Gotta go fast!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33649

Nintendo has uploaded a video to Youtube showcasing one instance of the improved load times scheduled to be included in the upcoming Wii U firmware update. The video shows a comparison video of a person closing a game of New Super Mario Bros. U and returning to the main menu. After the update, it seems to take the system 6 to 7 seconds to fully return to the main menu, which is about a third of the time it currently takes, which is about 21 to 22 seconds.

Watch the video below to see for yourself.

TalkBack / Nintendo Lessens Requirements for eShop Development
« on: March 26, 2013, 09:11:54 AM »

Don't have an office? No problem.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33633

Nintendo's manager of business development Dan Adelman has revealed in an interview with Gamasutra that it has lowered its requirements for developers to make games on their Wii U and 3DS eShops. In the interview, Dan mentions that Nintendo wants to make getting a game approved on the eShop "as frictionless as possible", compared to the WiiWare and DSiWare services.

Dan goes on to say that while you still need to be a licensed developer by Nintendo, it's now a much easier process, due to getting rid of certain requirements such as needing a dedicated office space. "As you point out, more and more people are working from home, and we recognize that developers are forming virtual teams around the world." Adelman says. "So I'm glad that I can officially confirm that the office requirement is a thing of the past." He also goes on to mention that the developers not requiring a presence in specific territories to publish a game, and letting them have free range on when they can lower the price of their game, as well as being able to easily patch them when they want, without a huge cost.

Another requirement that has changed has changed from the WiiWare and DSiWare system was needing to pass a supposed "6000 sales threshold" in order for the developer to get paid. Adelman said that this was Nintendo's attempt at trying to curb low-quality software, while at the same time having a hands-off approach to the games being developed by third-parties. "We didn't believe that Nintendo should screen game concepts." says Adelman. "That should be up to the developer who's making the investment. Instead, we wanted to have a mechanism that would encourage developers to self-police their own game quality."

The threshold was thought to be a convenient way to go about it. Unfortunately, some great games that just didn't find an audience wound up being penalized. So for all systems after WiiWare -- DSiWare, Nintendo 3DS eShop, and Wii U eShop, we decided to get rid of the thresholds altogether. Developers receive revenue from unit 1."

TalkBack / Update v1.2.0 Released for New Super Mario Bros. U
« on: March 16, 2013, 12:31:47 AM »

In-game posts now have their own community

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33579

Nintendo has released an update for their Wii U title New Super Mario Bros. U. The update, which changes the game's version to v1.2.0, now sends the Miiverse posts you make in-game after accomplishing certain goals to a dedicated New Super Mario Bros. U community.

The new community is designated specifically for these in-game posts, so players are only able to leave comments. The original Miiverse community for the game still exists for game discussion purposes.

The update should automatically download and install once you start up New Super Mario Bros. U from the Wii U menu.

Yeah, this isn't the type of game that you just play to see the ending in the shortest possible time. The reviewer totally misses the point.
No, I got the point. I'm not against high score chasers at all, as some of them like Tetris, Bookworm, Kirby's Pinball Land, etc. are some of the most played games on my 3DS. But when the game doesn't really have a hook, other than to SLIGHTLY increase your time, I'm not interested.

How haven't you noticed the big difference in speed between many of the objects? Are you seriously suggesting you don't notice the huge difference between the Rubber Ball and the Mutagen?

I've noticed the differences between the objects, just not in the sense of having any clear advantage over just the plain old rock, other than making it easier/harder to get down the well. No improvements in time. I don't enjoy difficulty that stems from you being crippled.

Quote
Would you also criticise Zen Pinball 3D because you can experience every level within an hour?

No, because part of the charm of games like pinball is seeing how long you can go, and how high you can get your score. The wells in this game are of a finite depth, so it's hard to see myself coming back to them, when my result is essentially going to be the same, if not only SLIGHTLY better every time. If there was an endless well, then things would be different.

TalkBack / Kersploosh! Review

Fails to make a splash.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/33525

Throwing rocks, coins, and other objects down wells is oddly satisfying. The combination of not knowing what's inside the well or how deep it goes, and hearing that short but sweet sound of objects hitting the water is an experience not easily replicated. Poisoft tries to, though, in Kersploosh!, its latest 3DS eShop release. While its interpretation of what actually goes on inside the well is interesting, you won't spending much of your time there.

