TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - March 23, 2023
« on: Today at 04:00:00 AM »

As game developers prepare to confer, we have a serious case of thunder thighs.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63202/nintendo-downloads-march-23-2023

T-7 days until the 3DS and Wii U eShops close; if you were waiting until the last minute to make your purchases it's coming. If you buy eShop codes and still have your Nintendo Network ID linked to your Switch, you can add them to the account here.

Things we missed last week: Namco's sequel Thunder Ceptor II in the Archives, Japan went from 29 games to 56 in one week of shadowdrops.

Although the big one for the week in terms of price is the digital deluxe edition of MLB The Show 23, the big release for my money (until next week) is basically what happens if Chrobin and Lucina get a trilogy. Atelier Ryza 3 drops Friday, and the absolute area is strong with this latest in the line of games that did for alchemy RPGs what Awakening did for Fire Emblem. The other retail-class release of the week is a 7.5 Special for John in Remnant: From The Ashes (via the patron saint of the 7.5, THQ Nordic).

Smaller titles this week include the frequently-pimped Have a Nice Death, Annapurna's literal-choose-your-own-adventure Storyteller, and a game I hear is awfully loud in Monorail Stories. Forever Entertainment is coming up to my area and hiring someone who is NOT related to me in Fishing: North Atlantic, Saint Maker looks like a thriller set in a convent, and... no, Sushi Bar Express is no relation to the Mac-son Park Express, aka the one good Substack. (The fact that it's my close friend and former roommate trying to find gold in the year of crap that was 1995 in the art of pro wrestling is purely coincidental.)

TalkBack / Four Games Added To Nintendo Switch Online Free Libraries
« on: March 15, 2023, 05:33:19 PM »

Let's face it though, you're just here for Kirby.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63159/four-games-added-to-nintendo-switch-online-free-libraries

The basic Nintendo Switch Online libraries have received injections of new games tonight.

Two Game Boy games, alongside a Super Nintendo and an NES game, are now available via Switch Online app updates. The games are, in order of initial release:

  • NES: Xevious (1984/1988): Published by Namco in Japan and Bandai in the west pre-merger, Xevious is an early third party Famicom title that was one of the first great scrolling shooters in its arcade form. Notably, it was one of the first shooters to offer two "planes" of combat with both a standard gun and bombs for ground targets.
  • Game Boy: Burger Time Deluxe (1991): A portable version of the Data East arcade classic dealing with highly unsanitary food preparation.
  • Super Nintendo: Side Pocket (1993): A Data East-published pool game which was remastered from a 1987 NES game.
  • Game Boy: Kirby's Dream Land 2 (1995): The follow-up to the 1992 original (already available on NSO), it marks the debut of Kirby's animal friends Rick, Coo, and Kine - it's also the first game in the Dark Matter trilogy of Kirby games with Dream Land 3 and Kirby 64.

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - March 16, 2023
« on: March 13, 2023, 04:00:00 AM »

Maybe the origins of Bayonetta will keep this week's Nintendo download press release from going into the spam folder.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63146/nintendo-downloads-march-16-2023

T-14 days to eShop shutdown on Wii U and 3DS.

Things we missed last week: Turbo Force (1991 shooter) in the Archives, a canine-focused spinoff of the Metal Max series (Metal Dogs) which, if reviews are to be believed, can only improve on the last main series games, and a new Sherlock Holmes adventure from Frogwares (The Testament of Sherlock Holmes) now that the original ace detective is in the public domain.

So we normally get the press release from Nintendo with the week's releases on Thursday morning at around 9 am ET, but I didn't see it come in at the appointed time. I checked the following day and buried amongst the NFT, VR, blockchain, and metaverse BS that gets filtered was - you guessed it - Frank Stallone the download PR. I found it just as James's editorial on the subject went up, for some extra comedy. I can only assume that the over-SEOed titles certain publishers use for their shovelware tripped it - and Nintendo, I know you're probably not reading this, but y'all need to put the brakes on before we pass every home console's releases prior to the Switch with just games launched since the start of 2021. Which at current pace will be in June.

