Nintendo Gaming / Oh you like video games? Name every game you beat in 2020
« on: December 31, 2020, 08:44:22 PM »
Insert image of Donkey Kong aiming a gun square at your face. He's got that grin on his face, you know the one. Definition of "beat" is up to your own personal interpretation.

I definitely played more titles this year but the playtime was probably around the same, because of the types of games I gravitated towards this year (More adventure games less RPGs).

Animal Crossing New Horizons
Crystallis
Daemon X Machina
Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope
Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan
Deadly Premonition Origins
Deadly Premonition 2
Earthbound
Heave Ho
Journey
Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Final Mix
Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories
Life is Strange
Life is Strange: Before the Storm
Mario 64
Metal Gear Rising Revengence
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Moving Out
Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight
Persona 4 Dancing All Night
Persona Q
Pokémon Ultra Sun
Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure
SMT Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
Sonic Forces
Steam World Dig 2
Steam World Heist
Streets Of Kamurocho
Super Puyo Puyo 2
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Tetris 99
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit
The Stretchers
Tonight We Riot
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
Until Dawn
Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
Yakuza Kiwami 2

My personal top recommendations have got to go to Xenoblade Chronicles DE, Life is Strange and Deadly Premonition 1.

Xenoblade takes a somewhat clunky masterpiece and smoothes down every single one of those rough edges with sandpaper. It's a joy to play and quality of life improvements fo tracking quests, trading and faster loading times, make older versions seem unplayable in retrospect. Glorious new music, HD visuals and new story content that adds to the Xenoblade canon without feeling too out of place. It was so easy to keep playing and playing that I did every quest and killed every secret boss except the last.

Life is Strange is such a beautiful game. The gameplay mechanics and the story are like Ying and Yang, you can't have one without the other. The story is so effective and heartbreaking because of the format, not in spite of it. The characters, the music, it all left a profound impression on me, there were tears, laughs and gasps in shock. What about Before the Storm you ask? Well I'm happy to report that this is also fantastic. It's a smaller, less grand story but it plays to it's own strengths. There's some really playful dialogue opportunities in Before the Storm that I feel surpass the original, despite being the little sister of the duology.

Deadly Premonition 1 is the work of an auteur. Trust me, this game has soul and a vision. It's a game I thought about for weeks and weeks after the fact. It has so many cool details you will only realise at the end, or will only realise after looking it up on YouTube. Deadly Premonition Archives has some great videos chronicling the timeline and all the easter eggs, they make a compelling argument for it being the greatest game of all time. Even the more Resident Evil style action segments are actually quite fun. It's not deep mechanically but simple is good, Agent York smashing a zombie with a pipe is satisfying every time. It's greatness is what makes Deadly Premonition 2 so disappointing. The sequel is undercooked like raw chicken. Don't get me wrong it has some hilarious moments that the series does so well. But they only paper over back steps in the combat, side quests, narrative, music and world design. Let's not even talk about the technical performance.

Nintendo Gaming / How are y'all Switch Pro Controllers holding up?
« on: October 16, 2019, 12:14:08 AM »
Considering getting a pro controller because my joy cons are drifting and I live in Europe. However it sounds like those also have the same drift issue albeit to a lesser extent. Are there any switch controllers out there that are built to last or is the pro the best option?

Nintendo Gaming / Why was Nagoshi in the Switch presentation?
« on: September 19, 2019, 09:23:28 AM »
The producer for the Yakuza series got up on the January 2017 switch presentation to talk about how he wants to make an interesting game for switch, but nothing came of it.

Do you think it was cancelled, still in development or he was just speaking on behalf of Sega?

Listen to this stuff on the EU Eshop...

"Electric Stuff
A love-likeness pseudo-talk game "Electric Love" that is a topic in the smartphone"

Playing this game is LIKE being in love apparently.

"A little embarrassing, in a conversation that pounding, romance skill UP! !"

Yeah I'd be pretty embarrassed too.

"Ema Sakura
- Cosplayers
- Birthday November 9
- Blood type B type
- Hobby illustrations, Karaoke
- Costume you like favorite cute"

Good to know her blood type is B Type.

"What is Pure / Electric Love?
- Reply to questions from her!
Please please her, sometimes a little annoying. Kakehike is important for love affair!"

