I think it wasn't a bad idea to go a step back, the later 2d games are full of clutter and especially the flight items changed the gameplay a lot. Personally I liked how they only gave you the fireflower this time.

Making New Super Mario Bros. a step back means that there is much to expand for New Super Mario Bros. 2 & 3. And I think a 2 & 3 are very likely because of how well this one is selling... Nintendo knows a cash cow when they see one.

But will NSMB2 be like? The US version or the Japanese one? and what about NSMB3? Is that where all the crazy suits will start or do you think they won't follow the pattern/style of the original games too closely?

I really don't care if they decide to just use the mushroom and fireflower, which I think while the other two are a little neat but in general a waste of time.  I just hope that their are more varied enemies, even if they are palette swaps,  different themes worlds that stick to the theme of the world in all parts, and get rid of the repetative castles if they are all going to be pretty much the same at the end.  Also I don't like Bowser Jr.  Long Live the Koopa Kids.

I think with NSMB we were incorrectly lead to believe it was a new Super Mario Bros. game and not just a new game of Super Mario Bros. If that makes sense!

I would actually believe that if the mini and the shell weren't in it or the overworld map, and Bowser Jr.

The idea being that it's the original SMB made with the knowledge of future games.

I was wondering what we we're having at those two barbecues.

Anyway if it is with future knowledge then why wasn't it better designed?

I was just picking through the old data to get some things settled and ran across this.  Sort of reminds me of another system now.  Which is doing better then its precessor ironically enough.  Though I do have to say they probably won't have a non-gamer revolution on there hands.

UK Analysts Screen Digest reveal the DS's worldwide install base at...
Quote

As at the end of Q1 2007, Nintendo DS had an installed base of 38 million across the PAL region, Japan and the US compared with 20 million for Sony PSP. Nintendo has confirmed to Screen Digest that the global installed base as at the end of May 2007 is in excess of 41m. Screen Digest forecast no substantive change in respective hardware buy rates and believe that at the end of 2011, Nintendo DS will have an installed base of 112 million and PSP, 67 million.

The DS may be able to hit that target, but I don't believe that the PSP will hit 67 million. Sales are dead in Japan, solid-but-definitely-not-=spectacular in the US, and behind the DS once again in Europe. I think the PSP will have the same problem that the XBox 360 has (exclusively appealing to a hardcore segment only) with an additional compounding problem (low games sales...like wow). Maybe more like 45 - 50 million worldwide would be a better number for them?

Also revealed:
Quote

Of DS gamers in Europe 54% are female (compared with 40% for PSP).
...
In addition GameVision research also reveals that 52% of European DS owners are 14 years old and under (compared with 28% for PSP), the youngest profile of any platform, demonstrating the importance of pricing a handheld such that parents are not deterred from purchasing on behalf of their offspring.