Anyway, current releases: Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon (now with a demo) is the biggest in terms of cost, though I'm glad I was able to get a head start on the week's biggest time sink: The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure. (Hey, I just happen to have a review right here if you're not convinced.) Also launching is a new Peppa Pig - and not, as might be expected, as a recipe on Saturday Kitchen. Smaller titles this week that might be worth watching: John will have a review of Fur Squadron later this week (like that game was going ANYWHERE else), and also possibly a review of Squad 51 vs The Flying Saucers, rhythm title Backbeat is on my own radar, and there's also Subway Midnight from the surprisingly busy Playism.

The "worst Nintendo published game" would be a race for third because 1 is Urban Champion and 2 is Ice Climber.

Remember kids, always check your trademarks.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63095/latest-inti-creates-release-to-be-renamed-removed-from-north-american-store-pending-change

A game released on February 23 was recently removed from the North American eShop, and it turned out to be due to a name change.

Inti Creates have announced a new name for their action game that released on February 23. Previously known as "Grim Guardians: Demon Purge", it was quickly pulled from the eShop and upon its return in English-speaking countries it will be known as "Gal Guardians: Demon Purge". The reason for the change was due to a trademark complaint from the makers of the tabletop RPG "Grimguard", which also has a mobile version available.

Regardless of the name, Jordan Rudek gave the action title an 8 in his recent review.

TalkBack / The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure (Switch) Review
« on: March 07, 2023, 04:00:00 AM »

“See, I got this friend… Wazy, uh, Hemisphere?” “That’s the worst name I ever heard.”

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/63079/the-legend-of-heroes-trails-to-azure-switch-review

The ever growing “Trails'' series of RPGs from Falcom is about to pick up its fourth Switch entry in North America next week, and it left me in a bit of an uncomfortable position. Due to a combination of factors, I’m two full games behind Trails to Azure if you’re going by Switch release order, and three games behind if you’re going by story chronological order. Is it possible for someone who has a few of the pieces of this monumentally large puzzle to still enjoy this middle game of the series? As it turns out, unquestionably; the core game is still great, and the game supplies those who might be coming in late with enough information to get by.

Azure is the immediate successor to Trails From Zero which launched on Switch last September (here’s Jordan’s review), right down to all of your characters starting at what I understand to be the level cap of 50 from the prior game. A full glossary and story recap is available from first boot, which I made sure to study up before booting into the game. You play once again as Lloyd Bannings, leader of the Special Support Section (SSS) of the police department of the city-state of Crossbell; although the group is usually charged with minor tasks such as pet rescue, they were last seen defeating an apocalyptic cult. Lloyd and his colleagues from Zero - Elle, Randy, and Tico - are joined by two new members in regular-force member Noel and former gang leader / host (in the Japanese “club you might run in a Like a Dragon game” sense) / possible ninja Wazy Hemisphere. And yes, that name sounds as stupid said out loud as it does in text form; at least if I’m playing Earthbound I can rename “Poo”. Stupid nomenclature aside, the SSS has to deal with the fallout of the events from Zero both within the city and from the surrounding regions including a republic and an empire who both have it out for the city in between.

I just wanted to prove that I was not, in fact, making that up.

The mission structure for Azure is after the tutorial power tease, the SSS is given a few tasks to complete which can be battles, fetch quests, or chasing felines all over the city. After a couple of days of completed quests, the main plot will kick in to end a chapter. There are four chapters in all plus a few interstitial segments - a quick run with minimal side material would probably run about 40-45 hours, but there are plenty of options for distraction. There’s fish to catch, cooking recipes to find, or just falling into the optional “Pom-Pom” competitive puzzle game that unlocks early on and is essentially Puyo Puyo with the serial numbers filed off. The ending can also be affected by “bond points” earned with various party members during the course of the story. It’s worth diving into every treasure chest you can find, as checking them after getting the item pops up a quip that ranges from funny to confusing to touching.

Fighter's Pass 2 looks a lot better if they ended on Lloyd or Rean from Cold Steel for the RPG protagonist.

