General Gaming / Re: Biggest Gaming Regrets
« on: February 09, 2014, 10:52:56 PM »
About five years or so ago eStarland got a complete copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga in stock for $205, and I saw it as soon as it went live. At the time that was on the high end of what it was going for, but now I seriously wish I'd jumped on it when I had the chance.

Other biggest regret, I used to have a habit of playing games partway through and then moving on to something else. I did that with Final Fantasy 7 when it first came out, and quit before Aeris died. By the time I got back to playing it that point had well been spoiled, which always made me kind of sad.

There's a flash game with a similar premise called Perfect Balance. At first I thought this was what the article was about.

I second the request for raising the Mii Plaza limit.  I imagine the reason for it is still based in the original idea of streetpass, that people in large Japanese cities would get some passes every day and gradually make their way through the games, and the games themselves are designed and balanced to use up to ten miis at once.  So if you're in that kind of situation the 10 limit isn't that big of a deal.
But if like lots of Americans if you don't live in a giant city and are lucky to get a few passes a week and use the relays to actually get passes in large chunks the 10 mii limit is amazingly irritating. I might go to the mall (which has multiple Nintendo Zones) and hit a couple of Starbucks on the way once every week or two, if that. And of course I want to hit as many zones as I can while I'm out to make the most of it, but that means sitting down and clearing everything out multiple times, and that time really starts to add up, *especially* with the new batch of games.
I don't understand why the extra Mii data can't just be stored in 10-mii batches. If you do the 20-Mii trick and welcome the first batch then go into sleep mode while you get more passes and another batch lines up outside, it tells you that you have people waiting for you. So why can't it just store the data in those batches, and when you welcome in your first batch it immediately tells you you have another batch waiting, and when you're done with the first batch you go deal with the second, and so on and so on.  There of course has to be some reasonable limit, or maybe a time limit before the miis get bored waiting in line and go home or something.  I'm in no way shape or form a programmer or engineer, but something like that can't be *that* hard to implement (unless it actually is...)

There needs to be some kind of campaign to Nintendo to remove that limit, or store the extras for later use somehow.  With the new Mii Plaza games going through all of them is not an insignificant amount of time. I went to multiple Nintendo Zones today and it took forever. I'm not sure I want to even bother doing it all again tomorrow.

I got two sets of Streetpasses at Barnes and Noble, but I was walking around and browsing for a while.

So does that mean two of them on the second set were wasted because of the 10 limit? Or did you sit down and clear out the first set first?

One of my biggest gaming regrets is not picking up all the games when they were being clearanced out for dirt cheap. Oh how I want Jack Bros...but not for $300...

Do these updates delete material from older updates that's no longer relevant? At file sizes this big it won't be long before people with Basic systems run out of room for updates. =/

I have it going on my computer and Wii U and the Wii U stream skipped from the beginning of Donkey Kong to the end of X.  It's like 8 minutes ahead now.

2001 was the first E3 I was able to get in to too.  You are so right about them being a lot more lax about letting people in back then (and for the next few years after that too).  That year a friend of mine worked for 3DO and he had gotten some guest passes, and that year if you had a guest pass you just got in, no questions asked.  People were putting that they were King of the Mushroom Kingdom and things like that for their occupation, it was hilarious. In my delusions of grandeur, for the whole show I was carrying around an NES cart of Super Mario Bros. and a gold Ocarina of Time, *just in case* I ran into Shigeru Miyamoto.  Then on the second or third day I was in one of the back rooms watching a Smash Bros. Melee demo, and guess who just walks in! I still have those autographed carts in ziplocked bags.
And those foam GBAs and Gamecubes were awesome, I still have those too.  They may or may not be sitting out on a shelf...

I never got a survey either. I think this is dead. =/

It was originally released in 1987.  1990 is when they rereleased it without Mike Tyson.

Do you guys have TVs that don't allow you to turn off overscan?  That is a pain.  I like overscan off in general, but particularly for PC use.  Overscan slightly zooms the entire screen, so it can also add a bit of blur to text.

I apologize if this has nothing to do with overscan.  I don't yet have a Wii U, so I'm just assuming that would be the issue.

Yes that was the issue.  Nintendo didn't leave any "safe zone" like every other electronics maker anywhere ever has done, so if you have a tv that can't turn overscan off you were screwed.  Thankfully it's fixed now. I've barely used my Wii U since it came out because of that.

The option to adjust screen size is now available under "TV"

Yes! Thank you Nintendo!

I wonder if this update will also address the overscan issue...

Awesome except I have no idea how I'll find an Action Replay for the Gamecube at this point.  I've only ever played F-Zero AX once as it came out at a time when arcade games were no longer plentiful in North America.

I guess if I ever see a used Cube Action Replay I'll have a reason to buy it.

After a quick eBay perusal, all the old versions that let you put in your own codes are going for over $100...

I wish they had Super Metroid on the 3DS eShop, it would be fantastic to have all of the 2D Metroids on one system.

That's what sucks about being an early adopter for Nintendo hardware, I always miss out on the cool variants that come out later.

Wow, I had no idea this was out already since nothing from NintendoForce has shown up in my facebook newsfeed for a few weeks (haven't seen anything from NWR recently for that matter either).  Does anyone know if there's a fix for this?

Just realized that Nintendo has been spelt wrong in the topic title. I know good for me. That's all.

as a person who doesn't really have people to play local multiplayer with, the lack of online play in anything really sticks out like a sore thumb.

These games wouldn't be nearly as fun online as they are in a living room full of shouting people.  Sure, it'd provide SOME appeal, and you'd probably try them once or twice and then get bored.  I honestly don't think it would have been a good investment for Nintendo to bring these games online.  It's a bummer, but I understand their decision.

Except that if you don't have anyone local to play with then you can't play some of these games AT ALL since they don't have single player modes.  Apparently programming some AI was too hard for Nintendo.
