Nintendo Gaming / New Games for only $39.99
« on: February 13, 2003, 11:17:32 PM »
I was browsing EBgames and noticed a growing trend among upcoming Gamecube titles. It seems that a lot of preorder games are selling for $39.99, $10 less than most new games sell for. There are even a few games you can preorder for even less than that. It made sense that RE2 and RE3 sold for $39.99 because they were older ports that were not enhanced (many would aruge they should sell for $19.99), but these games I saw are brand new.

The bad news, of course, is that most of these titles suck. Out of all of them the only two I'll probably end up buying are Ikaruga and Rayman 3, but it's nice to save $20 ($10 on each game).

In other news I decided to make this purchase this evening from EBgames:
$24.99   Pikmin - Preowned
$24.99   Super Smash Brothers Melee - Preowned
$9.99   Hunter: The Reckoning
Subtotal:            $59.97
Total Discount:          -$10.00 (20% off preowned games)
Shipping:            $4.99
Total:            $54.96

Nintendo Gaming / the "other" big cel-shaded game

I've read that P.N. 03 is the ONLY Capcom 5 title coming out in 2003. The other four are all expected in 2004.

Don't thank me. LiveGame scanned them all, I just fixed his links so you could click on them.

I've been a good little gamer and have stayed far away from all possible spoilers, including any literature that would confirm my suspicions that a couple characters will be included in the storyline. I still have no idea if my assumptions are correct or not, and I don't plan on finding out until I play the game. This pamphlet was distributed to everyone who preorderd TWW, so I figured it was safe to read. They give a little bit of info on some of the new faces, but they don't give much of the storyline away. I've sheltered myself from spoilers so well I'm expecting the storyline to completely shock me.

Nintendo Gaming / Metroid Prime 2
« on: February 10, 2003, 01:48:43 PM »
I understand the fears some have of another Metroid title coming out for the Cube, but I do not agree that it will be a bad thing. Metroid Prime is an amazing achievement. For Retro to use the same engine to continue it's excellence is perfectly fine with me. If anyone else other than Retro Studios was making it, I'd object. If they drastically change the game design, I'll object. Otherwise it's almost like we're getting the next level in the Metroid legacy. MP2 will be like Majora's Mask to OoT. I don't think releasing more games in a series makes them any less 'special,' because, like the Zelda series, you can group the games by console so that they're less like games and more like chapters to an unfolding story.

Yeah, I think Retro Studios developing another Metroid title for GCN is a good thing.

Nintendo Gaming / GIFTPIA is going to ROCK
« on: February 10, 2003, 01:41:05 PM »
Is Giftpia supposed to be somewhat like Animal Crossing? Or is it more kin to a standard RPG? It looks like something I'd want to check out, but I already own AC and plan to buy AC2 as soon as it comes out. I'm not sure I really need any more games of that kind.

Nintendo Gaming / Drought? What drought?
« on: February 10, 2003, 01:37:09 PM »
Glad to see my ramblings made some sense. There's certainly a catch-22 when it comes to quality video games: You can never afford all the games you want to play, and even if you could you'd never find the time to play them all. I think most gamers fall into one of these two categories. The exception of course would be people who either want virtually no games (extremely picky gamers), or people with lots of time on their hands and lots of cash to spend on games. I think for those specific types of people going multi-platform would be a good idea. I admit I'd LOVE to be able to play Panzer Dragoon Orta and Halo, but buying an Xbox just for those two games would take time and money away from my Gamecube games. If I don't have to time/money to finish all the quality titles in the GC library I don't have a good reason to go buy an Xbox. This is me reasoning when people criticize me for being a 'Nintendo fanboy' because I have no interest in other consoles.

Nintendo Gaming / Drought? What drought?
« on: February 09, 2003, 01:08:30 AM »
I was just reading a thread on a different forum where a Gamecube owner was complaining about a lack of titles. The idea that there’s not enough quality games on this system is extremely foreign to me. I admit I’m relatively new to the GC lifestyle (having gotten my own last December), but from where I’m sitting it seems like there’s so much to go around I’ll never have time to finish it all.

I’m a peculiar situation gaming-wise since I’m a college student with no job (maximum free time), and because of scholarships I have a sizable income to blow on entertainment. Since getting the Cube I’ve bought nearly all the games ranked near the top of GameRankings through internet sites and auctions. Surprisingly I didn’t go broke, and there’s still a handful of games I wouldn’t mind owning.

I was able to afford all these great games, but I feel like I’ll never have time to play them all. The only games I’ve put any serious time into have been Super Mario Sunshine (finished), Metroid Prime (35%), and SSX Tricky (huge high scores, but not finished). At this rate it’ll take me all year just to beat the games I already own, much less upcoming time-consuming releases like Master Quest, Skies of Arcadia Legends, and The Wind Waker.

Depending on how picky you are, if you bought every game you wanted to play you’d either run out of money or run out of time to play them. So long as you’re not one of those, “I only buy 9.0+ games” people you’re likely to fall into one of these two categories. What’s really scary is that when asked what 2003 games I’m looking forward to, I can easily blurt out 10-15 titles that I have an idea will be worthy of a buy. Where will I find time to play all those games?

