Hmmm.... I expected around $350. $400 AU = $300 US.

Oh well i'm glad we get it this year.

Apparently NAL already confirmed a little while ago that we would be getting it this year.  But the confirmation is still comforting. And this is still  well before the ps3 launch as well.  It will be interesting to see if nintendo decide to release anything to attempt take a bit of the hype from the ps3.

Excite Truck better be at launch, then everything's great.

If it's not, you can always import it.  Excite Truck at US launch + region-free first party games = mostly happy Mario.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Mmmmmm, since the US launch is about two weeks before Excite Truck could be AT MY DOOR before Wii is out. Pretty tempting.

Assuming the price of the controllers is correct (from N-europe) the cost of the Wii is WAY too much, comparible with X360.

Cost of XBOX360 premier system in Australia has dropped to $530 AUD, wirless controllers about. $70 (on special even cheaper), old games dropping to $50 AUD.

Max cost of X360 with 3 extral controllers is $530 +3*$70 = $740 AUD
Cost of Wii with 3 extra controllers/Nunchucks is $696 AUD

So Wii is only $46 cheaper than X360, nothing when you consider cheap X360 games available, plus you get Hi definition, DVD player and Hard disk drive. ($140 cheaper if you add the much needed extended warrenty for X360)

Unless Nintendo drastically reduces prices after "early adopter" sales, it has lost the Australian market.  Although I am willing to pay that much if Wii is successful, I am reluctant to do so and be left with another unsupported  system (aka GCN) on my hands.

local gametraders has already promised to offer myself and few mates wii games at 80, which is better then the 90 at toys r us and few other places
so its not that bad really compared with 360's $110
also the $50 are the games most people own (doa, pdz, kameo), so it doesnt really help push sales for those who are waiting for the next big 360 game

Actually IGN has an interview with Nintendo of Europe where they corrected that sternly and clearly stating that the information was incorrect and they will most definitely be used region coding.

I don't mind the price similarity to Xbox 360 though. I mean, It has to be clear to consumers that Wii is at least the same kind of product as Xbox 360. Too much disparity in the price and Wii looks like something just above the $20 Atari Flashback cosnoles they sell at Coles checkouts.

$400 for a Wii in Aus is not really that bad.  Its what I was expecting, we get taxed higher than in other territories plus the cost of shipping the Wii's to Aus is going to push the price up.  If memory serves me correctly the Gamecube debuted here for about $400 without a packin game.  So its not too bad for launch and im sure it wont take too long to drop in price (if your patient enough to wait).  Oh and if you jump in quick you can get a free game when you pre-order your Wii at Toys R Us .  Which is a pretty sweet deal for $400. (It would be interesting to know if you get to pick your game from all titles at launch or whether or not it is refering to a selected few titles or even if its refering to Wii Sports)

Also I dont believe they have released pricing on VC games, remote, remote attachments and classic controller in Australia yet.  This could be where it hurts Nintendo a little bit, having so many controllers, attachments to controllers etc.  If you can use your gamecube controllers for NES, SNES, Gamecube (possibly N64) VC games then it wont be so bad.  Too many accessories will really push the price of the Wii up.

Yeah I'm gonna do the Toys R'Us thing on Monday or Tuesday and I'll find out which games fall under the free game tree.

BTW I know N64 was $400 at launch but I think GameCube was a bit cheaper than that on launch day. Not sure though I didn't get one till Aug 2002.

Wait what, since when has 360 been $530? It's still $650 at the likes of Kmart and EB (though EB gives you a free slice of cancer in the form of Kameo).

Your memory fails you. Gamecube was set to RRP at $400 but after the shock price slash of the Xbox due to poor sales, Nintendo dropped the price to $330 before launch.

Also reading over the American thread, it's clear nwot aht Americans actually pay MORE than teh $250, because in America they don't even include tax ont he final price, so they'll be slapped with anotehr twenty or so dollars at the counter. Whereas our price includes GST.

If you can get a clear answer out of Toys 'R Us please post it here. I checked yesterday and they said possibly it's Wii Sports WTF. Before that they couldnt even say if it would be a Wii game, maybe a Gamecube game.

Anyhow, I placed my pre-order ages ago with EB, the guy there promised to match whatever Toys 'R Us finally come up with.  Still tossing up on whether to continue with actually getting a Wii or not due to the higher than expected price.

I heard from other people that the free game was in addition to whichever package Nintendo would be offering, but I haven't checked myself. The guy said Super Smash Bros Brawl last time I was there. =P