The point of the game is simple: you toss a rock, rubber ball, or various other unlockable objects down a well, using the Circle pad to control the object as it descends. Inside the well are various obstacles you have to avoid, such as wooden planks, pizza, Japanese sliding doors, cookies, and more. Hitting these obstacles chips away at your object's health; when it reaches zero, it's game over. Donuts inside the well boost your speed if you slide through their center, and balloons replenish some of your falling object's health.

While the idea and presentation of such a simple concept is engaging, the execution left a lot to be desired. You only use the Circle Pad, which I found too sensitive to play properly. Even the slightest nudge in any direction sends your object speeding toward the well’s edge if you're not careful. I would've preferred a control method that used the bottom touch screen, as it's not used for anything other than displaying the control method, and what the donuts and balloons do. The recycling of obstacles throughout the game's 10 wells, which you can blow through within an hour, also hurts the presentation. You can unlock eight other objects to throw into the well, but in my experience with the game, they offer little to no benefit in terms of getting to the bottom any faster than the default rock.

The game’s visuals are solid, but the glasses-free 3D got in the way of sensing depth, due to the motion lines constantly traveling upward, not letting me properly see what was coming. Kersploosh! also uses only one techno song for every stage, and while the fast-paced track works to illustrate free fall, it's nothing memorable.

Kersploosh! has some opportunities for fun, but the game is over before its concept gets a chance to shine. I‘d love to see a more fleshed out version of this unique game in the future. Until then, I'll be tossing quarters into the local wishing well to see if that'll ever come true. Let's hope they get past all that pizza.

TalkBack / Air Battle Hockey 3D Review
« on: February 22, 2013, 06:22:01 PM »

Zamboni not included.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/33419

I absolutely love air hockey. Yet whenever I play it, one of two things end up happening. One, I start realizing that I am not very good at air hockey, and two, someone(i.e. me) ends up getting hurt. Thankfully, neither of these situations happened when I played the recent eShop release of AirBattle Hockey 3D from 10TACLE Studios. However, with the miniscule amount of content, the only thing that might be hurting is your wallet.

AirBattle Hockey 3D is one part air hockey and one part Super Glove Ball, the game that came with the NES Power Glove. The game is essentially a 3 dimensional version of Pong, in which you use the touch screen to move your paddle on the 3D screen in order to hit the ball into your opponent's goal while protecting your own. The game mechanics are very simple, yet I found myself having quite a bit of fun facing off against the computer-controlled opponent. It also helps that the game is spiced up a bit with various power-ups that are awarded to you if you perform exceptionally well. Power-ups include doubling the size of your paddle, drawing the ball towards your paddle, increasing the power of your shots, and more. I have not yet had a chance to play the 2-player mode, as no one I know has a copy of the game, and there is no download play option, but the manual indicates it's similar to playing against the CPU.

Although I had some fun playing against the CPU, it's hard to excuse the lack of gameplay options. There are only two modes to be found in the game: Versus and Endless. In Versus, you can play against the CPU or another player, as well as set various rules(whether power-ups are on, the number of points required to win, CPU difficulty, etc.). In endless mode, you play against a wall and must rally for as long as you can with the speed of the ball increasing after every 10 rallies. While there isn't anything wrong with these modes, I wish the developers would've included more gameplay variants and more levels, as you're stuck with the same empty hallway in every single mode.

AirBattle Hockey 3D serves up a fantastic foundation, with a really cool art style, an appropriate yet unmemorable soundtrack, and some solid gameplay, but the lack of gameplay modes is a real bummer. If the game ever goes on sale or becomes a Club Nintendo reward, I would recommend picking it up. As the current package stands, it's going to have to stay in the penalty box.

TalkBack / Watch Dogs Confirmed for Wii U
« on: February 20, 2013, 10:35:54 PM »

It's the only Nintendo news to come out of Sony's PS4 reveal.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33383

Watch Dogs is coming to Wii U, Ubisoft finally confirmed.

Following Sony's PlayStation 4 event, where they showed off a real-time demo of the game, Ubisoft issued a press release saying that the game would see release on not only the PlayStation 4, but also the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and of course, the Wii U.

Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, with an assist from Bucharest, Paris, Quebec, and Reflections, Watch_Dogs is an open world game where the player uses technology to fight against oppressive forces. The game takes place in Chicago and stars Aiden Pearce, who has the ability to hack into the city's ctOS (central operating system).
