Although I understand why the Thrii exists, even I'd be calling for drug testing if they actually sold the thing for $999.99 as it sounds like is said at 1:58.

Correction: $99.99

Ooops lol. Yea you can get the deluxe cartel smuggling edition for $999.99

Podcast Discussion / Episode 315: Nintendo Launch Alliance
« on: November 24, 2012, 09:27:09 PM »

Wii U is all the New Business we need.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/32604

For this special Thanksgiving episode, we recorded a bit early and did one long segment. The subject, of course, is Wii U. Jonny's launch system was broken, and James got his just hours before the show, but we have the power trio of Guillaume, Billy, and first-timer Ariel to deliver the goods. They dish out tons of impressions for Mario, Nintendo Land, Miiverse, and the whole setup process. Ariel also praises the Wii U version of Call of Duty: Black Ops II, while Billy tries to explain Chasing Aurora, and Guillaume marvels at Nano Assault Neo.

We want to hear about your own experiences with Wii U, so please email the show with your stories and questions about the new system. Also, be sure to check out the RFN-themed Mafia game in the forums! See you next week when things get back to quasi-normal, and maybe Jonny will have his system by then.

TalkBack / Rabbids Land Review
« on: November 23, 2012, 12:54:07 PM »

The debut of the Rabbids on the Wii U rolls the dice to make its mark.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/32592

The Rayman spinoff franchise focusing on the lovable yet not so intelligent rabbit-like Rabbids makes its way to a Nintendo console at launch once again, this time in the form of Rabbids Land. In similar fashion to the Mario Party games, Rabbids Land has players battling it out to earn the most trophies by traversing a circular amusement park-themed game board.

From the outset, players are introduced to a vividly colored and smoothly rendered atmosphere. The game starts with a simple yet visually interesting character selection process where you select which color Rabbid you wish to play as in a factory-like setting. The well-assembled art style present here remains consistent throughout the game, with the game board and mini-games pulling you into the Rabbids Land atmosphere with their cartoonish look.

In order to reach the goal with the most trophies, players use a variety of spaces on the game board. With a roll of a dice players may do things like battle one-on-one in a mini-game, answer a quiz with rivals betting against your answer’s validity, release a bonus Rabbid to help or hurt other players, and plenty of other actions that alter not only the trophy count but the game board. While the game supports up to four players, only two players (one using the Game Pad and one using a Wii Remote) are able to take part in mini-games, which tends to make the gameplay a bore for those not taking part in the festivities.

The mini-games in Rabbids Land are a two-sided coin. While some games are genius in concept and really fun to play, plenty of uninspired and repetitive ideas rear their heads. Ghosts Suck is a really good example of one mini-game done well. As a cooperative game, Ghosts Suck has the player on the GamePad look around the room, revealing ghosts with a spray that allows the player using the Wii Remote to see them on the TV and rein them in. Once the Wii Remote user captures a ghost, they then have to beam it onto the GamePad, transitioning the mini-game from two individual activities to one united task in an instant. On the opposite side of the spectrum, Cuperpillar, which has players flinging teacups from a top-down perspective at an AI-controlled caterpillar, misses the mark, marred by its incredibly slow moving cups.

While local multiplayer gameplay is clearly the focus of Rabbids Land, its two-player mini-game format lends itself well to the game’s single-player mode. Players have the option of selecting individual mini-games unlocked during Board Game mode playthroughs or by playing the main Board Game mode. AI opponents’ difficulty levels are not selectable but do seem to vary; however, the AI’s reactions do feel somewhat scripted. One of the definite pluses for solo players is that the game does not force you to watch two computer players battle in a mini-game; instead, the outcome is randomized and the game quickly moves to the next turn.

Rabbids Land provides players with a pretty solid party game experience. Its well-designed art and sound style and cohesive board game format make team outings fun. However, players looking to go it alone may find themselves yearning for higher levels of difficulty and more variety in the mini-game selection.

i really doubt people will take wii u and tv to starbucks to do the firmware update, maybe the 3DS but not wii U
outside of that good show as always

Lol I was kidding... I said that to emphasize how people without internet connection are kind of screwed :p

I just love that pink and white 3DSXL. If only I were man enough and rich enough to own it.
That was hilarious what you did with Tank! Tank! Tank!. Had to watch that part twice.
I also have an idea/suggestion about the opening. I don't want to step on your creative mojo, but I was wondering how it would look if the bubble part of the inside the bubble logo was NWR blue instead of gray. I would think that would better represent being on the inside. It's dark and colorless being outside the know, but it's awesome and colorful inside the bubble, you know? Just a thought.
This has drastically improved since you first started, way to go man!

I will definitely take that into consideration. I've been meaning to make some minor changes like shorting the intro, and fixing up colors and such. Just haven't had much time as of late. But yea thanks a lot, I love the feedback. once this Wii U madness is over and the seas calm a bit on my end, I can sit down and tackle what I've been meaning to.

Do I have to pick one up? Like it is invite by pre-order only? I already pre-ordered mine but wouldn't mind stopping by and checking out the festivities, even pick up a game (or at the least some of their cool merch). Wouldn't want to make the trip into the city just to be turned away though (lol as if there isn't anything else I could do..)

