I presume Wii U figures are low considering those new bundles (+ Wii Party U) were released yesterday. Will be interesting to see what impact they have on next weeks sales.

It will be interesting to see what sales level Vita ends up stabilising at this time.

Yeah, Power Pro's was definitely one of my most played Wii games for a few years.  It's a shame it stopped coming out in the US since it was pretty easy to pick up and get into yet had tons of depth for long term play.

Second quarter investor Q&A is now in English.
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/131031qa/index.html

Interesting bits:

The timing of the Nintendo 2DS:
"Generally speaking, it takes approximately one and a half years before we can bring a new hardware system onto the market, and we already realized beforehand that it would be difficult to maximize the sales potential of Nintendo 3DS without an entry-level product ready in time for the release of a new Pokémon title. "

On third parties:
"In terms of how we view our relationship with third-party publishers, I think it is natural that there is a difference between publishers who have the software development resources like Nintendo’s to build a software lineup of their own and publishers who do not. Since former President Yamauchi passed away, I have been considering what he taught us in the end, and his words that the worst thing we can do in entertainment is to follow what others are doing spoke directly to my heart. Following and imitating others is the kind of reasoning that Nintendo tries to avoid the most, and while we certainly do not have a negative attitude toward strengthening our ties with third-party publishers, employing the same methodology as the other manufacturers would only lead to the most simplistic competitive approaches, such as price wars or money-giving that would never end. We would like to take a unique approach of our own and build sustainable relationships with our third-party publishers."

On legacy content/previous assets:
"In terms of taking greater advantage of our previous assets, I feel that there are two points to consider. As we first began to do on Wii, one method would be to release games for our previous consoles, such as Nintendo Entertainment System or Super Nintendo Entertainment System, on other Nintendo consoles as Virtual Console games. While Wii U and Nintendo 3DS already offer Virtual Console software, I feel that we have not been able to take full advantage of our assets yet, so we would like to enrich our Virtual Console lineup. As the ability to digitally offer our products has given us greater flexibility in offering new propositions to our consumers, we should naturally consider these possibilities in the future. The other point is, as you mentioned, whether we should release our games on smart devices. At the moment, however, we believe a more balanced approach would be to use our content to increase the value of our hardware as opposed to distributing it on smart devices, and therefore, we have no plans to release Nintendo content on smart devices."

Since becoming the CEO of Nintendo of America:
"In a variety of senses, we are now facing a big turn of the tide, particularly with respect to digitalizing our business. When it comes to systematically marketing packaged software including its distribution, I can say that Nintendo of America is the most advanced among all the distribution divisions/subsidiaries of the company. On the other hand, perfection may sometimes cause an issue when a drastic environmental change has taken place. For our distribution divisions/subsidiaries, in order to initiate a great change ourselves, it is critical to learn from our counterparts around the world and locally implement their best practices and turn the PDCA* cycle quickly. I feel that the process of learning from Japan and Europe and thereby changing in accordance with the changing times while, at the same time, making use of the existing advantages Nintendo of America possesses, has certainly become quicker in comparison to how it was before, when I was communicating indirectly with people at Nintendo of America. We would like to show some tangible results during the year-end sales season.

*PDCA stands for Plan-Do-Check-Act and is an iterative method in business for continuous improvement for processes."

Nintendo has around 5,000 employees and does not plan to fire any of them in the foreseeable future:
"If you believe that there is no possibility of Nintendo’s results improving, then you would be right about it being necessary to review the structure of the workforce and the company itself to match the scale of the business. However, I believe that there are upward and downward swings in the video game business, that Nintendo has the potential to be a larger-scale business, and that in order to achieve that potential, good developers, localization capability and the ability to sell overseas are necessary. We need a company with a lot of muscle, but a company that also has no excess fat – one that makes smart spending decisions. Restructuring the workforce is not the first option we consider even when cost cutting is required. I would like you to understand that this is because we do not see a dark future for Nintendo."

On the company shares held by the late Mr. Yamauchi:
"First of all, please understand that the first 49 days* after his death have not yet passed and, accordingly, there is nothing concrete we can say as to what we might do. However, I received a similar question when we made the financial announcements yesterday at the Osaka Securities Exchange, and I answered by saying that, if the bereaved family approaches the company with a proposal regarding the inheritance, and if there is something we can do to cooperate, we are willing to do so. For the benefit of all of our shareholders, we are willing to cooperate if needed so as not to disturb our stock price as a result of his large stake in the company being released onto the market at once. Please understand, however, it would be only after the bereaved family contacted us to discuss this subject and, once again, if they do so, it will probably be only after the 49th day. I myself want the company to appropriately do what it has to do in order to not cause trouble for everyone, and I believe that the company has the fiscal ability to do so if needed.