Even though the Gamecube library is the smallest of the three major consoles, it’s still big enough to keep me perpetually gaming, perhaps even after Gamecube’s demise. I don’t think I’ve met a person who genuinely starved for a good GC title.

Nintendo Gaming / Ikaruga Hype Thread

I plan on buying this game. My only hesitation comes from hearing how difficult it is. I'm not sure if I'm a good enough gamer to fully appreciate a game like this. Of those of you who have played Ikaruga already, by what other games can I estimate the skill level required to enjoy it?

Nintendo Gaming / multi-disc games?
« on: February 08, 2003, 10:41:56 AM »
I don't think pressing extra discs is $1 each. The figure I've always heard was $0.20, which is still a large number when you multiply it by 500,000.

Nintendo Gaming / Need to prove maturity! *_*
« on: February 08, 2003, 10:39:54 AM »
My 11-year-old sister wanted me to let her play my copies of RE and ED and I told her no. If that stuff freaks me out it'd give a little kid nightmares for weeks. I think if you're a little kid your parents are doing you a favor. If you're a teenager you probably need to sell some drugs or something so you can afford to buy the games yourself. If your parents find out tell them because they wouldn't let you play the video games you want so you resorted to drugs.

Nintendo Gaming / The Wind Waker to recieve "unprecedented" score from EGM.
« on: February 06, 2003, 10:26:25 PM »
If someone's claiming it's "unprecedented" probably just means they're giving it straight tens. If I recall correctly EGM has three people review the game, and finding three people in the same room who dislike TWW is a rarity. I'm expecting 10, 9.5, 10 or something along those lines.

STORY: ...a small planet...strange...telescope...It looks as though...device...But the...a planet...entombed...

Just going from the clues they left us it definitely seems like a Sci-Fi style game. Most terrestrial bound games don't make reference to small planets and telescopes, so I expect space travel.

Nintendo Gaming / This Zoonami Exclusive Game
« on: February 05, 2003, 10:18:49 PM »
The 'rumours' page tells us that they're definitely NOT working on a FPS or a racing game (unless they openly lied about it). How can a game developer keep their work so secret? Someone in England needs to find Zoonami's place of business and go look in the window. It seems like it'd be difficult to keep the development of an entire GC-caliber game a complete mystery.

General Gaming / Nintendo Nexus - Nintendo's Next Console???
« on: February 05, 2003, 08:24:57 AM »
The techincal specs are impressive, heh. The photoshopper seems to have crossed a Cube with the N64. Looks nice. The faker also kept the 3 inch discs, which is surprising. Is the "Blue Ray" technology he (or she) claims real or made-up? I wouldn't be surprised if next-gen discs hold 12 Gigs, even at 3 inches.

Seems like the GCN has an overabundance of futuristic racing games. Why can't companies start making realistic racers? F-Zero is all the Nintendo crowd needs.

Nintendo Gaming / Will Zelda: Wind Waker break sales records?
« on: February 04, 2003, 01:13:14 PM »
Ready for some highly exaggerated fuzzy math that makes Zelda: TWW look like the second coming of Christ? Thought so.

Right now at  GameFaqs.com they have a poll about whether or not visitors to the site have preordered TWW. As of this post 34,561 have voted. When you take out the 10,865 visitors who don't have a Gamecube system, that leaves you with 23,696 Gamecube owners. Of those people 9,513 say they've already preordered. That's approximately 40%. When we take into account that there are approximately 3,260,000 Gamecube owners in America (whom I assume make up the majority of gamefaqs visitors) to can determine that if the 40% preorder rate holds true for them all, Zelda will sell 1,304,000 copies on preorder alone. If this number seems really, really high it's because it is. I don't think any game has ever surpassed the platinum mark before even being released.

You see, people who visit sites like gamefaqs are more likely to keep up to date on the video game industry than are the 3.26 million Gamecube owners. This means they're not as likely to preorder, perhaps because they're unaware of the preorder bonus disc. At least some of those Gamecube owners are also people who rarely buy or play games anymore as well. So I don't have any faith in these numbers I've thrown around, but it makes you think, doesn't it? This game has the potential to break some preorder records and maybe even some overall sales records.

Now that it's only $9.99 for a brand new copy at www.ebgames.com I think people might buy it.

Rayman 3 is a good choice for a NGC time exclusive, especially for all those platform-loving PS2 and Xbox owners who wish they could play Mario. Maybe this'll be the proverbially straw that will break their camel's back. Or maybe they'll just wait for it to come out on their system.

We as a gaming community need to be more vocal in dispelling Xbox's "exclusive" myths. Is Panzer Dragoon Orta a true exclusive or a time exclusive?

Xbox loses $380 million for Microsoft

It's amazing how well Xbox can do over the holidays yet still lose so much money. Still, such losses are only a ding in the Microsoft Corporation. Nintendo may have had more modest sales, but at least they're not losing hundreds of millions of dollars.

Minneapolis? Are there a lot of video game conventions there?

I live smack dab in the middle of Texas, so Austin, Houston, and Dallas are all within two hours of my apartment. I have a digital camera and a modicum of writing ability. I understand your need for staff-members in those specific areas, but if you ever need a Texan on the staff, well, I'll probably read it on the site.