Trails to Azure’s battle system is a turn-based affair based on simple menus, viewed from a slightly angled overhead perspective. The characters can move around the area, attack, use items, or use either “arts” or “crafts”, each with their own point meter. The arts are roughly equivalent to magic spells in other RPGs, and can be equipped on multiple characters while the “crafts” are character specific and build time each time the character acts or is attacked. An essential super move can be used upon the craft point gauge hitting 100, but holding out for 200 will cause the move to become more powerful (more damage, a wider area of effect, or in the case of a damage blocking shield a second total block). Because of the additional party members, up to two characters (three if a guest character is traveling with the party) have to sit out, though they can occasionally jump in with an attack or buff the active party; these “reserve” characters also get full experience. The turn order is displayed along the left side of the screen and also indicates which buffs can be granted to the attacker; these usually come in the form of health/art/craft point recovery, but can also include options for additional turns (“rush”) or even the auto-win of a “Team Rush”.Since the enemy can also receive the health buffs or rush benefits, it can become necessary to use techniques to delay the opponent’s action to minimize their positive benefits if outright killing the enemy isn’t an option. It’s a familiar, yet fun, battle system that provides additional experience multipliers for certain battle achievements.

The character builds do offer a lot of customization options, but are simple to navigate. Each character equips an accessory that provides some buffs, then gems can be either purchased or synthesized in order to build out the skill sets. Every character aside from Lloyd has a “reserved slot” for one of the game’s seven elements, but aside from that it’s open season for building. Some of the side quests provide essentially dual techniques, where two people with 100 craft points can spend them for an ultra-powerful attack. Certain experience milestones also enhance or modify the craft super moves. And there are plenty of options if you find a build just isn’t working, since the game offers more save slots that any game I’ve ever played at 200.

Azure being an older game - it debuted on the PC in 2011, though the Switch version is adapted from the PlayStation Vita - means it runs smoothly on the Switch, with only brief battle effect slowdown for particularly flashy super moves. Every character stands out in the overworld even with a somewhat shrunken art style, while important characters have impressive character portraits that do adapt to the environment. (This is mostly reserved for a beach episode.) Crossbell and its surrounding county does have a bit of environmental variety, and the addition of a car to the SSS’s tools makes fast travel very easy. Like its immediate predecessor Azure only offers Japanese voice acting - somewhat disappointingly - but it’s still well acted, while the soundtrack has some particularly striking tracks and even offers the Splatoon 3 “show what track is playing” option down to which disc and track number on the official soundtrack is playing. Now if only it were easy to get those soundtracks legally.

I'm pretty sure that name dates back to Trails in the Sky because if not, I have questions.

It might be tempting to skip Trails to Azure, but even set apart from the exceedingly large franchise it’s still another great RPG for the Switch. I’m looking forward to possibly replaying it with more knowledge of the events and try to take on more of the side content, since I had to take a hard critical path to get the review done. If I don’t decide to fill in some of those Trails story gaps this spring….

Despite Dead Cells, Engage, Fusion, and Mario Kart - there are games coming out alongside the DLC this week.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63049/nintendo-downloads-march-9-2023

Things we missed last week: Sky Kid DX was the Archives game, and the stupidest idea of the week - which actually requires a toilet roll if the description means anything - is Give Me Toilet Paper!

Despite all of the news of the week seemingly focusing on DLC (Dead Cells + Castlevania, Chrobin + Veronica, Metroid Fusion, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe wave 4) there's a fair few games coming out this week as well. And a lot of it has been featured before; we have Fatal Frame/Project Zero bringing the fourth game to North America for the first time, Session: Skate Sim bringing something to fill the gap of #Skate4, that Square Enix game from the last Nintendo Direct's Japanese airing (Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo), and Ib from September's Direct. If you prefer Indie World veterans, you get Figment 2: Creed Valley, Oni: Road to the Mightiest Oni, and a game Nintendo's indie socials have promoted with The Last Spell.

