Blue / New Super Mario Bros. is 15 years old today.
« on: May 16, 2021, 12:51:33 AM »
Remember when New Super Mario. Bros. was new?

2
Apparently you still won't be able to submit new Vita games after July so **** you indie devs who bought a Vita Devkit in 2021.

Sauce

3
Considering how many server issues they had, it wouldn't surprise me if they tried to capitalize on the PS3 and Vita's exclusive content. I could see them roping some sap into making an "Only on PS3 Download" section of the store for when they try to close it again.

4
There were apparently devs who literally just bought a Vita Devkit right before the announcement was made. The whole thing was a trainwreck.

Fine. I'll throw my hat in the ring.

1. Monster Hunter Rise (Switch)
2. Sonic Adventure (PC)
3. Freedom Wars (Vita)
4. The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (DS)

The only problem is that Monster Hunter is stupidly addictive, to the point where I'm still listing it even though I have already cleared the village quests and completed the last Hub urgent that's currently available.

I might have a problem.

I keep forgetting to do a wrap up post but I should be able to get one tomorrow (knock on wood).

I don't understand why they didn't announce this when they announced that the website store was closing for PS3/Vita

9
It looks like the PS3 is having server issues with the PSN store. I can't imagine how that happened, I mean Sony's servers are nothing if not reliable.

I finished the story mode for this over the weekend and I'm having an absolute blast with the game. The movement is so good.

I'd rather have replays back personally.

Continuing Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO's Jim Ryan's legacy of incompetence and disdain for Sony's heritage, Sony finally officially confirmed today the closure dates for the PS3, PSP, & Vita PSN Stores. This follows last year's removal of those systems from their redesigned-to-be-**** browser-based store.

The PS3 & PSP online stores will go offline on 7/2/21, and the Vita's store will go down on 8/27/21. This effectively permanently kills off the Vita (which was still seeing new indie games), as Sony shut down manufacturing of Vita game cards years ago so no new physical media can be produced.

The one good(ish) piece of news from all this is that owners of these consoles will still be able to redownload titles from their Download History, provided they're willing to scroll through the thousands of pages of entries they've accumulated by this point (I did that once. Never again).

I fucking despise Jim Ryan. I've never seen someone so dedicated to killing the PlayStation brand, from his censorship policies almost exclusively against Japanese games, to his on-record disdain for older games, to the closure of Sony Japan Studios, to his lack of interest in making anything other than games in the Naughty Dog mold.

I just love the optics of Sony cutting off support for their first digital only console almost immediately after they launched the PS5 all digital version.

The Series X interface is, as far as I can tell, identical to the Xbox One's, which I like, and fits the approach Microsoft seems to be taking with the platform.
It's ironic that they're using the same ui considering this is the same company that introduced like 8 different ui overhauls on the 360.

Nintendo Gaming / The 3DS 10th Anniversary Thread

As an official 3DS ambassador I come bringing good news about the 3DS. Beware the so called "successor" The Nintendo Switch. It is nothing but a false prophet.

I thought Khushrenada was supposed to be on top of this whole spambot thing and yet here I went and found one from January.

But the Switch... ...people are not worried about it's power,
That aged well.

« on: March 09, 2021, 06:02:32 PM »
Having the DS version of Mario 64 on the VC as well makes the N64 version completely irrelevant tbh. The Wii U's N64 emulation is subpar, even compared to what you could get on Wii Mode and the DS version has an improved camera system and comes on the Wii U's vastly superior DS emulation.

Plus it comes with save state support and the fact that the DS version of the game was really good at faking analog input with the D-pad makes it feel much more authentic than something like the 8-way digital movement in 3D World.

19
I'm testing it out and the GB emulator for DS can actually use the rumble pack in Warioware Twisted for Pokémon Pinball.

For anyone who is like me who is stuck with a new 3DS for this game, there is a C-stick mod that a bunch of Monster Hunter players use but it also makes the C-stick much more usable on the new 3DS. I don't think this video has ever been posted on the forums before. It's totally unprecedented.

Link because the YouTube embed system on the forums has been broken for years and anyone who claims it works is a dirty liar.

21
I will admit that I've kind of lost interest in the Analog Pocket now that I've dug into DS homebrew. The problem is the DS is capable of running an extremely competent GB/GBC emulator off of a DS flashcard and between that and the difficulty of acquiring a unit it has become difficult to justify getting the pocket. Hell, it's even possible to use a DS flash cart to force the DS into GBA mode so I could just use a DS phat or lite with a flash cart in one slot and Warioware Twisted in the other to have an all in one game playing solution for the DS-GB lines, and a DS lite can be had for a quarter of the price of a pocket.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Not a hater but... (future prediction)
« on: March 04, 2021, 06:31:34 PM »
The 3DS pretty much just had Atlus and Capcom past year two in the west, and I have a hard time believing that either company was putting their best foot forward at that point, largely because the 3DS was so cheap to develop for. Everything else that came over was published by Nintendo in the west as I recall.

But the Switch is getting a bunch of ports of recent-ish games like the Spyro: Reignited Trilogy that nobody ever bothered with for the Wii U or even the Wii.

And even Indies are massively improved. With the Wii U and 3DS there was always a question of whether a game would come to 3DS or Wii U because the non-new 3DS lacked engine support and the Wii U was... the Wii U. Even games that were promised for the Wii U like Project Cars never materialized. With the Switch it is the opposite. If anything it's surprising when a game isn't coming to Switch.

They are about £180 or about $200. One I saw had a home brew app installed.
The Wii U is a really good emulation beast. PS1 and N64 games are a bit questionable but it can natively run Gamecube games which is really nice.

All right time to lower the anchors!

Total: -5

So far this has been a rousing success.

LOL. I had a suddenly had a vision of 30 or 40 people joining up for this event and then we all bought a bunch of games. We won't just torpedo the score past 0. We'll sink it so hard and fast to leave a crater on the ocean floor!!

I am going to keep playing and finish the other 15 but I wanted to get something else on the board to balance my purchase.

But if buying a game is -3 points and finishing a game is only 1 point then how is it balanced? You're still at -2. Pokepal is really out to punish you all if you buy a game!
It's balanced around not buying games, not so much completing them.

All right time to lower the anchors!

Downloaded two games:
-3 points: Capcom Arcade Stadium: 1943 Battle for Midway
-3 points: Capcom Arcade Stadium: Ghosts 'n Goblins
Beat one of them:
+1 point: 1943 Battle for Midway
Total: -5

1943 Midway is not a very good game, just kinda loops 2 types of levels 16 times in a row with more of the same five enemy types everytime. Powerups aren't persistent either.
Also tried Ghosts 'n Goblins but lo & behold I'm again bad at this. Who would've thought after trying and being bad at the NES, and SNES versions?
Also don't love the whole Capcom Arcade Stadium wrapper. Everything seems to trigger a 3-8 page tutorial, and it's annoying the menu options change when you're playing a game or selecting one. The NSO NES/SNES apps are way less fancy, but also a lot easier to grasp at a glance.
So far this has been a rousing success.

Technically each player starts at 6 points so you're still at +1.
