TalkBack / Splatoon Announced for Wii U
« on: June 10, 2014, 06:11:00 AM »

This new IP from Nintendo features online squad-based combat.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37715/splatoon-announced-for-wii-u

Nintendo announced a new Wii U game titled Splatoon during the E3 Digital Event. It’s an 8-player, 4-on-4 online action game which features paintgun-like battles played from a third-person perspective.

Players take control of characters who can switch forms from human to squid and back again. In human form, they can shoot out ink to cover the environment, and they can move quickly through their own ink when in squid form. Victory is determined based on which squad covered the most map area in their ink. The game makes full use of the Wii U gamepad, mapping the arena’s ink coverage in real time and allowing for quick movement to teammates by tapping on their player icons. The gyro sensor is also employed in some capacity.

Splatoon is scheduled for a 2015 release. We’ll be uncovering more details as E3 unfolds, so check back with us for more info.

TalkBack / Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse Coming to Wii U
« on: June 09, 2014, 01:02:19 PM »

WayForward’s third Shantae game will come to both current Nintendo platforms by late summer.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37677/shantae-and-the-pirates-curse-coming-to-wii-u

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, originally announced as a 3DS exclusive, is now scheduled to come to Wii U as well.

The Wii U version will feature the same in-game pixel art that IntiCreates designed for the 3DS version, but the presentation on the home console version will be enhanced by mixing in HD illustrations for menus, cutscenes, and dialogue. Off-TV play will also be available for those playing on Wii U.

Both versions are set to include touch screen-based inventory management and a real-time mapping system. Gameplay is also centered around new weapons and abilities due to the title character’s inability to use her traditional dance magic. The game is said to feature an expanded scope, containing double the content of the last game in the series, 2010’s Shantae: Risky’s Revenge.

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse was recently delayed from its March 2014 release date, but it’s now locked in to hit the eShop in late summer. Check out a new trailer for the game below.

TalkBack / Shovel Knight Scheduled for June 26 Release
« on: June 06, 2014, 12:24:00 AM »

Both Wii U and 3DS owners will get to dig in.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37618/shovel-knight-scheduled-for-june-26-release

The retro-inspired, Kickstarter-funded title Shovel Knight has been finalized for a June 26 eShop release on both Wii U and 3DS, developer Yacht Club Games has announced.

This date only applies to the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Yacht Club says they've been "working through localization and ratings specific to the European region" and hope to have something to announce soon in that regard.

Shovel Knight was originally scheduled to come out March 31, but was delayed for various reasons. "We hit some snags along the way and we’re sorry that we couldn’t deliver it sooner," the developer noted in the Kickstarter update post, "but hopefully, it will prove more than worth the wait!"

Backers of the game may be interested to know that its box art and manual have been finalized, as well. Those who pledged at the relevant tiers can download the NES-inspired digital manual now, in fact. However, there is no firm date set for when $50+ backers can expect their copies of the physical box.

Yacht Club Games is set to attend E3, where they "may be revealing a cool thing or two" regarding Shovel Knight.

Boxing and Baseball will come to the eShop on June 26 in America, June 27 in Europe, and June 28 in Australia. Pricing for these will follow the same model as previous digital Wii Sports Club titles, though a special promotion has been detailed for Europe and Australia in which a free trial for all five games will available for a 48-hour period to all--even those who have taken advantage of earlier free trials for the previous digital releases. The promotion has not been announced for America at this time.

TalkBack / 1001 Spikes Coming June 3 to Wii U, 3DS
« on: May 30, 2014, 12:54:55 PM »

Publisher reveals $5 loyalty discount for 3DS and post-release patch plans.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37565/1001-spikes-coming-june-3-to-wii-u-3ds

1001 Spikes will come out for both Wii U and 3DS on June 3.

The game will be available via eShop for $14.99 on both systems. However, a loyalty discount of $5 will be applicable to the 3DS version, so those who own other Nicalis titles on that platform--such as VVVVVV, NightSky, Cave Story, Ikachan or Grinsia--will be able to pick up this new title for $9.99.

1001 Spikes’ release has been pushed back a few times since its initial announcement in April 2012. Nintendo consoles were noticeably absent on the list of platforms when Nicalis announced earlier this week that the game was finally coming out on June 3, and it turns out this was partially because of a handful of technical issues discovered late in development for those versions of the game.

