Building A Computer - $800 Budget - New Build for 2021!!
« on: May 24, 2010, 01:03:04 AM »
I'm trying to build a complete system for my girl and she gave me a budget of $800 to do it with.
I decided to try an AMD system this time since it seems to be cheaper for similar to Intel parts, but the only problem is that I've built her what I think is a pretty badass system (minus video card) but can't get it under $854 shipped.

This includes the motherboard, CPU, monitor, RAM, Kb/m, PSU, case, HDD & DVD Burner.

I actually typed this up once already and this stupid laptop I'm using somehow erased everything I've typed already, so I'm gonna keep it brief this time. This search happened mostly between Tiger Direct & Amazon.com

Motherboard/CPU bundle - $289
WD 1TB HDD - $95
Ultra 500W PSU - $40
Cooler Master Mid Tower Case - $38
View Sonic 23" Monitor - $189
Logitech Wireless Kb/M - $35
OCZ DDR3 PC3 10666 1333 Mhz RAM (8GB) - $138
Samsung 22x (DL?)DVD Burner - $20

Can you guys help me build a bad ass computer for $800 shipped?
I've shown you what I've found so far, but I haven't even included a video card that does dual monitor support.

I also found this on Frys.com ($900+tax)
http://www.frys.com/product/6060268?site=sa:PC%20Computer%20Pod:Pod1

What do you want to do with this computer?

Do you have an Operating System?

An easy way to save money would be to use a smaller HD. Unless you're storing a lot of HD movies.

I will be doing everything* on this computer.

streaming videos, games, multi-monitor multi-tasking, websurfing, work.

if possible, I might even try the Dolphin Emulator.

*nothing that justifies a 6core processor
but she wanted a computer better than my C2Q 3GB DDR2 machine.
So I think the motherboard and processor are most flexible as that is what cost the most.

Something that uses DDR3 though and is atleast a Quad core(AMD) is preferrable.

I figure if i go with a QuadCore AMD I can also throw in a multi-monitor video card and come back to where I am now, which is only slightly over budget.

One thing you can do is cheap out on is the monitor. To be frank, that monitor is way over priced for the features your getting and it will look like ass.

For slightly more or less depending on how you shop around, try this monitor. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=W2353V-PF&oe=utf-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=7480986633198274655&ei=1Mj6S8OjLJfONJLi1YMI&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CBcQ8wIwAA#

it's the same one as mine, but what you really want to do is look in to the range. Contrast ratio going to be the biggest factor second to resolution.

That PSU is a little overkill, but not knowing your video card gives you a fair bit of wiggle room.

You are right about not being able to justify that six core cpu. Unless she is doing Video Let's plays, that's alot of wasted power. In a sense she will be future ready, but with double digit cores in the very near future, why bother trying to read the tea leaves.

Simple fact is that if she wants better, she is going to have to spend more and with only the onboard video, that system is going to be lopsided as hell. Forget games on it.

You can also cut back on the RAM to 4GB and get another 4 at a later date if it is found she really needs it. Harddisk wise, get a Samsung SpinPoint of some sort which comes in a little cheaper, quieter with no drop in performance.

The thing about the RAM is that 4GB of DD3 cost the same everywhere I've looked (which was only 3 places) as the 8GB of OCZ I found somewhere else.

4GB of OCZ on Tiger Direct & Amazon cost the same amount as the 8GB and they were from the same manufacturer.

about the video card, I was gonna upgrade that for her later (it's sorta my computer since I'll use it more, but she's paying for it) to maybe a cheap multi-monitor Nvidia card for now and then get a beefier one in the fall when I have more extra money.

Have you checked out Tech Report's Spring 2010 System Guide?

checking now. thanx

Ok. If I take out the CPU/Mb combo I had (-$289)
and use the the ones suggested in that article that vudu linked me to instead

Gigabyte  Socket ATX Motherboard GA-770TA-UD3 - $101
AMD  Athlon II X4 630 95W AM3 2MB 2800MHz Retail - $97
WD 1TB HDD - $95
Ultra 500W PSU - $40
Cooler Master Mid Tower Case - $38
View Sonic 23" Monitor - $189
Logitech Wireless Kb/M - $35
OCZ DDR3 PC3 10666 1333 Mhz RAM (8GB) - $138
Samsung 22x (DL?)DVD Burner - $20

Actually puts me under budget @ $753

I'm looking at that monitor, and it's really expensive on Amazon, really cheap on Overstock (Refurbished) and $10 more on a site called allaboutcomputersky.com
I don't know who they are and I'm not so sure on refurbished products, bit the monitor sounds really good on paper and I would love to switch it out.

What can you tell me about the allaboutcomputer site and/or refubished products in general? Especially from Overstock.com.

Ok, I need a Dual monitor Video card, preferrably with as much fast ram as possible

I was thinking a

Radeon HD 5670 Video Card - 1024MB DDR5

vs
GeForce GT 240 1GB DDR5

both for about $110 each.
Which is the better video card specifically for gaming and dual monitor support?

I've also decided to get the LG monitor and save an extra $20
Which brings my total down to under $850 shipped

I suppose I could get less DDR3 ram and save some extra money, but I'm not for sure making this purchase till next week or the week after, so maybe somethings go on sale in the meantime.

