TalkBack / Re: Nintendo France Rep: Smash Bros. Wii U Uses NFC

Therefore, you're complaining about things that aren't even real yet. Where do you draw the line? What is and what may be in the future are two entirely different things so you need to slow your roll, sir.

I think you are being a little hypersensitive to Nintendo criticism.  Nothing has been announced with how they will use this yet, this entire thread is speculation.  Should the thread just announce that SSB will have it and then they lock the thread until the game is out.  Then we can talk about it?

I don't think that's what was said at all.

That's like a couple trying to decide what they want for dinner.

Husband: "I don't want Italian."
Wife: "I don't want Chinese."
Ian: "Well, obviously, this means no one anywhere wants to eat and opening a restaurant anywhere is a bad idea."

I'm not sure I agree with your logic either.  I see this more as the following:

Husband: "I don't want to go out to eat because it costs too much."
Wife: "Well if I'm paying to go out to eat, I want to go to a real restaurant and get the service, not fast food."
Reality: "This is going to increase the costs and make gamers pay for things that either used to be included as unlockables in the game or could be included through cheaper DLC."

This will definitely increase the cost of getting the full gaming experience out of a game.  The question is whether they will make the included content worth it or not.  Ian doubts it will be worth it based on comparable products in the market.  We'll see I guess.

Capcom shouldn't talk about Mega Man unless it's to talk about the release of a new Mega Man game.

Been a while but this thing is finally releasing.

Here is probably the best review so far: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/hyperkin-retron-5-review/1100-6419841/

There do appear to be a few games with some minor errors.  I saw somewhere that you couldn't transfer saves to the Catridge for Zelda/Mario RPG.  There was a game (Pier Solar) that supposedly doesn't play on it.  Some homebrew carts work/others don't.  Supposedly there will be a patch to fix some of these issues in a few days.

Disappointing that they changed the official price to $139.  I pre-ordered from Amazon so I believe I'm locked in at $76.  But I wasn't a prime member then so I have slow shipping.  I don't officially have a delivery date, but I'm hoping to have the system by 6/13.

If that's the way you want to go with this then literally every game ever made and will be made is a system seller. The distinction of "system seller" isn't one anymore since we're reducing it to " a game someone, somewhere buys a console for." Using the more traditional definition of "system seller," Metroid isn't one.

I think that is what makes coming to market with a bunch of games as important as possible because you never know which game is going to push somebody towards a purchase.  I think the whole "system" seller thing is vastly overrated.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games

Only 40 games have ever sold 15M + according to wikipedia.  Would Nintendo like a game that would move 14 million Wii Us?  Heck yeah they would.  But another 14 M Wii Us and we still have a modern day poorly selling console.  Really only Tetris, Wii Sports, Nintendogs, Pokeman and Super Mario Bros are the only definitive system sellers on this list.  The others are debatable.  Games like the Sims/Sims 2, or PC games in general aren't usually system sellers since most people already have PCs.  Wii Sports Resort/GTA 5 were iterative and already sold to the same demographic that already owned the system.  A game like Call of Duty is released on every system so it's likely not a system seller as it's highly unlikely someone who had no interest in gaming before is going to up and buy a system for Call of Duty.

If I do get a wii u I won't ever be selling it, despite my reasons at the time I do kind of regret selling the Wii even if most of that stems from major regret selling my Game Cube before hand.

Lucky for you used Gamecubes run like $15.  That's really an easy error to correct.  Unless you are talking about games too.  Games for the Gamecube do tend to run on the expensive side as people are realizing it was a great system after the fact.

Wii U VC has save state support too.  I would have never beaten Super Ghouls and Ghosts without it.  Plus, there is the ambiguity over whether it will be lost on the next console since there is unlikely to be a Wii mode on the next console.

But the biggest reason for most is the off-screen play.

