Title: I am making a game, Super Push Adventure!
Post by: Phil on February 18, 2015, 07:17:29 PM
UPDATE: Super Push Adventure is ready to download for free for PC users!
http://superphillipl32.itch.io/super-push-adventure

I've been working on my first major release for about two years now. It's been on and off again when college and my mental stability allow. It's called Super Push Adventure, and it's a game where you push boulders to create paths to the goal, avoid enemies and obstacles, and solve complex puzzles.

Here are some screenshots:

Good job. Now use Djykstra's Algorithm to make the game solve its own puzzles.

I really dig this "Chip's Challenge" style of puzzle game for whatever reason, so I would definitely check this out. Very much enjoyed my recent experience with Adventures of Lolo on VC.

Have you every played that old DOS game with the Indiana-Jones-Esque "parody" main character? It was a boulder moving game, but super hard with a lot of context complexity (surrounding enemies with boulders turns every boulder surrounding it into diamonds, thus opening paths; you had to find a secret baldness curse to get your hat to fall off at intervals, which then acted like a stationary boulder (necessary to complete the game)). I have never been able to remember the title of the game and haven't been able to find it with basic Google searches.

Thanks so much, you two! (Not so much Brandogg, since the good job looked sarcastic.) :P

As for the game you're trying to think of, MagicCow, I can't help, but it sounds absolutely hilarious! I did grow up on Chip's Challenge at my dad's house growing up, so I'm sure I've taken inspiration from the game-- even subconsciously!

Ha, after having tried this a number of times in the past, this time Google comes up with this as the first result:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paganitzu

I never knew it by that name, and it's flashing back to me as having thought it was called Romancing the Stone, same as a VHS we had when I was kid. And apparently I only had the freeware portion of the game (makes sense that this was the case as it was published by Apogee back in the day). Could be good research.

Anyhow, I'd be happy to beta test it for you. Haven't done it before, but have worked some years ago designing puzzles for a puzzle palette platform.

Thanks for offering! I have some nearby friends helping with playtesting as well. Feel free to send me a PM and I'll give you the link to the debug version. If you have any questions, shoot them my way.  :)

Sokoban lives!

I wouldn't mind giving it a spin and doing some QA in the process, Phil!

And yes, Sokoban is the true genesis of this genre. Chip McCallister and Alabama Smith ain't got **** on warehouse keepers in Japan, baby!

on an unrelated tangent, anybody ever play realms of chaos? 2D hack n' slash platformer that was originally going to be a sequel to Peganitzu but then... for some reason becaome a 2D Hack n' Slash platformer. probably the last one Apogee released under that name before they renamed themselves 3D Realms.

Sent you a PM, ClexYoshi. Thanks!

MagicCow, let me know if you'd me to PM you with the link to the debug version.

It wasn't sarcasm. Just remember if you're using the same engine that the old demo used, then it doesn't play nicely with Windows 8 and Microsoft recommends not trying to make it work.

I was hoping the ":P" showed I was kidding about the sarcasm thing. You'll learn my humor soon enough, Brandogg!  :D  I haven't had any folks with issues with Windows 8, but I'm still testing with other folks.

I loved Paganitzu! That was a classic for me back in the Apogee days of DOS gaming. That takes me back.

Good luck finishing the game, Phil. Looks like it is coming along great.

Hey all. Would anyone be interested in playtesting? Just to check for bugs, give feedback on level design, dialogue, music, what you liked/didn't like, etc?

I'd love to have someone who isn't a personal friend to playtest so I can get a more unbiased opinion. :)

Don't think I'm ignoring you guys. I am just getting a near final build ready that has new fixes to some problems/bugs my programmer and I found. Sorry for the wait. Between life, school, my blog, Khush always bothering me for the Safe Word game (:P), and everything else, things have been busy!

Development is officially over for Super Push Adventure! Yay!

Don't worry that you guys didn't get to playtest. I had a bunch of folks do so to help out, so you might as well wait for the official release! :)

Probably Friday! I'll have it on http://itch.io/ with its own page and maybe even a link to the soundtrack, too. It's going to be free, but people can pay what they want. No worries. I won't post my SOB story to persuade people to pay! lol

I just started playing it, nicely done! Do you have source code at all or is it all done with a game maker engine? If you have source code I would be willing to try to port it to the DS or Android or something.
Title: Re: I am making a game, Super Push Adventure!
Post by: Phil on March 28, 2015, 03:53:59 PM
Thanks, Brandogg! Yeah, it's all done in Game Maker, but I do have a development friend here in the STL area that is willing to help out with Android and IOS development since I've no clue on those platforms.

I hope you'll post some impressions, Brandogg, whether good or bad! Maybe it'll get others to try out the game!
Title: Re: I am making a game, Super Push Adventure!
Post by: BranDonk Kong on March 28, 2015, 04:27:10 PM
Well to be honest it's very similar to any Boulder Dash-type game (I don't mean that in any bad way or anything), and a friend and I actually worked on one for a school project last year, so even without the source code I could probably put together a similar version on Android.

Post by: Phil on March 28, 2015, 04:42:29 PM
How far have you gotten in the game, Brandogg? The first area, Training Grounds, is very traditional, but later areas introduce new mechanics and gimmicks. I'm not familiar with Boulder Dash, but I did look it up, and yeah, pretty much the same idea starting off. I'll definitely think about an Android version. Thanks!

There is also the official soundtrack for Super Push Adventure that is also free like the game the music is featured in!

Now that you're a big time game publisher, the question is: how much are you going to bribe the games media? They're expecting a kickback you know.

I like the commentary between levels, it elevates the game. Well written compared to many games too.

Thanks! I hope the levels are challenging enough for you without becoming frustrating. My older brother has been playing, and he's been enjoying it. He's a harsh critic, too. heh Well, at least when it comes to ME. *nods*

I made what's essentially an overhead view of the world map for my new game I'm working on. This won't be featured in the game, as each area is interconnected similar to The Legend of Zelda or Pokemon.

But your lack of real-time global illumination knocks a point off my score.

Our local development community had a demo event, and my game was one of the ones selected for it. I got to show off Super Push Adventure to a lot of people, and I took some pics of the event. However, this one is my favorite. It shows a boy, about 6 or 7, enjoying my game. Makes all the hard work worth it, I think.