*In Buddhism, the first 49 days after one’s death are regarded as an especially solemn mourning period."

He only held something like 10-20% of Nintendo's stock.  You really don't need 50%+ to take control of a company since most shareholders don't bother to vote.

Well even if he technically didn't have "control" he has significant influence with 10-20% and can make life hard on the board if they didn't listen to him.

3rd parties is the one thing I strongly disagree with Nintendo on.  Microsoft/Sony pick exclusives to moneyhat and they let most games go to both systems since they know they can't buy everything.  They just try to get the best bang for their buck and get something that benefits both parties.  Microsoft moneyhatted GTA4 because that was a crucial time and it led to many people picking a 360 over a PS3.  You won't find anything specific but I guess they view that as $50M well spent.  They didn't moneyhat GTA5 because the 360 is at it's end of life.  It's not going to sell significantly more systems and they are starting to shift resources to the Xbox One.  PS3 didn't moneyhat it either but they both go the game while the Wii U did not.  Not because of some secret vendetta.  It was because Sony/Microsoft have courted those games and developed a userbase that scoops up those games while Nintendo has not.

Their version of "sustainable relations" is about as sustaining as me and Jennifer Aniston's relationship.  She doesn't call, visit, care, or know I exist at all.  I see that sustaining for a long while.

I see not doing the same things from a game development standpoint smart.  You have to keep coming up with different game experiences to keep people excited and bring them back.  Trying to copy Halo 4 is a terrible idea even though it is a very popular game.  I find not copying well designed business plans (online gaming, getting third parties involved, reward programs PSN/Xbox with free games) just stupid.  It's not visionary to have a 2013 console that has the online infrastructure of a 2003 console at all.  I don't see the rationale behind that.  I don't see the rationale that the Wii U has enough first party support to avoid 3rd parties.

The VC talk seems like rah rah corporate speak.  I've had the same problem with VC since the first year it was released on the Wii and it hasn't been corrected at all.

If the 2DS took a year and half to come to market, I wonder if they are already working on a Wii U successor.

Marketing is a funny bird.  Usually you have a window of time to get a product to become "it" and if you miss that window consumers are over the product.  I think the Wii U missed that opportunity.  Not saying it's impossible but I don't recall a home console ever overcoming a poor start.  The PS2/Xbox360 had slower (not Wii U slow) first years because they didn't have enough boxes to sell.  That's about as close as it's come.  Sure the DS/3DS are models in the handheld arena but there is a supreme lack of competition in that arena.  It's hard to tell people that this game console that everybody has ignored for a year is the hot new thing.  The PS4/Xbox One have a solid launch of titles and the PS3/360 have a much better selection at a cheaper price.  The Wii U is just not in an enviable spot right now even if it has an okay selection of games at this point.

If you can hit on another game/peripheral as a hot thing, then the Wii U becomes a conduit to that.

The new Wii U bundles bring quite an uptick to sales. Now the question is how long it will keep. The new Little Battlers game by Level 5 debuts at #3 with 50k units sold. Wii Party U sells 37k for a 6th place spot.

Monster Hunter 4 STILL edging out the New comer in Lifetime sales.  I was sure Pokemon was going to catch it this week.

To have caught it this week, with MH4 selling nothing, Pkm would have had to sell 240k units
At current sales rates, it looks like it won't catch it until the week after next.
If MH4 were to sell nothing next week, Pkm would still need 141k units sold to match it.

If this is a trend upwards for the Wii U then it's nice, but if this is a spike then it's still in trouble. It's too early to say if it's recovering.

According to @GibboGame:
Quote from: David Gibson
Japan - Pokemon X/Y sold another 138k last week to take total to 3.1m with 94% sell through so hard to find.

There should be enough demand for Pokemon to easily surpass Monster Hunter 4. Nintendo didn't make enough game cards or distribute them most effectively.

These charts do not include digital sales, right? I wonder where those would put MH4 and Pokémon X/Y.

Either way this IS the highest WiiU sales have ever been in Japan all year.  Honestly, though, I don't see it being just another spike.  With Mario 3D being marketed there and that guaranteed to push systems, I'd say the system is getting back on the right track there.

Huh. Didn't know Japan liked Battlefield that much.
Your (annoying?) doomsayer's fuel for this week is Wii U sales dropping more than half from last week to this week.
From rough guessing, Pokemon X/Y should surpass Monster Hunter 4 in one or two weeks.
