What are you backing on KickStarter/Indiegogo/etc?
« on: March 07, 2020, 11:22:08 PM »
KickStarter is a weird beast.

Frankly, I don't really like what the platform has (mostly) become, and it feels like a lot of the successful projects coming out of it don't really match the spirit of why the site was first created... however, there is still cool, independent stuff getting released there if you look around, including stuff that convinces a skeptic like me to pony up some cash in advance to see the idea come to fruition.

Presumably, I'm not the only one here who has backed a few things that are currently active on KickStarter - if there is something that left you excited, whether related to gaming or art or music or some other media, take a minute and spread the word about it!

(I'll post again tomorrow talking about what I've got backed and am excited about.)

Somehow, I never got into checking Indiegogo - any cool projects there lately worth talking about?

I'm pretty much done with crowdfunding platforms at this point. Mighty No. 9, Indivisible, and Shenmue 3 did a pretty good job of proving the value of game publishers.

Allegedly, Yooka-Laylee still has DLC coming...someday...and Bloodstained has DLC allegedly coming soon, but the only active project I still have on KS is Soul Saga, one of the 1st projects I ever backed. It just entered early access on Steam and the dev is very active online, so I'm sure we'll see that completed someday.
There was a Signature here. It's gone now.

...

Yeah, I don't feel like the platform is at all a good idea for video games. Development cycles usually take too long and the attached risk tends to be very high.

Comics/graphic novels and board games, on the other hand, are both pretty solid items to support via crowd-funding. I've done a bit of both, and typically have been happy with the results.

Right now I'm backing two active projects on KickStarter:
* Hunker (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/paperwilds/hunker-a-game-of-woodland-friendship-under-the-falling-snow) is a board game about animals hunkering down winter, and competing for the resources they'll need to make it through safely. The art design here is super cute, the concept is interesting, and it's designed by a NWR forum member... so supporting this project was a pretty easy choice for me.
* Pyramid Quartet (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/looneylabs/pyramid-quartet) is a series of four portable games that use colorful stacking pyramids. We have a pretty big set of these pyramids at home already and enjoy playing different games with them; some are super luck-heavy and don't appeal to me at all, but others are more strategic. Having a dedicated box for one or two of my favorites is very appealing, especially since we already know what we're buying into.

I really only back comic books

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/offworlder-by-mike-baron-and-jordi-armengol/x/15764170#/

Which are you more excited for? I never watched The Expendables, and find the concept there maybe a bridge too far for my interests... but the Offworlder comic looks interesting.

What are some of your favorite comics that have been crowd-funded in the past? I don't back a lot of the, but have rather enjoyed the Moonshot series so far.

I’ve Kickstarted 13 projects, only two of them are video games: Shantae: Half-Genie Hero and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

The best one was probably the Purple Pillow. I pledged $999 which was the tier that included a queen sized Purple mattress. Basically, I was in the market for a new mattress and got two free pillows with it.

The “worst”one was probably the Blue Alpha Gear Hybrid EDC belt. It’s a perfectly fine and usable belt. However, I also Kickstarted a different belt around the same time and I liked that one more.

I currently have one project I haven’t received yet. It was for a movie called Self-Help: A Serial Killer’s Guide to Life. Technically, I received it. The creator sent out a streaming link to the movie, but I haven’t watched it yet and the link may actually be dead now. I should get a download link or DVD at some point.

Otherwise, I’m waiting for the DLC for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. The main game was good.

I probably won’t be pledging to many projects from here on out.

I haven't backed a video game on Kickstarter in four or five years, but there are still a couple I backed that aren't finished. That's kind of what turned me off the platform.

I really only back comic books

Expendables has a killer creative team, so I am hyped for it. Here is every comic that I've backed:

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/graham-nolan-s-return-to-monster-island/x/15764170#/ I actually bought this one on Kickstarter, Graham Nolan is a great artist, I bought both books which were silver age style fun.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/iron-sights-graphic-novel/x/15764170#/ This was a gritty book that was a bit of a mess, sometimes intentionally. I liked it enough to back the sequel

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/jawbreakers-lost-souls-remastered/x/15764170#/ Same Author as Iron Sights, GIJoe with super powers, right up my alley.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/soulfinder-demon-s-match/x/15764170#/ Fastest turnaround on any project. I got the book four months after the campaign ended.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/jawbreakers-god-k1ng-graphic-novel/x/15764170#/ the sequel to Jawbreakers, the art and writing went up a notch. Probably my overall favorite.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/alternaween-2-newsprint-s-revenge/x/15764170#/ this was a fun project where you get a bunch of comics from Alterna Press for cheap, designed to give out at Halloween with candy.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/jungle-comics-1-by-chuck-dixon-and-kelsey-shannon/x/15764170#/ This book I got really fast, like three weeks, but I purchased it through In Demand several months after the campaign ended.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/thrilling-comics-murder-and-mayhem/x/15764170#/ this one didn't make it. Refunded.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/futurists-norah-s-saga-bass-reeves-comic-bundle/x/15764170#/ Just got this one a couple weeks ago. Fanstastic quality on the books, great art and story. Interesting fact, they are coming to Walmart in May, so check for a special display near your Walmart's magazine section!

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/doomkicker/x/15764170#/ Haven't got this one yet, been awhile.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/lonestar-heart-of-the-hero-redux/x/15764170#/ Haven't got this one yet, been awhile.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/iron-sights-2-psychos-graphic-novel/x/15764170#/ Haven't got this one yet, it should be shipping soon.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/garbage-man/x/15764170#/ This one didn't make it. Refunded.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/twelve-days-of-alterna/x/15764170#/ This was a Christmas sale.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-expendables-go-to-hell-graphic-novel/x/15764170#/ Supposed to ship in May, but these projects often get pushed back a few months.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cash-grab-the-graphic-novel-by-cecil/x/15764170#/ This one is a trip.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/downcast-wrize-fall/x/15764170#/ Looking forward to this one.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/offworlder-by-mike-baron-and-jordi-armengol/x/15764170#/ This is the second try for this campaign, I hope they make it this time.

Crowdfunding always feels high-risk to me.  I only back projects where I'm already familiar with the person/people behind the project.  I don't like ones where the premise is some cool gadget that they've only built a prototype for.

That being said, this was something I backed.

I've backed three things.

Genki Bluetooth adapter for Switch, which is great, and I actually have used it more for my PC, which has not native bluetooth support. I highly recommend it if you want wireless audio on Switch.

Flipgrip is nice, but I don't use it much since I play more docked. Interestingly, I've given it a lot of miles as a joycon grip and no one has really complained when they use it.

Last one is also Genki, their new portable dock they are developing. Super excited for this one as it is a nice portable/second dock option. We can then play on the second television in the house or easily back it for travel. Its hit a delay due to the corona virus, but they have a track record and are clearly communicating with packers like they did with the delays last year when the storms threw off their production schedule.

So I'm 3-for-3 on my backings. I have watched a few without backing and some of them I am very glad I did not back. Don't think I will ever back an actual game on the platform as those are fraught with problems.
