TalkBack / Re: Etrian Odyssey X Announced In Japan
« on: April 10, 2018, 03:42:01 PM »
WHAT?  I have many (but markedly distinct) thoughts.

1)  I am starting to believe that the 3DS is immortal.  We will still be buying new games for it in 2030.
2)  X?  As in 10?  It always makes perfect sense to go from 5 to 10.  I never liked those pesky numbers 6, 7, 8, or 9 anyway.
3)  Come on Atlus, don't let me down.  The US *needs* an English release of this game.
4)  What about an Untold version of EO3?  Come on it's a matter of life and DEATH!
5)  I wonder if this franchise will continue on the Switch some day?  It is horrifying to think it would just curl up and die like Pokemon Ranger.
10)  I honestly feel that there is a huge amount of untapped potential regarding map/level design and exploration elements.  Once I made a list of about 20 original ideas just for fun.  Some ideas have appeared in games (such as one-way bridges) but still most items on this list have never been used in the games.  This franchise still has a crazy amount of potential.

I will definitely try this first.  I actually bought a collector's edition so that in case I don't like it I have a selling point.

Legend of Legacy wasn't incredibly fun for me.  If there was a new game plus option that allowed you carry over stats then you could realistically complete the game with all of the characters.

No surprise there.  Now the *real* question is whether or not it will get a fan translation.

These days "localized" actually means "censorship" when it comes to RPG's.  *cough* Dragon Quest 8, Bravely Default/Second Fire Emblem *cough*.  Fan translations would retain the sexy costumes and what ever else they think is "inappropriate" for non Japanese people.

Radiant Historia number 3?  That's insane, even more insane it's higher than a 1st-party game like Mario Kart.   If there was a top 100 list of "Best Games No One Knows About" Radiant Historia would definitely be pretty high on it.  But after sales like this it may not qualify to be on that list any more!

That is unless the sale numbers are actually:
(1)  Pokemon Ultra Sun.  1 million plus
(2)  Pokemon Ultra Moon.  1 million plus
(3) Radiant Historia.  50,000
(4) Mario Kart 7.  Less than 50,000.
etc

The 3DS lives!  I am happy that games are still coming out for this system.  Every time I think "OK *this* will be the last game ever released for 3DS" it turns out I'm wrong...again...and again...and again...

Regarding post-game content:  "and it’s almost sad how disappointing future games of the series disappoint in this area."

Is that a reference to X/Y ?  After I caught Zygarde and Mewtwo I was like, 'wait, that's it?!'

Actually I have just recently replaced GB batteries in several Pokemon carts.  I might actually play Crystal now on original hardware!

Fixed formatting - Shaymin

Oh man, I wish I could vote!  I have only played XC so far.  And even so I enjoyed Last Story more, lol.

Still need to buy/play most of the Wii U library, and then I can think about buying a Switch.  :)

TalkBack / Re: Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology (3DS) Review
« on: February 05, 2018, 03:12:34 PM »
February 13th 2017 seems like an eternity away.  Radiant Historia is by far my #1 favorite DS game -- which says a lot considering the RPG library on that piece of hardware.  Ever since I heard this game was being remade (for 3DS) in Japan it was pure torture waiting for a NA localization announcement.

As I always say... Keep 'em coming Atlus!

Now I must decide if I should finish up Etrian Odyssey 5 first or jump right into RH:PC.  Which reminds me...I wonder what the future of the "Etrian Odyssey" series will be.  Switch?  Vita?  Non-existent?  I'm sure all 10,000 of us Etrian-Odyssey fans would love a 6th game or a remake of the 3rd game....for 3DS.  Just saying.

TalkBack / Re: Switch Fastest Selling Game System Ever In United States
« on: January 04, 2018, 06:58:57 PM »
A better product and better business decisions.

1)  Nintendo invested money in advertisement.  I've never seen a Wii U commercial on TV, EVER.  I see Switch commercials on TV all the time!

2)  Merging everything into a single product.  Games slowly required more money, time, and resources to create.  It was easy to see how stretched Nintendo was to support their own consoles!

