If all he said in the original Japanese was "new Mario game", then how do we know he wasn't just talking about the new Paper Mario? This may not actually be a confirmation of a new game at all.

Maybe, but I think they would have just said that. Miyamoto's wording seems to indicate to me that it's a game they haven't announced yet.

Well, the whole article was about Super Mario Bros. and its follow-ups.  Miyamoto probably doesn't play a huge role in the development of Paper Mario.

What exactly has been revealed about this "Paper Mario" game? I haven't really been following it... I know by the screen shots that it's clearly not a port of the N64 original, but is it the 3rd 'Paper Mario' RPG? Or is it a 2nd 'Super Paper Mario' platformer? Has it even been revealed? Does anyone know? If it's a 'Super Paper Mario'-type game, which is more based off of SMB, it certainly could relate as being a followup.
