... At this point, I can't tell if you're serious or merely playing devil's advocate. ...

Largely the second, and doing a very poor job at that.

You're also right that I mischaracterized* what you had said earlier. Our opinions still don't line up, which is ok, but had missed most (nearly all) of your point and should apologize about that. Thanks for typing out a reasonable response that might not have been deserved.

*Could probably use strongly language here. I'm erring in my favor.  ;)

Watching the new unsolved mysteries on Netflix makes me sad. Especially the case about the black boy who was tortured and hunted by the local racists. Really pissed at the cops on that one.

Yuck. Was considering watching some episodes. Pretty sure that is the kind of "entertainment" that I just don't need in my life right now though. :(

We (as a society) have realized this with other labels that could be hurtful, and have stopped using them.
The difference is those problematic labels (such as a certain N-word with a hard-R) were created and used specifically to denigrate and devalue entire groups of people, particularly for things they can't change about themselves. "Karen" as a pejorative targets behavior which a person can absolutely change.
Quote
Why do we suddenly think it's ok to just misappropriate an actual name this way?
At least partially because it's aimed up, not down. It's mocking the oppressor rather than the oppressed.

Personally, I don't conflate actual slurs with "Karen" as a pejorative. First, you can say one out loud in public without getting looks of horror in your direction. Second, it's universally understood that "Karen" as a pejorative is shorthand for a specific type of entitled, privileged behavior, not every person named Karen whereas slurs are used as a blanket term to disparage and often unfairly assign negative traits to a group of people.

I have seen someone named Karen modify and repurpose a Mean Girls quote: "I'm not like a regular Karen; I'm a cool Karen."

First let me say I'm not sure this is really such a huge deal, and I'm also not expecting people to change because of anything I post here. I get where this came from, and how/why it's a thing. Names come and go, sometimes because of negative associations that are created for whatever reason, and perhaps it's just time for the name Karen to fade out for a while.

However, I'm not on board with your logic.

Saying that using a specific name as a pejorative is ok because there isn't a previously established social norm to discourage people from using it seems less reasonable than stopping to think about whether people are negatively affected and then adjusting your behavior and vocabulary if necessary.

Saying that a specific name is universally understood to have a negative meaning about a group of people, but that the group of people whose name is that specific word won't be affected by (mis)use of that pejorative seems very much like an "I'm not affected, so I'm not going to care" attitude.

Finally, the fact you have already seen people who feel a need to create disclaimers about their given name to qualify what kind of person they are seems pretty ridiculous, doesn't it?

Pretty sure that we can do better without much effort. (Even though I'm pretty sure that people in general won't make that effort.)

Robocop (2014) - The movie was a fine action romp, but feels like it missed the point. It never established a sense of social breakdown or unchecked corporate greed that the original movie had, and without those points the whole plot feels a bit hollow. Characters seem less interesting and never created much attachment or sympathy, pacing moves along quickly enough but by the end of the movie I don't feel like anything was accomplished.

I'm not even a fan of the original, but (and maybe this is clouded since I haven't seen that movie in a long time) this remake suffers in comparison because it just doesn't feel like it has much heart. Kind of an odd thing to say about Robocop?

Curious what others think...

What about Mary Brown's?

We have one locally; I haven't tried it. Reviews from friends have been mixed.
Are you giving it a recommendation?

31
Yeah, it's still a slow process. I also have the Gamepad on 0% battery most of the time and charge it every few months or so, when some game insists on using it. Do everything with the Pro Controller.

Pro Controller battery life remains amazing.

Regarding ramen pizza... I agree with others. I'd do pizza flavored ramen, but it doesn't work for me the other way around. Who wants their crust to be that soggy?

During my trips in China, pizza has always been a huge miss. The flavors and textures never felt "right" and trying to make it more appealing to locals almost always took away the things I liked most about pizza.

Even though pizza is my single favorite thing to eat, I would actively avoid it in favor of anything local while visiting China. My assumption is that preference would hold true for most other Asian counties.

I wish I had a Popeye's in my town. We used to have one, but it closed. Diego's is pretty good though.