Left with the option of delaying the game for Nintendo fans or putting it out as-is, Nicalis has elected to release it with assurance from Nintendo that “an update could be issued within a couple of days of release to knock out those bugs.” No specific information has been put forth regarding what effect the bugs may have on players’ experiences with the game.

Check out our most recent impressions of the game here.

TalkBack / Chubbins Review
« on: May 30, 2014, 05:28:29 AM »

This somewhat unique platformer offers a lot of challenge but falls short in some other key areas.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/37563/chubbins-review

Chubbins was developed by two-man indie development team Dahku Creations and originally released for iOS. Its gameplay conceit feels like a concession to that platform’s limitations: players control the titular rotund rabbit to navigate increasingly complex platforming challenges strictly by moving left or right.

It’s essentially a platformer without a jump button. The catch is that players don’t need one, because the bunny is bouncing at all times. The strength of his jump is determined by the type of platform he’s most recently touched.

That the player can never truly sit still gives the game an anxious quality. Chubbins embraces this, presenting a series of demanding levels requiring precision and patience to overcome. The levels are well constructed and riff admirably on the game’s simple mechanics, making good use of a very limited array of obstacle types.

The levels are generally brisk and linear. They can also be quite challenging, and there’s a significant uptick in difficulty beginning in World 3. Some of the more sadistic sections can be maddening due to a lack of checkpoints, and there’s no way to save within worlds. So it’s necessary to finish the whole eight-level set in one session or start from scratch. This makes starting out on Hard mode a tough sell due to how frustrating the incremental progress toward a perfect World run can get, yet playing through with training wheels on the too-easy Soft mode as a rehearsal saps the feeling of accomplishment that can come from finally conquering a demanding challenge.

So it feels like the game never really nails down a good balance of difficulty, one that feels properly rewarding and doesn’t tip over the edge into frustration. The relatively small number of levels and their brevity lend significant emphasis to the idea of replaying them to perfect one's skills and set new records for fastest completion times. To that end, there is a timer for each full World playthrough and a Time Attack mode for individual levels, but without online leaderboards or some in-game reward system this aspect of the game rings a bit hollow.

It doesn’t help that there is no presentational panache here at all, as story and aesthetic ambition are eschewed almost entirely. With little in the visuals to recommend it, no narrative throughline propelling it along, and no exploration or unlockables, Chubbins feels lacking in personality.

That’s something that could have gone a long way in making some of the game’s more clunky and frustrating elements a tad more palatable. As it stands, Chubbins ends up a niche title for those seeking a somewhat unique and demanding platforming experience with no frills.

TalkBack / Smash Bros. Invitational Rules, Participants Unveiled
« on: May 29, 2014, 11:02:00 AM »

Newly revealed details include the tournament character roster and the addition of a secondary Fan Favorite bracket.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37561/smash-bros-invitational-rules-participants-unveiled

Nintendo has finally announced significant details for the E3 Super Smash Bros. Invitational tournament, including the roster of challengers, rules, and more.

A limited selection of only twenty characters will be available for the challengers to pick from. The sixteen tournament participants will draw numbers from a hat to determine the order in which they will choose their fighters, with each character having only one representative player. They will be locked in to play as that same fighter throughout the entirety of the tournament.

The main bracket will follow a single-elimination format, with four-player, four-stock matches played on a five minute time limit. The top two players for each match will advance to the next round. Second place ties can be broken by looking at who has the most kills. If that’s a tie as well, a fan vote will be the determining factor. For the main bracket Quarterfinals, Items will be set to Medium, and they’ll drop the setting down to Low for the Semifinals and Finals.

The Grand Finals will have a setup inspired by the competitive Smash Bros. community, featuring an eight minute long, four-stock one-on-one match with Items turned off, set on the Battlefield stage.

There is also going to be a secondary Fan Favorite bracket, which will be voted on by fans in attendance at the event. Votes will take place after each Quarterfinal and Semifinal match of the main bracket and are supposed to be based on who the audience feels “performed with the most heart, courage, creativity, and style.”

The Fan Favorite bracket will be single-elimination as well, with up to four players per match and a five minute time limit. Two players from each match will advance, one determined by the number of kills and the other by fan vote. Items will be set to medium on all rounds. The Grand Finals of this bracket will be determined strictly by score.

