Looks like a well-done spiritual sequel to Affordable Space Adventures.

Would you expand on "still feels like a PS3 game"? To me that means lengthy installs, long load times, controller de-syncs and distracting visual/audio jitters.

The Assassin's Creed and Cuphead costumes are cool. As for Byleth, meh. It would be nice to see more established, western-developed characters from games that have been staples of Nintendo systems over the years; Rayman, Shantae, Sub-Zero, Fulgore, even Crash Bandicoot would fit in.

I believe the one version lets you catch Bellsprout while the other version lets you catch Oddish.

Yes, I remember now, and one version shows real blood when you uppercut your opponent but the other has sweat instead. Heh, 90s games, am I right?

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Best of the 3DS eShop: 2011 Releases & 3D Classics
« on: January 13, 2020, 09:04:58 AM »
Of this selection, I've only played VVVVVV and Pushmo. Both really good games and at least worth their listing price.

VVVVVV is a  twitchy, difficult, action-puzzle adventure with quick restarts if you die, so the frustration is short-lived and it's easy to keep trying even though you will die often; great music too. Pushmo is a cutesy, leisurely-paced puzzle game that is very satisfying to work through. The music is nice and the art style is very plushy and fluffy; reminds me of Kirby a little.

I have been experiencing some of this same longing to return to 3DS and catch what I've missed on the eShop. However, I put more effort into the Wii U. I feel the urgency is greater there, as several higher-profile games have already been delisted (see delistedgames.com for a reference) and Nintendo is likely to shut down the Wii U eShop much sooner than the 3DS, given that the console has been discontinued for years and it never had much of a user base, to begin with.

The issue of online marketplaces shutting down is not as much of a problem on other consoles that have more homogenized user interfaces. But there will not likely be another portable or home console system that will be able to replicate the experiences that the Wii U and 3DS provided. From dual-screen interfaces to MiiVerse integration, Streetpass and Spotpass, to every single system menu having genuinely good custom music tracks, these systems are taking a lot with them when they finally bite the dust. Even the online marketplaces have music that changed with the season! Why did the Switch have to give all of this up?

Anyway... lots of good eShop stuff to go back to. Thank you for bringing up this topic.

Happy New Year! Finally, we are in the year of the Nintendo 64 Mini Classic! Right?

Lots of good input. It seems, based on the feedback I'm reading here, than Nintendo felt the need to add some fluff to the Switch remake in order to make it seem more justified than a simple visual/audio overhaul would have been, especially at that ridiculous price point. Yet they also felt a conviction to stay so true to the original vision that the additions are sort of half assed so as not to stray from it too far. This alone pushes me toward the DX version.

But yeah, I can see the value of playing a mix of different versions and letting that add to the discussion. Thanks everyone for your two cents.

A group of friends and I are discussing doing a Link's Awakening sort of retrospective-style group playthrough, but we are not settled on which version, or if we would get a similar experience if we played different versions. I've only ever played DX, and the others have not played any of them.

How different are they, really? And would we be too out of sync if some of us played the GB/GBC and others played the Switch version? Is the Switch version just like a fresh coat of paint?

General Chat / Re: who likes hot sauce?
« on: January 08, 2020, 04:21:03 PM »

If you like spicy foods/sauces, what brands do you currently enjoy and what recipes do you use it with?

I like Sriracha on pizza, potato salad, and pasta with Alfredo sauce. Tobasco for omelets and hash browns. Crystal cayenne pepper sauce on just about anything else. Frank's Red Hot has great flavor but lacks kick.

Partners in Time was an awful grind and wasted opportunity for cool time travel stuff (like Ocarina of Time, Radiant Historian, etc.). I just played through it for the first time. The final boss -which is actually one boss, then a save point, then another boss immediately after with two forms - took me literally over an hour and a half of solid battle time and about 50-60 of my team attack items. I'm not exaggerating! I was timing myself because I had heard how long it was and didn't believe it. I don't understand how people liked the game so much when it launched. The best thing about it was a cameo by Fawful.

This is karma for that game and making me fight that boss.

This is unfortunate. I think I'll hold out for Baldur's Gate then.

Thanks, Steefosaurus. This is great!

I love the retroactive feature of the podcast and I think it would be great if there was a little page devoted to it, maybe with just a list of past retroactives, what's coming next, and maybe a TalkBack section for votes and discussion of upcoming options. Really, though, a list of links would be great if nothing else.

Nintendo Gaming / Help me choose my next DS/3DS RPG
« on: August 10, 2019, 11:28:17 PM »
I'm thinking Fire Emblem, Alliance Alive, Stella Glow, Nostalgia, Mario and Luigi, 999, The World Ends With You, I don't really know. Can you all give me some ideas based on your experiences? Virtual Console and eShop digital only titles are included. Basically whatever I can play on my N3DSXL. Thanks.

Are there any other games with similar cart failures?

I had a physical copy of Puzzle and Dragons that locked up every time I got to the tutorial battle with the two goombas. I updated the game and the 3DS and it didn't change anything. I assume the cartridge memory had a defect because it worked fine when I tried another cartridge of the same game.

My own speculation is that there is a software bug if this problem is restricted to the first print of PQ. 3DS carts aren't made for any specific game. They are blanks that are programmed with ROMs and labeled with a sticker (probably). Something about the ROM is not right I'm guessing. It may not be related to the firmware version but to something less obvious like time/date or the presence of certain files or other software on the 3DS memory or SD card, or there could be a memory conflict in the RAM because of home screen themes or whatever. It would be nice to know exactly what the issue is.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What does your 3DS activity log look like?
« on: May 03, 2019, 07:28:19 PM »
Cool thread idea. I'll post mine when I get a chance.
Edit: I got a chance. See below.

