I'm eating foreign candy/snacks/food/beverages
« on: January 19, 2014, 11:22:24 PM »
So I stopped by my local Cost Plus World Market and decided to try a few of these imported candybars. I think they are supposed to have this 'vastly superior' European chocolate. Here is what I got:

Yorkie

This is a pure chocolate bar, segmented into chunks. It's not bad, but Chocolate tastes a little cheap and a little too sweet.

Lion Bar

This was pretty good! The cookie thing in the bottom was interesting and the caramel was thicker like a Rolo instead of a typical candy bar. I would like to find the Peanut version.

Aero

This was weird, but in a good way. The bubbly texture makes it very light, but it seemed more crumbly than smooth when eating. Maybe it wasn't fresh enough?

That last one is imported? I could have sworn I've seen that in American stores (not world markets).

I don't know about the Aero, but Hershey's makes an "Air Delight" (both in bar and Kiss form)...

Aero bars are great! I get a Canadian lady friend of mine to bring back a bunch (along with Coffee Crisp bars) when she goes to visit her family during the summer. Smarties are also quite excellent.

Both Yorkie and Aero are commonplace here.

Aero has a lot of different flavours like orange, mint, white chocolate and a few random "limited edition" ones.

Yeah we have Aeros in Australia too, but when travelling overseas I've noticed our chocolate tastes a little different to European and Asian chocolate (Sorry Americas, I haven't visited you yet.) Now I'm not sure if this is true, but I was told that the flavour difference is due to an additive or a recipe difference that is in all our chocolate that sort of stops it from melting so easily in our summers.

Doesn't work so well though we had a heat wave last week and I went to buy a Snickers from the supermarket and within minutes of leaving the airconditioned building I ended up with a sticky, nutty mess on my hands.

Aero as a foreign candy seems so bizarre to a Canadian like myself.  A popular pack of Halloween candy around here contains fun-size Kit Kat, Aero, Smarties and Coffee Crisp.  It's funny to think that Kit Kat is the only one of those in the United States.  Coffee Crisp in particular is one of my favourite chocolate bars and it would be weird to live in a country without it.  Another favourite of mine is the similarly named Crispy Crunch, which is kind of like a Butterfinger.

Of course when I'm in the States I have to get myself a Whatchamacallit.  Another one I love is Reese's Fast Break which used to exist in Canada as the Sidekick.  I was pretty miffed when they discontinued that one.

One foreign chocolate bar I had once was Double Decker which was pretty damn good.  Some dollar store in my area had gotten some in and after my initial purchase I pretty much bought the rest of their stock - which was only like eight more bars.  They went fast.

American chocolate was made differently at the time. The process resulted in high levels of acid in the chocolate. This is why "European" chocolate taste sweet compared to American chocolate. Today the process is duplicated simply but adding the appropriate acid instead of spoiling the chocolate.

Flakes are sticks of chocolate that are thin and flakey and break off easily. Hence the name.
Munchies, if i remember, are chewy-chocolate covered biscuits.

My favourite one is in the bottom right in the first picture, just out of shot, called Toffee Crisp.

We call the American Smarties "Rockets".

The chocolate Smarties used to be great but a few years ago they changed the die they use to colour them to something more natural.  The problem is the new die has a slightly fruity flavour to it which has altered the taste.  As a result I think they're pretty meh now and only eat them if someone brings their leftover Halloween candy to work.  I used to go for either one but now M&M's is the only one I'll intentionally buy.  It sucks because as a kid I was all over Smarties.  I remember when they introduced the blue colour!  There was serious discussion on the playground over whether you eat the red ones last or the new blue ones.

I hate how candy makers (and food makers in general) change their recipe in the name of 'health'. It's candy! It is meant to be junk. Let it be as tasty and gloriously unhealthy as possible. I apologize for my country's part in this misguided health craze. It is ruining everything from candy to fast food to chips.

It is my choice what I put in my body and I hate that some pen pushers at a desk in an office are forcing food companies to change their recipes to something less tasty. If I want to eat healthy I will eat healthy choices. If I want to treat myself to tasty indulgences then I want them to be delicious indulgences.

When I went with my wife to Guatemala earlier this year I thought most of the candy tastes better. We ended up bringing a bunch back with us. Even the soda tastes better, probably because they aren't afraid to use real sugar in their goodies.