Who else is going? Maybe I'll see you there.

Both people with pre-orders and those looking to pick one up are allowed, as far as staff, I'm not sure if anyone is going.

Nintendo launches the Wii U on its own turf for a change.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32441

Nintendo is gearing up to hold its midnight console launch celebration for the Wii U at the Nintendo World Store, located in Manhattan.

The celebration will take place on November 17 from 6 p.m. to midnight, when systems will officially go on sale. Some of the festivities include Mii costumed characters, item giveaways, and a guest appearance from Nintendo President & COO Reggie Fils-Aime.

Nintendo held its past console launch celebrations for the Wii and 3DS at Toys 'R' Us and Best Buy, respectively. The Nintendo Wii U is slated to be released on November 18 in North America.

While I'm elated that they're finally doing this, am I the only one who is annoyed that the region receiving the system last gets the info first? Not sure how that makes sense... but then again... Nintendo.  :Q

Norex:

I know people were concerned about on-line multiplayer for Wii U and that's why the question was asked but what about off line?  Like for both co-op campaign and versus.  Split-screen is very important to me (the sole reason why I am getting BLOPS2 is split scr vs.) I wonder if you could tell us anything in regards to split screen.

I wish I could... problem is, we played the PC version, it was a LAN party with a bunch of PCs. 5 on 5 I believe, if I remember correctly.

Wait who seems stronger Xeno's or the men?

The Xenos, there were multiple matches going down and while everyone kept switching teams, the wins were definitely going to the Xenos way more than the Marines. Not really big though, as they have plenty of time to try and balance that out. One thing I can say, is that the multiplayer was a **** load of fun... There's nothing like being a Xenomorph, sneaking up on a human via the ceiling, jumping down, and then tearing them to shreds in like 2 seconds flat lol.

TalkBack / Transformers Prime Preview
« on: October 24, 2012, 01:45:25 PM »

Transformers are back, this time with no movies attached.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/preview/32224

Taking a departure from the usual Transformers games that usually release alongside movie counterparts, this version is an original title based on the relatively new Transformers: Prime cartoon series. This Transformers game sports a vibrantly colored cartoonish look, which looks good in its trailer.

So far not much is known about the game but here's what we have nailed down. Prime is being developed by Nowpro, a Japanese development team who has worked on such titles as Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Wii, and more notable titles like Katamari Damacy for the PS2. The plot in Transformers Prime follows Team Prime's attempt to defeat the Decepticons, who have intercepted a strange meteor which was heading towards the  Earth. Things take a turn for the worst when the Decepticons uncover an ancient power which could potentially help them destroy earth.

Aside from the main story, there will be a multiplayer battle mode which supports up to 12 players at once. Activision still has not disclosed whether or not this mode will be playable over the internet or restricted to local play. In the game's latest trailer, we can see both Autobots and Decepticons transform into their alternate forms, although it's still not clear if we will be able to do this at will.

Transformers Prime is due for release in North America on October 30for Wii, DS, and 3DS. A Wii U version will also become available at launch.

TalkBack / Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone Review
« on: October 23, 2012, 02:59:01 PM »

This art has more than meets the eye.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/32215

As a person who has struggled to draw a passable happy face all my life, I had my work cut out for me with Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone on 3DS. From Battalion Wars developer Headstrong Games, Art Academy fortunately proved to be a shining example of how learning software should be done. Less a game and more a tool, Art Academy takes you through the paces of learning how to draw using various painting/drawing utensils and materials with simple and short step-by-step tasks. Anyone who has played the original Art Academy released for the Nintendo DS should feel right at home and anyone who hasn't will find that this is the best entry point.

The lessons this time are more vibrant on the whole. For example, in the original iteration of Art Academy, paintable real nature scenes would be static, but now they are well-made video loops with leaves swaying in the wind and water creeks in motion, creating a feeling much more in line with how you would paint a scene in real life. Furthermore, for still subjects such as fruit, players have the option to change the direction of light, which instantly adds to the amount of times you can draw the same subject.

This attention to detail doesn't stop at what you are tasked to draw. When it comes to your given tool set, you can tell that actual artists were involved in the development of this game. Each set of tools is greatly detailed in both its layout and during application. A good example of this is the oil paints, which are freely mixable, with a nice set of colored oil tubes neatly laid out below your realistic-looking paint along with pallet a range of flat and round tip brushes next to that. As in real life, users have the option of letting layers of paint dry in order to create the look that is required and to avoid paint mixing on the canvas.

For drawing rookies, the lessons found throughout Art Academy assume you know nothing about painting, save for what you've built on in previous lessons that you've completed in the game. Each lesson takes great care to take you through a painting step by step, explaining each in great detail, even going as far as to explain the science behind what you are doing. The game is very good at encouraging you to do things your own way while staying in line with general instructions. Many lessons include directly related mini-lessons that don’t hold your hand and let you apply what you have learned on your own.

Going solo is where the game really shines, giving you free reign over your full set of tools, going as far as letting you select your type of drawing surface. You can choose anything from fine canvas to rough paper in a multitude of shades and colors, and as expected, these surfaces act as they would in real life. This is certainly where all of Art Academy’s replayability lies, making the game essentially playable for life.