Other titles from not-presentations include Little Witch Nobeta (Idea Factory action RPG), Mato Anomalies, and... *sigh* Record of Agarest War. And it seems like we're coming in and going out like a lion, as we get the other infamous fanservice SRPG, Mugen Souls, on the 27th.

TalkBack / Square Enix To Hire New President At Next Board Meeting
« on: March 03, 2023, 04:19:37 AM »

The old one was last seen doing a fair President Shinra impression.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63030/square-enix-to-hire-new-president-at-next-board-meeting

There's about to be a change at the top of Square Enix.

The board of the company has announced a vote to install Takashi Kiryu as the company's president at the next meeting of shareholders, replacing Yosuke Matsuda. The meeting is scheduled for early May.

Kiryu was previously Square's director of corporate communications and strategy, as well as business relations. In recent months, Matsuda has come under fire for aggressively pursuing the addition of the controversial non-fungible token (NFT) technology to games, including it in two separate letters from the president although no public plans ever emerged.

They weren't updating the games, so... down they go.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63029/splatoon-mario-kart-8-wii-u-servers-offline-due-to-security-fixes

The main Wii U games affected by the security vulnerability disclosed in December have been taken offline, either for fixes or removal of the attack vector entirely.

Nintendo's network status page has updated with the below note for the 2014 and 2015 releases:

We have identified vulnerabilities with online play for this network service and have begun temporary emergency maintenance. We expect an extended maintenance duration while we address these issues and have not determined when online play will resume. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.

An error 106-8011 would appear if trying to play the affected games online.

The ENBufferPwn exploit is a critical vulnerability that affected Nintendo online games dating back to 2011's Mario Kart 7: it could be used for a full takeover of the console including possibly activating the cameras and audio recording functions of the Wii U GamePad and the 3DS. The affected Switch games and the aforementioned Mario Kart 7 were updated to fix the game at the application level.

TalkBack / Third Wave Of Fire Emblem Engage DLC To Launch Next Week
« on: March 02, 2023, 03:37:55 PM »

For the record, your News Editor is an unrepentant Chrobin shipper. "Which one?" Yes.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63028/third-wave-of-fire-emblem-engage-dlc-to-launch-next-week

Nintendo is apparently determined to get as much content out next week as possible, if a recent announcement from their home Twitter is any indication.

The Japanese-language account has announced that the third wave of Fire Emblem Engage's expansion content will be available on March 8 - this will likely be late in the day on the 7th for North America. As announced in last month's Nintendo Direct, this is the wave that will add the third wave of special Emblem bracelets including Fire Emblem Awakening protagonists Chrom and Robin (male version) as well as Veronica from Fire Emblem Heroes to the game.

It is not known if any other bonuses will be included; the prior two waves have added extra money as well as stat boosting and skill-inheritance enabling items among others.

The gang's... almost... all here.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63027/metroid-fusion-launching-into-game-boy-advance-expansion-pack-library-march-8

Last month's six game drop of Game Boy Advance games for subscribers to the Switch Online expansion pack is about to become a lucky seven.

Nintendo have confirmed that Metroid Fusion will be the first game to be added of the announced Game Boy Advance games, and it will be available March 8. The 2002 sidescroller was the last original 2D Metroid for nearly two decades when it launched alongside Metroid Prime in 2002.

At this point, only the remakes of the original two Metroids (Zero Mission and Samus Returns) are missing from the Switch having a complete set of 2D Metroid.

TalkBack / Cinematic Platformer Lunark To Land In eShop March 30
« on: March 02, 2023, 09:10:07 AM »

...surprising Flashback never came out on the Game Boy Color, but this may be the next best thing.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63024/cinematic-platformer-lunark-to-land-in-eshop-march-30

The end of March will see a unique take on the cinematic platformer hit the eShop.

Lunark, a previously Kickstarted game that began as mockups of a Game Boy Color version of the classic Flashback, was confirmed for launch on March 30. Details on the game were given in a developer video posted on GameXplain.

WayForward will be publishing the game as announced at the last Limited Run Games presentation, where a physical release was also confirmed - though no date has been announced for the preorders.