« on: May 08, 2014, 01:06:25 PM »
I guess I'm surprised a left handed controller (or reverse controller) never came out before.  Seems to me that customization at this point doesn't really have much benefit.  The controller has been standard since the dual shock came out (2 analogs, d-pad, 4 face buttons, shoulder buttons).  I can't really think how taking out an analog and putting 4 new face buttons on the front would help anything.

I'm always shocked that button mapping isn't standard in games though.  Many SNES games had configurable controls and then they just vanished.

C'mon guys, we have to stop comparing WiiU to Wii for sales figures...... PS3 only sold HALF of what PS2 sold.....  The market has changed dramatically.

If Wii U was on pace to sell half what the Wii sold I think everyone would feel pretty good about the system and its future.  The market has changed but not as drastically as people make it out to be because consoles are still selling well.  There may be a point in the not too distance future that console sales fall off a cliff, but we aren't there yet.

PS2 (155M) + Xbox(24M) = 179M  PS3 (80M) + Xbox 360 (80M) = 160M (and there will be several million in sales yet for these consoles).

The biggest change was Sony lost their dominance as the Xbox 360 gained prominence.  Statistically not much of a drop from gen to gen and if Nintendo is added in with the Wii there was a big growth last gen.

@Luigi Dude, it appears most comments are that 3.6M is too high of an estimate, not too low.  I think 3.6M is obtainable with a price drop, software, and no announcement of a replacement (certainly not out of the range of possibility at least like last years projection).  But I wouldn't want to put money on the line that they will hit the 3.6M.

3ds hardware needs a price drop to encourage new sales. It's been two years since a price drop, it's time for another. I feel like Nintendo is reluctant to lower 3ds price because they are losing money on the Wii U but I think the drop needs to happen to get the market excited.

With MK8, SSB, and likely a price drop, I think 3.6 is reasonable for the Wii U. This should be the best sales year for the Wii U though. Lifetime will probably fall in the 14-15 M range.

I think that's precisely why Nintendo goes against the grain. Sony and Microsoft may look great to consumers and third parties, but they're playing a losing hand. Nintendo doesn't believe that business model is sustainable and I'm inclined to agree with them. That bubble is bound to burst. Nintendo's problem is that they have no filter. They don't look at the competition and pick the best parts. Nintendo just decided everything both competitors do is wrong. That's why they end up with things like Friend Codes and a Basic Set with 8 GB of solid state memory. It would be extremely beneficial for them to accept and admit the fact that other companies also have good ideas sometimes.

I get that line of thinking.  Sony/Microsoft aren't exactly raking in $ in the console business even with large sales.  I think the problem is Nintendo's business model is failing and they never address it.  Maybe their competitors model is also failing, but that doesn't absolve Nintendo from the necessary changes they need to make to show value to consumers.

Ipads stream to TV now, they get annual CPU increases, they get better games each year, and it's only a matter of time until apple releases a blutooth controller to work with it.  Amazon is coming out with a $99 stream box that plays game similar to Onlive, Steamboxes are gaining popularity.  The market is quickly becoming saturated with people that view gaming as an add-on and won't be leaving the market due to poor video game sales.  Apple and Amazon are competitors with Nintendo now.  Nintendo hasn't shown to me that they have a plan to operate in a future market with Apple/Amazon or in the current market with Sony/Microsoft.  We can talk competitor failures all day, but that's not going to put Nintendo in a better position.

Maybe the problem lies with people expecting Nintendo's home console to refine online the way the SNES refined 2D controls.

I think the problem lies with people expecting Nintendo to match the online experience of Sony/Microsoft.

And that the 360 is 9 years old, so the 4 GB model is intended for people buying one to play Kinect and watch Netflix (or is the other way around?  :P: : : ).

I think the bigger problem is in the world of 500 GB consoles Nintendo's Deluxe included 32 GB.  With the transition to digital content there should have been a harddrive.

The Gamepad was a risk, but they didn't take the concept far enough to sell the idea entirely.
multiple pad support from the onset, multi-touch, semi-independence(?) & more features.

