More Spidey-related Sony news from the leaked emails...
http://www.spidermancrawlspace.com/2015/04/19/sonys-amazing-spider-man-franchise-plans-part-one-the-sequels/

So glad Marvel got back infront of this one. Sony didn't know what it wanted, or how to execute it properly.

Another email has leaked, this one from Amy Pascal

and good thing Marvel and Feige got the deal they did.... Sony had some delusions towards Spider-Man as a franchise. It's a shame they couldn't agree on a reasonable price to sell/buy outright

Wow. So, they thought the Sinister Six movie was gonna hit $2 billion?!  And bringing back Toby Macguire would also be $2 billion?!

LOL

Marvel should have gave them $2B, and let them make 3 animated movies in a 7 year span to just get the rights back for good.

Maybe even throw in a depreciating participation on the next Spidey trilogy, just to ease the separation.
I'm sure Sony would have bit on that.

But to answer the question directly.... they thought Sinister Six, after the declining returns and a "net gain of $35M" on ASM2, was somehow going to reach $2B

They also planned 7 more rapid-fire Spidey movies, which included an Emma Stone as Carnage and a Tobey vs Andrew movie, to finally make it to $2B in movie profits off the Spidey License (that's how I read it atleast - total of 12 spidey movies), and they thought that sharing the license with Marvel and letting them do all the work while they sit back and profit I guess benefited Marvel more than them?

So pretty damn stupid.
Hopefully if Venom bombs, they are smart enough to just sit back and let Marvel do what they do, or just take the quick cash and release the license with some limited time exclusive profit sharing.

I seen some questioning of the legitimacy of this email.... apparently it had to be after the initial leak.

But assuming that last part is true, and Marvel is doing this through 2020, where they then have the option to pay $2B to get the rights back in full, then it makes sense why Sony is quick to push out all these spidey-less movies, such as Venom, Silver & Black, Kraven, as they too are on a time limit to milk the franchise, which is also why they don't care that Spidey ain't in them.

how they they they get to $12B in profit in that time, I have no idea, I'm not even sure how they get to $12B in gross, much less profits, but that's not my field of expertise.....

This could also be why Sony and Marvel technically have 3 pic solo Spidey deal, but supposedly the 3rd movie isn't guaranteed (Sony Option or something, iirc), and why there was only concrete plans for the first 2 movies.

If they're using that as a cumulative number, then it makes more sense, but they're clearly going for volume on diminishing returns, which is dumb business.

Well, there's already been 6 Spider-man movies, and they are no where near $6B in profit, and not that close to $6B Gross. It's right around $4.8B over 6 movies, and SMH is $10M behind the highest grossing SM film yet (SM3 = $890M). They need to average over $12B for the next 6 SM movies.

I realize this was supposedly 2 years ago, but that number is still absurd to think they were going to average $1B GROSS for each movie and just stupid if they meant $1B profit per movie. LOL
But I guess they did plan to make $2B on Sinister 6 and $2B from selling SM to Marvel.... so maybe that's all included.

I've read some of their other e-mails. Par for the course. Amy Pascal was super out of touch. They seem unreal, but not in her context.

This Venom movie looks super bad, but not so bad it will convince some rubes to sit in the seats. 2 billion seems like a good deal for Marvel. It's shitty terrible deal, but way better than one I would expect. 6 billion is a funny number, I think I said somewhere else that would be the my predicted buyout rate. Which is too much to buy for your own character.

Disney paid $4 billion each for Marvel and Lucasfilm (slightly more when adjusted for inflation). That said, $2 billion for just Spider-Man seems like an overpay. I imagine such a deal would include the rights to the previous six Spider-Man films and any other related properties like the upcoming Venom movie so it isn’t as egregious as it looks. That may explain why Sony is so adamant to **** out as many Sony Spider-verse movies as it can because more movies makes the $2 billion number more attractive though not in the way Sony thinks. Disney doesn’t care about the non-MCU movies. Disney wants Sony to stop damaging the brand with subpar content, confusing people with non-MCU Spider-Man releases, riding the coattails of Marvel Studios hard work etc. In a way, Disney would be overpaying Sony to go away.

$2B is not too much to ask for just Spider-man, even if it is just for the theatrical rights. To regain full control of Spider-man has to be extremely valuable from a marketing standpoint, and merchandise sales alone from whatever movie(s) and other media he appears in has to be worth the cost.

I know this chart is outdated, but SM makes bank

so as you said, the cost of stopping Sony from fucking up their ability to market SM and all his associated characters with movies associated to the biggest money making series ever in the MCU has to be worth that $2B alone.

edit: and I'm adding this just because it relevant, and Sony should stop trying to sabotage the franchise (stop protecting Avi Arad's job as your comic movie specialist.....). try to work WITH Marvel Studios, and not make movies that possibly limit them behind their back. Imagine how much HYPE Venom could have if not only did it get that "in collaboration with Marvel Studios" banner, instead of just "Marvel" and then you also get to use SM in costume, and not just the rumored "Peter Parker" cameo.

I just meant upon first glance $2 billion looks like too much especially given that the rest of Marvel (minus movie rights to Hulk, X-Men, and Fantastic Four etc.) is about $2.7 billion more in 2018 dollars. Once we break down what Disney would be paying for, it starts making a bit more sense. A portion of that $2 billion would be Disney “saving” the Spider-Man brand from Sony’s gross incompetence. In the long run, it’ll be worth it.

I also think Spider-man i getting the real Symbiote suite in the next movie. Sony can have their catwomen venom movie, but Marvel will move on with that by the time they get the rights back.

My prediction is that Marvel avoids the whole symbiote thing - Venom ends up being pretty good and Marvel gets the rights back to everything in 2020. They make a Venom sequel with Spider-Man in it, but this time Venom is the bad guy (at least in Spider-Man's view) up until near the end of the movie. They fight, the Symbiote gets ahold of Spider-Man for a bit before he's able to reject it finally, it goes back to Eddie and now he has the white spider logo. The 3rd Venom movie is also the 3rd Spider-Man movie and it's Maximum Carnage. MAKE THIS HAPPEN THANK YOU.

Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters..... good thing they weren't named Fony
« Reply #240 on: August 09, 2018, 02:57:04 PM »
So Sony may be aiming to make a Venom a "Hard PG-13" instead of a R rated movie.
They still have delusions that Marvel will somehow include Venom into the MCU through the use of Spider-man and other said Marvel CU characters. (Tom Holland and Spider-man is not in this movie)
Having a PG-13 rating may make that pitch easier, is their reasoning.

If Venom does well, they have a Morbius, Silver Sable, Black Cat, Silk, Kraven, and several other C/D-list character movies planned.

Silver and Black's director decided to depart, but wants to stay on as Producer for the movies being split into 2 solo movies instead.....

https://variety.com/2018/film/news/whats-next-for-the-spider-man-universe-after-venom-exclusive-1202900203/

They also refer to this series of movies as "Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters" or SUMC for short.
It's a good thing Sony wasn't actually called Fony, otherwise that abbreviation may actually say what I think they mean F-U-MC (Marvel Comics)

My biggest problem with the new Venom trailers is it elevates Topher Grace's Venom. Tom Hardy is playing that same slow character from The Drop.

Venom bites this guys head off in the trailer.... well, it cuts before we see anything happen. The question is, in the movie, do they show it?

Also Venom looks pretty disgusting.

If it's all implied like it is in the trailer than it's fine.  I just don't want to graphically see the head removed and blood and gore hosing out everywhere.
