Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 595: Nuts About Ninjago

This is one of those games that’s legitimately great on the Wii U and loses so much on other consoles.  The game pad was awesome on it. The graphics while not great had a dirty muddy ugly look which fit the art style. On other consoles it’s so sharp it just looks bad. Weird I know but many people swear by this game because despite rough edges it was great. In fact I think it’s a better resident evil style FPS than resident evil 7.

That's fine. Roast me if you want.

As a long time fan that listens to this great podcast at work, car anywhere and also has a family i would appreciated if a bit less cursing was used.

That's all. If he tells me to f off no i won't then thats fine. What can i do. I'll just listen to something else in those environments. But as a fan i would really appreciated it.

Oh and hey if you think cursing means your an adult then you have a rude awakening. You can be a Nintendo podcast for adults without the cursing. lol.

As a father I wish James would cut back on the bad words. I listen to pod cast in the car and while I take my kids to school and pick them up and all my other nintendo podcast are fine but then here’s Jane cursing every five minutes. I had to turn this episode off right now after like the 5th bomb in five minutes.

I’m not saying don’t curse at all but just a bit of restraint. You’re the only one in the group that curses this much by a wide margin.

I think it has to do with expectations and what the discussion focuses on. Either that, or James is trying to rival Jeff Gerstmann for terrible taste in video games.  ;)

his taste is different for sure. which is fine. I like that he brings a different perspective than most people. But i think i'm safe when i say that the majority of people think very highly of Link between worlds.

So him saying things like they are fact instead of opinion is weird. More so when you hear him talk about an average game and try to find positives. lol.

I've long explained the problems in Zelda on 3DS, and I stand by it. I get that people like it, but it's disingenuous to claim I haven't made a good case for why I think it's a bad Zelda game.

I don't need to justify Kid Icarus, Nintendo did it for me when they acknowledged the control scheme is so poor they needed to ship it with a stand. The game is one of the few that physically feels BAD to play.

I don’t think you’ve made a good case at all. You just gave your opinion of why you think it’s a bad game but that doesn’t make it a good case.

Kid Icarus controls do have a bigger learning curve than most games but that doesn’t mean they were broken. The stand was more because the weight of the 3DS could cramp your hands but that had to do more with the nature of holding the system while using the touch screen so often shifted weight to your wrist.

Even if the controls were divisive that doesn’t mean the game itself was bad. The game was great is just some people loved the controls and some didn’t. Looking at the average review score I would say probably more loved it than not.

I’m not attacking your opinions. But I do find it odd that you’ll play a niche game with tons and tons of flaws and you’ll admit to the fact but also kinda defend it and look at the positives.

Then games that are clearly clearly much better you’ll just go all in on it.

I think Syrenne scared me away from Octopath.

Obviously is an opinion but i got scared too. lol.

But afterwards i asked a bunch of people and did research and well i couldn't find a lot of people who shared her opinion. Weird.

I have the game and im at the start so we'll see.

The Syrenne feedback scared me. I didn’t want a repeat of bravely default 1 and what happened in chapter 5.

So I posed this question in a forum and everyone said that nah the game is pretty management and no real bs. I’m so confused now. Lol.

I guess I’ll find out.

It’s weird how James and Syrenne can be so criticial of good/great games sometimes like Octopath and and Zelda on 3DS yet almost defend and excuse crappier games. Is almost like they gravitate to niche games that reviewed so so and find value in them and other popular games that they have nitpicks with they go all in.

Not attacking them just an observation over the years.

James Kid Icarus a bad game? Lol. Come on. Come on now. You jumped the shark with Zelda Link between worlds but come on man.

Megaman 1 is tough but not as much as you’d think. It has some bs sections later in the game but generally areas where you think is impossible to not get hit you can master them.

No not in 100 hours or even 10 hours. Really just replay an area for 30 mins to an hour and you’ll master them.

