Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 149: Ladies Night
« on: September 11, 2014, 08:51:29 PM »
Does anyone know the song before the Bayonetta 2 segment?

Ack, I can't believe I forgot to include the song info in the show notes this week. Sorry. They're included now.

Anyway, the song is a remix of Anamaguchi's "Prom Night". The remix was done by Lindsey Lowend. It's part of the 3 track Prom Night EP.

You can download it for free on SoundCloud at https://soundcloud.com/anamanaguchi/prom-night-lindsay-lowend?in=anamanaguchi/sets/prom-night-2014-single

TalkBack / Re: Multiple New Smash Bros. Characters Confirmed
« on: September 11, 2014, 03:55:25 PM »

R.O.B. has been unlocked and confirmed.

Thanks for the heads up! I actually watched a Twitch streamer unlock him about an hour ago as well. I've updated the story reflect that R.O.B. is confirmed. After he was unlocked, the streamer said that the message on the screen (in Japanese) stated that all fighters had been unlocked.

TalkBack / Re: Burden of the Silent Majority
« on: September 04, 2014, 04:45:26 PM »
My apologies for how I worded that. Didn't mean for it to have such a mafia shakedown-esque tone.

The point I was trying to get across is that an awful lot of this sort of editorial has cropped up, and not for the noble purpose of gaming inequality. Not entirely at least.

I'm saying that Gender Equality is being used as a smokescreen to avoid one journalist having to call out another on the question of ethical reporting.

Also, at one point in my post, I typoed the word "recuse". Can't edit that 'cuz of the talkback thing.

I still respect that this even has a talkback thread, as most of these editorials that have cropped up disable the comments.

Also, I just noticed Karl typed a reply. I'm looking forward to this and will address it's talking points in a separate post.

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad you weren't really threatening anybody.

I don't disagree at all that a lot of these editorials have cropped up specifically to generate clicks. It's sad that the Internet is beholden to the almighty click. I really wish it wasn't. But I think we should take our progressiveness however we can get it. I think we can all agree that this isn't click-bait. But even if it were click-bait, if this article (or any other) gets somebody to change their view on how they treat others, that's a victory in my book.

I also don't entirely disagree about the ethical reporting thing. It's in a highly gray area, given the relationships between parties involved. But shifting the discussion to ethical reporting is itself a smokescreen. If those personal relationships did not exist, the assholes making death threats would have just found another way to rationalize their hate. It's ingrained in their base level psychology. For some reason they feel threatened by Zoe Quinn and will use whatever they can dig up for character assassination purposes, and also to create a false sense of superiority over her. This is a very common tactic among sexists/racists/homophobes/etc.

Quote
See, Nintendo World Report, and Planet GameCube before it, was founded on the basis of highlighting the best in the world of Nintendo and the industry at large. It was always meant to be a beacon of fun and joyful discussion. Even when we have heated arguments, it’s boxed around the the ideal of civility, patience and kindness. The video game industry needs more places like NWR, especially lately, because the last year, and especially the last few months, have been pretty awful.

Then don't post this kind of article. You just contradicted your statement by doing this. This is not going to have any fun or joyful discussion. These rarely, if ever, have peaceful discussions.

Quit trying to poke holes in the argument. That's not what this is about, and by doing so you are not contributing to a peaceful discussion. Karl uses that founding basis as a jumping off point to describe why we must step up and speak out about these types of situations, even if they are uncomfortable and no fun.

Shame on you, ClexYoshi.

If people want to take an article like this and misinterpret it on PasteBin, that's their own prerogative. Fear of being blackballed or boycotted-against should not keep people from speaking up about a state of inequality. I don't think anybody working at NWR would be upset if the site got destroyed because it stood up for equal rights.

Here's my tactic.  I think that if you see somebody acting in a way that is counter to equality, they should be publicly shamed. Please read that carefully. I am not saying people should be attacked either verbally or physically. That will only raise their ire, and will result in no progress. I mean they should quite literally be shamed. They should be made to feel humiliated by their outdated beliefs and conscious acts of wrong-doing.

When you see somebody acting improperly, maybe you can be indirect about shaming them. Ask them “How old are you?”. I forget who told me this tactic, but it was in regards to gay rights, as a lot of people who don’t understand and/or support gay rights are old. They might not even realize what they are doing is wrong. They’re simply holding on to “the way things have always been”. Calling somebody out and shaming them by asking how old they are is an instant way to tell them that they aren’t being progressive in their thoughts.

TalkBack / Shovel Knight Interview with Yacht Club Games
« on: August 05, 2014, 08:25:39 AM »

We all love it, so we decided to talk to the masterminds themselves about the wonderful creation that is Shovel Knight.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/interview/38204/shovel-knight-interview-with-yacht-club-games

After giving Shovel Knight a perfect 10, we can't stand on the sidelines and simply watch Yacht Club master the art of NES game creation. Pooling questions from the NWR staff, Aaron asked Ian Flood and David D'Angelo from Yacht Club Games about the process of making Shovel Knight, as well as their post-release plans. Hope you enjoy!