You should avoid tigerdirect.com as much as you can. Newegg is much  better. Also, while I've always been a supporter of AMD, Intel just keeps kicking their ass lately. Also the Caviar Blue version of the 1TB WD drive is $69.99 (free shipping) on Newegg if you're quick enough, deal ends at midnight (Pacific, I assume). You're best off using 2 HDDs, one smaller one for your OS, and a huge one for everything non-system related. Both of those video cards are kind of low-end, though DDR5 is nice. I'm telling you man, just go to Newegg. You could easily build a beast of a system for (much) under $800 shipped.

I'm not looking for a hi-end video card right now.

if it can play Recent games decently and handle multiple things on 2 different screens at the same time then I am happy.

But if you think you can piece together a (better)complete system for about $800 shipped, then please, show me what you've come up with. Thatt is exactly why I made this thread after all, to see who cold build it better or atleast improve upon what I have.

I also have a 50GB HDD at my house that I planned on installing the OS on, so the 1TB is intended for media and non-essential program storage.

Go for the refurbished since it will be better than your current choice in monitor. Seriously, you can do better way than your current choice.

I would expect some staining/scuff marks though from the extra handling, otherwise it should be pretty sweet.

The 5670 card is fairly low power, so you shouldn't worry about having enough juice with that card. A 5970 is another story.

Try the handy power supply calculator at NewEgg http://educations.newegg.com/tool/psucalc/index.html

Don't go too cheap on power supplies.  They might very well blow out.  Take a good look at the review ratings before you buy one (the one you have listed is getting some pretty crap ratings).

I use an Athlon II X4 640 (essentially the same as the 630 but 100 mhz faster) and I like it...I'm not a heavy CPU user and I upgraded from an Athlon X2 4600+ though so I haven't noticed too much of a difference so far.  I'm also using a Radeon 4850 which is hard to recommend for resolutions above 1680*1050 or if you care about future Direct X support, but depending on your needs I still think it's one of the best "bang for your buck" graphics card deals.  I got mine for $75 after rebate which was awesome.

I really have nothing useful to add to the discussion aside from completely disagreeing with whoever said Intel is kicking AMD's ass right now.  Intel was the clear leader when they came out with their Core 2 Duo chips, but since then things have changed especially in terms of building a budget PC.  I think an Athlon II X4 or a cheap Phenom II provides a better price/performance ratio depending on your needs.  But even so, AMD's AM3 socket is a lot more future-proof then any of Intel's sockets and for me that's important.  I intend for my mobo to last a while.

Not to mention the fact that AMD owns ATI and in my opinion they have completely destroyed nVidia in recent years (pretty much ever since the 4800 architecture).

Also don't try to save money with the PSU; read reviews, calculate your power needs, and buy a good one.  I haven't looked at the one you've chosen yet but I just wanted to restate when MeaByte said because it is very important.

You guys may have noticed that I never put up a link to the ram i was gonna get. you might have also noticed that it was 8GB of DDR3 for $137<2x4GB>, which is pretty much the same price as the exact same ram at 4GB (which cost ~$127 <1x4GB>).

So basically I got double the ram for the same price. That was the biggest hookup on this whole system. I'll post a pic & a link just as soon as I'm guaranteed it shipped.

With mine, I ordered an 8GB kit, and they only sent me 4GB. Problem is that they meant for it to be a 4GB kit, but they never specified that. The Product Description showed 2x 4GB chips and listed it as 8GB kit.

So after I received it, I called them, they tried to refund me for a return and give me a $10 credit. I told them to shove that refund where the sun don't shine and send me my other 4GB chip. The lady said she couldn't, so I had her put a supervisor on.

Part of my argument was that I could've gotten the exact same chip for cheaper ($120) from a different supplier if I only wanted 1x4GB, but I chose them because they were offering 2x8GB fir almost the same price.

After 10 minutes of debate and pointing out how the ad clearly states multiple times that it was an 8GB kit and the pic even shows 2x 4GB chips, he admitted defeat and is now shipping me a 2nd 4GB chip for free (otherwise it was false advertising).

4GB of DDR3 PC3-10666 1333MHz (Gold) normally sells for $127
I got 2x4GB (8GB total) of ^^^^ for $137!!!
You can't imagine the size of my grin after that conversation.

I will never have to worry about ram again, and I can always upgrade the CPU & Video Card again at a later date.

It is AMD 2.8Ghz Quad w/ 8GB Ram, a 1 GB AMD HD5670 & a 23" monitor
The cpu support goes up to 6 core and the ram expands upto 16GB

I think I did excellent for an $800 computer.

a comparable computer already manufactured would run about $1200-$1400 with a monitor when not on sale.

I can't imagine what I would be doing on that computer that would use up 8 GB of RAM.
but it's still expandable upto 16BG's, so I', sure I'll be ok.

The last computer I upgraded is maxed out at 3GB of DDR2 RAM. I made sure not to over look that when picking a motherboard this time, as building is still a learning experience for me(which was why I was asking advice for this build).

Here is the RAM I bought.