The event will be hosted by Geoff Keighley, with commentators Wynton "Prog" Smith, Bobby "Scar" Scarnewman, and D'Ron "D1" Maingrette calling the action.

The roster of participants is as follows:

  • Lilian "milktea" Chen
  • Hugo "HugS" Gonzalez
  • Ken "LiquidKen" Hoang
  • Daniel "LiquidKDJ" Jung
  • Neha "Lilo" Chhetri
  • Kris "Toph" Aldenderfer
  • Hendrick "DJNintendo" Pilar
  • Sam "PeachyHime" McNaughton
  • Juan "Crs. Hungrybox" Debiedma
  • Kevin "EG PPMD" Nanney
  • Kevin "PewPewU" Toy
  • Dakota "TheRapture" Lasky
  • Cristin "Crismas" DeSaro
  • Masaya "aMSa" Chikamoto
  • McCain "MacD" LaVelle
  • Gonzalo "CT ZeRo" Barrios

The tournament character roster will be limited to the following:

  • Little Mac
  • Zero Suit Samus
  • Wii Fit Trainer
  • Bowser
  • Marth
  • Mega Man
  • Pit
  • Villager
  • Pikachu
  • Mario
  • Link
  • Kirby
  • Samus
  • Rosalina and Luma
  • Sonic
  • Donkey Kong
  • Greninja
  • Pikmin and Olimar
  • Zelda
  • Fox

The Marvelous-developed 3DS game is Harvest Moon in all but name.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37541/new-harvest-moon-game-localized-for-north-america-as-story-of-seasons

Xseed Games is localizing the most recent game in the Bokujo Monogatari (Harvest Moon) series for release this winter in North America. The game came out in Japan earlier this year as Bokujo Monogatari: Tsunagaru Shintenchi (Farm Story: Connect to a New World), but will be simply titled Story of Seasons in its localized form.

The reason for the change in branding is simple: Natsume, the longtime overseas publisher of the Harvest Moon games, has the rights to that name. With this entry being published by Xseed, a subsidiary of series developer Marvelous, a new moniker was required.

Being developed by the same team, it carries on the series’ signature elements and will offer an experience in line with what Harvest Moon fans are used to. Players will customize a character and move them into Oak Tree Town, where they’ll have to tend to the hard work of farm life and relationships.

There will be new elements, of course, including multiplayer and StreetPass components allowing players to tour each other’s farms, cultivate crops together, and exchange gifts. There will also be some decorative items inspired by Nintendo’s Mario franchise.

Story of Seasons will have a presence at E3 2014, so check back then for more information.

TalkBack / Smash Bros. Best Buy Demo Event Detailed
« on: May 27, 2014, 01:35:29 PM »

Smash-Fest brings the masses the same 4-player Wii U demo E3 attendees will play, along with a chance to score a collectible coin.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37525/smash-bros-best-buy-demo-event-detailed

Nintendo has fleshed out its plans to bring fans a slice of E3 by making the Wii U Super Smash Bros. demo available at Best Buy locations across the United States during the week of the Expo.

The event, now known as Super Smash Bros. Smash-Fest @ Best Buy, will feature the exact same Wii U version demo available to E3 attendees, including the option for matches with up to four players.

Fans will get two chances to check out the game that week: Wednesday, June 11, from 4 to 9 p.m. or Saturday, June 14, from noon to 5 p.m. All times are local. Over 100 Best Buy stores will take part in the event, with the list of participating locations available here.

Fans who show up to Smash-Fest will have a chance at some additional perks, as well. The first seventy people at each event to pre-order Super Smash Bros. for either Wii U or 3DS will get a collectible Smash Bros. gold coin, with a maximum of one per customer. Moreover, those who pre-order while there are eligible to receive a $5 Best Buy Rewards Zone certificate when they come in and pick the up the game.

Unlike last year’s Best Buy E3 event, at which a handful of demos were playable, no plans have been announced regarding any other games to be shown at Smash-Fest--not even the 3DS version of the game.

The game comes to the European 3DS Virtual Console 28 years after its Famicom Disk System debut.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37519/the-mysterious-murasame-castle-to-finally-see-western-release

The Mysterious Murasame Castle has been scheduled for a May 29 release on 3DS Virtual Console in Europe. A Nintendo-developed title published in 1986 for the Famicom Disk System, it has previously never been made available outside of Japan.