I rarely do fast food anymore.
When I do, it's almost never fried chicken, as that's just too heavy and my stomach feels revolting afterwards.
However...I really miss Popeye's. There are none on my side of Canada, and unlike KFC and Dixie Lee it was always delicious without making me feeling like garbage afterwards (which, frankly, I never quite understood).

One of my top 5 fast food chains for sure.

I have some friends named Karen, and they are all good people.

It's really disappointing to have that name be used in general lexicon to mean a stupid or self-entitled person. We (as a society) have realized this with other labels that could be hurtful, and have stopped using them. Why do we suddenly think it's ok to just misappropriate an actual name this way?

So I beg you all, if someone is being a self-entitled moron then call them a self-entitled moron. Break the cycle of hurt that all innocent Karens are currently suffering from.

Thanks, that's my mini-rant of the day.

I haven't gotten around to modding anything, but always thought the GBA with a backlit IPS screen would be incredible. The size and layout of the original GBA layout feels really good, but those original screens were horrible! I know many people don't like the idea of keeping AA batteries to power the system, but using something that is rechargeable and easily swappable works for me.

At one point I had a really nice little library of games and a GBA Micro, but eventually decided to downsize my game collection and it (sadly) ended up being sold off. Will be watching enviously to see what you end up doing.

And kind of related, for people who like homebrewed retro-styled games that they can play for free online, if you haven't seen Pico-8 yet then you should check it out.

Aside from the tight cartridge fit and HDMI audio weirdness when doing game capture, is there anything else that's going on with the Evercade? Neither of those two things disturb me that much, so I was wondering if you were aware of anything else.

Those are the main niggles that I was talking about - well, those and the HDMI cable not staying fully inserted which causes the system to reset sometimes unexpectedly for some people. I've also seen reports about battery issues, but those seem uncommon enough that I'm not really concerned.

There is apparently a software bug in Top Racer (aka: Top Gear) where using nitro means you can't ever slow down afterwards. Piko is supposedly looking into it.

Totally agree that it's the oddball stuff (not the classic compilations that we've all played dozens of times on other platforms, but games that are generally hard to find official/licensed versions of) that make Evercade seem like an interesting option. If I were to get one, that would definitely be my focus.

While poking around for reviews online, I saw another rumor (with official response hinting that it's likely) about a "home console" version coming in the future that would support two players and use the same cartridges.

You can put an asterisk over anything ... History books ... a championship is a championship.

I think we're on the same page here.

In 10 years time, people will remember a couple of the really good teams this year that missed their chance - perhaps because of outside events, or perhaps not. In 25 years time, most people will only know which team won regardless of the circumstances.

For decades after that, history books will deal with events taking place that actually mattered... which doesn't include NBA championships.  All the other stuff we are going through is monumental, and basketball is just a short term diversion.

38
Unless something seriously unexpected happens between now and the end of the season, talk of asterisks is overrated.

We've seen the vast majority of the season, we know which teams are good and which aren't. Teams are going into the end of the season on (generally) equal footing and whoever plays and adjusts the best will walk away with the championship.

Champions were crowned despite key players missing from opposing teams. Champions are crowned despite abbreviated schedules. A champion will be crowned this year, and will have to overcome some tough challenges to make that happen.

Asterisks should be reserved for cases when the end result was clearly affected by cheating or bribery or intentionally doing something outside the game to affect the results in favor of the winner. At this point in time, none of those things have happened.

39
I'm a little behind that in my current play-through, but remember the enemy you were battling quite vividly. I don't recall it being "the hardest" battle, but do remember it ripping through my party a bunch of times... so maybe I just chose not to battle it until being over-leveled later?

Either way, great job and good persistence to keep looking for ways to overcome in the end.

Much of my time recently was spent gem crafting. My inventory couldn't hold any more crystals, and even though I probably should've just sold off all low level ones I invested some time remembering how to craft effectively and try to get some gems that would give my characters a bit of a boost.

How are these different platforms going?  Are they progressing along?  I haven't followed announcements, but would love to hear from people watching Amico or Atari to see how they are feeling about things.

Evercade was the only one I've been watching, and it's released now. I'm having a hard time deciding whether I want to actually buy one or not.

There are two primary things holding me back. First, the hardware has a few little niggles that are less than ideal based on reviews that have come out. These all seem fixable, but waiting for a second edition might mean just passing entirely if the system isn't successful enough. Second, I've got so many games already that it's hard to drop another $100 another portable console (before adding in $20 per game that interests me).