Amazon tried to argue that it was only 1x4GB chip and that that is what they sent.
But if you look at the pic, the model number and the Product description; the pic shows to chips, the model number cites it's a 4GB chip and the Product Description says 3 times that it is an 8GB kit.

You can see form the side that I couldn't gotten it cheaper from a different supplier, but I knew Amazon would have to honor their product description, pic and model number of their item listing, so I paid the higher price to get a better deal.

p.s. the listing is still up and worded exactly the same.
so if Someone else is looking for 8GB of RAM at barely over the price of 4GB of the same ram, there you go.

you could get a four pin molex to SATA power adapter.

I have no idea what that is, but I just decided to spend an extra $10 get an extra 50W, have the PSU be black to match the case and get an extra cable with 2 more SATA connectors on it.

Ultra LSP550 - $49.99 (normally $85)

I'm over budget by another $10 (plus shipping.... :( ) but this should complete the build and get here hopefully around the same time as the second chip of RAM.

I had no idea those existed, but I would've eventually needed 2 or more of them, so a new power adapter just simplifies things. More shipping now, less hassle later. thanx for pointing that out though. that might come in handy for my other computer.

Just another oversight I gotta avoid if I ever build another computer. The price of another lesson learned.

Looking for more advice.

Computer is now built and working fine, but now that I found a deal on a sound card (Amazing Deals thread) I was wondering if anyone had any links or advice towards a 5.1/7.1 surround system that is both cheap, quality & looks nice.

So far this is all I've found is: http://www.buy.com/retail/usersearchresults.asp?querytype=home&qu=5.1+surround&qxt=home&display=col
But I don't know if Frisby is a good brand or not.

edit: I should probably clarify that my motherboard already supports surround sound and the sound card just made me think about it.
Now I'm just looking for a good but cheap 5.1+ surround system that will work with my motherboard and looks good.

White: side  Black: rear  Yellow: c/sub
Red: mic  Green: output  Blue: input

I've never owned a surround sound system before, so all I need is the system right?

If you have a Best Buy nearby, get the one I mentioned in that thread. It's 7.1 - RocketFish branded, but it's a Creative X-Fi chipset, and it has built-in optical audio output. Some people say they have problems with drivers, but they are idiots and don't know anything about computers.

But I don't need a sound card. my motherboard supports 5.1 onboard.
I just want a competent 5.1 Surround System for a decent price.

or are you saying that I should have a dedicated sound card in place of the onboard surround?

Oh my bad, I kind of skimmed through and thought you were asking about a sound card. Nice, if that's a shot of your i/o board, then you already have optical output (and coaxial, but no one uses that, even though it's basically the same thing). It really depends on how much you're looking to spend. If you're using this as a media center, then go balls out and get a bad-ass system, if not, then just read some reviews.

give me recomendations. I don't want to spend more than $200 and preferably something under $150, but if it's good enough and fits the look and need, more money can go towards it.

PLEASE give me some links and recommendations.

I'll post a pic when my internet is back up later today, but my computer is also hooked up to my TV but I would like the system to also accept a dvd player and Wii input. Id like to have it all use the surround. Something similar the self-contained system that I linked to unless that wouldn't work for what I want to do.

As promised, here is the pic (room remodel is a slow work in progress)

Notice the computer monitor is not  near the computer, but the computer is instead near the TV.

Under the TV is the DVR box, DVD player & Wii (soon to be replaced with the Black Wii)
Those speakers are also temporary until I get a black set and that is also why I want a surround sound set.

the last couple of days my monitor has been having issues. Its a crt monitor and it used to be my dads, we've had it for years now. Anyhow i was working on it and suddenly the brightness kicks up. So, im like uh -oh. So i turn the brightness down. It looks fine, but its a bit weird that n ow what used to = 0 now equals the middle range. It works fine for a couple of days, then it up and cataracts again. This time messing with the monitor brightness has no effect. So, i have to get a new one, kinda shitty since it worked so well before. Other dying monitors went blurry before the brightness went haywire.

I just moved and rearranged my whole setup.

I really liked having a monitor next to the bed, but I also needed one for the desk, so now I have a 3 monitor setup in my room.

Monitor 1 & 3 are mirrored, one at the bed and one at the computer desk.
Monitor 2 is the TV in the middle of the 1 & 3

I'm gonna try and post a pic later after I figure out this router bridging and custom FW thing.

Three monitors and you mirrored two of them?! :(

I've been running three 24" Acer monitors for a few years now. I have them all running as one expanse through my SLI setup though. I pretty much require the space for business, though it does work pretty well when it comes to fun. Someday I'll buy a trio of super thin bezel screens and a nice connected stand.

I have to take pic, but the mirrored screens are on opposite sides of the room. one at the desk and the other at the foot of the bed. the TV is in the middle.

Excuse the mess.... still unpacking from the move.

but left monitor is for bed surfing, middle TV is for all media such as netflix, hulu, torrents, etc etc. Right monitor is mostly for work... maybe for gaming (once I get a better wired mouse & keyboard).

edit: I forgot to mention that i also have a dual mouse and keyboard setup too.
wired at the desk, wireless at the bed.