You don't need the Persona 5 or Phoenix Wright police when there's a paper trail.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63023/yuji-naka-pleads-guilty-in-square-enix-insider-trading-probe

Yuji Naka has pled guilty in his insider trading case.

The 57-year old veteran of Sega admitted during a hearing today "There is no doubt that I knew the facts about the game before it was made public and bought the stock", referring to the co-developers of the mobile games Dragon Quest Tact (Aiming) and the now-shuttered Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier (Ateam). The purchases were made in early 2020 when Naka was heading the ill-fated Balan Wonderworld at Square Enix.

A date for sentencing has not been announced. With the guilty plea, Japan's Financial Instruments and Exchange Act offers maximum penalties of a fine of JPY5,000,000 (roughly US$36,500 at press-time market rates) or up to five years in prison.

No games, but some new low prices on catalogue ones.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63022/nintendo-unveils-promotions-for-mar10-day-including-new-system-bundle

The day of the plumber is next Friday and Nintendo of America is going all out for it.

March 10 (MAR10) will be headlined by the launch of a new Switch bundle - standard screen - for US$299.99 that includes one of the "choose your game" options; the selectable games are Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, or New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. The system will also come with two red Joy-Cons and stickers for the now-launching April 5 Super Mario Bros movie.

A three-pronged sale will also be a part of the festivities; from March 5 - 11 select retailers will be offering US$20 off games including MK8 Deluxe, Odyssey, NSMBU Deluxe, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, and Mario Party Superstars "and many more". The digital component will come in two parts, the first beginning on the 10th and including Superstars as well as the related games Yoshi's Crafted World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and Luigi's Mansion 3 on sale until the 23rd. The second digital sale begins on March 24 and includes MK8 Deluxe, Super Mario Maker 2, Odyssey, and 3D World + Bowser's Fury with the deals running to April 7.

The Mario Kart 8 Booster Course Pass Wave 4 is part of the festivities, as well as an in-store event at GameStop from noon - 4 pm local time on Saturday, March 11 with exclusive swag.

17

"Why then did they change the name?" "People liked it better that way."

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63021/fourth-wave-of-mario-kart-8-deluxe-booster-course-pass-takes-green-flag-march-9

The fourth wave of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe expansion pass is dropping just in time for Mario Day.

Wave 4, which adds Birdo as a character as well as eight more courses, will be available on March 9. The eight new courses are:

  • Super Circuit Riverside Parkway
  • Double Dash Waluigi Stadium
  • DS Mario Circuit
  • Wii DK Summit
  • Tour Bangkok, Singapore, and Amsterdam
  • The new Yoshi's Island course

The trailer also confirms that Birdo will have multiple selectable color options.

The three sweetest words in a Nintendo presentation are “Available later today”, and these ones were especially rich.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/63011/ranking-the-switchs-greatest-shadowdrops-aside-from-metroid-prime-remastered

The Switch turns six this Friday, and that means both that we’re all old and that there’s a lot of memorable moments worth looking back on. In this case, we’re looking back at some of the greatest Switch surprise launches in the entire history of the platform.

After assembling a list of every Switch surprise presentation release from the first occurrence in June 2018 - all the surprise releases in 2017 were for 3DS - through the Direct on February 8, we narrowed down the list to one that was guaranteed to be the bottom of the top and nine others. After that, a panel consisting of our staff and Patrons ranked the remaining 1 to 9 to determine the rest of the top 10.

The following restrictions were in place for the list:

  1. No demos, or the final list would’ve had at least three HD-2D demos on it.
  2. No drops of DLC. The main thing this excluded was Doom Eternal’s “Ancient Gods” expansion, as well as NSO library updates (Earthbounds, Super Mario All-Stars, the GB/GBC/GBA libraries).
  3. No Metroid Prime Remastered. It’s been reviewed six times on this website - three on the original release, twice on Trilogy, and the remaster - with five 10s and a 9.5. It was our Game of the Decade in the 2000s, and voted the best game of the first 15 years of the website in 2014. If we’re doing the Bill Simmons Semi-Memorial Pyramid of surprise releases, then Metroid Prime Remastered is the apex and we’re ranking level 2.

