Nintendo Gaming / Re: 3DS XL Mobility Question
« on: June 24, 2012, 02:26:39 PM »
I have the DSiXL and before the 3DS released, I used to carry it with me all the time hoping for some kind of tag, which never happened. There is a HUGE difference between carrying a DSiXL and a 3DS. The XL will fit in your pocket...barely, and can make it uncomfortable when you sit down. I normally wear cargo pants/shorts so I used to slip it into the one of the side pockets. Even then it's noticeable as it bangs your leg.

For me, the bigger screens outweighed the negatives of it being harder to carry around. I plan to buy the 3DSXL day one, and will carry it with me everyday, despite the thing taking up my whole pocket.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Data Transfer - What's your experience?
« on: June 24, 2012, 02:20:11 PM »
I only transferred a couple "apps" when I transferred info from my DSiXL to my 3DS. I kept my games on the DSiXL because I like the bigger screen, and I didn't want to lose my save data.

I wonder how all of this is going to work with the 3DSXL? I want to transfer everything from my DSiXL and 3DS to the 3DSXL when I get it. I forgot about the saves not transferring the previous time. I hope they do this time.

Too negative? You were much more positive than I expected. Maybe that's the effect of not have James Jones with you?

My initial reaction after the show was meh. It started off great and then just ended with a whimper. I believe Nintendo Land should be a pack in. I hate it when Nintendo focuses so much time on games such as these.

With the exception of the mini-games from Nintendo Land, I don't remember seeing anything that couldn't be done on another console. I'm hoping the 3DS show tomorrow provides a little more excitement.

As long as it's streamlined a lot better than Wii Fit. I don't want to have to sit through the same messages each day before I enter my data. Also, on Wii Fit, if you missed entering your activities for a day, you couldn't go back and do it the next day.

This game would have to show me a lot before I would actually buy it. I still use Wii Fit every day, but only to weigh myself.

Why do people feel the need to cheat?

I usually walk 4-5 miles every day and always take my 3DS with me hoping to get a Street Pass. I normally take the same path through my neighborhood. Most days are unsuccessful but every once in awhile, I'll get a surprise. I did hit upon a "hotspot" in which I was passing someone's house who owned a 3DS. I was able to pinpoint about where the house is located so I tried to make sure I was always passing by to try to get a Street Pass. Over the months we Street Passed maybe 8 or 9 times. We both live in West Virginia. Then, about three weeks ago I Street Passed him only to see he was now claiming to be from Hawaii. Needless to say, I wasn't amused because Hawaii is now complete on my map. I'd love to pass someone from Hawaii but I want it to be legit. Then, I Street Passed him a couple days ago to find he is now from Mississippi, so that is another fake "fill in" on my map. I've decided to alter my route and will no longer be Street Passing him.

I know, some will think I'm weird, but I hate it when people "cheat" like that. I want no part of it. Anyone else experienced something like this, or just not care?

Nintendo Gaming / Re: All things Mario Tennis Open!
« on: May 23, 2012, 10:19:44 PM »
I've put around 5 hours into the game thus far. I played Mario Tennis 64 to death and loved it. I skipped the GCN version. I've never played the GB versions. Here are some of my observations:

--I quickly turned the gyro controls off. I don't like moving my 3DS to play.

--I felt the single player tournament play started off way too easy. I got to the 4th cup without even losing a set, not a game, but a set. Unlocking the "pro" com players is much better. However, I'm still not finding it difficult to advance. I'm now in the 8th cup and I think I've lost a match twice now.

--Doubles play I haven't touched yet.

--It took me awhile to figure out how to earn coins and I don't like it. Basically, the only way to earn coins is to play the mini-games. There are so many items to buy that you'll have to spend hours playing these 4 mini-games over and over to ever have a chance to buy most of them as the items aren't cheap. From my experience, playing tournament and online earns you zero coins. Not a fan of that.