I have a question.

Since I have a dual Mouse/kb set up, I have a wired mouse and keyboard next to the computer plugged in through the dedicated mouse and kb plugs, and then a wireless mouse/kb next to the bed.

If I get a new wired m/kb that plugs in through the USB and is also Logitech like the wireless ones, will that cause interference?

p.s. My current keyboard is **** <number row keys & the Ctrl buttons don't work most of the time> and the mouse has a ball <I constantly have to lift the mouse and reset it's position on the pad to cover the entire screen... and that's not even trying to use the 2nd screen.>
Both the kb & mouse I'm looking at are USB as I don't think they make optical mice non-usb.

Here is the Kb/m combo I'm looking at

Kb: Both $59.99
Logitech Illuminated Ultra Thin Keyboard
Logitech G110 Gaming Keyboard (I don't need all the extra keys, but some of them may come in handy)

Mouse: $45.99
Logitech MX518 High Performance Gaming Mouse

But if anyone has any suggestions for cheaper, but quality illuminated keyboards and 3+ button mice.
Please feel free to shoot me a suggestion

I've used the Illuminated Ultra Thin before. I had it set up on my second machine for a while. It looks nice, but was way too thin for my tastes. The keys all felt shallow and had very little tactile feedback. Furthermore, the labels on popular keys began to wear off after only a few months of use. I've also used the MX518 and absolutely hated it. The buttons are placed inconveniently, the mouse is rather narrow, has an odd shape, and the DPI is painfully low for games and graphic design.

Given the price range of the components you listed, I'd suggest looking at Razer products instead. I haven't been able to find a better mouse/keyboard combo than the Lycosa and Deathadder. I've used them both on my main rig for about two years now. I don't think I could ever go back to anything else at this point. :)

Pretty much any peripheral you find nowadays will be USB (or Bluetooth). Usually you end up with a USB dongle for wireless even. That said, you can easily find USB to PS2 adapters. There's really no reason to do that however, unless you are completely out of USB ports. Though, you'd probably be better off getting a cheap hub then.

Waaay too many bad reviews for the keyboard, but I like what I've seen of that mouse. I've seen a pic of the mouse before, but I didn't know what it was called, so I wasn't sure where to start looking.

Oh, I have about 6-8 USB ports on the back of my computer and another 2 in the front.
I'm not using most of them, so USB ports is not an issue.

I'm more concerned if the wired USB m/kb will run interference with the wireless USB m/kb since they are both running through USB than if I have enough USB ports.

The bad reviews are all pretty silly though. Almost all them sound as if the user couldn't be bothered to disable (or properly setup) their macro keys.

You shouldn't encounter any issues. Modern operating systems can generally support multiple input devices without getting too confused about it.

Logitech is a good brand. That said, why are you looking at the "Gaming" subset? Stuff with that label is never as good as it's unlabeled or any other label variant. "Gaming" variants usually mean slapping more buttons on it regardless of usability or utility, lights and ridiculous gimmicks like adjustable weights. Even things like DPI modifiers for "Sniping" is asinine and will not make you a better player if you are not inherently good in the first place.

I only use a Logitech M505 and it's perfectly fine and wireless is your friend. Unless it's a vector based mouse, there is no "Lag" no matter how much the g4m3r 133t will trying to tell you otherwise. Freeing your mouse from that cord is one of the few things that will improve your game if nothing else, it's one less thing to drag around in a firefight.

As for the keyboard, don't fret too much over it too much. Get something IBM Model M like as a base line and you're set. There is little to gain from putting out for too many extra premium features. As long as it has full key set   keypad, a couple extra media keys for things like volume and eject, feels good in a test at the local shop, you have got it made.

If your going completely wireless, Unifying receivers is something to look at even if it there to make things tidy and allow you to place the receiver where you want for better reception.

Well let me state what I'm looking for again and then maybe you can point me towards something that fits that.

Full wired keyboard that is backlit. Media buttons is a definite plus.
Wired optical mouse with  3 buttons 2 top buttons, 2 side buttons and a clickable scroll wheel. ( by 3 buttons I meant the scroll wheel button and two side buttons. Top buttons where already assumed).

That is often very true, and not just with peripherals. That's why I'm such a fan of the specific Razer products I pointed out. They're super high quality with very little in the way of gimmicks. It's getting harder and harder to find keyboards at any price point with a normal layout and get tactile feedback.

I hate wireless mice and keyboards. Mice especially. They lag something horrible.

Yeah, I went through about 5 mice getting and returning until I found the upgraded version of the Deathadder for less then the previous version and a good price for what I wanted, I needed more then the stander set of buttons.  I have to say its a solid mouse in every sense of the word.  You could probably beat somebody with it and it be ok.  Responsive, the side buttons aren't the little type which I enjoy the size.  Its a very solid mouse.  I highly recommend it.  I can't help you on Keyboard.  I love my Natural Ergonomic 4000 for work where I'm typing all the time but it stinks for gaming.  Though I do have a Logitech G13 for WoW.  Before that I had the Saitek Pro Commander.  The Logitech mouse I own and like is no longer available.