I think this is key.  Most houses already had a form of tablet.  The Wii U didn't match up to the existing tech leaving consumers  to compare the two techs and ask why should I get a Wii U if I already have a tablet that has better touch controls and a better screen?

And my mind is blown that multiple pad support wasn't there initially.  While Sony/Microsoft have pushed online play, Nintendo had quietly been cornering the market for great multiplayer experience with everybody in one room.  The Gamepad doesn't seem conducive to that.  One player Gamepad all other some other controller provides an uneven experience.  It's cumbersome in that you have to adjust to multiple control schemes to play a single game.  It's also a parent nightmare as kids will fight over which player utilizes the Gamepad.

As far as EA jumping ship...

EA was pretty much jumped ship already.  I think they made Madden for the Wii and that was about it at that point.  EA games have never sold as well on Nintendo consoles as Sony/Microsoft.  EA has been in constant financial pressure to improve.  Cutting Nintendo actually worked out really well with their financial plans.  I just don't see any way the launch Wii U sells more EA games than the mature PS3/Xbox360 market.  I still think the only reason that Wii U got any EA games was because they believed Origin was going to run Wii U online network and by the time they realized it wasn't the games were too far along to just cancel.

Who said anything about dropping the 3DS? I said movie it down into the budget hardware category. It's successor would fill the higher end market need that the Vita is currently hoping to fill.

I just don't get this.  3DS is already budget and Vita is doing terribly because the market that wants high end console games buy a console.  3rd tier just doesn't work in consoles, nobody has run two consoles simultaneously.

and I disagree on the Wii U launching a year sooner. I think that extra year could have made all the difference. It would have launched on the tail end of the faded Wii glory days instead of a full year after the last handful of dirt was thrown on it's grave. It might have reignited a little hype instead of trying to resuscitate a dead horse. That extra year could have made a huge difference, especially if EA was on board and all other 3rd parties that seemed enthusiastic before launch flop.

EA pulled out before sales tanked because of the failed networking deal.  Same thing happens a year earlier, EA is pulling out.  Nintendo is going on it's 3rd straight year of operating loss.  Wii momentum failed three years ago, so you'd have to release 2 years earlier than it came out to try to capitalize on the Wii market.  But I still see the same failure there as people who were interested in motion controls aren't intrigued by the Wii U tablet.

I can't see Nintendo replacing 3DS any time soon. I wouldn't want them to either. We aren't getting Monster Hunter 4 until next year. A 3DS successor around that time next year can kindly get the **** out of my face.

This.

It's a different market now and different times call for different measures. They don't need to release it this year, but announce it at E3, announce the launch date just after the new year and release it in March/April 2015. 3DS would have survived 4 years before being replaced. Some new handheld hardware that is more on the level of Vita, but with some improved Nintendo philosophy towards accounts, online and connectivity could be a really good step in building faith for the eventual announcement of the Wii U successor late next year.

What?  3DS is expected to sell 13.5M units in fiscal 2013 (we'll see where it ends up).  Those are incredible sales and 3DS owns the handheld market.  The 3DS is great for the market.  Nobody is not buying a 3DS because it doesn't have Vita power, the lower cost model fits handhelds.  Nobody is not buying a 3DS because of it's online and connectivity.  Does the Vita do better at those?  No, because nobody is ever online playing that platform.  The 3DS makes money and sells well.  It's just not in need of a replacement yet.

Don't mistake the Wii U pulling Nintendo in a loss position as a reason for changing the market that makes Nintendo money.  Would you be thinking a 3DS needed a replacement if Nintendo was making money?  A new product needs to be driven by the market.  Nintendo dropping the 3DS for a Vita like replacement is not a good model.  When hardware worthy of change needs to happen or demand in the 3DS really drops then Nintendo should replace the 3DS and not before then.

It's the same line of thinking as the Wii U would have been amazing had it come out in 2011, unfortunately it came out in 2012, when much better things were following on it's heels. A 2 year headstart could have made all the difference with PS4/XBO on the horizon.