3)  Nintendo nets $611 million by selling the Mariners.  I know why Nintendo still had stock in this baseball team, but really WHY!?

I wonder if Nintendo is going to rethink it's view of the whole "quality of life" venture.  What ever happens it seems like Nintendo is capable of making good business decisions at the moment -- which is good.  The video game industry really needs a company like the big 'N.'

TalkBack / Re: Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth (3DS) Review
« on: October 17, 2017, 03:11:25 PM »
So basically the "brutal difficultly" in this game is actually normal Etrian Odyssey difficulty?  I will be receiving this in the mail today and I am psyched for it.  I can't speak for EO5 yet, but for now I would still attest to the fact that the original EO2 is by far the hardest of the entire series.

The Untold games definitely hold your hands through the entire game.  Out of curiosity (on EOU2) I started a save file under the "picnic" difficulty and played through the first floor and even reached floor 2 WITHOUT TAKING A SINGLE HIT POINT OF DAMAGE.  That's *not* Etrian Odyssey in my opinion.  I'm certainly not out to prove myself to the internet -- but I knew I couldn't live with myself if I didn't play EOU2 on any other difficulty than the hardest.  (And yes it was still easier than EO2 original)

Yes, bosses will most certainly KO your party the first attempt.  Maybe even 5th and 6th attempt.  These games are near perfectly balanced however if you play them in the following way:

(1) Cautiously explore the labyrinth deeper than your previous run.
(2) When your TP hits half it's a good idea to venture out.
(3) Once back in town rest at the inn.
(4) Do you have leftover money?  If yes: see what equipment you can buy as it really boosts your survivability in the maze.
(5) Did you level up?  If yes: assign skill points that will also significantly power your characters up.
(6) Save and repeat from #1.

All in all, EO has become one of my favorite series and by far it is the most relaxing to play.

TalkBack / Re: Pokemon Silver (3DS) Review
« on: October 02, 2017, 06:49:12 PM »
To me Pokemon's gen 2 was a disappointment.  In fact as of all 7 gens it is my second-to-least favorite (behind gen 4).  To be fair the gen 4 remakes were really amazing and I had a lot of fun with them.

Things that I considered to be design flaws are the following.
1)  At the time it was still essentially impossible to score a Mew, and gen 2 added another mythical Pokemon to further frustrate it's players.
2)  In-game clock fixing.  Without starting over a new game it was impossible to alter the in-game clock.  Not an issue until I had been playing it for about a year and it had lost a considerable amount of time and was completely out of sync with real time.
3)  Legendary dog hunt.  Until you first encountered these in battle you couldn't even search for them via Pokedex.  (See remakes which add the entry to your 'dex and then you may hunt them)  With only 1 master ball finding the other 2 was a ridiculous tedious horrid game-play-design idea.
4)  Only one metal coat per game....but two Pokemon that required it to link trade evolve.
5)  Everything was only one-time use.  TM's, link trade items, and unlike the incredibly broken and glitchy gen 1 games you couldn't hack extra TM's or items in Gold/Silver.

I remember creating a huge list of about 25 things I hated from these games but these were the glaring ones that immediately popped into my memory.  And honestly, that's probably enough of a rant.  :)

I don't know that game... but do know that if you've never played Jurassic Park (SNES) in the dark, late at night during a sleepover with friends, you've never lived.

No way, I recently just played through Jurassic Park again last month.  It is the only reason I ever need to hook up my SNES up considering I have every other game in some other virtual console release form.  After beating it I happily sighed and said, "people don't even know this game exists."

And then I read your comment.  MIND BLOWN!  ^_^

Sorry, I already ordered the Amazon-exclusive steel book.  (For the Pokes)

39
The total number of boxes should be increased.

However I am concerned that Game Freak is usually behind the times when it comes to natural progressions like these.  Consider the fact that Pokemon Bank provided 100 boxes for a total of 3,000 Pokemon.  This was released during the 6th generation, and here we are in the 7th generation.  Sadly though the Bank still only offers 100 boxes.