But I really want a backlit keyboard that isn't likely to give me technical problems.
Really leaning towards the Logitech Illuminated, but I'm not against the Lycosa if the price is right.

Like I said, the Logitech is decent. I hate that the keys are shallow, but others might like it because of that. It makes touch typing so much more difficult for me. Be wary though, the key labels will wear out very quickly. They're not etched in or anything. Continuous use will see them fade over just several months. On the other hand, I've been using the Lycosa for about two years with absolutely no issues. It is a pricier keyboard, but I'm also extremely picky in what I like in keyboards. It has the right layout, the right feel to the buttons, I can remove the dumb wrist rest, plus it has added goodies like illumination, media keys, and a non-slip coating that I've really grown to appreciate. I'd take most of the bad reviews with a grain of salt, as it sounds as if most of the people simply don't know how to setup (or outright disable) the macro keys. ;)

Lycosa would match the mouse and they both would glow the same blue as my computer, so that would also be a nice touch.

It really comes down to can I find both a kb/m on sale, and that will heavily influence my decision.

BLAST FROM THE PAST!!!!

I can't believe it's been 10 years since the last computer build.... that doesn't seem right.
No... after looking at the build list, I've build a new computer since then... maybe 4-5 years ago.

Anyway, it's that time again. the build I had in this thread I had to dust off, as the computer downstairs took a crap. The 10yr old build isn't booting correctly, and I may mess with it to see if I can get it up and running again, but I figured that I might want to build another new computer, and just move my current one downstairs.

I know the general look of the case I want, full clear side, multi-color LED fans that I can switch on and off.

I haven't decided on a budget, or when this build would actually start... but just looking for some general ideas on case, chips, boards, ram, video card, cooling, etc etc.

I have no idea what's hot right now, or what to avoid or look out for.

I may or may not use this for gaming....
Definitely for media and multi-tasking. Ability to be more than capable for todays games would be nice.
Let's aim for $800 price tag on this and see where we end up.

edit:
Thanks to kraken I have found the perfect system for what I'm looking for.
Logitech Z-5500 THX-Certified 5.1 Digital Surround Sound Speaker System

Only problem is the price. Does anyone know where to get a really good deal on this or something very very similar?

Can I just say I'm still using this system. It's pretty awesome and sounds just as good today as it did originally.

Going for $1800/$2000+ NEW O_O

For price/performance, I'd recommend Ryzen 3600 or above. Just make sure when you get a motherboard, that whatever memory you get is on their qualified vendor list. It had been about a decade since I last did a build, so I figured memory is memory (as long as it's DDR4). Wrong! Things have gotten so finicky today that if you don't have exactly the right memory, it won't boot! Defintely threw me for a loop. :(

Ok, so I got the new Oculus Quest 2, which is very cool, but I hooked up the Link cable for some additional games, and they took every opportunity to remind me that my computer is old and out of date.... I could look up my current specs from this build 5+ years ago, but what does it matter.

(edit: AMD FX-6100 3.3Ghz w/ 16GB RAM
AMD Radeon 7700 w/ 1GB of GDDR5)

I plan to do a minor upgrade on this computer and give it to my daughter. Will likely just upgrade the video card and maxx out the RAM. (I edited in current specs above.... what would be a modest upgrade?)

but now I really want to build me a new computer. So here are the minimum specs recommended by the Oculus site. Let's use this as a starting point to help me build an upper class gaming computer.  :D

i'm going to assume the GPU's are listed weakest to best and sorted by family in the Nvidia case.

edit: and is there a good site to virtually put together a system so you can check compatibility and price as you swap out parts?

edit: I remembered that NewEGG had a PC builder. so I did minimal research as I went through the list and put together a system. Tell me what you think (p.s. It's double the budget of last time....)
https://newegg.io/c7a45eb

although for visual purposes, I was thinking of switching out the selected RAM in the list for 2x the below:

just so the RAM glows too.

Got some better prices than what they show now, built it this Fall and its kinda shocking how nice everything runs. I don't play most of the modern games but I was able to run Ark Survival Evolved on max settings and it ran silky smooth, so it should get the job done for most of the games I want to play. Star Wars Squadrons looks nice too.

It was about $1400 including tax and shipping for everything. It was a bit higher than I planned, but this was meant to future proof myself for a while. Only thing I'll potentially upgrade is the GPU and CPU down the line and additional SSD storage as the cost of that goes down, but won't need to worry about that for at least 5 years.

I started looking around on that site above, putting together a second build to see if I can do it cheaper or consider some other parts...

but while playing around trying to get Roblox on the Oculus 2, I realized that the old video card I have is not VR Ready so I need to upgrade it. I just dropped an AMD RX 580 in the amazon cart to upgrade my current PC, but I still want to build a new PC to blow this one out the water.

So is it better to go with Nvidia or AMD when it comes to new GPU's?
who's killing it right now, and what do you think of my build posted above?

So I looked up the motherboard on my current computer and I have a:
MSI 970a-G34: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/970A-G46#support-test

I believe I have a better CPU than the recommended minimum CPU for VR support (FX-4350) to go with the GPU upgrade I already bought. You think this will run the Oculus link well enough until I build my new computer?

