Mad Catz Wii Component Cables Now Available
« on: December 06, 2006, 01:37:55 PM »
Get them while they're hot, and available! UPDATE: The masses have swarmed and the cables are now backordered.

All over the country, people have been trying to get their hands on component cables for their brand spanking new Wiis. Nintendo's online store has them in occasionally, but they're typically backordered. For those of you still looking, Mad Catz is now selling their own Wii component cables via their online store. They are retailing for $19.99. Shipping will set you back $7.50.

Got my Ninty component cables today =D  I had never had components before so I was eager to find out how they looked.  It wasn't the sharpness that really impressed me, it was the improvement in the color.  Separating the colors really helps.  As for clarity, everything looks great except for Link himself who somehow looks worse.  Sharper images brings out the jaggies, I guess.  Excite Truck looked much much better, except that some textures get really blurry at medium distances, and since everything else is sharper they stand out more.  Not a big deal though, especially when I'm having BIG DAMN FUN.

I booted up some GC games to see how they fared and overall I was impressed.  Especially with Metroid Prime.  That games looks absolutely GORGEOUS in progressive scan, it's not jaggy or pixelated at all.  I was disappointed to discover that RE4 doesn't support proscan though ;___;

I give the component cables a thumbsup, but the three weeks I had to wait for them a thumbsdown

Wait, what?  I could have sworn it does...

(Edit: Looking at my box it says it doesn't...I must have dreamt it...)

RE4 doesn't even support 4:3 dude.  It gets away with being "pretty" by having black bars at the top and bottom.

Which is yet another reason why I don't care for using the game as a graphical benchmark for GC games since it takes shortcuts like that.

Checked the website and says they're back ordered. Damn, now that's demand for you.

Once component cables are a bit more plentiful, NWR should do a comparison, see which ones are the best. Speaking, of which, I haven't seen any hardware reviews lately. What gives?

I can speak from personal experience that ResEvil4 is Pro scan. Have 1st party cables for both my Wii and Cube and RE4, at least on my Cube when I hold B, asks me if I cant to go Pro Scan. (Fun fact, Smash Bros. Melee is Pro Scan capable and looks amazing)

Couldn't help but add that all this nonsense wouldn't happen if Nintendo and every other damn video game console company would just use standard component connectors.

Yeah some of the Cube games didn't advertise that they had that mode but you should try anyway.  You might be surprised.

RE4's beauty is almost purely a result of its art and animation quality/style not technical achievement.  There is a bit of specular lighting on the characters (in addition to the vertex lighting) but it's a pretty straightforward rendering engine.  The same could be said of Metroid Prime, the Cube's other jawdroppingly gorgeous game.  It's funny that I find both games to better looking than Eternal Darkness and Rogue Leader both of which have more complex technology by the look of it.

That would take up too much space on the back of the console.  It would also make regional compatibility a pain.  As is, each region can be taken care of by packing in the right cable and making some firmware modifications.

Got my cables, RE 4 does run in progressive scan.

Most cube games I have tested so far run in progressive scan.  Only one not to prompt me so far (even without holding B at the start, Wii does it on its own) is Skies of Arcadia Legends (best cube game ever, though not graphically).

Make sure to have your tv set wide, Wii set wide, Wii set Progressive, and the occasional game set to wide.

Remember when you just had to decide how big of a tv you wanted.  Simpler times :0
