General Chat / Amazing Science/Technological achievements
« on: September 15, 2017, 02:46:04 PM »
http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-41207827

"Cassini is dead, long live Cassini!".

It flew through Saturn's rings, landed the furtherest probe from earth yet on a distant moon, tasted a foreign ocean by flying through a massive plume, found a place that might have a form of life as we know it, tested Einstein's theories again confirming it with even greater accuracy than before, sent back stunning pictures, 600+GB of data to be studied for decades to come, advanced earthly technology with cutting edge research and inspired countless to pursue the sciences.

With the destruction of Cassini it is a good time as any to promote other scientific marvels that might have missed the mainstream news especially in these seemingly dark times.

Nintendo Gaming / 3DS XL "Not big enough..."
« on: July 13, 2012, 08:50:36 AM »
...for a second circle pad. This got a good laugh out of me. I wasn't even sure whether or not to stick this bit of news in the funhaus.

Quote from: Iwata Sez
Later this month the 3DS XL handheld launches in Europe. When you were designing the XL were you tempted to put in a second analogue stick as standard?

When we looked at the design of the 3DS XL we had to look at various factors, one was battery life, one was the overall size of the unit, and we had to make some trade-offs. The choice, if we were going to include the second analogue stick, was to reduce the size of the batters or make the unit much bigger.

What we wanted to do was have a bigger screen in comparison with the overall size of the system, so had various discussions and had to make trade-offs and this is the outcome.Attaching a second analogue stick is possible but it would have made the system even bigger and, though it perhaps puts a burden on people that really want that second stick, it’s a call we had to make and these people will have to live with it.
This [the lack of a second stick] isn’t my main focus when I look at the 3DS XL, it’s one point we had to cover, but for me personally I’m quite happy with the product we’re able to offer.

Given the size of that thing, most people assumed you are throwing mobility out the window, why not go the whole hog? The thing is big enough to kill a man as it is, CPPXL would allow you to take on a bear.

Source.

General Gaming / Steam forums hacked and more!
« on: November 10, 2011, 07:08:47 PM »
Quote
Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don't have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they log in. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

 Gabe.

The Steam forums has been down until now without word. Steam forums are still currently locked out with the above message. Steam Itself remains fully functional and for now to their best knowledge, untouched.

General Chat / Interactivity trip report special: Armageddon 2011 NZ
« on: October 23, 2011, 12:43:46 AM »
It's that time of the year again, the one and only thing of interest that happens in NZ regarding Pop culture is here: Armageddon. Set this coming Labour weekend in Auckland, NZ.

Saturday Oct 29th
– 9am to 6pm
Sunday Oct 30th – 9am to 6pm
Monday Oct 31st – 10am to 5pm

Normally I wouldn't bother writing a whole trip report and it is frowned upon to treat the forums like a personal Blog. However it is a once a year thing and there is a kicker for the forum goers out there. Mostly due to general disinterest I have in the line up for this year, I have decided to open this trip up to everyone.

What does this mean for YOU?

For 3 days you get to send me out on tasks of no importance! There will be some rules, but joke submissions that are doable maybe considered. The rules follow:

It can't cost money. Unless you're going to pay for it or is something I would have done myself, this is nonnegotiable.

Not illegal. Duh...

Must not unfairly impose on a third party or me. No stalking, nothing sexual, must be work safe, etc. Be reasonable. Forum rules still apply.

Must be photographable.

Be specific. No open ended tasks. IE, review every game on the floor.

2D photos only. May change if I can find that SD card reader and somewhere to upload them....

Coverage priority will be based on Well Known Forum Members and Staffers > Anybody else. You know who you are.

Rules and additional rules are subject to change with no notice.

-----

Basically, if you want something photographed or interacted with in a photo or covered in this show, this is your chance to call the shots. This is open to anybody to the forums, NWR staffers included. Questions and results will be posted in this thread.

General Gaming / Frozen Synapse: Tactical Chess Violence Ballet
« on: May 31, 2011, 01:03:22 AM »

It can be found Here or on Steam for PC and Mac(Both Intel and PPC!) and has rock bottom system requirements 1+GHz, 512Megs RAM and some sort of graphics capability. They are currently both the same price right now at $20 and they both come with Steam keys and a free copy for a friend. I currently still got my copy and looking to trade it for another game on Steam although if nothing comes of it, I might consider offering it up as a Mafia prize with a matching theme...

What is Frozen Synapse?

I ask you a question in return. Have you heard of or played the original Rainbow 6? You seen Tron? This game is the planning phase of that game broken up into 5 second turns painted in Tron. It has to be seen to be understood so here is a bunch of Youtube results. Basically you and your opponent plan out 5 seconds chunks which your team execute simultaneously once each side has submitted it's plan. Each piece has a single weapon that can be a shotgun, machine gun, sniper, rocket or nade launcher. They each have their own weakness and strengths based on the weapon type and for anybody who has played a game with guns, it's pretty self explanatory.

There are no health bars as any one hit will kill and all units of the same type are made equal. The only thing saving your team is how well you can manoeuvre your pieces ducking through cover, position, range, facing/aiming, "Stillness" and posture. The units will follow your orders precisely, so if you send a unit into a wall without blowing it up with a rocket first, it will continue walking into that wall. The only free will the units have is who to fire upon (I believe it's closest/closest to firing upon first) and even that can be subsumed should it be required. It's possible to have opposing units cross each other point blank and not fire if both are told not to.

The single player campaign is fairly hard. The computer gets more units and better postions. The only advantage you have is that you're sentient. While the AI can come up with some very good plans, you can always come up with better, more innovative plans although the AI has a nasty habit of sniping you through the tinniest openings. When a plan goes as planned, it's a ballet of violence.

