TalkBack / Re: Mighty No. 9 Out Spring 2015
« on: June 01, 2014, 04:30:00 PM »
On the other hand, it's kind of cool to contribute to these projects.  Sometimes, it does make you feel as if you are the part of something, even if it's just a very small part.  There are several kickstarter games that should be making their way to Wii U in 2015.

I'm happy that I contributed to Mighty No. 9, though there was no doubt that this one would get funded ; there was only the question of how many fund-raising stretch goals it would smash.

This game looks awesome, and the bosses that they've reavled via the kickstarter look like they have a ton of personality.  I'm really looking forward to this one.

I'm enjoying these!  The fadeout at the end was great; you have a great sense of humor, sir.   Keep them coming, Curtis! :)

TalkBack / Re: No Wii U or 3DS Games from Ubisoft at E3 2014
« on: May 23, 2014, 01:46:17 AM »
It's a shame.  I may be mistaken, I had thought that Ubi had already given indication that they weren't planning to put any more development efforts into the Wii U.  The lack of 3DS support is a surprise, though.

I agree that introducing new console hardware at this point would be counterproductive.  As Phil says, it would destroy consumer faith.  Also, the intial sales and subsequent price drops of the 3DS and Wii U, Nintendo has already taught me that it doesn't really pay to be an early adopter of their systems anymore.   Unless the new system was amazing, we have no reason to believe it would sell any better at this point.  Similarly, if Nintendo introduced new hardware at this point, third parties would have no compelling reason to suddenly jump on board again.   The support has been more or less declining for three system generations now, and many of the the reasons for it go back even further.

I didn't purchase my Wii U until the Wind Waker bundle came out, but I've enjoyed my time with the system.   If major third parties aren't going to support the system any more, at the very least I've got a whole load of kickstarter indie games to look forward to going into 2014-2015.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo France Rep: Smash Bros. Wii U Uses NFC
« on: May 22, 2014, 09:33:28 PM »

Something tells me...this is the reason why Smash Bros is pushed back until Winter.  I bet Nintendo wanted this game as a summer release, but then decided to add this new strategy into the game.

So the question is what can we expect from these NFCs?  How about 1-3 real miniature trophy packs.  Perhaps with 2 new assist trophies and 1 new character and level?  Sounds unlikely, perhaps, but SOME of the new characters could just be modifications to existing characters.

For example:

Luigi with a full Luigi's Mansion move set.
Doctor Mario with pills floating different than fireballs
Wolf, Falco...ect being Fox clones are a good idea for figures.

It would be an interesting way to handle downloadable content, because you can get a figurine, charge more, and have parents feel they are getting tricked into in-app like purchases.

Right now I should think that the main purpose of the figurines would be for transferring character-specific data (like the sticker-attributes in Brawl) to other Wii U consoles.

I don't mind if they have character or stage DLC tied to the figurines if there will be an alternate way to purchase it in-game; I have enough clutter around my house and I'm way past the point where I want to have lying around.

Clearly this thread demonstrates why game reviewers are among history's greatest monsters.

Seriously, though, I've never really understood why people get emotionally invested in a review to the point where they feel it necessary to attack the integrity of the reviewer.   Given that a good bit of the criticism of the review has gone in this direction, I don't blame the staff for defending Daan and Neal.   I love games as much as the next person, but among the myriad of things that I could choose to get upset about in this world, game reviews are pretty much at the bottom of the list.

For the record, I think I'm probably going to really enjoy this game in spite of its shortcomings.  I'm not in love with their decisions about the Battle Mode.   I haven't enjoyed the battles in any of the games since the N64 days;  I don't think that it's been well-executed since that time, sadly.   If this is the direction that they are going with it, at this point I probably wouldn't miss it if they eschewed the mode all together.   What does appeal to me about MK8 is the design of the race tracks; the themes are largely the same, but the tracks just seem very creative this time around.   I thought the track design in MK Wii was okay, and I'm probably in the minority in thinking that the tracks in Double Dash were just boring, but something about the design of the MK8 tracks appeals to me.  Maybe I'll feel differently when I experience the game, but I'm still pretty hyped about it right now.

I saw this a few days ago and the concept interested me enough to back the game.  I seriously need to avoid visiting kickstarter.

