Nintendo Gaming / Pinging the Pong with Rockstar!
« on: July 18, 2007, 02:18:51 AM »
Quote

The nightmare of living in a Wii Play world of ping pong is almost to an end as Rockstar has announced that their Xbox 360 darling, Table Tennis, will be making its way over to Nintendo's world of waggle.

Another rumour confirmed. Nice to see Rockstar/Take2 using some common sense for a change.

General Gaming / David Jaffe Goes Apeshit Crazy
« on: May 02, 2007, 10:35:23 AM »
LOLz:

http://criminalcrackdown.blogspot.com/

It all started when he posted a response to GameSpot's 6.7 for Calling All Cars (mistake #1). Then he made another posted calling the respondents to the original post all sorts of nasty names (mistake #2). Then he got all pissy because Joystiq made fun of him (mistake #3) and decided to close his blog for the time being (mistake #4). You can see Joystiq's response to his rather childish name calling here:

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/02/jaffe-swears-off-blogging-was-it-something-we-said/

I'm not a huge Joystiq fan but this is just, well, hilarious. I actually think this quote by Jaffe really proves the man is crazy:

"I like GAMESPOT, have respect for them, always have. Hell I pay for the damn thing every year."

Obviously no one in their right mind visits GameSpot, let alone pays for it or likes it.

Does anyone have this? It looks quite good. I'll never understand why they didn't do it for DS (other than it being Capcom). It would've sold so much better.

ETA: Can someone move this to Other Systems?

NWR Feedback / Why visit NWR?
« on: April 13, 2007, 12:57:02 PM »
With the recent hullabaloo over reviews, I got to wondering why if so many people are angry they visit.

I mainly visit for the forums, but I also greatly enjoy the mailbags. I usually read the reviews but I must admit I usually just look at the highs and lows on Gamerankings when considering a purchase. I never listen to podcasts because, well, they're basically chat shows with nothing to look at and who needs that?

General Gaming / The DualSuck
« on: April 03, 2007, 07:25:42 PM »
How has this lasted three generations? It's one of the worst controllers ever. Playing Shadow of the Colossus today I was ready to throw it out. The analogue sticks are painfully out of place and their height makes them annoying. Their sensitivity is also horrendous and they're terrible to use. The d-pad is the worst currently is use. The shoulder buttons are awkward and the entire thing's shape is completely unergonomic.

How can anyone stand this?

Apparently Websters has changed the definition of "maturity" from "of or relating to a condition of full development" to "the state which 13 year old boys just passing puberty wish they existed in."

Not that I have anything against nudity in games, but, well, it's hard to argue games don't try and exploit young adults below their rating cut off when silly stuff like this only appeals to young adults and people with that level of maturity.

Nintendo Gaming / Super. Paper. Mario. April. 2007.
« on: January 22, 2007, 09:07:48 AM »
That's right. According to the latest NP we finally get it this April! Just for the record this thread shall allow absolutely no complaining or mentioning of any previous systems this game might have been considered for.

Quote

Takes place in the town of Flipside, where a giant black hole looms overhead, complete with floating math equations (that old story again huh?!)

Mario gains the ability to change perspective at will, switching from the normal side scrolling 2d view to a 3d view of the 2d “paper mario like” world

Switching camera from 2d to 3d is necessary. Some puzzles can only be solved by switching the camera to reveal new paths on a level

Wiimote is held sideways, 2 button is used to jump, A button to switch view.

Nintendo Gaming / Matt Calls Out IGN Editors in Defense of Zelda and GOTY
« on: January 17, 2007, 04:11:40 PM »
I know the other thread got moved to General, but this is a specific attack regarding the treatment of Zelda:

Quote

As you pointed out, though, what is far worse is the level of displayed arrogance and ignorance by some of the editors. If you watch the video, you will hear some of these people rip into Zelda as though it was a major disappointment and unworthy of even making the nominations list. The kicker is that these very same commentators clearly never played so much as 10 minutes of the game. In our written roundtable, which I encourage you to read on Insider, Peer and I made the case that - accidentally or on purpose - there is an editorial faction at IGN that does not give Nintendo's games a fair shake. I don't think there is any disputing that point after watching and reading our Game of the Year wrap-ups.

http://wii.ign.com/mail/

Second letter. He says more and its worth reading. I know a lot of you hate IGN, but I keep telling you the Nintendo employees are not frauds like the rest of the consoles (and I'm right).

