft succeeded in spreading, combined with the lack of support for the GC by its own alleged proponents meant that any kid looking to pick up a console of that generation was unlikely to pick up a GC for fear of ridicule. It was an excellent system with many, MANY AAA games, and yet none of that mattered because, when push came to shove, no one would stand up for the GC.

Let's look at the GC's closest approximation this gen, the PS3. The PS3 is in dead last, launched with terribad numbers, has suffered a huge drought of quality exclusives and has been plagued by price point problems from day one. For all the flak they take, the Sony Defense Force doesn't...give...up. I don't see IGN PS3 editors talking about playing Halo 3 instead of reviewing Killzone 2, because despite the fact that the PS3 is in a far, FAR more laughable state than the GC ever was (Giant enemy crab, 599 US dollars, you'll get a 2nd job to buy one, etc.), they haven't quit on it.

I'm not saying that militant fanboyism is a good thing, but the problem lies in the fact that no doubt many potential Wii owners have been pushed away from owning a Wii. They check online, largely uneducated, to see what people are saying about it, and when they see PS360 sites lambasting the Wii and ALSO see Wii sites lambasting the Wii, odds are they're not going to pick one up.

I think Nintendo saw this happening and the blue ocean was also intended to shift the customer base OUT of the group that succumbs to peer pressure and FUD.

The point is, the HD consoles can handle themselves (I have a 360 and PS3 as well, FYI). They're attached to gigantic, multinational corporations who will disappear from the market the minute that the "owning the living room" dream is made irrelevant by some unforeseen sweeping change and they'll be off to greener pastures.

But Nintendo is in this until the bitter end: I believe them when they say they'll go out of business before selling out. Right now, the FUD has basically succeeded in convincing the internet that the Wii has no good games to play, despite the MANY examples to the contrary that abound. If we, the alleged Nintendo fans, don't stick up for the console, then our silence equates damnation for the Wii. To the many thousands of lurkers this forum sees daily, I'm sure most come away with the idea that even a community built around Nintendo has few good things to say about the Wii.

I believe the Wii is the best of the three consoles, by leaps and bounds. I believe that motion control is just waiting for an enterprising developer to unveil its true potential. In my support of the Wii, I don't see anything wrong with poking fun at some of the very WORST trends in gaming, such as the endless rehashing of the same goddamn FPS over and over and over again. I'm actually a FPS connoisseur, which is why I see TF2 as proof that god loves humanity, hence why I balk at the endless parade of stale, uninspired shooters (Conduit included).

In summary, poking fun at the "enemy" is not only warranted but is necessary to maintain a sense that, yes, there IS a fanbase behind the Wii. Besides, this is pretty harmless compared to what you might see on other forums. It's not like this thread is titled "PS360 ARE GIANT PIECES OF ****!!!", but I'm sure you can find a thread suggesting the very same about the Wii on many other forums.

There's a reason Uncharted and LBP aren't in the list.

They actually feature boatloads of colors.

33
Has anyone suggested adding a camera to the remote? LASER POINTER? OR A HAND BUZZER? SOLAR PANELS?

Nintendo needs to hire this man.

I'd like to see a "WiiWare" Wii bundle that comes with 5000 Wii points and a disc that contains an instructional video that walks people through how to access WiiWare.

I changed the title to "HD shooters fail" because you won't be seeing LBP or Uncharted in that list.

I did my level best at this quiz and got around 45%. Seriously, the point that many shooters look identical is a valid one.

If the thread is that bad, move it to the funhouse.

Sega also jumped in early on the N-Gage.

But wow, this is irritating. So all these developers have given up on the Wii but are convinced that shittier versions of motion control on HD consoles are where it's at? There just aren't any words for this...

It doesn't take more than a bit of poking around to understand why a lot of people have fallen away from the Wii: people don't like to move around a lot while gaming. It was fun for a while, but making people flail around was a novelty and it has already overstayed its welcome.

So if the details I'm hearing are correct....

Mistake #1: Launching Natal as an add-on peripheral instead of rebranding a new Xbox line with it.

Are they insane? Nintendo pondered launching the remote as a GC add-on peripheral, but wisely decided that this would require an entire rebranding to get the effect they were looking for, hence the Wii. If it doesn't ship with the system, no 3rd party in their right mind is going to seriously develop for it (without moneyhats, I suppose).

Mistake #2: $200 pricetag!

Answer to a rhetorical question: yes, they clearly ARE insane. Not only will Natal be a separate peripheral that must be purchased independent of a $300 console, but it'll cost another $200 as well.

After the moneyhats stop, no developer is going to want to work with this thing due to the extreme amount of risk involved. A separate peripheral that is DESTINED to wind up being relegated to the status of "gimmick" that costs $200 and doesn't have the necessary rebranding to get it into homes as a family-friendly device.