So with that in mind, let’s run down the top 10…

TalkBack / Pokemon Sleep Awakens As Part Of Pokemon Day Announcements
« on: February 27, 2023, 04:47:01 AM »

Along with everything else from the Pokemon Presents.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63015/pokemon-sleep-awakens-as-part-of-pokemon-day-announcements

Other announcements from today's Pokemon Presents:

  • Pokemon Sleep, originally announced in 2019, was re-revealed today and is targeting a July launch. The app will track sleep in different modes, with Pokemon displaying different sleep methods; it will be compatible with a new version of the Pokemon Go Plus accessory that will rest on the pillow of the user in lieu of their smartphone.
  • Pokemon Home will be updated in "early 2023" for Scarlet and Violet support; players will be able to transfer received postcards from Pokemon Go into the game for special encounters of the Pokemon Vivillon, while the senders of the postcards will receive opportunities to catch the coin form of Gimmighoul.
  • A new stop-motion animated series produced in conjunction with Netflix, "The Pokemon Concierge" was announced though no release window was given.
  • Classic versions of the Pokemon Trading Card Game will be released in a premium format; more details will be given on these at this summer's Pokemon World Championships (August 11 - 13)
  • Pokemon Unite has added the box mascot of Pokemon Sword, Zacian, as a playable character.
  • Pokemon Cafe Remix will offer the option to "hire" the starters of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet later today.
  • Pokemon Masters EX is adding new versions of the rivals of Pokemon Sword and Shield - each one representing a different Galarian legendary bird (Bede/Articuno, Hop/Zapdos, Marnie/Moltres).

20

And your reward is clothes and a unique type combo.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63014/pokemon-scarlet-and-violet-introduces-new-expansion-pass-and-paradox-pokemon

The expansion pass for Scarlet and Violet is going to include a trip and a new exchange program.

Announced as part of the Pokemon Presents presentation, "The Secret Treasure of Area Zero" is an expansion pass for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet that will be available for pre-purchase later today. The first part "The Teal Mask" will launch in the fall and the second, "The Indigo Disk" will follow in winter; part 1 is portrayed as a school trip while the second is intended to be the character participating in an exchange program with "Blueberry Academy".

Purchasing the pass early will include new clothing for the main character, and if purchased by October 31, 2023 will provide a one-time code to use a special Hisuian Zoroak in the game.

The next raid event for the base game introduced two new Paradox Pokemon - "Walking Wake" is an ancient Water/Dragon type exclusive to Scarlet, while "Iron Leaves" is a Grass/Psychic type exclusive to Violet. They will be available in raids starting today, which will require the version 1.2 update as the data for these new Pokemon was not in previous versions of the game.

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - March 2, 2023
« on: February 27, 2023, 03:00:00 AM »

How ironic that on the week of the Switch's birthday, it's getting the omae wa do shindeiru treatment. (NANI????)

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/63010/nintendo-downloads-march-2-2023

Things we missed last week: Taito's Don Doko Don was the ACA release.

It's the Switch's birthday this week, and surprisingly there isn't a first party game on the list unless you count the Fitness Boxing series. But even the new entry, Fitness Boxing: Fist of the North Star, is self-published by Imagineer. Also, I love how this series has gone from some of the OG kusoge to a musou, then it got the Yakuza / Like a Dragon treatment, and now it's going into fitness games. Other major releases this week include Void Terrarium 2 - as per policy, we don't record the actual name in the database after the Bobby Tables incident - and an indie release that might actually justify a reference to "Triple I" in A Fox and His Robot.

Titles on the smaller side I'm watching include the long-awaited Brok the InvestiGator and The Pillars of the Earth - whose story was apparently written by an award-winning British author. Hey, it worked for Elden Ring, didn't it?

TalkBack / Nintendo Confirms Withdrawal From E3 2023
« on: February 24, 2023, 07:44:00 AM »

They're actually skipping it, not just "not doing a live dog and pony show" like a decade ago.

