Olympus has Fallen

I'm sure there is a very robust list out there with all the things wrong with this movie.
but I'll just name a few glaring issues that make the whole movie not make any damn sense.

1) There is an armed unidentified foreign plane from somewhere over the Atlantic flying into restricted airspace above DC and they only confront it a few moments before it reaches the white house. It should have been confronted long before it reached the restricted airspace above the Nations Capital.... like somewhere over the atlantic and as soon as it reached US airspace.
For some reason they waited till they were over downtown DC to send to fighter planes, which were both shot down over the downtown area. it took another 3-4 minutes before another one got within missle range and shot it down on the white house lawn.
.

2) They didn't swarm the White House with tactical units because there were 4 armed men on the roof.... even though they had clear line of sight on these 4 men, and could sneak 2 of their own men all the way to the wall of the building to gran the presidents son from a vent that leads to basement, they chose to stay back and wait it out looking for a way to get in. Even after the men on the roof were eliminate from the equation, they still maintained a perimeter and left the White house, which was empty with no front doors, wide open and unoccupied by neither friendly nor enemy soldiers. Instead they let the one man army, who was not in active duty with the Secret Service, Military or police, continue to do all of their recon and surveillance and roam the empty white house halls all by his lonesome, except for the few occasions where he ran into small groups of terrorist that he would single handedly dismantle.

3) apparently just anyone can use the bunker elevator even though they showed that it took a secret service code... the same goes with presidential laptops kept in the oval office. That old code that might have worked when you were secret service months ago is likely still active because... well... why not!? go ahead and delete confidential files and capture control of the video conferencing from the bunker. Also freely enter and exit the underground bunker at will without anyone (inside or outside of the bunker) knowing.

I hope the other movie that seems eerily similar to this one starring Jaime Foxx as president is much better than this one. what was that called? White House Down?
it even has the same title, since Olympus is the code name for the White house in this movie.

Another Movie Day

3 Movies:
2 Guns, Kick Ass 2 & Riddick

2 Guns was pretty good. probably my favorite movie if the day but I wasn't really crazy about any of them.

Kick Ass 2.... not enough Big Daddy/Hit Girl action.

Riddick - the flying cycle moment from the movie looked like it was inspired by Flash Gordon.

low budget CGI is the culprit, but it looked really bad in comparison to all the other CGI which was not all that bad.

Riddick on a cycle, having a pet, being the last of his race, damn near impossible to kill, he's starting to remind me of Lobo from DC Comics.

Actually, Vin Diesel and Ron Perlman would both make great Lobos.

A Serbian Movie - well, wasn't that twisted...

Quick synopsis of the plot: Ex-porn star gets enticed to rejoin the industry for one last film by an offer he couldn't refuse from a benefactor that I'm not sure ever revealed himself.

2nd half of this movie is fucked up. I'm far too desensitized for it to really effect me (damn internet) but wow, I see why this movie was banned practically everywhere.

Why was it banned you ask!? well, if you want me to ruin the movie for you, I won't.
Just know that you won't (and shouldn't) be prepared to see what you will see, and it's probably best to go in blind if you don't think that will bother you.

The Place Beyond the Pines -  Derek Cianfrance's epic The Place Beyond the Pines (TPBTP) tells a sweeping story of the cyclical nature of crime, and while not quite as focused as his previous film, Blue Valentine, TPBTP manages to retain that movie's feeling of intimacy despite the grander scale.

I particularly liked this film's act structure, which really appealed to me. Without delving into spoilers, TPYTP is essentially comprised of three related stories, each of which feed into the next sequential act. Cianfrance takes a couple of bold decisions (and uses a number of recognisable, and quite frankly, very obvious techniques) to wrangle the story to where it needs to go. It's pretty obvious by the third act where the story is heading, but I still found it enjoyable to watch it unfold.

It's certainly not a subtle film, but it is one which manages to tell an epic tale of fathers and sons, has a really quite interesting structure, and features some great performances from it's actors. It's probably not to everyone's tastes, but it's certainly a film that's well worth watching.
Gouge away.

White House Down - what a ludicrously stupid film that knows its stupid.

I couldn't un-see, after about 10 minutes in, that all the scenes directly in front of the white house was just a set and green screened the surrounding areas in. I know that's the case in productions but i could see it on-screen and it spoiled the "feeling" for me. Olympus Has Fallen never had this problem.

From Up on Poppy Hill - 7/10

The most recent Ghibli movie (though I think the new one about the plane designer is already out in Japan and should be out in North America soon). This one was made by Hayao Miyazaki's son, Goro Miyazaki. I've always thought there was a bit of parallelism between Miyazaki and Miyamoto.. two geniuses at what they do, innovators and artists, but now they're getting older and are trying to train the new generation (in Miyamoto's case, Aonuma etc).

But I digress. The movie itself was contemplative and methodically paced, which I liked a lot. There was lots of time to admire the beautiful visuals, and there were some striking contrasts in scenery which made the visual style quite appealing. The plot itself was alright though. It was a coming-of-age story, but not one in the Kiki's Delivery Service style; rather more grounded in reality.

My main problem with the story is similar to my complaints with Ponyo, which to me was an abomination of the worst kind. In that movie, the entire conflict was resolved by the boy making a promise to love the girl, and there was never even a doubt that he did. In "From Up on Poppy Hill" they tease at both adultery and incestuous feelings, but both of those issues (the central conflict, really) are resolved in the neatest (and therefore least convincing) of manners.

Overall worth watching but I hope Miyazaki's own next movie is up to his old standards. I feel like with the recent Pixar and Ghibli movies, it's indicative of the quality slipping at the two best animation studios in the world, which is a shame.

The only difference between the two is Olympus Has Fallen showed violence as much as possible where WHD didn't - by blocking views of wounds with shoulders, hands and camera angles.

Riddick was enjoyable--basically exactly what I wanted from the movie. I liked how it was divided roughly into thirds:

1) A series of Edgar Rice Burroughs book covers (especially when Riddick is nekkid) with a brief apology for Chronicles of Riddick;

2) Introduction of, and suspense-laden killing off of, various mercenaries, plus the "big reveal;"

3) Pitch Black 2, culminating in what amounts to another Edgar Rice Burroughs book cover.

Only thing I didn't like about the movie was Riddick's dog, which was A COMPLETELY TERRAN DOG. But that whole opening third is what I imagine Riddick does in his spare time, so I really liked it. ****, I liked the whole movie.

Prisoners: Currently my pick for best movie this year out of a possible 10.

Great performances from everyone. It feels a little long, but it's a great ride with a swell ending. It's all around pretty damn great.

Stargate (1994) - Meh. Roland Emmerich is a lousy director, as proven by his Godzilla reboot. He didn't do much better with Stargate. I'm glad the SciFi Channel series was so successful, but the original movie was bleh.

We truly live in a wonderful times. Sci-fi movies are back and are stronger than ever.

Gravity
Outstanding, stunning, nerve-wrecking, incredibly tense, fantastically written...  In a year filled with good to great sci-fi movies this takes the crown not just for the best sci-fi, but as the best movie in general.

 Loved every second.