Doesn’t take long at all honestly. Even if you abuse save states to try a particular tricky area to improve.

40
Second opinion? More like a more accurate review. The last review was awful.

Yeah i personally noticed right away that the speed was different and probably a hybrid of Melee and smash 4.

Also the rolling and dodging is very noticeably changed as well. Some characters pretty much were mostly the same as smash 4 just faster and some were much different. It's still early though so lots will change.

I'm pretty sure smash Ultimate has more in common with 4 than any smash before had in common with it's predecessor but from what i played and saw it's not smash 4. It has it's own feel. You can just look at it and see it's much faster. Not melee but faster for sure.

Calling it smash 4 is a bit of a disservice. I played tons of smash 4 and while at first glance it gives off that look they made tons of changes plus sped up the game.

No one's jumping on anything. Just like you're free to offer an opposing view to what the crew or other poster say, people are free to offer an opposing view to what you or I say. There's no hostility, so there's no reason to take things so personally.

i'm not taking anything personally. Im just using history as my guide and in the past when i've brought this up it didn't go all that well.

Anyways doesn't mean i'm not a fan of the show. Been listening to it for years. I always say that. But this is one of those times where they really started with the whole this crap sucks this will fail this isn't very good blah blah blah.

I generally prefer a bit more balance in a conversation rather than be beat over the head on how this will suck and fail based on very early announcements.

I mean i still remember James very pessimistic view on Splatoon and well that turned out all right.

I know I’m going to ruffle some feathers again but you guys are so damn pessimistic. I mean you start with everything glass half empty.

I also disagree that n64 games have aged bad. Sure some of them did and a lot might have early rough 3D mechanics but tons are still great to play and upscalled actually look pretty damn good.

But just like crapping on the nintendo online I guess the n64 comments are super low hanging fruit. No real anayaist other than to start off pissing on everything.

Sure the service could be disappointing and we only get those nes games but no one knows yet. I for sure would be Cautious but not outright start crapping on it like you guys.

They touched on this several times in the episode, but what they announced is basically what we already knew or expected. If there was some big news to materially change the package Nintendo is going to offer at the launch of this service, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to sit on it: the time to give us such news was last week. What they announced is what this service is likely going to be for the foreseeable future. If it gets a lot better with SNES games (and beyond) and other cool stuff, it's not going to be any time soon. I spend a lot of time playing first-party games online and would really like cloud saves, so $20/year is fine for me, but I don't think the general sentiment among the RFN crew is necessarily unwarranted.

I do think it's a bit strange to devote an entire listener mail segment to this though. Again, what they announced is basically what we already knew (outside of some details like cloud saves and Nintendo's comment on Virtual Console), and these guys have gotten plenty of punches in about most facets of the service over the past year. Doesn't seem like  something that deserves an hour of discussion.

Yeah I mean it never goes well when I call this out cause sometimes both fans and crew jump on me but yeah I felt it was pretty pessimistic.

I was enjoying Bravely Default 1 before that bs ending. I'm not only stuff now but i get killed by everything. Trash ending ruined the whole game. I felt robbed. Like i wasted my time. Worst ending i've ever experienced.

Hey Greg i always wondered.

How did you get so into american football being from the UK?

Just curious. Also is the sport picking up steam over there or is it really difficult to find other fans of the sport?

The NFL was first broadcast on British TV shortly before I was born in the early 1980s; my older brother was a kid at the time and he became a huge fan of the Chicago Bears. Once I was old enough to have some sort of vague appreciation for the sport, he encouraged me to pick my own team to support; the Bills at that time were running a no-huddle offense very successfully, I thought they looked cool, and the rest is history.

NFL fandom seems a fair bit more commonplace here today than it was back in the 1990s, presumably because of the transformation of the media landscape over that time helping to provide much more exposure for the sport, especially online.

Awesome. All these years loved listening to you guys and your football talk and always wondered how you got into it. Thanks!