Sure, 100 boxes was sufficient for me in 2013.  However one would possibly accrue the (1) Gen 7 Pokemon along with their various/multiple forms.  (2)  The complete Alola Dex provided you wished to have a complete set with the Alola "club/clover" mark.  (3)  A complete Kanto Dex from Red/Blue/Yellow with the "game boy" icon mark.

Ignoring forms this will be an extra 81, 302, and 151 Pokemon respectively.  Game Freak needs to give us more space.  Period.

40
Sweet.  Naturally I already had this pre-ordered but I'm glad to see my order will include some great bonus items.

Now I have hope that Radiant Historia might get the same treatment.  If so I'll definitely pre-order a second one to match my sealed Japanese Radiant Historia collector's box.  (Kind of obsessed with that game lol)

Back to Etria Lore, I am excited for this game.  Keep 'em coming Atlus, keep 'em coming!

I loved this game too.  But how does the game-breaking last-tower glitch work in this eShop version?  Is it fixed?  Is it easier to restart over and over and over again verses the Wii version?

Any inferences to be drawn on whether this could mean Stars or a Gen 4 remake? I need another 3DS for evolving Pokémon and transferring items. This may work nice, especially if I can bundle it with a game or two.

The Gen 4 remakes of Diamond Dust and Pearl Powder *will* happen for one simple reason:  money.

Now will they be released for 3DS?  Switch?  Something else?  Good questions these.  My conjecture would be 3DS in October/November 2017 to coincide with Game Freak's near-annual release schedule.  Plus considering how long video games must be in development these days I am willing to bet Game Freak began developing Diamond Dust and Pearl Powder the day after ORAS were released (Nov 22, 2014).

...And Nintendo will produce exactly 10,000 of them which will sell out in 7 seconds and personally I will be the recipient of exactly 0 of them.

Cool man!

Can't wait for the N64 mini in 2018.

Fastest selling system in Nintendo history in the US?  Hmm... Maybe because they ACTUALLY ADVERTISED it?

In the past 4-5ish years I never saw a single Wii U commercial, period.  And thanks to NWR I knew that the big N was going to have a 4th-quarter superbowl commercial.  So before the system is even released I see a commercial for the Switch during the biggest sporting event in the US.

Why do companies spend millions of dollars advertising?  Because it works.  In my opinion it seems as though Nintendo's current president is capable of making intelligent business decisions.

OMG!!!!!!  (*breath don't stop breathing*)

Radiant Historia is BY FAR my favorite DS game, and I have over 50 games for said system.  That also says a lot considering how rich the RPG library was for the Nintendo DS.  How much do I love it?  Well I just played through it again last year.  I also had bought both game guides for it even though I don't understand any Japanese.  (pretty pictures though!)

I am not one to believe that dreams have meaning or power or anything.  But I kid you not:  Last week I had this dream where I saw Radiant Historia images advertised on TV as if there was a sequel or something.  I was super exciting shouting OMG (See above) but then I wake up.  I am only sharing this paragraph as I actually got to experience this emotion twice!  Once awake and once asleep.

Finally.  Dear Atlus Please Please Please Please Please release this in NA too.  Oh and by the way, you know the game called Etrian Odyssey 5?  Please Please Please Please Please get on the ball and release that in NA too.  Thanks!  ^_^

TalkBack / Re: Pokemon Sun/Moon (3DS) Review Revisit
« on: February 22, 2017, 10:36:14 AM »
I really enjoyed Sun/Moon.  As a franchise it really seemed to be stuck in the 90's.  They hung onto sprites until X/Y in 2013 and had also clung to many RPG-cliche-staples of yester-yester-decade.  That said, even though they fixed what NEEDED to be fixed they also broke things that shouldn't have been broken.  Mainly I am talking about amazing features from Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire.  I imagine that the development of Sun/Moon began the second X/Y were released...and ORAS sometime later.  Hence the amazing features in ORAS perhaps couldn't be added into Sun/Moon.

I will definitely buy the Gen 4 remakes Diamond Dust and Pearl Powder when they come out later.  My guess is 2017...but 2018 may be more realistic.  My biggest hope with the remakes would be HM's are replaced by riding Pokemon like Sun/Moon, and it's not as infernally slow like the original DP games.