The game, a contemporary of The Legend of Zelda, is viewed from a top-down perspective, with players navigating environments one screen at a time in a manner similar to that title. However, its gameplay is more linear than Zelda, featuring a time limit and higher emphasis on action. The story revolves around a mysterious force threatening Edo period Japan, and thus prompting a samurai apprentice named Takamaru to battle through a series of four castles to reach the once-peaceful titular castle and rid it of evil.

Nintendo has rarely made reference to The Mysterious Murasame Castle in the 28 years since its release, especially to Western audiences. There have been a few exceptions, most notably the Nintendo Land attraction Takamaru’s Ninja Castle. Takamaru was also a playable character with his own special mode in the Wii version of Samurai Warriors 3 and was seen as a sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Unfortunately for many hoping to get their hands on this long lost curiosity, The Mysterious Murasame Castle has yet to be announced for any new territories other than Europe, though it has been rated by the Australian Classification Board. For more on the game, check out our review of its Japanese 3DS Virtual Console release.

Freshly announced features include crafting ability-augmenting badges. Plus, we get our first look at Impa as a playable character.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37505/first-level-crafting-system-revealed-for-hyrule-warriors

Hyrule Field is the location of the first level of the summer Wii U release Hyrule Warriors, according to a recent press release from Nintendo of America. Additionally, the upgrade systems for weapons and character abilities were detailed.

Today’s news solidified and expanded upon some of the recent info coming from Japanese outlets. The plot focuses on the evil deeds of the Sorceress Cia (Shia in the Japanese version), and there is mention of a kidnapped Zelda and a “disruption in the delicate balance of the Triforce.” Impa was also reconfirmed as a playable character.

In addition to the familiar setting of the first stage, the rest of the game is set to proceed as a “tour de force through the beloved locales of Hyrule,” so expect to see more traditional Zelda environments. Populating these levels are old enemies, such as Bokoblins and Lizalfos, as well as new ones.

As players proceed through the levels to uncover the main storyline, many playable characters with unique weapons and moves will be unlocked. Their weapons and abilities can be upgraded, as well, via collecting Rupees and other items throughout the game. Abilities seem to be upgraded through the crafting of badges, though this process has not yet been detailed.

Hyrule Warriors is due out August 14 in Japan and is currently listed as a summer release in North America and Europe. The game should be playable at E3, so expect more details then.

TalkBack / Sea Green 2DS Hitting June 6
« on: May 23, 2014, 02:15:00 PM »

A jaunty new color lands alongside the release of Tomodachi Life.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37506/sea-green-2ds-hitting-june-6

A new color option will soon be available for Nintendo's 2DS line of systems.

The Sea Green 2DS is scheduled for release on June 6 for a suggested retail price of $129.99. It features a white front and back with Sea Green coloring on the directional pad, face buttons, stylus, and edges.

This is the first widely-available new color option for the hardware since the initial 2DS launch in October of last year. Only black systems accented in Crimson Red and Electric Blue can be found in most North American stores to this point, with the lone exception being the GameStop-exclusive limited edition Peach Pink version. Nintendo recently reported in its annual fiscal results that 2DS sales had reached 2.2 million units worldwide by March 2014.

June 6 is also the release date for Tomodachi Life, Nintendo's upcoming quirky Mii-centric simulation title. Rumors first began circulating regarding this new color when images depicting the Sea Green system were found in the source code of the game's official website.

TalkBack / Nintendo France Rep: Smash Bros. Wii U Uses NFC
« on: May 22, 2014, 04:04:21 PM »

A French interview lends credence to suspicions regarding Nintendo’s NFC plans.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37500/nintendo-france-rep-smash-bros-wii-u-uses-nfc

In an interview with French publication Le Figaro, Nintendo France Managing Director Stephan Bole said that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will use NFC in some capacity.

The interview was fairly wide-ranging, and talk eventually turned to Nintendo’s E3 plans. “E3 is also an opportunity to show the use of NFC technology in Nintendo consoles,” stated Bole. “The NFC will be used in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros.”

Nintendo first revealed plans for an NFC-enabled lined of figurines, called NFP, in this month’s year-end financial results briefing. A more formal introduction for NFP and the first related games or functionality has been promised for E3 2014, when more Super Smash Bros. information is also scheduled to come out.

