Title: Quality Wireless Router
Post by: Adrock on February 19, 2009, 07:37:30 PM
Okay, so I need one, a good one. I ordered a modem already so I don't have to lease Comcast's crummy modem.

Also, apologies to Kairon and others who I added to the Wii ages ago when I planned on originally getting high speed internet but never played against online. I guess we'd actually need some games to play online. Am I right? Hahahahahahahaha.... okay.

I used at my other apartment the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router Model Number WRT54G.
It works well.

If you're using comcast you will most likely need to use their modems so be careful. Also it's recommended to lease a modem since you won't be screwed if yours breaks on you, if your leased comcast modem would break they will send you a new one no questions asked. But for wireless routers Linksys, Netgear, Apple Airport/Apple Time Capsule(It's pretty much a Airport with a built in harddrive if you want to back up your files over the network) are usually the top brands. I usually avoid D-link routers.

I'm on Comcast with a Netgear WGR614.  Does its job.

I have the AirPort Extreme, it works great for everything except the DS as it only does WPA, not WEP. I can't wait until I get my new computer next month so I can take advantage of the 802.11n.

Yeah tha sucks hey insanolord. I tried setting it to WEP transitional but the DS reckoned that was WPA. So my network is just invisible with MAC filtering.

My problem with leasing Comcast's modem is that it's $9.80 a month. The Linksys modem I ordered (which got universally good reviews) was $64.99 on Amazon. If my modem lasts longer than 7 months, and there's really no reason why it shouldn't, I actually save money.

For the router, what works best for playing online games (mainly on Wii/DS, but I also plan on getting a PS3 this year)? Most routers do the trick surfing the internet. I bought my mom a Linksys Rangeplus doodad router last year because she said she didn't care about the brand, she just wanted wireless internet. It works and my brother doesn't seem to have too much trouble playing 360 online. I'm just trying to settle on the best router.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far!

Buffalo gives you AOSS for the DS. I've never used their wireless routers but their other wifi products have worked well.

I've had "lagless" Brawnline matches, friends and anonymous.  But you need to make some manual adjustments first.  How's that?