Current specs:
AMD FX-6100 3.3Ghz w/ 16GB RAM
AMD Radeon 7700 w/ 1GB of GDDR5

Just bought a Radeon RX 580 to replace the 7700, and I think the CPU I have exceeds the minimum requirement, assuming higher numbers mean better processor. Do you think that will do?

or should I just scrap this system and build a new one for my daughter and a new one for me too?

I originally planned to upgrade my old PC piecemeal but ran into issues with compatibility which is why I ended up going with a completely new build. If I upgraded one thing it broke compatibility with others because of the overall age of my old system. So my vote would be to build new ones for both if you can afford it, as it should be cheaper in the long run and better ensure compatibility.

Plus it could be a fun father-daughter activity to build them together. A lot of it is fairly straightforward unless you want to attempt overclocking but that isn't really necessary for average play and enjoyment of a system.

The consensus up until last Fall was that AMD was cheaper but had some driver compatibility issues so overall people preferred Nvidia. The new GPUs and CPUs seem to have shifted that somewhat and leveled it out. You probably won't go wrong with either assuming you can fin them in stock (both are suffering supply issues due to Covid/logistics as well as the new launch attracting extra launch interest from users and scalpers). I went with Nvidia because I found an older TI edition for a great deal and I did not feel like risking driver compatibility hell though some say that issue is very much overplayed.

Well, I'm currently on the lookout for the RTX 3060ti if you happen know where to find one. Preferably the 3 fan Gigabyte or MSi versions with RGB.

I got a GPU to help the current computer along for a while, but may make a mid tier build/upgrade for my daughter

There were quite a few Ryzen 5 5800x popping up online yesterday.
I bought the Ryzen 7 3700x w/o an issue. But the 5's seem to be really popular.

I'm currently on the hunt for the last piece I need and that's a RTX 3060ti or a RTX 3070, but prices seem to be going up and availability in the US being almost non-existent.

Do we have any non US people here that can help a brotha out?
The 3060ti's I was looking at were around $440, and the 3070 was around $530
3 fan, and preferably ARGB. If you got a line on one, willing to pick it up and ship it to me, let me know, would really appreciate it :)

thanks.

So I got my Radeon 580 in the mail today to upgrade my existing PC. Went to hook it up, only to realize that I need a new PSU w/ 1 extra 8 pin connector.....

I currently have  the Corsair vx450w
https://www.cnet.com/products/corsair-vx450w-power-supply-450-watt-series/

1 x power 24 pin ATX with detachable 4 pin section
1 x power 8 pin EPS12V with detachable 4 pin ATX12V section
1 x 6 pin PCI Express power
6 x 15 pin Serial ATA power
8 x 4 pin internal power

So my question is, does this PSU look like a good replacement PSU?
https://www.newegg.com/corsair-rmx-series-rm550x-cp-9020177-na-550w/p/N82E16817139231?Item=N82E16817139231

1 x ATX 24-PIN (20+4)
1 x EPS/ATX12V 8-PIN (4+4)
2 x PCIe 8-PIN (6+2)
6 x SATA (3 SATA)
4 x PERIPHERAL (4-PIN)
1 x FLOPPY DRIVE ADAPTER (4-PIN)

Is there anything I'm missing here?

So I was FINALLY able to get my hands on a RTX 30 series GPU
I ended up upgrading to a RTX 3070, for a bit of a premium over what I originally expected to pay for a GPU, but I was tired of looking and my build is nearing the 30 day mark on returnability.
Time=Money / Money=Time... I got tired of wasting time to save some money, so I spent some money to save some time.

If you're in the Bay Area and looking for a store with regular stock, instead of having to rely on scalpers and dodgy online sparring matches against sniper bots, just let me know. I'll tell you were to check.

Now I gotta find the time to actually build this thing, now that I think I have all the pieces.

I spent the last 2 hours trying to figure this build out... cpu into motherboard. that's easy. check.
I started to do the PSU next, but wasn't sure how to route all the cables.... since the case has it underneath in a separate compartment accessible from the other side of the case....

So I tried to figure out the water cooler.... realized after I attached it to the case, that's the last thing I'm gonna put in, before I plug in the RAM and HDD's. But I did at least figure out how to set it up and how it needs to be set up, it will be a lot quicker the next time around.

so now I gotta take it back out, attach all the power cables, figure out the best way to get them all back to the PSU (detachable cables), then install the Water cooler again (which almost didn't fit... gonna be kinda tight, had to remove the rear fan and then put it back in afterwards)

But I think with a few more videos.... and a thorough reading of all the pamphlets, some trial and error, I think I got this (I hope.)

I feel like me 10 years ago would already have put this thing together. LOL
This whole thing looks extra complicated with all parts spread out.

Ok, so I feel like this:
Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML360R RGB 66.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

is overly complicated and the instructions in the box are absolutely terrible at explaining what the F#(k I'm supposed to do to make this thing work.
Theirs a a dozen cables, and I then there's apparently 3 different ways to hook it up, all of them just as confusing as the next.... I had to take a break after getting the majority of complicated stuff setup. But going back and forth from a video to the digital "manual" and the booklet it came with, was just too much for me tonight.

