General Gaming / Aion...
« on: September 30, 2009, 02:48:47 PM »
So my GF offered to buy me a new laptop if she could have my old one and if I played Aion with her. We've never played an MMO together and god knows I could use a new laptop so I took the deal.

The best way I could describe the game is that it's like a version of WoW where the game actually makes an effort to keep up appearances. The game is thoroughly beautiful, has a much better art direction and overall a better ambiance than WoW ever did. They further add to the experience by giving you cutscenes involving your character from time to time.

But the real kicker is that, after level 10, you can fly in certain areas and it opens up exploration and combat on another axis of travel.

I'm only level 12 so far, but I can say that if you've done WoW, you probably wouldn't get THAT much new out of it. I kinda wish I had played Aion and NEVER played WoW, since Aion is basically an improvement on all fronts.

General Chat / Anyone heard of Nespresso?
« on: April 10, 2009, 04:24:40 PM »
http://www.nespresso.com/ Ignore the cheesy porno music (or enjoy it, heh).

I bought one of these little buggers recently and I can vouch for how awesome these things are.

It's basically 2 minutes after you flip the machine on for it to heat and after that, drop a capsule in and it's 20 seconds to a punch-in-the-balls potent shot of espresso.

Being a caffeine connoisseur, I had gone to french presses for my coffee needs (which are infinitely better than regular drip coffee makers, FYI), but after my GF and I stumbled upon one of their stores while wandering the streets of Boston, we wound up buying one online that night since she goes to Starbucks every morning anyway and spends $3-4 just to make it through the day so it pays for itself pretty quickly.

The caps are 55¢ each, which is $5.50 for a sleeve of 10 and they have blends that are designed to be brewed as espresso or what's called a "lungo" (loon-go") which is basically a more normal-sized cup of coffee. The best part is how convenient the damn thing is. Just open the lever, drop a cap in, hit the button and it's done. No fucking around with a coffee grinder and a french press to get the best cup of coffee (which is how I used to do it) and no cleaning out grinds afterwards.

If anyone here is a coffee junkie like I am and has a day job that requires they stop for a caffeine fix, I'd highly recommend looking into one. They have a few stores scattered around the country where you could go to try the stuff (Williams-Sonomas also carry the machines and will let you sample them).

Normally I don't plug products but I never knew this one even existed until I stumbled across their store and it's basically changed the way I take my caffeine forever.

This one slipped me by and I'm playing it years later with my GF.

It's a pretty decent game, and the DnD 3.5 ruleset makes it somewhat familiar to me.

Did anyone else ever play this back in the day?

Some good games all around.

I think the highlight for me was getting the smash ball with Ike and holding onto it until I was able to grab both of you guys in it. Shame I couldn't save the replay, though.

And I've learned thatguy has the same smash "biorhythms" that I do, except with the Ice Climbers instead of Bowser: some days I'll be on fire with him and others I'm just awful (your Ness is pretty damn good regardless).

I was on for 2 hours last night and it was a vacant wasteland of emptiness. Thank god I had one guy to play against for 45 minutes or so or I'd have been forced to spend the whole time Uncle Bobbing it.

Is the lag driving us off? Is Nintendo's evil plan working? :(

1. No, I have no clue how to play as Lucario.

It wasn't me going "I'M GONNA GIT THAT DAISY!!!"

Nintendo Gaming / They were wrong... [Online lag isn't improving]
« on: March 26, 2008, 07:09:21 PM »
The lag isn't getting better. It's getting worse.

So this...

“As with the launch of any online-enabled game, especially one as popular as Super Smash Bros. Brawl, everyone wants to play at once. This puts a strain on the pipeline. We have seen improvements in online play performance every day since launch.” - Nintendo spokesperson

...is completely inaccurate. I think what Nintendo forgets is the fact that people are still buying the game and they're just as eager to get online as many players who STILL want to play online.

Nintendo Gaming / Lag, demystified?!?
« on: March 19, 2008, 08:53:06 PM »
I have a FLAWLESS connection to a guy in Maryland and yet I lag when connecting to players an hour drive from me (in NH).

I found out today that the player in MD and I BOTH HAVE VERIZON DSL!

