What drunken drivel is this

It's comments like this that make me feel reaaallll old that I can explain not only what Bill was complaining about, but that this was a cyclical problem.

There were always trolls here, even way before cubed canuck. They all came and went, it just happens that Rick or Hrusecky banned people long before they had enough time to build up anything even approaching a resume of trolling so there isn't as many names for people.

I remember when everyone liked Ian. Seven years ago he was probably the most prominent poster, or at least a tied for one of the most, along with SPE and a few others. What the heck happened? Staying on this forum make him go crazy (like Gray Ninja)?

So mouse told me that we're having some kind of reunion. Well I say BAH! Rick Powers would have none of this sort of nonsense, bannable offense for all! Why are you rabble not posting serious information and quivering?! In my day we either got a thread dedicated for our arguing with everyone (Mouse) or we just argued with everyone regardless of the topic and continued to ramble angrily way past any point of decent punctuation and we liked it even when we didn't so ha!

I think the first post I made here either concerned Virtua Soccer for the Gamecube or trying to figure out if this was in fact the forum I had previously been going to, which may or may not have been planet n2000. Never quite figured out if I was in the right place or not.

General Gaming / RE:Folding@Home
« on: April 13, 2007, 02:58:02 PM »
This is about the third time I've posted since I left with mouse. I just can't stand seeing such unqualified stupidity.

Folding@home is a waste of resources? Since you do absolutely nothing to back up your assertion, let me just go ahead and do it for you.

According to the folding@home stats site (available here) There are around 30,000 active CPUs, and just for the sake of ease, we will just call that 50,000 active CPUs.

The PS3 runs at about 200Wh. For the entire system, thats about 1MWh. In your strange little world of power equivalences, this is to be considered a lot of energy. Just for reference, a 30hp engine is outputting 25,000W, which is about the hp used for everyday cruising. In other words, if there were 40 less cars driving an hour in the world, that would offset the power used by folding@home for the ps3 module.

Now for the facts of folding@home, and the good it provides.

There have been over 50 peer reviewed papers released, with dozens in the pipelines.

The first computer based, peer reviewed article, about the misfolding of a protein responsible for 50% of all cancers. Significant research into the causes and into understand Mad Cow Disease, Alzheimer's, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's, and of course cancer, just to name a few.

Millions upon millions of people are affected by these diseases, many doomed to death, prolonged suffering, and long term, inefficient, and expensive treatments. You bitch and moan about the waste of energy, yet don't even think about the amount of energy poured into the creation of drugs that are in the end less effective in that they often can only slow down a disease, and will require the production of that drug for years in highly energy inefficient methods.

You can also ignore the billions of dollars that are lost to insurance, malpractice, and general health care for sufferers, because of these diseases. Strictly from a monetary view, the research on these diseases is worth far, far, more, than the equivalent costs.

The next time you feel the need to apply your juvenile moral superiority on subjects you don't understand and refuse to learn about, just go ahead and slap yourself in the face. If you are going to act in a way that is the equivalent of a slap in the face to those whom you marginalize due to your lack of knowledge, you might as well make it square and do it to yourself too.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Rev to feature 12GB custom discs?

I'd like Nintendo to adopt the 1 TB discs...I forgot where I read about them but since they're practically a generation above HD-DVD/Blu-Ray, Nintendo wouldn't have to worry about piracy if it really became a standard several years down the road.

Not that anyone would NEED a whole terabyte, but I'd like for people to not make excuses about Nintendo's format never holding as much as the competition. With a full terabyte, you could easily laugh at a measley 50-100 GB or whatever it is that Blu-Ray will be.

Yeah, I know it's unlikely. Probably unnecessary and too costly to be worth it. But it would still be nice.

Highlighted the part that was practical.

So I guess that if these 1TB discs exist then they are using the Green part of the spectrum to burninate them, cool, that's good news.

It uses a combination of blue-green and red lasers to get the holographic image.

I dont see the point of not releasing the voltage of the chips im sure sony can figure this out just by using the right tools. I mean they have how many engineers working over at sonys head quarters. Im pretty sure you can just connect cables at the right place and find out how much power is flowing through.

Power!=Voltage.

As for finding the voltage that is being sent through to the cpu, if you can find the right leg on the VCPU controller, you should be able to find the voltage. I haven't really seen the motherboard of the console, so I can't say for sure where that is.

I also don't think sony really cares what voltage microsoft is running their chips at, as it has absolutely no baring on their chips.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Rev to use 512-Bit video card?
« on: September 15, 2005, 11:11:28 AM »
I've sat back for long enough reading this stuff, a comment is in order.

1) The link in question shows the r520 has a 512bit controller, but as of the moment it will have 256bit memory.

2) Perm: you are comparing vectoring (altivec in this case for the g3) with scalar. That's a no no if you want to compare performance. Certain things work quite will in vectoring, others don't. However the g3 itself is not a 128bit processor, just as a pentium4 is not a 128bit processor (though sse2 is). In the same sense the gpu is not 512bit because the memory controller is. If you want to compare altivec to sse or sse2, well that's another story.