We have reached out to Nintendo for confirmation and clarification regarding this statement, but for now take it with a grain of salt as no announcement has been made through official channels.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37467/photos-with-mario-3ds-ar-application-now-available-in-the-usa

Photos with Mario, a free application for 3DS that works with a line of Target-exclusive AR cards, is now available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop in the USA.

Players can use this application in conjunction with character-specific AR cards to view and photograph Mario characters in real-world settings. The required cards are sold at Target, accompanied by $10 of eShop credit. Three characters—Mario, Peach, and a Goomba—are available at this time, and they will interact with each other if multiple cards are used simultaneously.

The game has actually been available in Japan since April 2013. Three additional character cards are available there: Koopa Troopa, Luigi, and Bowser. Moreover, Nintendo later released a similar application and cards there based on Animal Crossing. It is unclear whether these additional products may see wider release in the future.

There is currently no word regarding a release for the title in additional territories.

TalkBack / Nintendo to Hold Two Evening Presentations at E3
« on: May 18, 2014, 09:11:00 PM »

One for Smash Bros., and the other a mystery 3DS game.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37459/nintendo-to-hold-two-evening-presentations-at-e3

Nintendo has invited press to two 90-minute evening presentations at E3 this year. The first is set to feature Super Smash Bros., while the other is focusing on a “new game for Nintendo 3DS.”

The Super Smash Bros. presentation will take place Tuesday, June 10, at 7 p.m. PDT, with Smash Bros. mastermind Masahiro Sakurai expected to be on hand. The other event will be held Wednesday, June 11, at 6 p.m. PDT.

Historically, these nighttime E3 sessions from Nintendo have shown potential to be highly intriguing. Some favorite examples include 2006’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl reveal, 2009’s first tidbits regarding the Wii Zelda game that would become Skyward Sword, and 2011’s Pikmin 3 announcement.

So far we know little about what Nintendo is planning to show at E3 in terms of new games, so it’s interesting to hear that they’ll be spending an hour and a half on a new 3DS title of a weight implicitly similar to that of Smash Bros. Feel free to speculate in the comments below as to what this game could be.

My understanding is that the DLC will not be available for download after June 30. If you've already downloaded it, or download it before June 30, you should be able to continue using it...

Several Wii and DS games will be affected.

Electronic Arts-published games whose online components were enabled through GameSpy will lose online functionality on June 30, the company has announced.

“Since GameSpy’s announcement, our teams have been working to evaluate options to keep services up and running,” reads a statement from the company’s corporate blog. “Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time.”

GameSpy announced the May 31 closure of its hosted services back in April. The company’s technology served as key infrastructure for the online capabilities of many titles on both Wii and DS. It was revealed in February that online features for games requiring Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection would cease functioning on May 20.

Fans of the EA titles affected by this scenario will have a bit longer to enjoy their games. The company provided the following list of Wii and DS titles losing functionality at the end of June:

  • Dracula - Undead Awakening
  • FIFA Soccer 08 (KOR)
  • Green Day: Rock Band
  • MySims Party

A new eShop-exclusive game called The Band of Thieves & 1,000 Pokémon will be available in Japan on June 5.

According to information from the Japanese magazine CoroCoro (via Serebii.net), the game is a tie-in to the upcoming Japanese release of the 17th Pokémon movie, subtitled Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction. Its gameplay will involve collecting Pokémon via StreetPass to battle the titular thieves, who are said to be based on the characters Riot and Marilyn from the movie. Victory in these battles will be determined by the number of Pokémon the player has collected.

The Band of Thieves & 1,000 Pokémon will be free to download upon release, but will only be available for a limited time, from June 5 to September 30. At this point Nintendo hasn’t announced the game for Western territories, though a firm release date hasn’t been set for the new movie outside of Japan, either.

The first 3DS system update of the year is good news for forgetful parents.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37418/nintendo-3ds-system-update-available-adds-new-parental-controls-feature

Nintendo has made a new system update available to Nintendo 3DS owners.

Users who upgrade to Version 7.2.0-17U will gain the option to set an email address in the Parental Controls settings. Once this email address is set, a user can later have instructions sent there in case of a forgotten Parental Controls PIN.

As is typical, the update also includes minor adjustments and general improvements to system stability.

The system’s most recent update occurred in December 2013 and brought with it a boatload of enhancements, including Nintendo Network ID support, Miiverse integration, and the removal of the system transfer limit.