--Online with friends. At first I thought this would be great. I have 99 friends on my 3DS and I'd say close to 10 own this game (you can tell by the friend leader boards). The first time I ever went online, there was a friend waiting to play and we played 3 games. It was fun although I appeared to be a little more experienced than him. Since that time, I have never been able to hook up with a friend again. It's way too hard to hook up and I now realize how lucky I was the first time. The problem is this isn't like Mario Kart in which you can join in. You have to create a room, and then wait for a friend to show up and play. The chances of that happening are slim to none. There's no way to communicate with your friends to join up, even if they are playing Mario Tennis at the same time.

--Online with strangers. I've played probably 30 matches and lost around 20 of them. I've only experienced lag during one match. The rest have been flawless. I've only played the tiebreaking matches online. Basically, the first to 7 points wins. If I've played 30 matches I'd say 28 of them ended in a score of 7-0, 7-1, or 7-2. The game is supposed to match you with people matching your skill but as of yet, this isn't happening. I'm hoping once you play a few games the matches will be better. It's no fun playing someone you have no chance of beating, or someone that has no chance of beating you. To make it worse the items you equip are carried online. It's very easy to get matched against someone that already has bought the dominant items which makes it even tougher to compete if you haven't spent hours playing the mini-games to earn coins.

--This game makes me grip my 3DS so hard my thumb is usually throbbing after a play session. Not sure why I keep doing that.

--I also wish you could take the touch controls off the bottom screen (which I never use) and replace it the scoreboard. There have been several instances in which I had to go to the pause screen to see where we were in the match.

Reading through this probably indicates I hate this game, which I certainly don't. I enjoy and look forward to playing. It's just frustrating that it appears corners were cut. I agree with most of the reviews. Good game that could have been great. Feel free to discuss.

Yeah, I live in a small town, approx 35,000. Of my 40 some Street Passes, I think 7 are from my daughter (I don't live with her). The rest are all natural with no conventions or anything like that. I do have some repeats but I have no idea who these people are in real life.

I'm the same way, I really hate crowds. Now I find myself looking forward to going trying to get Street Passes. I'm usually disappointed. I only have 40-45 and I've had the system since launch. I think the most I ever got in one day was 3 one time, all near my house which is crazy. You just never know. But I'm constantly checking it in my pocket, looking for that green light.

Holy crap, I have hit the Streetpass Motherload.  In the space of 5 or 6 hours, within 1 square mile, I have gotten 21 streetpasses.  And no, this was not a gaming, anime, cosplay, or general nerd convention.  This was not a college campus, a gamestop, or a streetpass gathering.

This was a place, a magical place, a place which many call the happiest place on Earth.  The place where, fittingly, I got my very first Streetpass 2 days after launch last year.

Yes, my friends, that place was Disneyland.  Freakin Disneyland.  On a very uncrowded Mother's Day.

Just wanted to share.  Oh, and some guy named Cardfrek who works at Disneyland (I know this because that's what his Mii said) has a NES Hat.   Not Famicom.  NES.   Oh, I want that hat so bad.  What do you have to do to get that?

Cool, I'll probably be going there for a day in about a month. I went last year in mid June and got 2 the whole day. I was really disappointed. I'm expecting many more this year.

TalkBack / Re: StreetPass Experiments in Tokyo!
« on: April 27, 2012, 05:37:58 PM »
First, you guys look nothing like I envisioned after listening to several episodes of the Famicast. Second, while I agree there was a ton of variables to the experiments, it's by far the most comprehensive information I've seen about StreetPassing. I found it to be entertaining.

I think there is a lot of variables at play with the 3DS's themselves. I have a 3DS and so does my daughter. I've pulled up in front of her house to pick her up and watched my 3DS light turn green before she even comes out of the house. Another time, I picked her up, went to a restaurant, and looked at my 3DS to see the light was not on. Then, about 10 minutes later I checked it and it was green with her tag. So it literally took 25+ minutes to register.

I also walk a lot along a busy street in which the speed limit is 35mph. I have got street passes from people driving past me in a car (maybe one every other week or so). I've also noticed I'm much more app to tag someone's 3DS in which I get their game information (Mario Kart 7, Mario 3DS Land tags) but not get the Street Pass Mii. I realize some may have not set up their 3DS's to make the Street Pass but it has happened so frequently when I'm walking I think I'm losing their connection before the Mii is passed between systems.