I don't think a year would have made that much of a difference.  There wasn't many good third party games released in that extra year and third parties would have had to be included in the planning part to get late ports and that game and they wouldn't have been.  Sales wouldn't have been strong upfront and the ports would never come.  I think the difference is we may now be looking at a Wii U replacement as it would have had an extra year that it wouldn't have taken advantage of.  You don't go from having a poor console to having a great console just one year earlier.  I like the Wii U, but it's not much of a jump over PS3/Xbox and it wouldn't have caught much consumer interest if it had come out 1, 2, or 3 years earlier.

The 3ds is still selling really well (I know they lowered projections).  I think it's in need of a price decrease to spur sales and get the 2dsbelow the important $100 point and open a new market for the system and its games. I think it's important to tap this market before a new system is released. I also think they will have a hard time pushing a new system if they try to sell a portable for $200+ this soon after releasing the 3ds. The $169 point seemed to be a price point consumers could get behind but I'd like the 3ds to be cheaper to make a new console at $169 reasonable.

Forget Months.  Nintendo has denied items to Day in front.

I thought Nintendo's always "didn't comment on rumors" which is what they did initially. Then it seemed like they didn't want talk to snowball so they came out and said no so I believe them. QoL is supposedly coming out in 2015, so I'm sure they are at least working on that now. I just don't expect to see any new hardware at E3.

One of the guys who worked on the Remix games has said they could do a SNES Remix or Game Boy Remix if there is enough demand for those, so i'm sure the series will continue.

I'd be really surprised if they don't release an SNES Remix.  This is one of the series that seems to be quick for them to turn out.  But that kind promotion always bothered me.  Buy game x to get get y.  Third parties have been saying that for years and never coming out with game y.  Nintendo has to know demand for a SNES Remix is through the roof so that better be coming before NES Remix version 10 that you have to buy before you get an SNES remix.

I thought lobbies were friend code only chat minimizing risk of a children hearing things they shouldn't. Honestly I'm open to ideas on why it wasnt included, but I can only come up with protecting children. It also seems consistent with other Nintendo decisions to me.

Black ops 2 does in game chat on the Wii U so it is certainly possible. Is your thought Nintendo is lazy or doesn't think it's important?  Among the list of available choices I don't think children is ridiculous.

I guess I'm less concerned about graphics and more concerned about physics/ai. I hadn't heard entirely positive things on those from people who participated in the beta so this kind of fell off my radar.

Maybe if reviews are positive I'll give it a look but not on the wii u. The best way to experience a simulation is with wheels/pedals and Nintendo has no such compatible accessories.

I think Nintendo's philosophy of "making games for everyone" still stands.

I think sometimes they apply it to their own detriment.  I.E. MK8 not having in game chat.  That's pretty much standard for every system.  There concern is obviously kids hearing things they shouldn't hear.  That's a valid concern, but they should have more parental lock features that can remove chat for children rather than strip a feature that a large portion of people would like.  You could make it the default off feature for parents that are too lazy to set up a game, but ultimately if parents decide they don't care if their 8 year old hears all that is going to be said on the internet then there isn't much you can do.  Nintendo can't be a parent for the parent.

I also think making games for everybody may require multiple games to satisfy the demands of all groups.  I.E. Eternal Darkness.  That game was awesome and I'd love to see a sequel but current day Nintendo seems unlikely to try another game similar to that.  Tastes are just too unique nowadays to expect more than a few types of games to really target everybody.  I'd like to see Nintendo say yeah, we have some games that target everybody, but we also want to strive to satisfy people that want games that have more unique demands too.

It was funny, just grabbed your first quote.  I could have grabbed several of your other posts which weren't jokes and clearly blamed one side for this cluster and said we should target them with attacks. Like I said I generally like that you are balanced, but I don't think you've been on this thread.  You haven't been drawn into a back and forth argument about specific points, but you've not added much that is helpful in this thread and your side is clear so it's hard to pretend you are neutral.  If you want this and other threads like it to end,