Nintendo Gaming / 3rd Parties in 2007?
« on: January 05, 2007, 07:01:21 AM »
There's Sonic...and? Nintendo has a bevy of great games but I'm having trouble finding any significant non-Nintendo games for this year. The lineup is richer than the Gamecube's first full year but the 3rd parties are even more barren. There's Crystal Chronicles, I guess. SSX Blur and Brothers in Arms count too, but they're not exactly exclusives. No More Heroes?

Just seems slim...

Reader Reviews / Super Castlevania IV
« on: January 01, 2007, 09:17:27 AM »
This is a great game. It's really classic in the sense that you never seen a modern platformer with controls this exact. Modern games (including GBA/DS Castlevanias) all use the (brilliant) Mario-style controls where you have a little looseness. That works great in Mario and many games. In Castlevania, however, the exact controls work beautiful. The preciseness of them make it a really solid experience. The stick you get just when you land from a jump really makes it feel like the character has weight. Truly classic gameplay.

Also, the game has a perfect level of difficulty. The VC's beautiful save feature means you don't need to use the horrid passwords. Because of this it's a smooth ride to replay and master the levels as you go. Some of the bosses are HARD though, and I've spent the most time facing them.

The best part, though, is the awesome music. A lot of Castlevania games are well known for their music (Symphony of the Night) and this is no exception. One of the most complex and technically impressive 16-bit soundtracks, and also one of the best.

9.5/10 and a MUST purchase on the VC

Nintendo Gaming / When do you strap your Wii?
« on: January 01, 2007, 06:35:52 AM »
When do you use your Wii strap? I've never had it slip or anything but I always use it during WiiSports (except golf) . I don't use it during Zelda or when browsing menus/Miing/messaging/etc. If I got a game like Wario Ware I'd probably use it too. I always keep the strap, though. The only time I connect it through the attachments is for boxing, though.

General Gaming / I guess Final Fantasy XII really was the final fantasy...
« on: December 31, 2006, 10:18:55 AM »
...because XIII sure as hell isn't fantasy.

http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=39619&mode=thread&order=0

This has been a major concern of my, and is one of my major problems with VII. But this one goes beyond acceptable. The gameplay could be interesting but I hope it's a disaster. If you want to make sci-fi then make a sci-fi series. FANTASY means FANTASY.

Nintendo Gaming / So who got a Wii for Christmas!?
« on: December 25, 2006, 02:23:45 AM »
I DID!!! OMG...IT'S UPDATING NOW...WAITING...FOR UPDATES...

Man, it's so pretty My mother is a genius, she somehow managed to get one (used my two aunts in two different towns to find one, and one got the LAST one!). I got TP with it, but have just played Sports so far, and am updating now so I can download the browser and do weather and later today I'll buy a VC game (got a classic controller too). It's so awesome! I was totally shocked as I didn't figure she had a shot at getting one. I hope some others here were as lucky!

Nintendo Gaming / The Remake Disgrace
« on: December 16, 2006, 06:06:35 PM »
This can just as easily apply to the DS (Diddy Kong Racing DS spurred this post) but I chose here because so many titles for the Wii (Princes of Persia, for example) are guilty. I'm talking about the lazy, obnoxious and unacceptable obsession lately with developers making news games that are simply updated old games. Nintendo is infamous for this (Mario 64 DS?) and Capcom basically defined it with RE on the GameCube. But now Ubisoft is doing it and Trauma Center was a remake as well. Prince of Persia should have been an ORIGINAL game, not a two year old game with new controls! There is no reason DKR on the DS shouldn't be a new game. If you want to remake a game, fine, but do so within a new game (Mario Kart Advance, for example). I am already finding so many games move from "will" or "probably will" buy to "not on your life." Diddy Kong Racing was a real must-have for me...not anymore. I was going to buy Prince, assuming good reviews, until I heard. The only reason I want Trauma Center is that I don't have the DS version.

I don't object to rereleasing games. I'm all for it. The VC is a great idea. New versions (such as console games for handhelds) are great. But doing a remake instead of a real game is just not acceptable. Give me content or stop making games. It's gone beyond annoying.

That's right. FF:CC for the DS will be local play amongst friends only. Right now there might not be any wi-fi at all.

