And here's another thing Nintendo needs to stop doing - stop bundling their consoles with first party games - people will buy them anyway. Work out a deal and bundle your console with Arkham Origins or Call of Duty: Ghosts, the NES/SNES/N64 days are long over - if you want to help 3rd party developers, make an effort to push their games.

I get the impression that pretty much any third party AAA developer expects some form of Subsidy for bringing their game to a platform.

Paid ads, bundles, money hats for timed exclusives, money hats for exclusive DLC.

I don't think this kind of market is sustainable in the long run, but in the short term, payola is required to get a port.

If it was just a matter of sales, we would see a lot more third party games on the 3DS.

Honestly Nintendo needs to to a Watch Dogs bundle or something and do a big promotion showing how Wii U is the best way to play the game. They should have aggressively gone after GTAV and did the same thing with it.

Why this is not the case is reallly baffling, considering 3DS has become dominant platform this year and will only keep getting bigger.

Ubisoft really shot themselves in the foot with that one. I just wonder how the delay affected sales of the Wii U version.
Well if they had released it on time, I would have bought it on release (so that's 1 lost/delayed sale), as that's back when I used to use my Wii U (for things not streaming video related).

I find that often the other guys will have a bundle that comes with a game that I don't want and it comes across like forcing the consumer to buy junk.  Nintendo's first party bundles seems more like putting the game people actually want in the bundle so that the consumer gets a deal.  It's consumer-friendly vs. publisher-friendly.

Options are good. With digital distribution now prominent on Nintendo consoles they should allow you to 'create your own bundle'. Pick any game and accessory with your console purchase. That would bee good for the consumer.

Bundling with Skylanders is pointless. If Microsoft and SONY can make Call of Duty bundles, why can't Nintendo? I'm not saying Call of Duty is the most important game or anything, but I'm sure it would help sell consoles and games if they did it that way.

Now imagine if the Wii U was a hybrid console where the controller was also a stand-alone system that wirelessy attached to the base for at home big screen gaming.

Or what if the next big handheld stole a concept like the Chromecast and was able to wirelessly just display up on the big screen when you were at home, using the handheld itself as the touch screen display. The only thing left to figure out is if the base unit still accepts disc, or do they both accept proprietary cards that go in the handheld?

There's probably a reason Nintendo is putting their handheld and console hardware engineers together. Going by the Japanese market and other technology trends, that very thing may yet be a possibility.

The second quarter report for the fiscal year ending March 2014 is in.
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2013/131030e.pdf

Quote
1. Consolidated Operating Results

Nintendo continues to pursue its basic strategy of “Gaming Population Expansion” by offering compelling products that anyone can enjoy, regardless of age, gender or gaming experience.

During the six months ended September 30, 2013, Nintendo continued to experience strong sales in the Japanese market for “Nintendo 3DS (3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS),” as “Tomodachi Collection,” released in April in Japan, marked 1.63 million units in sales, while there have also been hit titles from third-party publishers. In the overseas markets, “Animal Crossing: New Leaf,” released in June in the Unites States and Europe, sold 2.01 million units (2.49 million units worldwide), while titles such as “Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon,” released in the previous fiscal year, and “Mario & Luigi: Dream Team” and “Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D,” both released in the current fiscal year, showed steady sales. As a result, the global sales of the “Nintendo 3DS” hardware and software reached 3.89 million and 27.38 million units respectively.

With respect to “Wii U,” Nintendo released the key first-party title “Pikmin 3” in July in Japan and Europe, and in August in the United States, as well as another key first-party title “The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD” in September in Japan and the United States, but the global sales of the “Wii U” hardware and software reached only 0.46 million and 6.30 million units respectively.

Regarding “Nintendo DS (DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL),” the worldwide sales of its hardware and software were
0.10 million and 5.25 million units respectively. Also, the sales of the “Wii” hardware and software were 0.47 million and 14.90 million units respectively.

Net sales as a result were 196.5 billion yen (of which overseas sales were 129.1 billion yen, or 65.7% of the total sales). The “Wii U” hardware still has a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits, owning mainly to its markdown in the United States and Europe, leading to a gross profit of 62.0 billion yen. The operating loss was 23.2 billion yen as total selling, general and administrative expenses exceeded gross profit due to enhancements in advertising activities to increase sales, and research and development for the “Wii U” software among others. As a result of exchange gains totaling 18.3 billion yen due to depreciation of the yen at the end of this period compared with the one at the end of the last fiscal year, ordinary income was 1.2 billion yen and net income was 0.6 billion yen.

Still an operating loss.
Nintendo plans to accelerate digital distribution and reduce hardware costs as some ways to increase profits.

They need a heavy marketing blitz of high quality ads games, especially from 3rd parties, to show that the Wii U won't be dropped the moment the PS4 & Xbone release.

Fixed.  Marketing's a serious problem with the Wii U, but the lack of games and the total lack of belief that the Wii U has a future beyond Smash Bros. next year is a far bigger one.

Well the NSMB U bundles come out soon and Mario 3D World gaining a lot of hype.  Since Nintendo always gets a huge boast during the holiday, it's still a good chance they'll sell another 5 million Wii U.  They sold over 3 million Wii U's last holiday and that was at $350 with the only major game NSMB U.  Well this holiday it'll be $300 with NSMB bundled together along with some other titles that are bigger then most of the games they had last fall.

So selling 5 million Wii U's during the 2013 holiday worldwide isn't that unrealistic of a goal.