Nintendo has officially confirmed news rumored at the end of January: it will not have a presence at the revived E3 expo.

In a statement to VentureBeat, Nintendo said "We approach our involvement in any event on a case-by-case basis and are always considering various ways to engage with our fans. Since this year’s E3 show didn’t fit into our plans, we have made the decision to not participate" before reiterating their support for the show and its original organizer, the Electronic Software Association (ESA).

E3 2023 was to be the first event organized by ReedPop (who run the PAX expos) following three years of no in-person events due to various permutations of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Nintendo was the only console manufacturer to be on the show floor proper at the last in-person, ESA-organized event in 2019, with Microsoft holding their booth at the Microsoft Theater near the Los Angeles Convention Center and Sony skipping the show entirely.

The lack of an E3 does not preclude Nintendo having a Nintendo Direct presentation in June to set up the second half of 2023, as there are no confirmed launch dates for first party Switch software following the launch of Pikmin 4 on July 21.

TalkBack / Seventh Lair (Switch) Review
« on: February 22, 2023, 12:21:00 PM »

It’s nothing like its predecessor; it’s short and doesn’t end well. (Content warning: Contains discussion of suicide.)

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/62961/seventh-lair-switch-review

It all began with a single quote from Joe DeVader on our site Slack channel:

“"Fata Morgana devs release spinoff where they reuse characters and assets to tell a story about an indie dev and his fans getting isekai'd into his fantasy game" was not on my bingo card”

This concept sounded absolutely ridiculous, but given my feelings about The House in Fata Morgana I had to take the risk and bought Seventh Lair. A few hours later, I was left in tears, reaching for the antidepressants I was using to get through Persona 3 Portable, and wondering just how to get my thoughts down on paper for this game.

You best believe in isekai, monsieur... you're in one.

As Joe so blithely put it, Seventh Lair flagrantly reuses the character models and backgrounds from Fata Morgana for a brand new story. This is mentioned on the game’s eShop page and the FM characters are literally credited by name in the credits, so they’re honest with it. The “You” character is portraying a Paris-based game developer with the hacker alias Dark†Knight, who has created some small indie releases on his own website “Royaume Heaven*”. After a bit of creator’s block, he announces a new release for April Fools’ Day, but as the game goes live he falls unconscious and wakes up in a clearly-Dragon Quest-inspired JRPG as the hero character. Regular members of his site’s forums start appearing as other party members and even - in one instance - NPCs, and the party must work their way to the end of the game using only Dark†Knight’s memories of the planning notes for the game. After some sequence breaking that would make a Super Metroid speedrunner blush, the endgame reveals the reason for the characters being brought to the fantasy world to begin with, which involves discussions of suicide (among other things) that left me incredibly shaken.

Unlike its predecessor, Seventh Lair is a brief adventure; I was able to get through it in a handful of hours. There aren’t any choices in the story, and aside from a brief post-credits “short story”, what you get in the main plot is it. Unfortunately, the editing of the story itself is a bit rough, as there were more typos / missed words in this brief adventure than were in the entirety of Fata Morgana. I might have been tempted to blame the publisher especially since it was their maiden effort on Switch, but MangaGamer did publish the original English release of Fata Morgana that the console releases (published by Limited Run Games or its predecessor) were based on. Hopefully the text will be cleaned up later on.

Given the open asset reuse, they did a good job adapting the characters and environments to a “fantasy RPG” world. There’s even a reason why the main character has incredibly long hair in-universe, which was a bit of attention to detail that I appreciated. The soundtrack retains a propensity for haunting melodies, with the songs “One Cut Deeper”, “Land of Nowhere”, and especially “The Voice of Fairy” being standouts. (The last of those is actually used as a part of the plot, as well.)

I don’t regret taking a few hours to read Seventh Lair, though I did need several minutes to collect myself at the end of the tale. With some cleaned up text, it could be an all-time great visual novella - but for now, it’s a solid one with some things worth discussing.
