I wish ALL Nintendo fans could just enjoy seeing the Wii dominating the market.
It saddens me that so many supposed loyal fans are hating on it.
Yeah, this holiday season's lineup SUCKS for us but we've been through this before.
Some people are acting like the Wii is the first Nintendo console to go through a dry spell. The N64 and Gamecube were just as bad and much worse at times. Back then, we'd be looking forward to the big holiday title only to have it be delayed into the new year, leaving us with NOTHING.
We spent the last two generations complaining about lackluster holiday lineups, endless delays, and pathetic sales. Can we just be thankful we now only have ONE of the three to complain about. These ARE better days.

The crappy holiday lineup doesn't mean Nintendo has abandoned the hardcore gamer as some have accused. They need to stop using this casuals market as a scapegoat. This is just more of the same crap we've put up with for over a decade. But, you know what, we've remained fans through all these years of miserable game droughts and when the next masterpiece of Mario Galaxy proportions does finally arrive on the Wii, all will be forgiven.
In the meantime let's just be thankful Nintendo is finally kicking some competitor ass and becoming a household name again. Nintendo is back on top and the best is yet to come. Just not until next year.

I agree Michael8983. As hardcore fans, especially hardcore Nintendo fans, we ALWAYS have stuff to complain about. But I, for one, feel that things have improved so dramatically over past consoles, and I really feel that this is really the best time to be a Nintendo fan in more than a decade.

It's a pity that the rest of the industry isn't quite keeping pace with the new reality of Nintendo's dominance, but *shrug* I won't let that stop me from reveling in maniacal laughter at a resurgent Nintendo.

I disagree on one big point the most obvious reason that Nintendo didn't have a big presence in this holiday season is because they unloaded their big guns already Metroid, Mario, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, Wii Fit and such which left us as Wii Music and Animal Crossing and also Fatal Frame 4 and Disaster Day of Crisis unreleased.

One of the biggest issues I think is that people discount 3rd party games on Wii and despite all the naysayers from so called "hardcore" gamers and game media journalists that has their heads up their collective asses, the Wii 3rd party situation is fine and it's as healthy as it was during the NES/SNES era and guess what those eras were filled with crappy license tie ins and the dreaded shovel ware. The ironic thing that people keep forgetting is that Nintendo's strategy with Wii is essentially the same as DS.

I must part of the silent minority. I love Nintendo. I love their games. What I love more is the games they attract. I am not talking about whether the Wii gets enough of one genera or another. Quality is something that Nintendo attracts. Sure, other consoles have their hits, but with Nintendo setting the bar so high, regardless of how much the third parties complain, it does lift everybody's standards. While the third parties try to drive gaming to the lowest common denominator, Nintendo does the opposite. While third parties publish their Horzes and Catz, you get Nintendogs. For every 3 Sim expansion you get an Animal Crossing. Every Halo a Metroid. Every 5 Fifa we get a Strikers. Never concerned by the trend by making a new trend.

However, by setting that very same bar so high, it has made us self confessed gamers completely insatiable in our appetite for new games, better games, MORE games. We will never be satisfied, no matter how many games we play or how many hours we commit. Game droughts are our fault  as much as it is the game companies.

That being said, I rather buy fewer, BETTER games than more games with rolling rosters or new maps. Most games aren't worth the 50-60 USD price tag. yet most companies out there continue to push for a more irrational market that says that every game is worth that much.

All said, quit bitching and go play some games.

The Wii has been a good console for me. It is probably Nintendo's most diverse in their game output and I think that is a GOOD thing. Yeah not all are "games" but that still does not make it bad.

I agree.  Too bad it'll never happen.

I agree with all of this; I think it'd probably be best if all new games weren't always priced the same, especially since they don't all have the same budget. The one-price-fits-all model that drives movie tickets and (most) DVDs just is not going to push Speed Racer: The Video Game out the door. Now THAT'S something I would've paid $20 for easy...as of right now, WB Games hasn't gotten a cent out of me.

Ha, one game is announced and suddenly the Wii is a third-party juggernaut.  Guess that's the way it goes when you're looking for something - anything - to hang your hat on to prove that third-parties care.

What's cool about DQ X is that it's actually a game I'm anticipating for Wii.  That hasn't happened since Metroid Prime 3.

I mean I'm happy that you like it, but I don't know what it has to do with the obvious impending Japanese third party rush to the Wii that WILL result from this announcement.

And yes, one game can turn the tide.  The Wii will become a third party juggernaut, just like when it happened to the DS with Dragon Quest IX (and FFIII).  They were announced, a bunch of other companies decided to bring games to the DS because they wanted profit instead of American Hardcore Approval.

I don't know how much Dragon Quest X is going to change the big picture.  I mean, it's not like the Wii ISN'T selling.  There's already no reason for third-parties to ignore the Wii with the sales numbers it has, and yet for the most part they are.  Dragon Quest X is just going to add to the Wii sales pile-on, adding tens of millions of Wiis to the system's lifetime sales.  That's huge, but it's not like it's going to give third-parties that are already ignoring its massive userbase impetus to change their minds.  It seems like their mind is already made up as to what will and will not sell on the platform.  Maybe this will change, but I'm too cynical to believe it.

I can see the logic though, don't get me wrong.  Street Fighter II was huge for the SNES, and it almost singlehandedly saved the system.  However, I think this is a bit of a different case for one main reason: hardware.  Now, I'm not saying that you CAN'T do all types of games on the Wii.  Even though it's not as powerful as the PS3 and 360, it can do anything that the PS2/GameCube can, and both of those consoles had plenty of "hardcore" games.  However, in that generation all hardware was 1:1 in terms of performance, basically.  GameCube and XBox were marginally more powerful than PS2, but there was nothing like the performance gap that exists between the Wii and PS3/360.  The same holds true for the SNES and Genesis; they were basically 1:1 performance-wise, so the decision regarding whether or not to develop games on either platform typically had nothing to do with hardware.

In this generation, that isn't the case.  You already have third-parties not developing on Wii simply because they want to design games that take advantage of the best hardware out there and everything it can do.  That means their primary focus is on PC, PS3, and 360 (especially since they can port their code across all three platforms in much less time than it would take them to create a Wii game - concept, design, engine, and all - for Wii).  They couldn't give a rip about the Wii's motion controls because the console can't create the type of graphically immersive world that they want, or they can't do as robust an online mode as they want to.  I'm not saying this is right, or wrong, or good or bad business.  But I think it's the case.  Sure, tons of third-parties make games for the DS, but the expectations on a handheld are lower than on a console from both developers and gamers.  On the Wii I can easily see developers saying, "OK, here's the game we want to make.  We can put it on Wii, but we'd have to rework a whole lot of stuff, make a completely new graphics engine from scratch, and basically compromise our vision to a certain degree.  And on top of that, we're not even sure if the Wii audience will be receptive to it.  I think it's safer to do it on PC and then port it to PS3/360."

It's not as simple a choice as in the past.  It used to be that companies could just sit back and pick the sales frontrunner, because their games would look the same and be designed in the same way across all the platforms out there.  This time around, the Wii seems to be seen as a "specialty" market that not every developer wants to wade into.

At the very least I'm hoping that the DQX announcement opens the gates for JRPG development for the Wii. I don't expect a sea change across genres, but in the single important (to me) genre of JRPGs, I do dope for a significant improvement.
