Nintendo Gaming / Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX
« on: August 19, 2015, 06:09:14 PM »
Tried the demo. Europe only gets 1 use, are they joking? Well after starting up the demo I found there's a song called LOL...

Anyway, I played it all in tap mode because when trying button mode the resistance on the 3DS buttons meant I would often screw up the timing.

I think the first song Senbonzakura is setup pretty well where even in hard mode it feels enjoyable. I managed to get a perfect on this too.

LOL on the other hand doesn't feel like it had the same care and attention going in to it. The lines start to go in strange directions where there are notes placed right on the corners making the timing harder to gauge and really confusing when the lines start to go in tight squares. The song also feels lacking in a noticeable beat to help keep your rhythm.

The touchscreen button placement doesn't feel well optimised on hard mode, with 3 buttons sectioned in to triangles.

You can place your stylus near the upper middle part of the screen but you risk hitting the wrong note if your hand strays. I wish there was a way to edit the placement of these because with me being a lefty I feel more comfortable with just using the left portion of the touch screen.

I've been awaiting a rhythm game as good as Elite Beat Agents / Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan for a long time now, sadly I don't think this is the one.

Thanks to the region locking I can't play the Taiko no Tatsujin games either.

Nintendo Gaming / Bungie's Destiny
« on: February 23, 2013, 02:47:06 PM »
This may seem a little far fetched but when I was watching Bungie's Destiny at the Sony unveiling I noticed something at 1:05 in the video.

My body is ready!

If this is some kind of hint of a Wii U version I would be very happy. Still, kind of a dick move to make this hint at a Sony event.

The premise of the game is you are the one controlling this system that sorts luggage that is to be loaded on to planes before departure.

I like puzzle games, I really do. I do not like puzzle games enough to like this. On the 4th challenge it gives you the game just becomes a mind numbing multi-tasking nightmare and does not feel enjoyable at all. Upon completing a challenge there is little satisfaction to be gained due to the game's lack of presentation.

I regret my purchase.

Nintendo Gaming / Pokémon X/Y

Not played one since Ruby/Sapphire. I'll be glad to get in to Pokemon again. I heard in the more recent games that each Pokemon had a more specialised roles to play in each battle making it more strategic than merely seeing who had the upper hand in types and move types.

This. Game. Is. Hard.

Ok so I've managed to get all 232 stars in Grand Tour mode and I've beaten all the Grand Prix's in expert including mirror mode. I'm working my way to getting the triple star license and I tell ya... those expert ghosts on time trials are killing me!

I must have spent 45 minutes on that Shinobi level because the ghost drove so perfectly it was hard to make any headway. After I beat it I checked the leaderboard and its like only 30-40 other people managed to beat it too. The Panzer Dragoon track was crazy too because 80% of it is in the air and you have to chain all these risk-boosts together to get ahead of the ghost.

Can you imagine a kid getting this as a gift because their parents looked at the box and thought it would be a fun cheerful game then for the lifetime of the game the kid can't unlock half the characters.

I'm having fun in the online mode. Except for the quitters, this one guy was consistently beating me in 4 races and before I manage to win the 5th one he quits on me; honestly though I felt a little satisfied for making him quit.

General Gaming / Ever think Samsung will replace Sony?
« on: November 19, 2012, 05:06:26 AM »
In the video game industry Nintendo is the only platform holder left that specialises only in video games. Microsoft who are at the forefront of software and Sony who was at the forefront of consumer electronics. No doubt the edge in their respective fields allowed them to move in on the games industry.

Sony however are not looking so hot right now if you've been following the news. These excerpts are taken from http://www.japansubculture.com/the-ghosts-of-sony/

Panasonic Corp. lost 698 billion yen (8.7 billion $ US) for the second quarter of the fiscal year, and its longtime rival Sony also  announced an annual loss of 457 billion yen (5.7 billion $ US) in its fourth straight year of red ink, Sony reported its fiscal results on November 1.

Former Sony executives and current employees blame the fall of the firm on the loss of brainpower and good employees during the reign of Nobuyuki Idei, from 1999 to 2005. Idei was the first Sony CEO to rise up entirely from a management background and in the “Who-killed Sony?” genre of books and articles; he is regularly the prime suspect.

“Idei decided to streamline the company and do massive restructuring. When we say, ‘restructure’ in Japanese—we really mean get rid of people. He put together an early retirement plan and strongly encouraged people to use it. Well, that didn’t generate a lot of good feelings. When a company starts promoting early retirement, most people take that as a sign to get out while they still can. And many did. Maybe the idea was that by getting rid of the middle aged and older employees they’d encourage innovation and bring in some young blood. The effect was more like shooting yourself in the foot.”

According to the Sony veteran, the middle-aged engineers and technicians that left were the same ones that brought Sony to greatness. They left behind a younger generation that was insecure, afraid of failure, and only willing to work with technology already in place—not build from the ground up.

“What was even worse is that during this period, Korea and Taiwan immediately welcome the exiting Sony techies with open arms. It was better than industrial espionage—Samsung could openly ‘buy’ the technology that Sony had developed simply by rehiring their best and brightest.”

The representative of a major European investor in Sony recalls his meeting with Idei very unfavorably.

“I came to Japan to talk to Mr. Idei about our growing concerns with Sony’s direction. We had dinner together. I wanted to talk about profit margins; he wanted to talk about the wine we were having. He struck me as a clueless.”