Please please her is quite a mouthful and I'm honestly afraid to google Kakehike.

"- Mail arrives according to the contents of the conversation!
You also have movies attached ..."

Curious about the content of those movies...

"The end of the conversation will change depending on the choice."

THE CHOICE!? What choice would that be?

"Over 150 stories still images + 8 movies! Let's aim at perfection!"

Yes! Let's aim at perfection!

"How to play
1. Launch the application and select "TELL" or touch.

2. Select or touch the content you want to talk to.
3. Choose a call or touch to start love.
4. Select the option displayed on the screen or touch to advance the conversation"

TOUCH TO START LOVE

"Notices
This application is only available in Japanese."

So attempting to translate this was a useless exercise? Not to mention that the Switch is region free.

Also the genre is Simulation / Communication / Strategy / Training. The training part presumably training you to talk to women.

Nintendo Gaming / Super Mario Switch
« on: October 20, 2016, 08:24:19 PM »
There's a new Mario game!

- The camera is placed behind the back unlike recent Mario games.
- "Advanced techniques" like the triple jump and long jump return.
- Has a distinct Mexican flavor with deserts, cacti and sombreros.
- One of the themes I've picked up on is ice. The fountain in the town square has frozen over, icicles are hanging from the telephone wires and buildings, as well as big blocks of ice that can be seen in the second scene.
- At 0:07 there is an objective marker or maybe just some floating triangles in the town on the left hand side, this makes me think this first location is part of the hub world.

Nintendo Gaming / Professor Layton will rise again?...Yes!
« on: June 24, 2016, 09:25:30 AM »
http://neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1238698

There are rumblings from the man himself Akihiro Hino via live stream that Professor Layton will rise again with classic Layton gameplay, but this time starring a new main character.

Layton 7 for smartphones and 3DS was revealed at Level 5 Vision 2013, the game went completely silent for two years and was shown again at Level 5 Vision 2015 but looked completely different. The development must have been restarted as it went from a "Puzzle RPG" to what looks like a riff on the game werewolf. The new Layton 7 was scheduled for Summer 2015 for IOS and Android in Japan and looked quite far along in development, but here we are in 2016 and the game has still not been released.

This year's Level 5 Vision is scheduled for July 27th and trailers for Yokai Watch 3 and Snack World have been released ahead of the event.

Inspiration for the series and credited Puzzle Master on all of the Layton games: Akira Tago, passed away this March at the age of 90.

It's ambiguous if it will only ever be on the eshop, not sure about Europe. I imagine it will since Teddy Together for Rhythm Heavensake is getting a physical release.

Nintendo Gaming / Etrian Odyssey V
« on: March 03, 2016, 07:50:51 PM »
A short trailer was shown today on the 03/03 direct. Also a Niconico stream will occur on the 5th of March with more details on the game.

https://youtu.be/iNyWixkbXIE?t=21m55s
http://gematsu.com/2016/03/etrian-odyssey-v-story-outline-first-screenshots

I know nothing about Etrian Odyssey other than I know it'll be something I'll enjoy since it's an RPG made by ATLUS, I just haven't found the time yet to play them, I'm thinking start with Untold 1 -> 4 -> Untold 2, then maybe Etrain Mystery Dungeon if I'm feeling like another Chunsoft mystery dungeon game.

Nintendo Gaming / Is Wii U Nintendo's best home console ever?
« on: January 28, 2016, 06:48:23 AM »
I would say pound for pound that the Nintendo Wii U is not only the best Nintendo console, it is the best console period, PS3 comes close but in the end the gap is in the favour of Wii U, in my opinion of course.

Please allow me to list some titles that are playable on your Wii U right now if you wanted. Punch-Out!!!, Mega Man 2, Super Mario Bros 3, Ufouria, Super Metriod, Super Mario World, Earthbound, Street Fighter 2, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario 64, Paper Mario, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Sin and Punishment, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Golden Sun and Castlevania Aria of Sorrow.

Not only do you have access to all of these titles, but every Wii U comes with a Wii included meaning you have access to great games like; Xenoblade Chronicles, Pandora's Tower, Sin and Punishment Star Successor, Okami, Resident Evil 4, The Last Story, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Mario Galaxy 2, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Sonic Colors, Metroid Prime Trilogy and Trauma Center.

