TalkBack / Re: Disney Shuts Down LucasArts Internal Development
« on: April 04, 2013, 06:35:11 AM »
You never like to hear of people losing their jobs, but now outside studios will have a chance to bid on licenses to make Star Wars games, and we should (theoretically) start seeing strong titles.  The Force Unleashed titles were okay, but imagine what it could of been in the hands of Crystal Dynamics or Naughty Dog instead.  What about a Criterion-developed Pod Racer?  I'm excited to see what they can do in the run up to the new trilogy.

I'd like to personally thank the person(s) responsible at Disney for keeping this project far, far away from Warren Spector.  This can't come soon enough!

I guess I lucked out: managed to get LEGO City Undercover, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and Need for Speed Most Wanted U.

You all need to start visiting cheapassgamer.com.  Target is offering buy 2 get 1 free on ALL games beginning Sunday the 17th.  That means Need for Speed Most Wanted U, Lego City Undercover, and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for roughly $33 each.  Not a bad deal, IMO.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Xenoblade+-+Nintendo+Wii+U/8713071.p?id=1218887714799&skuId=8713071&st=xenoblade%20chronicles&lp=1&cp=1

Saw this on neogaf, and it turned out to be true.  Whether it's an HD remaster warm-up act for 'X', or even 'X' itself, I'm psyched that we will likely see a real JRPG on Wii U sometime this year!

EDIT:  Potentially bad news if you were hoping this was a Xenoblade HD remaster; I looked at the full list of Wii U games at bestbuy.com later and noticed that they also list Mario 3D, Shin Megami Tensei Fire Emblem, and Yarn Yoshi in addition to Xenoblade.  This might indicate that they simply are listing announced games from the Nintendo Direct.  I also doubt that these could all be 2013 titles, but I'm willing to be pleasantly surprised!

That's it.  Right there.  The only game I truly bought a Wii U for.  I don't care if it's not until 2014, but I will have that game day one.  Good show, Monolith and Nintendo!

Great column idea!  I remember picking up the SP along with Advance Wars and Phantasy Star Collection, one of the best purchases I ever made.  The DSLite remains my favorite Nintendo portable of all time, but the SP is right up there too.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo TVii Impressions
« on: December 21, 2012, 10:00:26 PM »
Although Neal did touch on it halfway through his impressions, I think the Sports tab is the most useful one.  I've already tagged the Chicago Bears and Bulls, plus WVU, Florida, and DePaul for college hoops and can see the upcoming TV schedules much more conveniently.  Living in south Florida, I don't always get the broadcasts for the teams I follow.  Thanks to TVii yesterday, I found out we'll get the Giants at 4:30 on Sunday instead of Chicago-Arizona.  Usually you have to wait for the Sunday morning paper to find out what's actually going to be on for the out-of-town NFL games.  It's a small thing for sure, but hey, it didn't cost me anything extra!

Not a bad idea, but let's have them working on those HD remakes of Gamecube and Wii games first!  I'll take Xenoblade Chronicles and the Mario Galaxy games in 1080p, please!  (One can dream...)

TalkBack / Re: Why Nintendo Needs to Continue Doing Its Own Thing
« on: December 01, 2012, 03:51:51 PM »
I don't disagree with the larger point that Nintendo needs to develop hardware in such a way that they can continue to be profitable for years to come.  That being said, it would be nice to be able to buy just 1 console so you could play all the great Nintendo-developed and top-tier 3rd party developed games.  Unless you're willing to skip out on 50% of the market, you have to buy at least 2 consoles each generation.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: how are the Darksiders 2, Batman and BLOPS 2 ports?
« on: November 28, 2012, 04:30:02 AM »
I have Batman on rental from Gamefly right now and I'm somewhat mystified at all the posts on other sites about graphical and framerate issues.  It seems just fine to me, but I guess I'm not that discerning of a gamer!  If Wii U is your only way to get these games, then by all means get them.

TalkBack / Re: Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Review
« on: November 27, 2012, 06:35:20 AM »
Does it feel like it has rubberband AI? Or really annoying weapons constantly coming at you when you're in first place, in the single player mode?

No, absolutely not!  This game actually requires skill to complete and offers 3 levels of difficulty on every course in the world tour.  If you learn the courses and the drifting mechanic, you will win the race.  There's a very limited number of weapons and there is no equivalent of the infamous blue shell.  I have found this game to the be the most compelling of all the launch lineup and it easily trumps the Mario Kart series.  Especially at $40, it is a must-have.  I know that the rating is not the most important part of a review, but I think an '8' really is too low.