I really want to try french fries fried in beef lard. I always hear stories of people who got to eat the old McDonalds fries when they fried them in real cooking oil. None of this silly nauseating soy and 'vegetable' oil.

You know soda in Canada uses real sugar.  I remember hearing that it was illegal to use corn syrup as a substitute but then it might be as simple as the US subsidizing corn and Canada not, making sugar the cheaper option.  I like our McDonald's fries better, too.  They have not noticeably changed during my entire life but the American fries noticeably got worse at some point.  It could be possible that they've always been different and I just didn't notice.  As a kid I was rarely in the States and rarely got to eat fast food so I probably only ate at American McDonalds a handful of times.

Except Super Size Me is a sham. I highly advise watching the movie Fat Head which refutes a lot of the ideas that are shown in Super Size Me. Changed my diet and my health drastically. Don't want to derail this candy thread with that, though. So anyone curious can start a new thread or PM me about that stuff.

As for candy, I would like to try foreign peanut butter candy like Reeses. I ate some here recently and it tastes very different from what I remember. I used to love them and now I find them to be nasty.

Why can't they just go to a different restaurant?  There are all sorts of restaurants that serve food I don't like and I've never thought about making any sort of fuss about it.  I understand that for a vegetarian there might be moral issues involved in accidently consuming meat product but I think my response would be "**** you, Mcdonald's!  I'll never eat here again!" not "Change your food to accommodate me, someone who already has no interest in 90% of your menu, and compromise the experience for the majority of your customers."  Same with health nuts.  You have no inalienable right to eat at McDonald's.  They serve a certain type of food and you can choose to eat it or go somewhere else.  I don't go into health food stores and demand they provide me Mars bars and Doritos.

Thats what is most bothersome about it. No one should force their views on others. I try to avoid wheat/gluten and soy (diet choice and wife's health condition). I don't go into McDonalds or The Old Spaghetti Factory and pitch a fit because they sell something I choose to not eat. I still work part time at Pizza Hut and they fry their wings in soy now. I don't tell that employer that they can't sell that product because I can't/won't eat it.

Really, I'm surprised that a vegetarian fast-food company hasn't cropped up nationally. That is what should be happening. Don't attack the restaurants that found a market and are successfully meeting the needs of their clientele. Find those that are meeting your needs and support them with your dollars.

I think the complaining was mostly due to them not making it clear that's how they did it, and some vegetarians had been under the impression that the fries were an option for them. If I were morally opposed to something and then found out I'd been doing it inadvertently all this time I think it's understandable to be upset. If you want to be upset with someone, be upset with the restaurant, who didn't have to change anything if it didn't want to.

That is a good point. The restaurant didn't need to change. Though I also blame consumers for not being educated in their food choices. Read labels, ask questions. I actually went into the storage freezer where dough is stored at Pizza Hut and read the labels on the boxes for inquiring customers concerned about certain food items. Thankfully they are like regular USDA nutrition labels where they show ingredients and also bolded common allergens like wheat, eggs, milk and soy. I've done the same mistake myself because I didn't bother reading a label until AFTER I ate the food.

So seems like plenty of blame can go around to all parties involved.

So, this showed up at my door today.

At first I was like "Oh... gummies."  I mean, I like gummies and all, but we have gummies here in the states.  This same brand even (Haribo, not Jolly Jungle, as far as I've ever seen).  I was a bit sad.  But then, I looked at the ingredients.  Elderberries, Hibiscus, Passion Fruit... Spinach!  Weird.

Can't wait to try these. :D

The first person from outside the US to PM me their address *after* 8:42 AM GMT will get some US-exclusive (as best as I can tell) goodie sent to them. :D

Thankfully, these are made with sugar (and real sugar, by the ingredients listing - not even HFCS!), so I don't think I'll have that problem.

Although, imagine this made with the fake stuff. :D

I've bought those gummies all the time, in fact i have a pack sitting here next to me.

I sent those because several friends of mine in the USA all said they've never heard of haribo - so i assumed they weren't there and sent those.

Next time i'll send something that is UK specific in a couple weeks.

No, no, they're great!  The only Haribo stuff I've seen are gummy bears and tiny cola bottles.  I haven't broken these open yet (want to share them with my wife so that if you've poisoned them, we can die together like Romeo and Juliet) but the mixture of flavors in them sound very unique. :D

Okay, so I made another trip to the store for another trio of candy bars.