That said, the game library still has some appealing content. The Piko Interactive collection in particular catches my eye, as it contains a bunch of retro games that are right up my alley and not easily/legally available elsewhere at reasonable prices. There are also two Atari Lynx collections coming out, the Oliver Twins collection (with a whole bunch of Dizzy games that I've never played but was always curious about), and the Mega Cat Studios release.

I guess it's a wait-and-see for now, at least until all of the games that interest me get released. Hopefully by then some additional reviews and opinions will be available online.

General Gaming / Re: What are you playing?

So I've been bumming around playing Hexyz Force (PSP). This Atlus-published RPG was developed by Sting Entertainment, and sounded promising enough... but it's been a bit of a slog. The story and characters are (frankly) pretty bad, and the localization hasn't done it any favors in my opinion. That isn't to say the game is bad - it's not - but it's been almost entirely unremarkable. Perhaps it's a case of misplaced expectations, or the way I'm playing isn't the way it should be played, but the overall experience so far has been mediocre at best and a let down over all.

Which brings me to some happier news: I've started digging into Xenoblade Chronicles 3D (3DS) again and am just constantly reminded of how much I love this game. Playing on 3DS isn't the best way to go about it in my opinion - the small screen just doesn't convey the sense of scale and grandeur that you get from a bigger view on the Wii or Switch versions... but being able to play the game on a portable system at all is amazing.

Thanks to Khush for brining it back to mind with recent posts here: http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=28408.700

42
..., Xenoblade 1 was very cheap on Virtual Console once, ...

Are you in Europe, perhaps?  Asking because I really wanted to buy Xenoblade on Wii U VC but never once saw it go on sale in North America, which was a real bummer.  Maybe I just missed it?

43
Really love the fact that Studio Ghibli movies are on Netflix (Canada - not sure about other regions) now!
Just a bit disappointed that we're missing Grave of the Fireflies, but there are about 20 movies here already and I'm super keen to watch them with my kids... or alone.

44
"... However, it was also a case of now getting two new characters I needed to learn about... "

One fun question: which characters are you actually playing as during the game?
My first time through, I don't remember changing up my lineup at all for the first 2/3 of the game, so I learned to use a few characters really well and then spent the rest of the game experimenting with the others as supplementary/specialty characters in my party.

45
I loved this game so much on Wii, and put a ton of hours into it... but my second play through on 3DS fizzled after the first 15 hours or so. Are people playing through the game now (perhaps in different formats)?  Might be time to pick it back up.

Still think it's better on a big screen though. The exploration aspects just seem more grand that way.

Is it really going to be that ridiculously ugly?

48
We'd probably get a season that looked like the 2011-12 lockout year: 66 games, starts at Christmas.

Sounds right, although maybe they'll toy with the idea of permanent changes to the NBA season start/end dates?

49
No solution is perfect - but at this point, I'm just happy they are trying to offer any kind of playoff scenario.

I like the idea of a top 16 seeding (no conferences). Probably doesn't make a huge difference, but since travel and location doesn't matter, why not drop the conferences? It also looked like there would be some interesting matchups that would never be seen normally.

I'm ok with the idea of just taking the teams that currently qualify; there are some on the outside looking in who will be disappointed... but if a play-in situation ousts a team who would currently qualify that just means a different fan-base is the one being disappointed, so I'm not sure how much it matters in the big scheme.

Hopefully there will be a few games for teams to get their legs back before actual playoffs start... although even if that doesn't happen, teams will at least be on (mostly) even footing. The first round could be pretty rough as players chip off the rust though.

In other Naughty Dog news, apparently someone claiming to be affiliated with Naughty Dog and/or Sony is going around issuing copyright takedown strikes on not only Youtube channels that discuss the leaks, but also those that discuss that the leaks occurred at all (without discussing what was in those leaks). Lovely.

In a hilarious follow-up to this (which has been getting incredibly ridiculous), Sony today posted a new official trailer for The Last of Us 2 today...which was promptly copyright-stricken by...themselves.

This made me laugh out loud. Thanks for sharing - wouldn't have seen it otherwise.
What a debacle.