TalkBack / Re: Server Stress and Broken Systems Vex Wii U Launch
« on: November 19, 2012, 06:06:15 AM »
Wow, I feel badly for those with the video output problem.  I have something similar, but much less severe.  When running the HDMI through my 5.1 receiver (just like my PS3 and cable), I kept getting flickering and lost video signals.  I tried other cables, moved around other components, but only the Wii U was having trouble holding the signal.  I finally gave up and used my other HDMI input on the tv directly, but now of course I have to use my TV's speakers.  I went ahead and ordered the Turtle Beach headset for $35 on Amazon since I planned to get something for voicechat anyway, but I am disappointed and not eager to run out and try another receiver just to see if that's the problem.

Maybe that high profile game is Watch_Dogs.  It's an Ubisoft title, and they seem to be 100% behind the WiiU.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: getting a u on launch day...
« on: November 15, 2012, 03:01:38 AM »
I think as long as you attempt to hit a few stores like Walmart, Target, Toys R Us, and Best Buy on Sunday morning, you'll be able to score at least a Basic set.  Of those four, only Walmart has advertised having Wii U in stock that day, so you may want to start there first.  If the Wii U is going to become difficult to find, it's only after the first wave of media coverage that describes the initial sell-out - people want what they can't get!

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U Launch Lists/Plans/Budgets
« on: November 11, 2012, 10:39:01 AM »
Oddly enough, this week, TRU is running B1G1 40% off on all Wii, DS, 3DS and... Wii U games that are $49.99 or less.  Also only good until the 17th.

Is it planned that a large amount of Wii U titles will be out before the system?

Yeah, I saw that too, except that the $49.99 Wii U games are things like Just Dance 4 and ESPN Sports Connection.  It looks like all the EA games, plus all the Ubisoft (with the exception of ZombiU - of course) are releasing before launch.

For those that missed out on the Newegg $12 off coupon last month, Toys R Us is having a pretty good sale this week, including Wii U games.

Buy 1 $59.99 game, get $10 or Buy 2 and get $30 off.

It only works from 11/11 to 11/17, so the Nintendo first party releases and ZombiU are excluded, but the following should be available beginning Tuesday, 11/13:

Assassin's Creed III
Super Scribblenauts
Fifa 13
Madden NFL 13
Mass Effect 3

Also, already posted in the deals thread, but ALL Wii U games will be buy 1, get 1 40% beginning 8pm Thanksgiving night and into Friday.

Pre-Ordered
Deluxe Set at Best Buy ($350)
Pro Controller at Newegg ($38)
ZombiU at Newegg ($48)
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 at Amazon ($50)

Subtotal: $486
Tax: $21 on system only

Total: $507 less $215 in giftcards at Best Buy and $50 in rewards points at Amazon = $238 out of pocket!

I'm holding out hope that maybe some first party Gamecube games may be available on the WiiU eShop, playable on the tablet of course!

Also, several listed Rayman Legends at launch - I believe it's been delayed until March 2013.

Well, at least we should find out what the 3DS XL holiday bundles are going to be.  Probably white with Mario Kart 7 downloaded like Europe, and pink with Style Savvy.  I'm hoping for a Paper Mario bundle though.  I need some WiiU 2013 information though, just ONE Nintendo-developed title that's new and exciting (and Pikmin doesn't cut it for me).

Podcast Discussion / Re: Best of the Wii: Xenoblade Chronicles
« on: September 21, 2012, 05:26:50 AM »
Xenoblade would have been my #1 too if I had a vote.  I'm really curious as to what the top 5 are.  Both Mario Galaxies are in there for sure, plus Metroid Prime Trilogy (or just Corruption) - no problem with those choices. Maybe Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword to round it out?

Has Nintendo discussed whether there is virtual console as part of the WiiU eShop on day 1 recently?  I could have sworn someone from PR over a year ago talked about Gamecube games potentially showing up.

Another great write-up.  I'm glad to hear that 6 of the events have a substantial single-player focus.  My friends are not always going to be around, and since there's no online, I wanted to be able to get some substantial playtime regardless.  What I'd really like to see is an update to Canvas Curse using the gamepad.  That's still my favorite use of the DS touchscreen ever.