I have only played a couple of games of multi and it's crazy when you both counter guess each other and you dance around each other and no one dies. Early kills are quite important as it allows you to leverage the extra units you have, but until till the last unit is down, there is a chance of a come back or forcing a draw or a weak victory on your opponent.

Games can last anywhere from minutes to days depending how active the players are and you can have as many games going at the same time as you can handle. Matching are made according to your level, so you won't gets paired with some one who has played dozens of games to your zero. I highly suggest that you play single player before jumping into multi unless you enjoy losing. It has Youtube and social network integration. You can view your old games to see where you went wrong and others to see where they went right. There are a number of modes like deathmatch, hostage, secure and charge.

There is currently no demo and the word has it co-op is planned to be added. If a forum member wants a game, user name is oohhboy.

General Gaming / Invaders Corruption Mac/PC
« on: November 24, 2010, 11:48:30 PM »
Here a quick blurb from the site.

Quote
Invaders: Corruption is a free, independently developed arena shooter developed and designed by Manuel van Dyck. It is available for free through this site, or other portal sites such as Apple.com.
The goal of the game is to survive as long as possible, evading and shooting Invaders, collecting power-ups, and when successful—posting your scores on-line sharing your generation 'Core Seeds' with other players.

It's a free geometry wars type shooter.

I currently hold the high score and broke the 1 million and the 2 million marks first. No doubt some Japanese or Korean sin against nature will get their hands on this and destroy the scores, but get in on the action while it's still hot. So far I am still seeing new enemies appear, so there is a lot of game to go.

W.T.F.

Althought if it is as inspired as what Melancholic Goat has written in this forum there might be hope yet.

ACT TWO, SCENE ONE - DOMESTIC DISPUTE
int. kitchen.

Edward Norton and Morgan Freeman stand in the kitchen, eating from plates with their hands while standing up because a newspaper and an unpaid bill are occupying the table space where their chairs are. Suddenly, both put their plates on the floor and begin shouting abuse at the heavens because their bladders are full. Both run, arms and legs flailing wildly, towards the bathroom door. Morgan Freman is inches ahead and makes it into the bathroom first. As he drops his trousers and sits on the toilet seat, Edward Norton enters the bathroom, arms and legs flailing wildly as before.

Morgan Freeman: Rada rada blahah rar!

Edward Norton exits bathroom emotionlessly. Once outside, he grabs his crotch and begins to shake uncontrollably.

Edward Norton: Ooargh blug tirah ooargh!

Edward Norton pisses onto the floor, then walks calmly back into the kitchen, retrieves his plate from the floor, and continues his meal, clothing saturated with his own urine.

fade to black.

Here is another one!

ACT THREE, SCENE FOUR - PASTIMES
ext. back yard.

Edward Norton is benchpressing the same amount he has been benchpressing for the last five hours. He shows no sign of fatigue. He shows no sign of exhaustion. He shows no emotion. He is the perfect weightlifting machine. Morgan Freeman is playing chess against himself. Neither man says a word. Neither man looks in the other's direction.

The front doorbell rings. Both men clearly hear it from the back yard, but as they are engaged in activities, they are unable to stop for one god damned second to go to the front door and speak in tongues for seven hours.

Suddenly, Edward Norton stands up, having benched his own body weight for the 900th repetition in a row, and dives into the pool. The image pauses, and a mouse cursor slowly slides across the screen. It clicks on the pool ladder. The pool ladder disappears. Time resumes as normal.

Edward Norton says nothing; he makes no noise. He does not appear to have noticed that the ladder is missing. He makes no attempt to climb out of the pool: his face set in grim, fatalistic, determination, he continues to swim laps, never slowing, never resting.

Morgan Freeman continues to play chess. One assumes that he hears Edward Norton swimming laps, every mechanical stroke bringing him one lap closer to a watery grave, but he continues to glare across the chess board at his invisible opponent as he moves the Knight to E4 and puts himself in check.

Hours pass.

Edward Norton drowns. A gravestone appears at the side of the pool. Morgan Freeman stands up emotionlessly, and then runs, arms and legs flailing wildly, to the bathroom.

fade to black.

Anyone here funnier than he is?

This is a spin off thread from I didn't graduate Thread. Come here to list, whine, cry, slurp your employment related problems. If it is a job related problem, post it here. Whether you are trying to find one, the boss is riding you in your current one or you need to pull the ejection handle, do it here.

I will start off with own semi-current story from the previous thread plus an update at the end.

Quote

Employers are a real pain in the ass sometimes. Atleast they are contacting you and telling you something. I have to chase up each and every one of my CVs to see what has happened to it. When I do catch up with them they start getting all nervous and weird. I normally have to come up short of verbally squezzing them with my salesperson mind powers to get a straight answer from them.

Store manager: "Errm, yeah these things take time" (Been two weeks)
Me: "Yeah you know any info would be nice"
SM : "A letter should have been sent by now"
Me: " Alright then, thanks"

Several working days later (Fouth visit)

Me: "Hi, again, no letter, nothing" (Notes new staff around the store)
SM: "Those things are from HQ"
Me: "Yeah thats great and all, but can you just tell me like yes/no and what is in that letter?"
SM: "Well, err, there aren't any opennings at this store, but HQ looks at them. Why are you chasing this?"
Me: "You know, so I know what I might be doing with myself" (What I am really saying: "FU M0th3r #$^, you could have told me this crap a week ago, now your trying to interogate me on my motivations for following up a CV")
SM: "Oh, ok"
Me: "Thanks anyway" (Asshat)

Epilouge: Still no job, no letter.

Update: Letter arrived. Take a good guess what it said.

Edit for better title.