Playtime:
1 Bravely Default 23:39
2   Spirit Tracks       6:36
3   Tales of the Abyss 6:18
4   Super Smash Bros.  4:40
5   Link Between Worlds   2:55
6   Steamworld Dig 2    2:50
7   Age of Empires: Age of Kings 2:32
8   Dragon Fantasy: Volumes of Westeria 2:28
9   Codename STEAM 2:23
10  Xenoblade Chronicles 3D  2:15

Avg. Playtime per session

1 Codename STEAM 2:23
2  Age of Empires: Age of Kings 1:16
3 My Nintendo Picross Twilight Princess 1:05
4  Steamworld Heist 0:59
5 Lego Star Wars Complete 0:58
6 Spirit Tracks  0:49
7 Bravely Default 0:45
8  Link Between Worlds 0:43
9  Tales of the Abyss 0:42
10 Shantae (GBC) 0:42

Play Frequency

1 Bravely Default 31
2 Super Smash Bros 15
3 Xenoblad Chronicles 3D 10
4 Tales of the Abyss 9
5 Spirit Tracks 8
6 Puzzle Quest Challenge of the Warlords 7
7 Donkey Kong Country 3; 6
8 Dragon Fantasy: Volumes of Westeria 6
9 Steamworld Dig 2; 6
10 Super Mario 3D Land 6

I probably spent significantly more time on Spirit Tracks, but I go back and forth between 3DS and Phat DS for nostalgia reasons. Yes, I'm nostalgic for the ugly, dimly-lit, clunky original DS that looks like something you'd see lying around inside of a Jawa Sandcrawler. Btw, this is my second 3DS, and the Activity Log did not transfer over, unfortunately. If it did, there would have been a lot more time on the original Steamworld Dig and Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords.

Nintendo Gaming / Question about Wii eShop games on Wii U
« on: May 03, 2019, 07:13:46 PM »
When you buy a Wii game on the eShop, it downloads to the Wii U memory. But does it also save there, or does it save to the Wii Mode memory like a disc-based Wii game would? I'm asking because I want to be able to move my save games to the SD card so I can continue a Skyward Sword game on a Wii after starting it on my Wii U with the eShop version.

General Gaming / Re: Kingdom Hearts first impressions thread.
« on: June 20, 2018, 06:09:06 AM »
Kingdom hearts is 10% mediocre gameplay and 90% all-these-things-i-like-are-talking-to-each-other-in-the-same-game-this-is-awesome!

I have no regrets about enjoying KH1, then losing interest half way through KH2 and never going back to the series. Even after watching these pretty KH3 trailers, I get that bad taste in my mouth from all the wish washy plot tidbits and irritating anime character interactions.

"Ventus" sounds like a filthy body part.

I'm looking into options for time travel so I can fling the GameCube controller design into Mount Doom where it f**king belongs and replace it with something that actually functions (Classic Controller Pro, anyone?) so no.

I get it. It's like Nintendo decided to  rip off the Xbox controller, but they wanted to just botch it up a little so it wouldn't LOOK like a rip off. But those damned analog triggers make it essential for several GameCube games, therefore I must have them. But good damn that D-pad for real. How are you going to invent the D-pad, improve on it over a couple generations, and then invent and release the worst ever iteration of it after finally getting the anaolog stick right!?

22
And Purple!

Did you mean "indigo"? And, yes, those character-based controllers are badass, especially the Metal Mario one. However, I find the nunchuk to be the best analog stick for Brawl/SSBWiiU, due to its smaller range of travel, and the Wii Classic controller is better and more comfortable overall for Wii/Wiiware/VC games. So, not really interested in anything that doesn't have a GameCube dongle.

That DK controller looks like $h!&, for real. They should have gone with the banana peel design from the N64 days, and given Wario a purple controller.

23
So, the most exciting news lately for me is the announcement of new 1st party GameCube controllers! I have been using my one GC controller for both my GC and N64 (with Raphnet adapter) backlogs, and I've been getting worried about what I will do when the controller wears out, or if I need more for multiplayer games. New GameCube controllers are like $100 on eBay! So yeah, this announcement is the best ever, and they are only going to be $30! Now if they would only make more N64 controllers...

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 89: When I'm N64
« on: June 18, 2018, 10:52:33 PM »
Love the episode! And I want to add my own N64 faves:
Star Wars Ep.1 Racer (endless fun!)
Command and Conquer 64 (short and limited, but fun, with great graphics for the time)
StarCraft 64 (an imperfect port but a great template for RTS controls on console)
Shadows of the Empire (I think this was the last generation when high difficulty due to poor design was appreciated and even loved in spite of the god awful flaws)

Another thing I wanted to touch on that seems to get skipped over, on the topic of the oddball Nintendo 64 hardware design choices: I think a big motivator for Nintendo go with cartridges over discs is the low cost of the console itself. The only moving parts on the whole thing were a button, a switch, and the dust flaps over the cartridge slot. N64 was basically a circuit board covered in plastic, and was absolutely cheaper to make than any disc system, and easy for Nintendo to make a profit on. Meanwhile Sony had to pay engineers for more robust piracy protection in addition to the sensors, laser, motors, door mechanism, and extra circuitry required for optical disc reading in the PS1, and the two systems were sold at exactly the same price at the time of the N64 launch. Nintendo probably could have sold the '64 at close to $99 and still have broken even.