More often than not, most of the single player events in Mario Kart games since 64 (with the possible exception o f MK DS) haven't captured my interest for all that long.   I even got bored with MK 7 after a few weeks, and I eventually sold it.

I enjoy MK Wii more than most did mostly because it is a game that my wife and my children all want to play together; it's one of their favorite things to do.  It's also probably the reason why the Wii U version will be a long-standing hit with us as well.   I imagine that if I primarily played it by myself, I would get bored with it pretty quickly.

Here's hoping the live stream goes a little better than it did last year.  The subsequent twitter meltdown was entertaining to read, though.

It's unfortunate that we'll probably never get the opportunity to play DQ X in the west.  It's sad (at least to me), but we'll probably never see another Dragon Quest sequel return to a Nintendo home console.

I was as excited as any other Star Wars fan when all the EU stuff started surfacing in the 90s, starting with the Timothy Zahn novels, but from the very beginning you could tell that it would probably have been pushed to the side if another movie trilogy had been made.

I have to ask, though?  How did the Clone Wars TV series invalidate the KOTOR games?  Didn't they take place in two entirely different time periods?

Hero Quest: So you want to be a Hero? (aka Quest for Glory 1 for you remake people)

I loved the Quest For Glory series--a classic Sierra adventure game with RPG elements.  I'm not sure, but it might have been the first RPG game I ever played.    I played the VGA remake of the first game, and it singularly responsible for teaching me the value of terrible puns.   I liked the idea of being able to develop a character's abilities just by taking him out and practicing various skills.  I think Quest For Glory II: Trial by Fire was my favorite of the bunch, and AGD Interactive produced a nice fan remake of it a couple of years ago.

The cheapest way is too visit the bay.

Unfortunately it isn't streaming on Netflix.
It could be on Hulu, but you would still have commercials.
And it's not streaming for free under Amazon Prime.
It's on CBS's site and I think its on Hulu Plus if memory serves.  Can't go back to even the beginning of this season if I'm remember right.

The online streaming at CBS and Hulu plus only started a few months ago, I think.  For some reason, for the longest time Warner Brothers didn't license the show for streaming (even via CBS's site) or purchase online, which is kind of backwards when you consider the show's premise.    We cut cable before season 2 ended, and it was frustrating to discover that I couldn't easily legally watch the episodes after they aired.

That being said, it's my favorite current show right now.

TalkBack / Re: Retro Studios Has Started Work on Mystery Project
« on: March 06, 2014, 03:34:46 PM »
I'm more or less fine with the Donkey Kong games, and, in general, I'm glad they brought the series back.  I'm also ready for them to move on, but I can't help but feel like we'll get a third Kong game from them at some point.  I would hope that they would get to work on something entirely new, but that probably won't be the case.

My random prediction will be something from the F-Zero franchise.

It is sort of difficult to get excited about this announcement when you realize that it might take a least another year to hear something concrete about it.

66
Yep.  I got this via a Steam sale sometime last year, and it's currently on my backlog of shame.  I'd consider double-dipping for a version that I could play on the Gamepad.

67
It's an interesting choice.  Since I haven't played the 3DS game, I'm willing to give this a chance for $20.

Nice sale!  I picked up Runner, Toki Tori 2 and Gianna Sisters.  I hate that the Gianna Sisters game doesn't play audio when playing it on the gamepad; you'd think that would be a relatively easy fix.

Too bad.  I wouldn't have minded seeing a Tetra verison of Zelda with this power.  The inclusion of Zelda here just seems odd.

I would have thought that Chrom and Lucina would have made more sense.   It would have been a good opportunity to get another female protagonist in the game.

I'm also a fan of Person of Interest and mainly started watching it because I like both Michael Emmerson (Finch) and Jim Caviezel (Reese).  I was also afraid it would get cancelled early on in season one, but I think they really turned a corner after they introduced Elias for the first time.  It's currently my favorite show.

It's a little cheesy, but this scene from season 2 where Finch discusses the meaning of Pi while undercover as a  teacher  is still one of my favorite PoI moments:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDWpb5b1qVc

As far as Batman analogies go, why wouldn't Fusco, especially season 1 Fusco, simply be Harvey Bullock?

For whatever reason, I always associate the art style in Wind Waker game with that of Samurai Jack (at least a little).  Probably mostly because that series was going on at the time that this game was released.  It sort of had the same storybook look.