The sharing options in the game put a damper on the playable-for-life concept, though. While the options for sharing your work are numerous, ranging from saving it as an image to your system's SD card to later transfer it to a computer to sending it directly to a fellow owner of Art Academy via the internet, the game could have been the ultimate package by adding in a self-contained sharing network, similar to what is found in Colors 3D, enabling users to comment on, rate, and discover new art. One thing that does sort of make up for this is the ability to create your own lessons, but once again, those are very limited in how they can be shared.

The problems with Art Academy are few and far between, but they do exist. If you accidentally touch another part of the touch screen with your hand while painting, you might end up with a random streak across the screen with no undo button in sight. Another major issue is the constant stylus calibration that is needed. While it might not make a difference to someone drawing for fun that their stylus is off by a millimeter, it can become quite a hassle when trying to be accurate to have to exit the game to calibrate.

All in all, Art Academy is a work of art in itself. It provides not only some of the soundest art lessons you can obtain, but the tools to apply what you learn as you learn it. It's better than learning from a book, cheaper than paying for a tutor, and a whole lot less messy than its real life alternative. Anyone who has ever wanted to pick up painting should feel incredibly confident in adding this to their library, professionals will appreciate the respect given to their field, and moms will smile when their kids apply their newfound skills in real life.

TalkBack / Sparkle Snapshots 3D Preview
« on: October 17, 2012, 12:47:50 PM »

Add some pop to your pics.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/preview/32158

What does Sparkle Snapshots 3D offer? Let's start with what we know. The eShop title turns your 3DS into a portable photo booth, complete with any tool you could need to liven up and add fun to pictures taken in Sparkle Snapshots, as well as to photos saved on your system.

Despite its name, the pictures taken or used in Sparkle Snapshots 3D are not displayed in 3D. Instead, users have the option to operate on three layers. By placing decorations in front of or behind the subject of the photo, as well as on the same layer as the photo, users can create a layered 3D effect.

Due to its vast selection of ribbons, borders, sparkles, and stickers, Sparkle Snapshots 3D may seem like an application catering to children. However, the software also offers plenty of tools for those who wish to edit photos taken with the system. Aside from large amounts of decoration, which players can supplement with add-on DLC, you can add makeup, edit eye and hair color, adjust the camera lens style, add light and color correction, and more.

Sparkle Snapshots 3D also offers a means to share your creations. The game enables users to share modified photos with other owners of the software locally via Wi-Fi, save photos to the system’s SD card for transfer to a computer, and upload creations to Nintendo’s 3D Photo Showcase website for the world to see.

Sparkle Snapshots 3D looks to offer an option-packed toolset for people who want to have fun with their 3DS photos. Stay tuned for our review of the upcoming eShop title.

TalkBack / Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Impressions
« on: October 15, 2012, 03:22:49 PM »

A hands (claws?) on with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for the 3DS.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/32131

During New York Comic Con, I took my first crack at the much-hyped (at least in Japan) Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for the 3DS. Being my first time with the series, I was eager to see what the game was all about.

One of the things going in that I was worried about was controls. When Monster Hunter was released on the PSP, many players complained that the combination of movement and camera controls relegated and cramped to the left side of the system made playing an extreme challenge. I'm glad to say that what is known as the Monster Hunter "Claw" is nowhere to be found in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Well, almost nowhere. Players can use either a moderately sized D-pad located on the touch screen or the system's D-pad itself in order to control the camera. Both controls seemed to work well enough. You can also use the L button to re-center the camera behind your character.

The demo started off in an arctic region of the game at what seemed like a base camp. The first thing that stood out was the amazing graphics. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate could easily be one of the best-looking games on the 3DS when released in March, even though it’s coming more than a year after its Japanese release. After leaving the small starting area to head to a larger area (areas are all separated by a short load screen), the beauty of the detail put into this game really began to show. Moderately sized tundras with monsters roaming around, surrounded by tall mountains and plateau sure had convinced me that not only was I about to become a monster hunter but an explorer as well. That is, until I encountered a bunch of invisible walls.

The map on the lower screen displayed around six-to-eight areas to explore in the demo. Being my first time with the game, I spent more time becoming familiar with controls and only had a chance to see about three of those areas. The second area included my first monster encounter with what looked like a huge wooly mammoth. After slaying the monster I was given the option to harvest whatever I could find from the dead monster with the tap of the A button. I immediately fell in love, being my first time with the game I was unaware of the level of scrap collecting and crafting that was in the Monster Hunter series. The second I found that monsters were dropping various hides and tools, this game's potential shot off the chart.

While I will be entering the series at a late time with this version for the 3DS, I'm pretty sure there is no other way I would rather have it. With the announcement of game save transferability between the Wii U and 3DS version, I could totally see myself hunting and gathering while on the go, regrouping my inventory when I get back home, and going multiplayer on the Wii U. Playing on the demo 3DS with the 3D on this game provided a very immersive experience, and I can only imagine how it will be at home or on the go, with headphones and a 3DS XL. I'm really looking forward to this one!