With the Wii comes the Wii shop channel, meaning provided you have the controllers you can have access to; Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, World of Goo, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Ecco The Dolphin, Lords of Thunder and Cave Story.

Mix in all the Wii U disc based software and eshop download titles and I would say that the volume and quality of games available makes it a landslide victory over any Nintendo console. 2nd place I would put the Wii due to it's amazing library and true GameCube backwards compatibility, if you really love GameCube games I could see someone placing Wii over Wii U and it's up to your opinion really, but for me it's gotta be Wii U.

https://kantopia.wordpress.com/2015/12/22/fire-emblem-wii-unreleased-design-document-translations-fe-25th-anniversary/

It was in development after Radient Dawn for the Wii was released to mediocre sales, and was an attempt to bring in a new audience by convaying the feel of Fire Emblem but have the gameplay of a JRPG. It was a cancelled due to lack of direction and they went on to make Fire Emblem 12 for DS that shook up the conventions of FE making it more appealing for a wider audience but still retaining the SRPG gameplay style. However for whatever reason Fire Emblem 12 was never released in the West.

I feel in retrospect cancelling it may have been the wrong decision considering the DS has many JRPG's whereas the Wii only has a handful. What was shown looks very ambitious and could have been a very unique addition to the library instead of the more conservative subsequent games. Now though we have #FE which isn't conservative in the slightest, of course it will most likely sell very poorly but I appreciate Nintendo throwing these niche games a bone.

Nintendo Gaming / Calling Sin & Punishment 2 experts
« on: November 26, 2015, 11:38:11 AM »
Is it actually possible to get through this part without taking damage?
https://youtu.be/GVSZuDGd49YY
I'm taking about the mines at 1:58, the person on the video just switches to Isa and takes the hits with his health, but I haven't unlocked that yet.
I'm on hard, playing as Kachi, stage 5, using Wii remote controls, I'm using jump and dodge and all that. But the mines seem like they are far too narrow and your character always wants to veer to the middle for some reason making it impossible to get in the lane, stay in it and then react fast enough to get into the next one. I've looked through FAQs and videos online but I haven't been able to see anyone get through it without just having a full health bar and brute forcing it.

Nintendo Gaming / Should we stop buying digital games until March?
« on: October 30, 2015, 12:15:34 PM »
Now that we know the new rewards programme is on it's way would it be a good idea to just stop buying digital Nintendo games? As until it is implemented games bought during this period won't count towards the programme, there are some exceptions like the Project Zero and Xenoblade special editions but most games aren't going any where and will still be available once the programme is active. It's not clear if the programme will be for only digital products or will also include retail, but it should be safe to buy existing physical games as I don't see them going back and retrofitting the new programme for old games. As for digital games though like The Swindle, or Runbow, or Extreme Exorcism or Steam World Heist I don't see any reason to buy now instead of waiting.

Nintendo Gaming / Gera Po Morphic Content
« on: September 25, 2015, 08:55:23 PM »
While not necessarily a game, the Yokai Watch anime will be airing in the US on Disney XD on 5th October at 5pm ET/PT. To celebrate here's a nonsensical Japanese song localised into English. Got to hand it to them, never would have thought of rhyming Idaho with Gero Po (whatever the **** a Gera Po is).

Upon first viewing I initially thought the dance involved flipping the double bird however after closer inspection that is not the case.

Nintendo Gaming / Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice
« on: September 21, 2015, 05:08:34 PM »
Hey it's our deity of justice: Apollo Justice.
Never played 4 but I hear it's the black sheep of the franchise, I went irregularly from Duel Destinies to Layton Vs Phoenix Wright to Edgeworth's Investigations to the first Ace Attorney to working my way through Justice For All. Gonna get round to it eventually.

Although from what I've played of Apollo's parts in Duel Destinies he's a total badass and I'm glad to see him back, I really liked Athena although I feel her story has already been told. New interesting characters should be a priority but if one extra character should return I would like it to be Gumshoe, he has a personality that makes it impossible to be mad at him and we need to see him in glorious 3D. The Ace Attorney series has some of the slickest 3D models around such that transitioning from the polygonal games back to the sprite based games didn't feel strange at all.