3) x64 is a headache, and the only real benefit that has come out of it is the extra registers that were not there before. Yes there are some programs that can take advantage of it, but the vast majority have not (and probably will not).

4) Last gen: yes the n64 ran out of ram and that was a bonehead move. I honestly don't think we will see a repeat.

5) If you really want to get down to how GPUs work the 512 bit controller talk is silly unless there is a 512 bit ram to go with it. As that would require a lot of chips and a lot of layers (read: money) I don't think it will be too much of an issue. If it appears, great ATI just opened up an enormous amount of memory bandwith. If not, it's a gimmicky feature that has potential.

edit: (see below) well in that case I have no idea what perm was talkign about.

« on: September 13, 2004, 03:04:44 PM »
If that is the case, damn you got me Nice one KDR.  I thought that basically every FPS was based on the idea that if the person was in a sector and the shot was calculated to go above that sector, it was scored as a hit, else it continued until it hit something, be it boundary or wall.  Guess I was wrong on that one, but then again, I don't do too much programming.

As for talking about how doom 3 is the greatest game ever, have you actually played it?  It's fun, but it's got a bland story, and the gameplay could use some work.

Carmack is probably right, but gee not many people actually host off of their pcs.  Heck BFV servers do fine on Dual Xeon 2.4s with 2GB of memory.  Now lets compare:

Game with vehicles and 32 people, massive maps, etc.  A game with highly detailed models and up to 4 people.  I really see his point.  Carmack is a genius, not just for the doom franchise, but for the rocket stuff as well, but he is still allowed to make excuses.

I think Doom 3 is a great singple player game, I just think it could be a better game if they had gone ahead and done a complete multiplayer.

I have a solution to making the 4 player thing work.  Make an option to have 4 players max on some maps.  Add a few features, BAM you have your super throwback mode.

Yes a lot of companies do that, but is there some kind of law written in stone that says; thou must not make a good multiplayer if thy maketh a good single player?  Call of Duty has  a more than decent multiplayer, and a great single player to work.  But they are a massive minority, as you will explain.

Cheat protection for starters.  More than 4 players without having to hack up stock MP would have been nice as well... But I'm asking too much, your right, if they aren't going to charge me 50 dollars to buy the multiplayer independently from the single player, I am asking far too much.
I'm tired of playing around with ID CAN DO NO WRONG arguements.

So because they have a history of letting the burden of making a good multiplayer setup fall to the mod community, they must continue to do so?  What would be so wrong with relelasing mod tools and a complete multiplayer? Or are we still playing id can do no wrong?

It took CS for that to happen.  Ever since then, valve has been the one to beat in MP making (yes CS was a mod, but valve has built the community far more than any mod)

I find it hard to believe that you can really swallow: ITS A TRADITION! ITS OUR JOB TO MAKE SURE WE MAKE NO MULTIPLAYER! THATS YOUR JOB!

Oh I forgot about Team Arena and a port of wolfenstein 3d to gba! Wow, How could I ever doubt that they were not spending 100% of their time on those games.  Quake 4?  Quake 4 dev has barely begun.  Carmack himself said he has barely started on  it.

General Gaming / RE:PlayStation 3 will use Blue-Ray discs
« on: September 03, 2004, 04:01:06 PM »
How does PS3 push a medium?  The case is not sony wants you to feel free to upload your games to the internet.  Blu-ray needs a major backing from the dvd consortium to become the next dominent medium.  Until that happens it won't do well in the PC/movie industry.

A disc only used by a single console is not considered to be a major success.  You don't see PCs coming with drives that can read GODs just because Matsushita is producing it.

It sucked, but Valve has since then taken a lot of effort into making the MP a big focus.

General Gaming / RE: Doom 3

Yes your right, ID did produce Quake 3 Arena for DC, that obviously constituted a lot of effort.  Also allowing another company to produce RTCW obviously, took a lot of effort.

Saying they allow the modders to build the mp for them is a lame excuse for saying, we are too lazy, do it for us.

Doom 3 will make more on the engine being leased out to other companies than it will on the game profits itself.  The arguement that 'they have to make money somehow' is pretty pointless.

No the only thing that needs to go well for it infact is if playstation 3 does half as well as playstation 2 has done, then in 2 years time the burners will be a couple hundred. That doesn't even take into account if any computers use them, and it's looking like that will very well happen since alot of computer companies are already backing Blue-ray. And that doesn't count if it gets used for tv and movie media as well. So, they will definitely be cheap in 2 years.

This is what I am referring to.  You back up ifs with yes it will happen.

BTW can I see a link where Dell and HP say that they will put the burners in desktops? That's really what I would like to see.

I have already said this about 8 times.  Whoever wins out in the next movie disc standard will win the pc market as well.  It's pointless to sell a disc that is going to do you just about nothing.  DVD-RAM went down this course, so did Magneto Optical.  Continuing this debate without further proof gets this no where.

Joe saying they would start development sooner by 3-4 months by skipping MP.  Quake3 was released January 2000.  We only have to wait 4 years for their next game.  A month or two is nothing for id.