You'd think there would be more information out there regarding experiments like this. I didn't realize there was a 5 hour buffer between Street Passes so that makes it tough to test.

Nintendo Gaming / Wii died...how to prepare for repairs
« on: February 25, 2012, 05:59:29 PM »
Well, my Wii which I've had since 2 months after launch appears to have finally died. It still works, just won't read the discs anymore. I'm somewhat lucky as I finally just finished up 3 months of playing Zelda: Skyward Sword last night. Started playing Fishing Resort today and a couple hours in my Wii got really noisy and the game music started skipping. On top of that, it was taking 3-4 times longer to load the game screens than usual. I finally got a disc read error.

I reset the game and started playing again, within 20 minutes the exact same thing happened. Frustrated, I quit playing thinking it was the disc. Then when I came back to it, the Wii won't even read the disc. I tried putting Zelda back in and it won't read that either. So I guess I'll now have to send it to Nintendo.

I have about 5 years of info saved on here. My question is, what all can I backup to an SD card in case the unthinkable happens and I lose it all in the process of it being fixed? Any suggestions?

Nintendo Gaming / Re: 3DS Pedometer Discussion
« on: January 07, 2012, 11:07:44 AM »

I usually carry it with me on my bike ride to and from work, but sometimes i forget, and i just don't feel like it's worth carrying around after i reach my 10 coins. After i beat Find Mii and got all the puzzle pieces before the update, i stopped carrying it with me. It's too big to comfortably carry with my keys, wallet, and phone. If i was still earning coins i'd do it anyway!

If I wear jeans it's a definite problem. While the 3DS is small, it's not that small. However, I usually wear cargo pants/shorts with numerous pockets so that works out well for me.

Another favorable review. I'm most certainly picking this up when I complete Zelda. I wish someone would try the rod attachment out and review that with the game.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: 3DS Pedometer Discussion
« on: January 06, 2012, 05:50:36 PM »
I saw this post right before I went on a walk so decided to test it. After coming home, my pedometer read 9,050 steps while my 3DS read 8,810. Not bad.

My steps are at 1,555,000 starting from 4/5/11. Unfortunately I have 1 month where I only played the 3DS a few hours and never carried it with me. I take it with me everywhere now...don't want to lose a Street Pass!

I think it would be be cool getting some kind of gift for reaching 10,000 steps in a day. Maybe a puzzle piece for a puzzle that only only be put together using pieces obtained by walking 10,000 steps a day. Online leader boards would also be cool, especially if it included the people on your friend's list.

Of course people could cheat but if they wanted to shake the 3DS 10,000 times, let them go for it ;)

I wear a quality pedometer and on days when I've had my 3DS with me all day, the results are surprisingly similar between the two.

Yes, you've got it exact, 100 steps = 1 coin, 10 coins per day max. I try to walk 10,000 steps per day for health purposes and I usually have my 3DS with me (have like 1.5 million steps total, lol) but 10 coins a day is all you'll get.

If you are registered as friends, does it register your friends' times? I don't think it does which is too bad. I saw you could choose several different ghosts to race against but it would be better if you could race a friend's ghost instead of random ghosts.

I finished the first quest probably using 95% purchased level 1 and 2 Miis. It's not that hard to finish it without street passing others.

Also, I did go to Universal Studios last summer and got a grand total of 2 tags. I'm sure it would be better now but I expected more. You only get 10 coins per day, 1,000 steps is nothing. I normally get that even if I don't leave the house in a day.

I'm still having next to no luck with Street Pass. I'm hoping a few people got this for Christmas and it picks up. I went to the local mall a couple days before Christmas and spent around 2 hours in there. Not one Street Pass was made. Then a couple days ago I went to visit a friend in Columbus OH. We went to eat lunch at a Dave and Busters...again, not one street pass. I think I'm at around 16 total now but have had it since launch. If you take out the tags I've gotten on vacations, I'm probably averaging one per month.