TalkBack / Re: Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing Apps Announced For Mobile
« on: April 27, 2016, 01:59:06 PM »

Alas, I feel sad for those that want a new Advance Wars.

Thanks!  ^_^  But I cherish the four I have, and replay them all every 4-5 years.

Animal Crossing having micro-transactions scares me.  Thousands of items or themes or sets, all for $XX.  Maybe if you had more freedom of expression.  I.e., the room can be as big as we want, have as many furniture pieces displayed as you want, and can alter wall/floor with any combo of design.  That is, north wall may be different, or even sections of said north wall can be customized.  Still, playing Wild World until 2009 probably has be set for life when it comes to Animal Crossing.

TalkBack / Re: Fire Emblem and the 'Way Games Should be Played'
« on: March 10, 2016, 11:46:59 AM »
Excellent editorial.  This trend of "making games easier" is common.  Guitar Hero World Tour added a mode where you don't even have to press buttons, you only strum.  Mario games help you out if you die too many times on a level.  Etrian Odyssey (from game 4 on) added a less-hardcore mode.  Having beaten EO 1/2/3 I knew I couldn't live with MYSELF if I played any on it's classic this-game-is-designed-to-kill-you mode.  But there is such a simple solution to all of these.  If you don't want to play the "easy" mode, then DON'T!

TheBigK's comment hits the nail though; to put it bluntly, people have issues.  My biggest peeve is people showering threads with "OMG there's no games to play"  or "OMG Nintendo needs to make more games."  CLEARLY these people do not have a job, a life, or a girlfriend.  But I have to take a breath and realize the audience in question lacks the ability to get a job or a girl/boy friend.  Trust me though:  Walmart is ALWAYS hiring.  Going along with TheBigK's thought, so many have constricted themselves to an antisocial shell of what life is, and they are the only person in their entire universe.  Everything is about them, for them, because of them.  Beautiful people usually get prejudicial hatred/jealousy directly at them for being so "stuck up" and "egocentric."  But let's face it, there are many other demographics who are much worse.

Let me share one final thought.  I knew a kid who would print out detailed walkthroughs of every game he owned.  He would play the game in the following way:  (1)  Read what he had to do (2) execute it in the game.  (3)  Repeat.  This would even occur for puzzle games!  He would read the solution to every Zelda puzzle and then go play the floor, or room, or dungeon.  I don't understand how that is fun.  But hey, he had fun playing games that way.  I certainly don't lose any sleep over it.  Evidently "hardcore" Fire Emblem fans lose sleep over someone they don't even know playing the game on casual mode.  So sad.

TalkBack / Re: Gaining Experience Without Points in The Legend of Legacy
« on: October 06, 2015, 06:20:40 PM »
And here I was saying just a few months ago that "Final Fantasy 2 mechanics have never really been used since."  After playing through Final Fantasy this summer, I was tempted to play FF2 again as well.  But the leveling-up-mechanics memories started giving me a headache so I opted out.  Don't get me wrong, I liked the game...BUT....that one dungeon where you are stuck for a while has that enemy that instant KO's your characters who have a "multiple of 5" stat.  (Sorry that was extremely vague)  Well unlucky for me 3 of my characters had such a stat....OH!  And we were playing a game with essentially no way of leveling up and changing said stat.  Hence every battle seemed to be a boss battle trying to cope with 75% of my characters always dead.

I sure hope Legend of Legacy has no such broken areas like that.  I've had it pre-ordered for a while so it's release has sneaked up on me.  I need some new RPG's for my system.  ^_^

Nice!  I just played through the campaign about 2-3 weeks ago during my retro summer run.  I've actually never beaten the hard campaign, but I really enjoy the normal campaign...other than the first few stages which are essentially tutorials.  The AI was slightly improved and many AI-exploits that I used in the first game no longer worked.  I agree, however, that AW:DS got really crazy with the attitude of "hey let's add a million playable CO's some of whom are OP and let them both have a turn during super CO power" which I feel made the game unbalanced.

Dear Intelligent Systems:  With a franchise like THIS, permanent death makes sense and is fun.  One could lose dozens of units and not feel the need to replay the stage.  Please make more games from this franchise.