Makes me glad I didn't get a liquid cooler!

I attached the cpu, ram, and ssd to the mobo before adding it to the case.

I stuck the PSU in first so I could play out the cords and get a feel for where they go, then I stuck in the mobo and settled where the various psu cords went best.

Stuck the gpu in the wrong slot and nothing would appear on the monitor, but fixed that and it all thankfully worked.

I actually bought an M2 hard drive.
No idea how to install it.... Hopefully I can do it with everything else in place.

Other than that, just need to connect the PSU, RAM, and GPU
Then call over my old HDD from my old computer..

Quick question tho....
I can do a new install of windows 10 using the same key from my current computer, right?

Update: all things plugged in.

I just plugged in power to the pump thing and it is working. No idea how to control it without the remote, but I'll watch another video for that... I believe I have to plug it into the MB somewhere, but they don't make that clear as to where...

Anyway

Next step is to hook it up to a monitor and make sure it actually boots up, and that I can load windows and start using this new beast.

Edit:
Connected a monitor, verified the monitor worked....
No signal from computer.
Tried plugging in directly to the GPU and the onboard graphics as well. No luck.

My dilemma though, is that the only HDD I bought was the M.2 chip. Do I need an SSD?
I also don't have a "new" disc drive to install any software disc.
I guess I'll have to commandeer one from an older computer and try to install software till I'm up and completely digital?

M2 is a type of connection I believe. I thought all M2s were SSDs, but it should work fine so long as it is an M2 whether it is an SSD or HDD. My mobo has multiple M2 spots so you could run one of each it you wanted.

And so long as you having an already existing windows key that is not from a pre-install in the past should should be good there. You might have to "de-authorize" your old computer from that windows license though.

Sweet lights on your fans!

Yeah, I just ordered a new SSD as well.

But my main issue is actually on how to get he computer to boot to the BIOS so I can even recognize the M.2 as a drive
If I can get that to work, the rest becomes less of an issue.
Software I can deal with, non functional $2k worth of computer hardware that looks pretty when turned on, is not really what I was aiming for here. LOL

Update:
Hardware is working fine.... apparently always was.
After reading though trouble shooting forums, I found out that you have to connect through the Display Port until you install software in order to display on the screen. And you have to do it through the GPU because onboard will not work with the Ryzen 7 (or something like that....)

So I had to move upstairs to the carpeted part of the house, and test it using the monitor there, as that was easier than dragging a different monitor and cable all the way down stairs just to test the system out.

Now I have to figure out how to get Windows 10 on the computer. :)
hopefully a much simpler problem. Also bought the additional SSD for no reason. The M.2 was connected and working properly. I just couldn't tell because the display didn't come on.

Also the Liquid cooler wasn't as complicated as I thought now that I figured it out.
The video tutorial made it seem over complicated and the booklet it came with wasn't much more help. Now that I know what is needed, it really wasn't all that complicated after all.

So onto the next mission... Windows onto a USB Drive, and attempt to boot from there to install onto the M.2
So I actually have to pay for Windows now, huh...? :/  $100 for Pro version on a USB stick.
$140 to download it myself, and $199 straight through MS.

edit: Oh, and when I have the 2nd RAM Stick in, the computer won't display, so it was the RAM.
not sure if they both have to be in the DIMM2 slots or not.... I might just check to make sure it was in all the way, and then see if I can make it work on DIMM1 slots, otherwise, gotta make an exchange.
I
Final edit: all is good. All hardware working fine.
Windows installed, just need to get the key... Hopefully I can use my existing one from another computer.

Quickly on the ram, you need to make sure they are in the primary positions. They are typically the odd or even ports and have some sort of vague marking. If you have four ram slots and two sticks you aren't supposed to just fill the first two slots with ram. Gotta alternate them. Mobo may just ignore the sticks not conforming to that patter and be undetected.

I bought a new edition of Windows 10 Pro because I need the features. Paid $130 for a disk which was the cheapest listing from a pcpartpicker.com suggesting vendor (I'm not chancing any of those other vendors with cheaper offerings as many seemed to sketchy to be worth it) as I also bought a portable CD/DVD/BD player that plugs in via usb-c (and my mobo has integrated usb-c). I just plugged that in and booted from that and installed Windows directly.

I made a boot disc from my existing Win10 and put it in a MemStick. Worked fine, I just need a key.
Plan to purchase one, wanted advice on legitimacy of those cheaper sites offering then for $40-60. So thanks for answering that before I asked ðŸ˜

As for RAM. Yeah, they're alternating.
The DIMM1 slots were 1 & 3, DIMM2 were 2 & 4
I have them setup in 2 & 4, both working now.

What sucks, is if I had known I had to boot from the Display Port, and only on the GPU, I might've gotten this running last week. But I was trying to avoid assembly of any kind upstairs because it's all carpeted. Thanks to some trouble shooting forums, I was able to figure that out, and problem was quickly solved.

Now it's the way part of installing all the software.
I'll just borrow a disc drive from an older computer and hook it up  through a non mounted position (dangling from the open side) since there's no place for a disc drive in the case.

