General Chat / Re: Hockey Discussion

The season's still almost a month away, but I'm really pumped for hockey to start. NHL 14 came out last week and is awesome as ever, and I just got out of my fantasy draft for this year. Despite my picking third, consensus number one Steven Stamkos fell to me, and then I managed to get Claude Giroux late in the second round. I like my skaters, but I'm a little thin at goaltender, although two of them have pretty great upside.

Is everybody else ready for some hockey?

Hell yes I'm ready. My friends and I do a fantasy league with 20 teams, and 20 players each, with a customised points system. It's insanely deep (and also has a huge pot) so we get very competitive about it. Need to do my research!

So isn't Ace Attorney 5 supposed to be out soon? WHY ISN'T THERE A THREAD ON IT??

Over the last 3 years the only games I've played have basically been Super Mario 3D Land and Pikmin 3. But I'm super stoked for this one.

From Up on Poppy Hill - 7/10

The most recent Ghibli movie (though I think the new one about the plane designer is already out in Japan and should be out in North America soon). This one was made by Hayao Miyazaki's son, Goro Miyazaki. I've always thought there was a bit of parallelism between Miyazaki and Miyamoto.. two geniuses at what they do, innovators and artists, but now they're getting older and are trying to train the new generation (in Miyamoto's case, Aonuma etc).

But I digress. The movie itself was contemplative and methodically paced, which I liked a lot. There was lots of time to admire the beautiful visuals, and there were some striking contrasts in scenery which made the visual style quite appealing. The plot itself was alright though. It was a coming-of-age story, but not one in the Kiki's Delivery Service style; rather more grounded in reality.

My main problem with the story is similar to my complaints with Ponyo, which to me was an abomination of the worst kind. In that movie, the entire conflict was resolved by the boy making a promise to love the girl, and there was never even a doubt that he did. In "From Up on Poppy Hill" they tease at both adultery and incestuous feelings, but both of those issues (the central conflict, really) are resolved in the neatest (and therefore least convincing) of manners.

Overall worth watching but I hope Miyazaki's own next movie is up to his old standards. I feel like with the recent Pixar and Ghibli movies, it's indicative of the quality slipping at the two best animation studios in the world, which is a shame.

For someone who hasn't been following games for a long time.

Can someone please give me the exec summary on the wii u? Innovation, cool new features, specs, exciting announced games, third party interest etc.

Also what are EAD Tokyo and retro doing ?

Thanks. Nice to read posts from familiar posters once again

What I got from that excerpt is that he believes (and rightly I think) that f zero gx was pretty much all you could ask for gameplay-wise from an f-zero game. It's not like Zelda and Mario where the worlds are so expansive, the gameplay so varied and the universes so conducive to new and interesting ideas. More than anything miyamoto cherishes creativity and with f zero you just can't do that anymore without significantly changing core mechanics.

F zero gx is my second favourite game of the last 10 years. It is the most thrilling, the most hypnotisingly brutal, the most rewardingly painful game I have ever played. Changing it to be an "accessible online racing game" is about the worst Nintendo can do. And miyamoto realises this.

So all in all, while an f zero game would excite me, I think that Nintendo is probably right in leaving that franchise to rest for some more time.

Heh, who would have thought your Funhouse would become the most popular board.

Also holy ****... stevey is now one of the most coherent posters on here. Words can't even describe how mindfucked I am right now.

The first page in the Console Discussion forum has threads that date back to September. I remember when there was a new front page everyday.. and this was in the bleak days of the second half of the GameCube.

Also, why do I have a tingle avatar? And what are these point thingies? And who left and who stayed? And are there any games in the past two years that are worth playing?

Okay so I've been playing through this. It's good.. not as awesome as the Phoenix games but still above average. I guess I should stop waiting for an Ace Attorney game to capture the same magic as the first PW did. But there are moments which provide some hope. I just ran across this one and it's awesome.

Kay: And remember, you have to yell, "Badger GET!" each time, or it doesn't count!

I browsed through the last few pages of this thread and holy ****. Especially considering the third party support and Wii being underpowered and blah blah blah. I actually think you could find a thread from 2006 with the EXACT SAME posters, arguments and even wording.

Don't you guys ever get bored? Or at the very least deja vu?

Can someone tell me what Paul Greengrass' new movie with Matt Damon is all about? What's the difference between a Bourne movie?

Right, recent movies..

Avatar was great visually and the world was enthralling, but the story and characters were simple and archetypal. Movie of the year? Not by a long shot - that goes to either The Hurt Locker or Up in the Air.

Sherlock Holmes
was better than I expected but not brilliant. Robert Downey is incredible of course.

Up 3/5
Also, the old man waited until after his wife died to go to Paradise Falls.  Fail.

Wow, way to completely miss the point of the movie (and a major plot cue too).

Jessie - thanks for becoming a part of our community.
I'll pick up and try out the game just for that.

He was always part of our community... have people still not figured it out after, what, 3 years?

Just watched "Go" (1999). I'm fascinated whenever movies do the whole intersecting paths of characters thing, and it was done well in this movie. Recommended.

You guys should look out for "Up in the Air". It's my sleeper pick for the Christmas holidays - last year it was Slumdog Millionaire.

Bill, Mario, GP... it seems like the NWR forums die a little each passing year from why I enjoy coming here and lurking so much... So sad. :-(

Yeah, we're far away from what I consider PGC's golden age (2003-2005). The only actives I see still remaining (glancing around quickly) are you, vudu, BnM, Kashogi, Pro, KDR, ShyGuy, Pale and Ian. And of course stevey, whose grammar has improved so much that it makes me nostalgic. Does TVman still post (or whatever his new name is?) What about Caliban?

Anyway, sorry to hear you're leaving GP. You should drop in once a while to check on everyone like I do (and make sure no one changes your avatar!) - don't have to talk about games. You can just visit the General Chat and Funhouse boards.