Director: Mitsuru Kamiyama (FFCC coder)
Char. Design: Toshiyuki Itahana (FFIX, Chocobo)
Lead chars are twins: Yuri and Cherinka
Up to 4 players
Vertical position affects battles (i.e. there is a Y axis)
There’s a new jump command.
No crystal gauge.
Not full voice but there will be some voices in it.
Single player involves changing between chars.
Theme is family love and brotherly love.
Multiplayer is currently not Wi-Fi - Square wants you to play in the presence of friends (oh noes).
Not even confirmed if there will be Wi-Fi content of any kind.
Kawazu is not involved.

Wow, the DS really is the world's most powerful system! For the Wii would be awesome as well, but this is just as good. (Though the DS needs it less?) Still, this is a major blow for the Sony!

General Gaming / These new Super-Serious Game Trailers...
« on: December 08, 2006, 06:44:19 AM »
What do you guys think of this latest trend MS is pioneering of making super-serious game trailers that use all CGI and kind of a scenario or overall premise? Ones like GOW which tried to make a fairly straight forward shooter seem thematic and deep or the HALO 3 teaser that uses kids at the start, trying to give some kind of weight to one of the least developed heroes of all time (and stupidest/least developed plots of all time).

Personally I thought the HALO trailer was annoying because the kids are very very badly tied into it. It's a very lame attempt. There is no character to Master Chief (there's personality, though) and the HALO plot is merely an excuse to travel from room/locale to room/locale killing the enemies in each room/locale before moving on. The stories of the games do not matter (as proven by every reviewing saying the single player sucks and then proceeding to give it a 10 for multiplayer alone). Perhaps HALO 3 will change this, but I thought the kids were just silly. The rest of the trailer, however, was quite nice and I thought it worked as a trailer. So overall I didn't mind it. (the John Lennon "Instant Karma" remix really works though, lol)

The GOW thing was one of the most idiotic trailers I have ever seen (if not the most). Mad World did not fit that footage IN ANY WAY. The fact that people actually liked that trailer and went insane over it really angers me. It means we have to endure more trailers like it. It was such an exercise in vanity for the game creators, like someone would create at home mixing footage of a game they like. Basically they watched Donnie Darko, loved the song, and were all "OMG tiz song rulz, letz makez uz a trailerz wiz it and drinkz beerz and havez sexz...hahahaha...wevz neverz had sexz but wez coolz." And we get this absurd trailer which all the morons of the MS fanbase (sorry, but in this case it applies) love because they're shocked to hear music that isn't on the radio. Broad and totally unfair generalization, but the trailer annoys me to no end.

In short, HALO 3 trailer is just poorly executed, otherwise fine. But the GOW trailer is going to doom us to a generation of similar trailers that have absolutely NOTHING to do with the game. Not to mention the thousands of fan made trailers for every game conceivable that will be done using that song.

General Chat / Why do people buy from EB/GameStop!?
« on: December 07, 2006, 08:36:28 PM »
I'm looking at today's GameFaqs poll and seeing over 50% of respondents buy their games at EB/GameStop. Why on Earth would ANYONE do this? The only time I ever buy there is if they have a game no one else does or for some special promotion. But regularly? Never. They're more expensive for one thing, they're also ignorant and rude, their stores are small, everything is badly kept, their used games and trade in scheme is offensive to the consumer, etc. etc. I can't think of a single reason. It's not like someone who objects to the big box retailers is doing any good by going to EB/GameStop, they're just as corporate. I just don't get it?

Nintendo Gaming / It seems we have a winner...GameCube philes be damned!
« on: November 01, 2006, 06:57:58 AM »
Forgive me for not burying this in the Zelda thread, but it's just SO LONG and OFF TOPIC.

Translated by kotaku.

Famitsu says...
“The oneness with the character has improved greatly than a past controller.” Take mini games, like fishing, which are done with the Wii remote. They called the Wii-mote operation “more intuitive.” Buttons are for things like jumping. While the new controller and nunchaku are for moving and attacking. Likewise, they couldn’t say enough good things about the game. The November 10th issue of Famitsu will feature a more in-depth look on paper.

GameWatch says...
Flicking or shaking it causes Link to attack. Game Watch noted that the controller is light and does not cause the wrist to get tired after extended play. Play is intuitive, and Link moves smoothly. Controlling Wolf Link is like controlling human Link. The game’s graphics, they liked them. The site states, “Controlling Link and moving the controller and seeing Link synchronize with the movements was a different kind of exhilaration from anything out there.” Game Watch calls the one-two compatibility punch of Twilight Princess and the Wii-mote “preeminent.”

So, who's still silly enough to buy the GCN version?