Violet Crumble

What the heck was this? The candy is neither violet nor crumble. Talk amongst yourselves Large chocolate covered... hard foam? Seriously, the foam is very hard and dry. It reminds me of the foam caulking you use to fill in the cracks for insulation. I think it was honey flavored, not sure, It got better as I ate more, not sure if I would go out of my way to eat another.

Duplo Ganze Nuss

This is be Ferrero, the company that makes Ferrero Roche, which my Dad always buys for the holidays. This tastes very similar to them. The hazelnut is larger and the cream larger in quantity and it may have some chocolate. It was my favorite from the selection today.

Coffee Crisp

I don't drink coffee, but this was still pretty good. Chocolate around wafers and a coffee flavored cream. I can see why it's popular. I'm surprised Nestle doesn't sell them in America.

BUMP

Couple more candy selections, this time from the Asian market.

White Rabbit Creamy Candy

Okay, this one is kind of like a Tootsie Roll in shape, but instead of chocolate it tastes like milk. Have you ever had those weird Cow Tales candies? A bit like that. The really weird part though is each piece of candy is wrapped in a thin rice paper, which flakes out when you bite in. All in all, not bad.

Crown Strawberry :confused; ?

This one I couldn't find the full name for and didn't find any pictures online. It is a chewy candy, like a Starburst but tougher. What interesting is instead of an artificial strawberry flavor it tastes much more like a really strawberry and is much more tart.

PROTIP: combine both candies in mouth for delicious 'berries and cream taste!

So this isn't technically candy, but it is definitely fast food. From our neighbors to the south, I present: Gansito. Some member of the Disney Duck family is apparently the mascot.

This is a bit like a twinkie, except white and more cakey, less sponge cakey. Well, a chocolate covered twinkie. As you can see, the added some raspberry jelly in as well. Plus, the white cream was coconut flavored. and chocolate sprinkles on top.

All in all, pretty good. They really jammed a lot in there and it works.

EDIT: I forgot to mention where this is from! It's from Mexico.

Korean snacks are pretty nice.  They have this nice chewy sweet and spicy Jelly Candy.  They don't call it Gummy because that is the Korean word for Spider.

I get Foreign candy here all the time.  Snickers, M&Ms, Belgium chocolates.  Ha.

It's tamarind with pico-de gallo on it or something? It's a spicy sweet candy on a plastic spoon.

A friend gave me some Pudding-flavoured KitKats

You are supposed to cook these in a toaster oven for a few minutes. They are supposed to brown and caramelize on top like a crème brulée. I was just going to eat it normally because *effort*, but I figured I should give it a try. Before cooking they look like white chocolate kitkats. They smelled super sweet and sugary.

I don’t have a toaster oven, and using a full sized oven for a tiny, snack-sized chocolate bar seemed wasteful. I decided to try using the microwave.

I kind of figured a microwave wouldn’t be a good idea, but gave it a go always. And as you can see, even on low intermittent settings, the sugary chocolate quickly became molten and burnt (a bit hard to tell since the plate itself is black).

Yummy!

You bet I still tried it. Surprisingly, the wafers inside were still crispy. You get the crispiness of the wafer along with the crunch of the 'caramelized' sugar, and the soft chocolate. It didn't taste too bad even with the burnt sugar. It was pretty sweet, so it's probably good that its only snack-sized. I have 1 more bar, so I may attempt to cook it in the oven next time I’m making something!

Just today!

HEY GUYS I'M EATING FOREIGN CANDY

This came in the mail today. I think it means the Queen sent me a package!

I believe this is a member of the Jelly Baby family. Rowntree's Randoms. The interesting thing is they really are random. Different styles of gummies; pillowy, cream bottomed, traditional. Lot's of different shapes and flavors too.

Also the sweet and sour version. I bet they take like Chinese Chicken!

They are a little sweeter than something like Sour Patch kids, which works for me.

Finally, a message from United Kingdom that we can all agree on:

Insanolord is terrible.

Update: some the candies in Sweet and Sour and covered in Sugar, some in Sour crystals. Also, some of the gummies have a jam center!

The man who sold it to me said it was a mix of Coke and Fanta. I thought he was just describing the flavor.