X3! Finally! It's one of those games that seemed to be lost to history, due to the difficulty of emulating some of those late-era chips included in SNES carts.

First up, Neal and Zach discuss Donkey Kong Country 3D Returns as this episode's Game of the Week! It just became available as a Club Nintendo Platinum reward, but is it good enough to claim? Hopefully we can help you come to a solid conclusion.

Then, Aaron chimes in with an interview with David D'Angelo and Ian Flood of Yacht Club Games about the supremely awesome Shovel Knight! It's only the best game ever, so this is sort of a big deal.

Finally, Daan is back with another installment of his quiz show. I hope your brain is ready for this.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 141: The "ua" Died Years Ago
« on: July 15, 2014, 07:22:15 AM »

Between anime games and Godzilla, Connectivity is turning Japanese this week!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/38066/episode-141-the-ua-died-years-ago

America's birthday has come and gone, and Connectivity is back running at full-steam despite the intrusion of Bastille Day. This week, we have two regular segments and one bonus for you to enjoy.

First up, Scott, Alex, and Josh talk about what they've been playing. Turns out, the answer for most of them is anime games! They're great, but also not so great, and that's OK. After that, the three of them move into answering some recently received listener mail. Don't forget to submit your questions by clicking here.

Finally, if you're into giant monsters, you can stick around and listen to Zach and Jonny talk all about Godzilla, the King of All Monsters.

You can see the listener mail link above, so please submit some! Also, if you have a moment we'd love some more ratings and reviews on iTunes.

TalkBack / Stick it to The Man! Review
« on: June 30, 2014, 03:17:00 PM »

It's a real head trip.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/37970/stick-it-to-the-man-review

Going in to Stick it to The Man!, I didn’t really know what to expect. Developed by Zoink! Games, this old school adventure game mixes light platforming elements with a heavy dose of humor. The result is an enjoyable romp through a bizarre world made of paper and stickers that shares more than a little in common with Double Fine’s brilliant Psychonauts.

Stick it to the Man! puts a lot of focus on narrative. The dialogue, written by comic scribe Ryan North, is the crux of the game, and it delivers. The various characters are quite unique, and their thoughts and comments are usually funny. The voice acting is also outstanding, and I found myself cracking up at the game regularly. If you played Psychonauts, you will find a lot of similarities in both character design and dialogue. The consistently bizarre, often self-referential dialogue drove me to search every nook and cranny in the game to be sure I left no bits of humor unfound.

Were it not for the superb writing and voice acting, Stick it to the Man! would very easily become dull. There is little challenge in the platforming elements, and most of the puzzles are quite easy to solve. In the rare case that you do get stuck, a solution can typically be found with brute-force by trying every item in your inventory (the game won’t let you use an item in the wrong spot) and interacting with every possible character. All of this is fine, as the gameplay is focused on delivering plot points and hilarious banter.

In between jumping on platforms, Ray can interact with his cardboard world by using his powers to tear away pieces of scenery and to fly across the screen by grabbing on to the thumb tacks scattered about the environment. He can also peel items off the scenery and turn them into stickers, which he can then place in other areas to solve puzzles and slip by enemies. Each level contains a few areas which are focused on character interaction and puzzle solving. In between these sections are areas that focus on platforming, which involves Ray needing to get by “The Man’s” black-suit wearing agents.

Stick it to the Man! is the perfect game to sit down and relax with, to the point that it sometimes feels more like an interactive cartoon than an actual video game. It’s enjoyable from start to finish, and easy to digest in a weekend with about four or five hours of gameplay. The only major downside to this game is that after you go through it once you will have pretty much seen it all, leaving little incentive to come back to go through it all again.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 137: Zack-Off
« on: June 14, 2014, 03:20:46 AM »

We hop in our Wayback machine and visit the magical land of E3 2004.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/37572/episode-137-zack-off

Do you smell it in their air? That certain stench of body oder and Doritos that signals the passing of this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. We've already give you our thoughts on this year's show, so this week we have something a little bit different. Rather than talk E3 2014 to death, we're going back in time. Join Neal as he sits down with Mike and Jonny to discuss the events of the now decade-old E3 2004. It was an awesome year for the show, and now you can relive it just like you did back then.

After that, stay awhile and listen to Zack and Zach talk about game collecting. The older will pass knowledge down to the younger, who will eventually grow strong enough to strike down his master and claim the role of Zack-prime. It just won't happen on this week's show.

We're gearing up for a big listener mail segment, but we need your help! E3 is the perfect time to submit your questions and comments. I promise we'll answer them on the show. You can submit them by clicking here. And if you have a moment to spare we'd also really appreciate it if you could rate and review the show on iTunes.