The lack of an optical media slot in the case was a problem for me when planning. Seems they are being phased out at this point, but I have a lot of media so didn't want to go without. Settling on an external drive fixed that problem and I just keep it in a drawer unless I need it.

that's a good backup plan. I'll probably do that, but I'm not spending any more on this build at this moment. (posting from new computer BTW :D)

other than still needing to see if I can transfer my Win10 license from my old computer, I'm just installing and setting stuff up.
Everything I need is online, so a disc drive isn't really gonna be needed since I also have DVD player hooked up to the TV if necessary, but I stream just about everything any way.

So my computer is up and running, I figured out how to access the M.2 drive finally.
couldn't have done it without a partner SSD I guess....
But, now I want to make the M.2 the boot drive and move the Windows install onto it.
Is that a wise decision?
I want my back up SSD for all my software and games
and then my old HDD to continue to be storage of all my old stuff.

I also need to figure out how to play with the lights through software, but that's a task for a different day.

Installing Windows on an SSD is a great performance improvement. I've never moved an install so no idea how easy or difficult it would be to complete.

I decided to not overcomplicate things and leave it alone.

Instead I need to figure out how to control the lighting through the motherboard by way of an app/program.

Did you hardware not come with it's own program? I'd check the manufacturer site and see if they have any tools linked there for you.

Turns out I hooked up the Cooler Master Water Cooler incorrectly.... I found another video on installation while trying to figure out how to control the lights....

I just need to connect an extra cable to make it all work.
(and that cable is in a very very hard place to reach w/o un-assembling a few items first :/)

here is the video that makes the installation SO SIMPLE, unlike the previous 3-4 vids and the absolutely useless instruction manual that it comes with.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZuTIS_sIWs

I really wish this was the first vid I had run across.... -_-

edit:
So i followed that video and plugged in the missing cables. I restarted the computer, and Dragon Center still isn't reading the GPU, RAM, nor the CoolerMaster.
The lights all work, but I can't do software control over anything but the built in MB lights. :?

There are a 2 more cables in the bag, but unless I know where their supposed to go... I'm not sure what to do with them. The instructions are literally useless for hooking up the controller portions of this device.

edit2: downloaded the software for the RAM and the GPU, ARGB working on those from the dedicated software.
Dragon software reads the RAM as present, but doesn't control it like it's supposed to.

The COOLER MASTER LIQUID ML360R RGB on the other hand.... software working about as good as the instructions in the manual. (read: as not at all)
I load the latest firmware #0008, says it detects the cooler, and then wants to force an upgrade to "latest firmware #0023". Once that completes, it says it no longer detects the cooler master :/

this has just become another tomorrow problem.

UPDATE:

I pretty much gave up on getting the Liquid Cooler ARGB lights to work with the software. Something I may revisit at some point....

New Project... upgrade old computer and setup in daughters room.
hows it going you ask? Well, the computer works fine. That's the good news.
the bad news is that I can't access the Windows key from my old harddrive still in that computer, and I didn't write it down becuase it said it would auto detect on new install in new computer. :facepalm;

initial issue was I installed the Win10Home instead of Win10Pro, so I just had to overwrite that install w/ a Win10Pro install. but it still didn't autodetect the other installation of Windows on the other HDD still in the computer.

Does anyone know a way to get that Win key?

p.s. I did replace the motherboard, so my next venture is to rebuild a 3rd computer (but i need to get the Windows key off that one before I do anything, first got to get the video output to start working again). So I was just thinking that I would rebuild the 3rd cmouter w/ the MB of the 2nd, so maybe I'll just steal the SSD from the 2nd computer and initially boot it with that and get the Win Key before putting it back in the 2nd computer, then use the Win Key and correct Win 10 version for the 3rd computer to redo that computer (does that all sound terribly complicated? please tell me there is an easier way)

Long story short, is rebuild of 2nd computer also exceeds specs for Oculus, but also turned into something far more expensive than what I set out to do originally.... Originally I meant to upgrade the MB and CPU. ended up also having to upgrade the RAM and bout 2 new m.2's for it.
Only thing not new in that "re"build was the case.

This 3rd rebuild will be easy though, because it will basically be the old 2nd computer, just in a different case.

It's hard to say what to do about getting the key since it depends on how you got Windows 10 in the first place. If all else fails, find one of the programs that gets around that for you. You have a legit copy, so it's not pirating.

My plan to upgrade to a new laptop probably won't be happening this year so I'm still rocking my mom's old Dell XPS l501x with it's first generation i5 processor. However, I managed to track down a FHD screen for it so I plan to upgrade from it's current 1368 x 736 resolution.

The CPU on it is a socket style CPU so I should be able to upgrade that as well but when we're talking about 10+ year old processor technology I'm not convinced the jump from a first generation i5 to an i7 would be worth it, especially since the i7 requires me to invest in a higher watt charger and the quad core i7 has a slower clockspeed than what I currently have.

The thing is an absolute champ though. It's a big bulky thing that has a fairly powerful cooling system and that combined with the SSD upgrade I did last year has bought it alot of life. Combined with how easy it is to repair for a laptop I suspect I'll be keeping it around for something even after I upgrade unless it completely dies out somehow.
