Final Fantasy 3 for the PSP is this week's big game. Other new releases are sprinkled through out the top 20.

Looks like FFIII jumped the PSP above the Vita this week.  It's kind of funny because isn't FFIII available for DL on the PSN?  So Vita owners could actually play FFIII on the Vita I think.

Nope, FF I and FF II are on PSN but FF III is not. It's only a UMD game.

Yep, this is why Sony not making the Vita backward compatable was a huge mistake for the Japanese market.  Since the PSP is still getting big titles over there, people still have a reason to buy the PSP over the Vita.  This is why backward compatibility is a huge deal for new consoles since it give people a reason to pick it up over the cheaper older system.  Right now Sony is giving people a reason to continue buying the cheaper PSP since they need it to play any upcoming PSP games they want.


Yeah the Vita might have a lot of PSP games on PSN, but people have to remember that downloadable titles still hasn't caught on with a lot of the gaming audience.  Most people prefer to own physical copies of the game and so the Vita not being able to play physical copies of PSP games, when PSP games are still quite popular in Japan is causing a massive split in any sales the Vita might have gotten.  Even when the DS or 3DS were at their lowest, they still outsold the GBA or DS because the backward compatibility still made them attractive systems at the time to any newcomers since they could play games for both systems.  The Vita doesn't have that luxury and the sales clearly show it.

Nice to see Vita getting an uptick here. I assume that is thanks to Ys Celceta. Style Savvy: Trendsetters debuts at number 3; I didn't know it is a sequel. It looks like Dragon Quest X will drop out of the top 20 next week.

Yeah, the 3DS is picking up steam and doing a lot better than it was earlier in its life in Western markets, but it's an unstoppable juggernaut in Japan.

Well the 3DS is the successor to the DS which is the best selling videogame system in Japanese history.  It also helps that Nintendo was able to steal their competitions biggest series Monster Hunter and make it exclusive as well.  So the 3DS is appealing to the huge audience that the DS had, and is appealing to a large chunk of the PSP audience, which pretty much gives Nintendo almost total monopoly over the Japanese handheld market now.

Following Madden at #2 was popular co-operative shooter-cum-RPG, Borderlands 2, which Game Informer report sold 1.48 million copies in its first month on shelves. NPD’s Anita Frazier says that’s a 234% increase over launch sales of the original Borderlands.

Meanwhile, Game Informer also mention that New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the 3DS sold over 295,000 copies in its second month.