Since our connections never leave the Verizon fiber channel, we have great connectivity. My advice: look for others on the same provider as you and see if you have the same results.

Nintendo Gaming / I PWN JOO ALL...

...with my lag, apparently. :(

I know most folks here are out in the western/southern parts of the US, but is it even possible to play a match with me? I think I've just gotten used to the lag at this point and have learned to input commands far enough in advance that they'll happen when I need them to happen.

I've made absolute certain that my outgoing traffic is COMPLETELY unblocked, and I was able to play Strikers online just fine back when I had it.

It's playable for me when I'm playing 1v1s, but as soon as a 3rd person joins it immediately becomes a slideshow. Is this basically the story for everyone or is my connection the catalyst here?

Nintendo Gaming / The Lag Alleviation Thread
« on: March 14, 2008, 02:58:21 PM »
Here are all the possibilities to eliminate/reduce lag in online matches:

1. USB Adaptor for a Wired Connection

It's $25 and it eliminates all concern about whether or not your wifi is on the right channel, has enough strength, has too much inteference, etc. $25 and it comes with a cable. You also won't have to type in a goddamn 26-digit WEP key with the software keyboard (yay!)

2. Open UDP ports going out or DMZ your Wii's IP address.

Most routers have a DMZ option, aka "demilitarized zone", meaning that whichever IP address has the DMZ on it will have full incoming and outgoing access to all ports.

1. Log into your router (usually http://192.168.1.1/). If you don't know your router's IP, use the "Run..." command in Windows and put in "ipconfig" and hit enter. One of the values it returns should be "Gateway" and you'll have an IP address for the Gateway: that's your "gateway" to the internet, aka your router's IP address. Put it into a browser window as the URL and hit enter.

2. Find the router's DHCP connection list. On this list, you will find your Wii (if it's on and WC24 is running, that is).

3. Copy your Wii's IP address and go to the router's DMZ section (DMZ = demilitarized zone, meaning all ports open).

4. Put the Wii's IP address into the DMZ, save the settings and reboot the router.

5. Try Brawl and see how it works.

NOTE: Your Wii's IP address can and will change if it's connecting through DHCP. This will behave as a temporary test to see if your Wii sees improvement or not.

You're basically opening your firewall to your Wii, which SHOULD mean that Gamespy's servers no longer need to proxy the stream so the two Wiis can remain connected, which is how it currently must behave if one or both Wiis is behind a firewall which normally blocks incoming connections from programs like Brawl.

To check to see if your ports are open, use this: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/NetworkTest.jsp

It's Nintendo's own network tester (you'll need XP and IE to use it, though).

This thread might also help: http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=928518&topic=41913059

3. Don't download crap while playing Brawl and don't let others download crap, either

This is universal for any online gaming. My Team Fortress ping has gone insane whenever someone starts a bittorrent.

4. Make sure those you play with have their Wii DMZed as well!

It doesn't matter how open your firewall is if your online friends have theirs closed. This means that you're still going to be forced to proxy through Gamespy's servers on some level. Ideally, you want to establish a direct connection to your opponent, and this can only happen if Gamespy isn't needed as an intermediary to get through a firewall for either of the users.

More ideas as we learn them...

I didn't let anyone into my game because I was dueling in prep for the tournament on saturday. I'm trying to work my Ike and Olimar skills up to a usable level because they weren't previously.

Nintendo Gaming / SSBB Wifi Friend Finder

I found this recently:

http://smashboards.com/ff/

Yes, it's Smashboards (which many seem to have a stigma against), but it's pretty good about tracking the location of players and letting you swap codes as a result.

At the bottom is a place where you can set your status and add a message next to your name and location. You need an account on Smashboards, but it's worth it, especially to find people near enough that they won't lag like hell when you connect to them.

Yes, this would be better if we could somehow do this via Wii but we'll have to make due with AIM.

Nintendo Gaming / Anyone else experiencing terrible online lag?
« on: March 10, 2008, 06:48:18 PM »
The matches against Dirk last night had some lag to them but were tolerable, but I tried to jump into a match with Svevan (in Oregon) and I had at least a .75-1 second delay on every action.

Is ANYONE else having problems like these with friend battles?

I need to know if this is a universal issue I can expect Nintendo to fix or if I need to tear my ISP a new one.