Podcast Discussion / E3 2014 Reaction
« on: June 10, 2014, 05:06:03 PM »

Our thoughts about the 2014 E3 Digital Event!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/37752/e3-2014-reaction

Welcome to this special episode of Connectivity! Today, we are discussing our reactions to the pretty much insane Nintendo Digital Event. Mike, Scott, Alex and Zach discuss Yoshi's Woolly World, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Zelda, Smash Bros., Splatoon and everything else that was announce and talked about. Be sure to let us know what you thought about the event in the comments! We'll see you later this week with more coverage.

Mega Man X3! Be still my heart! I thought we would never see that game released on VC because of the difficulty emulating the extra chips that were included on that cartridge. This makes me so incredibly happy, because I never got a chance to fully experience this entry in the series. Will buy day 1, and I might go ahead and buy MMX2 just to complete the trilogy on my Wii U.

No Mega Man Soccer, no buy. ;)
And this summer would have been the perfect time to release it, thanks to the World Cup. What a bummer. Oh well. I'll just play MMX3 instead.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 136: I Don't See Kerfuffle
« on: June 01, 2014, 08:59:00 AM »

We gaze into our crystal koopa shell to tell you what will happen at E3 2014.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/37570/episode-136-i-dont-see-kerfuffle

Like a rocket from the crypt, it's episode 136 of Connectivity! We are in the final count down to the 2014 Electronics Entertainment Expo, or "E3" as the kids call it. Seeing as no real news is ever released at this time of year, we're going to give you pseudo-baseless speculation! We've got some fresh off the dome predictions on what's going to happen with the Nintendo Figurine Platform, Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS, the next entry into the Legend of Zelda series, the new mystery 3DS game, Yarn Yoshi, Metroid, and more!

And if you're into that Nontendo thing, we have a brief segment from Alex about Watch_Dogs. Maybe the Wii U version will eventually be released… maybe not.

Speaking of E3, with the big show on the horizon, now is the perfect time to submit us your questions and comments by clicking here . We'd also really appreciate it if you would take the time to rate and review our show on iTunes.

TalkBack / Re: Mario Kart 8 Hands-on Preview
« on: May 05, 2014, 01:03:55 PM »
I would bet good money that the reason battle mode arenas aren't in this game is due to time constraints. This game is already coming out later than they would have liked, and putting battle mode on standard tracks likely saved them a lot of development time that would have been required to develop brand new, anti-grav friendly, arenas.

If so, hopefully we will get some proper battle arenas via an update or DLC.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 132: I Send A Robot
« on: May 04, 2014, 04:34:11 PM »

We're talking E3 2014 on this week's show y'all!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/connectivity/37335/episode-132-i-send-a-robot

Please stand clear of the doors and keep all children seated as we begin episode 132 of Connectivity. This week we have one big topic to cover: Nintendo's plans for the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2014. Do they think the Fils-A-Mech will crush his lowly competitors? Or will his robot body not be ready? Well, you'll obviously have to listen to find out. And then we'll need to actually see our predictions come true when the show actually starts. So it's going to be awhile. Just remain seated and think happy thoughts, and we'll arrive before you know it.

Unfortunately, the Curse of Corrupt Audio Files struck this week's second segment, leaving it with only two-thirds of an actual conversation. We're really sorry about that. If the missing audio can be recovered, we'll be sure to add the segment to a future episode.

If you have a moment, please send us your questions and comments by clicking here. We love to hear them, and will answer them on the show! Also, please rate and review the show on iTunes to help us grow.

This is great. I traded in my copy of New Super Mario Bros U to buy Pikmin 3. Now I can get it back for free. Or I guess I could get Wii Party U... nah.

TalkBack / Re: All Star Wars Video Games No Longer Canon
« on: April 29, 2014, 08:47:16 AM »
So if Rogue Squadron is now non-canon does that mean that the Attack on the Death Star, the Battle of Hoth, the Battle of Endor and the Strike on the Core of Death Star II are all non-canon?

Don't be facetious. Things that happened in the films are still canon. What's non-canon (and has always technically been) is anything that happened outside the films. Rogue Squadron was in both the films and the EU, so the stuff that happened to them in the films is still canon, and the stuff that happened to them in the EU still isn't canon.

TalkBack / Re: All Star Wars Video Games No Longer Canon
« on: April 29, 2014, 08:38:50 AM »
I could care less about most of the EU being officially labeled as "non-canon" but I do take offense at Shadows of the Empire being retconed out. When Shadows launched it was an all-out media assault, the idea being that Shadows of the Empire was "everything but a movie". It was a book, a comic book, and a video game, among other things, and was pitched as canon. It's a shame that they are going back on that now, since it's an excellent story.