I mean, wow, just...WOW...

Maelstrom was completely correct in his discussion of the "Birdman Fallacy". Here, MS is watching Nintendo do extremely well and can only come away with the conclusion that it must be due to the fact that people love jumping around like idiots while playing games. Ergo, if they release a controller that lets people jump around like idiots, they'll be successful, too.

They have absolutely no grasp of the fact that it was the complete rebranding of the Wii as something that the non-gaming populace would want to own that made it so successful. Nor do they grasp the fact that, after the novelty wears off, motion control isn't a selling point for games.

I really doubt that, used sales aren't that massive (especially since they're limited by the number of unwanted copies out there) and would at most take up a part of the new sales. That part shouldn't be make or break when it comes to survival. The big publishers whine about it because they can't get growth done by not increasing their number of customers and instead try to get more and more money out of their existing userbase (70€ games, DLC, DRM, trying to prevent used sales, ...). They need to grow, all businesses do but they refuse to grow the number of people their game appeals to or just take that growth for granted (population growth) so they need to increase the revenue without needing to appeal to more people.

I'm sure there are many games that just barely got picked up by a publisher and given a chance, yet returned disappointing sales numbers due to used sales eating into its profits.

But I can only speculate on those scenarios. What I know for a FACT is that Gamestop has not gone unnoticed by publishers, hence why Sony is bringing out a PSP that only supports downloadable games. Whether they'll meet with any degree of success in this venture is anyone's guess.

Just imagine how Daryl Allison himself would feel if his game sold poorly.

Appreciation is something that doesn't come easily, and for many, not at all. I've seen far too many solid games go completely unnoticed because they just didn't catch on for some unknown reason.

It could always be worse.

I think Jaffe is just saying what most publishers are thinking.

Small devs need every sale they can get, and I'm sure Gamestop has basically killed some of these small devs because they've sucked the profits out of new games.

1.  this thread doesn't refer back to the original article in the opening post.  that's a no-no.

2.  the actual article has no direct references to other resouces/game pages already set aside on the main site.  i believe the information should be readily available and noticeable together.  I think more attention should be given to the general game info pages since they serve as info gateways.

3.  on the issue of "I don't know what Furry Legends is," the subtitles for the headlines should always be descriptive to a certain minimum degree, to help the reader identify what the product is at a glance.  this descriptor is especially important since most of the front-page stories have NO graphics/game art attached to them.

From SpyBorg's NWR info page:

"We chatted with Capcom Senior Producer Daryl Allison about the past, present, and future of Spyborgs"
- kinda weak, we have an idea who's working on Spyborgs, but not the kind of game it is

"An old school brawler with a new coat of paint..."
- better, it's implied this is a pow-pow-smash action game

"This brawler impresses visually and is designed for co-op play..."
- a co-op brawler, this sets off the right signals in the reader

"Spyborgs returns with a new look and brand new gameplay details..."
- doesn't help

^ These are mostly things I look for that would help me better connect with the content of a site update.

This sounds like some pretty solid advice to me. An eye-catching sentence is a must for any article. You have only that sentence to make the reader go "Ooo! I should check this out..."

Also, I totally agree with more links to websites, media, etc. Anything and everything you can do to make it easy for the reader to see more about the game is always good.

I was on edge of becoming a lapsed gamer until Wii came along to be honest. By the end of the GC era life got in the way of gaming and the few times I went back, it felt like the magic wasn't there anymore. It wasnt like being a kid and rushing home after school on friday night knowing you were gonna sit in front of the NES and beat the **** outta SMB3.. ya know?

All of a sudden the promise of Wii had me excited once more, the magic was back. Sure some of that promise hasn't been delivered, YET, but i'm still hopeful. Even the DS got me excited, though as i mentioned I've never been much of a portable gamer. The games i do have for that system I love, and just hearing about unique games on the platform make me happy as a gamer, because imagination is still alive and well in developers.

Basically, the Wii is helping fight the war against stagnant gaming and despite its flaws i'm thankfull for it as non-elitist gamer. Yes, I said THANKFULL. Before 2006 people started acting like a video game wasn't worth **** if it wasn't a GTA clone, that was the first wave of attack. Then FPS games littered with bald space marines came in for the second wave, followed by the onslaught of hi-res graphics... I felt like I was watching gaming die.. my favorite hobby, and also a passion, was whithering away like a wilted flower.. almost lifeless... slowly turning brown.

and as Pro would say, the tides of the blue ocean washed away the old crops, making the land fertile again for the seeds of change to be sewn.

That basically describes me as well: I was prepared to never own another console since I had grown so bored with gaming.

47
But why would you need a completely different product when this is already like a build your own cadbury egg. You even get to add your own filling.

Because the product I posted clearly denotes a group activity.