When the investor pointed out that Sony’s operating profits on electronic products were roughly 2-4% and that Samsung was making similar products at a 30% profit margin, Idei hushed him by saying, “They make the parts for our products. We put them together. It’s the difference between a steel maker and an automobile maker. We make the automobiles.”

The investor countered, “Well, I’ve got news for you—the people you laid off from the car plant are now working at the steel mill, and soon the steel mills will be building cars with your technology.”

So Samsung being the new electronics giant built on the backs of former Sony talent may just push out Sony as a platform holder. Not this coming generation but maybe the next one if Sony can't get things in order. With March 2013 on the way, the date they are due to layoff 10,000 employees I can only see things getting much worse before they get better.

Shady dealings!! It seems Nintendo don't own the Eternal Darkness IP after all. Seeing how Silicon Knights is in ruins now it would be a good chance for Nintendo to buy out the IP.

Nintendo Gaming / Kid Icarus Uprising
« on: October 10, 2012, 04:06:44 PM »
You know, Kid Icarus being such a huge game couple have a couple of different threads just for itself like weapon fusions, boss strategies and completion guides.

I am having some trouble on Chapter 17: The Aurum Brain at 9.0 intensity. I get to the point where Palutena's big buff centurions are pulling the platform but I can't seem to stop all 4 of them from dying.

Is it just a matter of killing everything super quick? because if I go down that route then I take way too much damage (I have +4 Overall Defense)

General Gaming / Is there a wrong way to play Animal Crossing?
« on: October 05, 2012, 02:41:24 PM »
Is there a wrong way to play Animal Crossing?

In a game where there are no objectives there are no ways to lose. You would think there isn't a wrong way to play it and however you want to play it will always be right. That's not true in my experience. I definitely played this game wrong. I didn't have any fun.

Right after Tom Nook forced that ridiculous mortgage on to me I had already lost. I spent every minute of my time  trying to pay that thing off, thinking of ways to make more and more money. Trying to pimp out my house, my wardrobe. I was talking to people for the sake of improving my points in frienship. Who was I even trying to impress? The animal residents? I was trying to win at life itself.

I read in an article that Animal Crossing sets up this rat race just so you can walk away from it and I wish I had read it before I played. I was forever running towards an objective I could never achieve. You don't win at life, you just enjoy the journey and the scenery as it passes by. You could even draw parallels with real life; people who spend decades slaving away in a joyless career only to find they have wasted their precious youth.

I take some small pride in that I excel in the games I've played and I've even enjoyed some time in the worldwide leaderboards. So you can see how ironic it is that I lost in a game with no objective. So if you didn't enjoy Animal Crossing then it may have been for the same reasons I didn't enjoy it.

So the next time the game comes around on 3DS in 2013 I will give it one more go. I will stay away from the forums. I will keep in mind the game isn't about being "better" than your peers. I will just take in the scenery as it passes by.

Nintendo Gaming / Multiplatform Woes
« on: September 28, 2012, 05:25:20 PM »
Yeah there's a lot of talk about Wii U ports and many many reasons about why they aren't better or can't be better than 360 and PS3.

But here's a reason you may not have heard. It could actually be illegal to make a game too superior when compared to its other-platform counterparts. I remembered reading this a while back on Eurogamer: Why Microsoft won't publish PSN firsts (its a long read but very insightful)

Microsoft's Content Submission and Release Policy, seen by Eurogamer, details its third-party publisher guidelines.

"Titles for Xbox 360 must ship at least simultaneously with other video game platform, and must have at least feature and content parity on-disc with the other video game platform versions in all regions where the title is available," it reads.

"If these conditions are not met, Microsoft reserves the right to not allow the content to be released on Xbox 360."

One representative from a publisher who wished to remain anonymous told Eurogamer Microsoft's policy blocks developers from taking advantage of other platforms' strengths.

Now this article is about Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network games but I wouldn't be at all surprised if this extended to big name published titles too. Afterall a huge chunk of gamers only play on 360, and Microsoft could easily refuse certification if the 360 version wasn't at least equal or superior.

From the article it looks like its mainly Microsoft that are using shady business tactics to secure the 360 as the leading platform  but I wouldn't be too surprised if Sony and Nintendo also draw up similar contracts when it comes to multiplatform games. In any case when it comes to multiplatform games the end result may only be as good as the lowest performing console and by extension why the Wii U will probably have ports that are only on par.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo supports free-to-play model
« on: September 18, 2012, 12:35:12 PM »
I was a little interested about this when I heard it. I've played a few F2P games on PC, most of them being trash because I hate being nudged/pushed in to paying. I have paid money in to these games but only in ones that don't have a pay-to-win element like Tribes: Ascend and Gotham City Imposters.

Here's the quote from Satoru Iwata:
"And because of that, we have prepared a Digital Rights Management system. We have designed the system from a technical standpoint to allow developers to freely take advantage of things like free-to-play and microtransactions."

Up until recently Ghost Recon Online which is currently playable on PC was due for a Wii U release too. Ubisoft however shifted all focus to the PC version because frankly it was severely lacking in content. Only 4 maps and 2 game modes! Its a good game by the way just really slow progression, but tactical team play is king.

I find this interesting because with the Wii U pad even PC games could be accomodated for. We could see the likes of Guild Wars 2 and Team Fortress 2 on there. It would certainly be easier selecting which disguise for the spy to use on a touch screen than with a keyboard/controller.
