Nintendo Gaming / Bayonetta 3 - gameplay impressions
« on: October 27, 2022, 09:54:18 PM »

Have been playing the game for few hours now.

I only have 2 demon and 2 weapons so far and lots of stuff still to unlock and learn, but it still feels like Bayonetta.

New homunculi enemies feel weird at first -- have to get accustomed to new timings and attack cues, so small archers managed to hit me more often than big guys because how subtle their tells are.

Lock-on moved to R3 (MGR style) changes surprisingle little. Commands for tetsuzanko and Stiletto are still the same. R1 bumper does the same thing -- it was just decoupled from manual lock-on and renamed "Stance change".

Demon slaves feel way too slow, but at least you can summon them for one move, buffer one move and turn yourself back to normal, so both you and demon attack at the same time.

Some Bayonetta players noticed that time requirements on verses are very short, which means you might very well be required to use demons for high DPS or else you're not gonna make it on time for Pure Platinum. That's disappointing but maybe there will be more hard hitting options further in the campaign.

Nintendo Gaming / My Nintendo memories for 3DS and Wii U
« on: February 16, 2022, 05:02:20 AM »
For a limited time Nintendo launched a site to look on your gaming stats on 3DS and WiiU:

https://my-nintendo-3ds-wiiu-memories.nintendo.com/en-US/index.html#top

My stats

3DS:
Total Play Time -- 693hrs
Total Titles Played -- 128

Most Played:
Kid Icarus: Uprising -- 96hrs
StreetPass Mii Plaza -- 53hrs
Luigi's Mansion 2 -- 31hrs

Wii U:

Total Play Time -- 4822hrs

Total Titles Played -- 80

Most Played:
YouTube (lol) -- 3301hrs
The Wonderful 101 -- 261hrs
BAYONETTA -- 197hrs

That's actually very low time spent on these systems, Youtube excluding. Still great times were had.

Nintendo Gaming / Rhythm Doctor is coming to Switch!
« on: January 23, 2018, 03:19:02 PM »

A one-button rhythm game inspired by Rhythm Heaven 7 years in the making is nearing completion and today they announced it's coming to Switch!

Ever since i tried the original Flash demo, i knew this game is special. Throughout the years they kept showing their progress through closed beta versions for mailing list subscribers and some of the levels in there were extremely well done. Think Elite Beat Agents level of stories.

Check out this footage of me failing in July 2016 beta level if you want some "that EBA Christmas level" tier of stuff:

https://my.mixtape.moe/njwivp.webm

Actual gameplay consists of only pressing one button in rhythm. The only rule is that you need to press the button on the 7th beat. That's it.

Of course, anyone who knows Rhythm Heaven knows it's not that easy as it sounds. Rhythm Doctor is just as strict with it's timing and will use more than one track, each with different and irregular times. Polyrhythm ability is very much required:

And again -- just like in RH -- visuals will often be used as distraction rather than an aid, forcing player to rely more on rhythm itself.

Last year they did a major breakthrough creating a custom level editor and there are now 400+ custom levels and counting.

Including a rendition of Splatoon music:

Or a custom level based on Mudeth's music for The Binding of Isaac: Antibirth:

Track from LISA: The Joyful:

One of the most impressive track i've seen in terms of how complex it is rhythmically:

If you want to check it out right now, play old Flash demo (needs Flash) or download latest level editor.

Nintendo Gaming / Pic a Pix demo on Switch -- 12 free Picross puzzles!
« on: December 24, 2017, 12:10:39 AM »
It's basically Picross. It adds colours but it isn't a big difference compared to regular Picross and all the same solving practices apply.

Spent like hour and a half just solving the first row.

Nintendo Gaming / 1-2-Switch = Nintendo's EPD = SPD + EAD
« on: February 18, 2017, 03:21:24 AM »
After watching Giant Bomb preview video about the game i realized that "1-2 Switch" game encapsulates the merge of Nintendo SPD (WarioWare, Rhythm Heaven, Tomodachi) and Nintendo EAD groups.

Also -- you've been lied to.

Main mode of 1-2 Switch is not minigames. The main mode is Team Battle which a board party game like Mario Party.

Structure of the each mini-game is like this: you pick a game, they you are shown a video that explains how to play and then you play it. Well that's pretty much copied from SPD's Rhythm Heaven.

But the bigger structure is that of a party game with two teams taking turns moving their pieces on a board, a-la Mario Party or Wii Party.

Actual mini-games are also reminiscent of SPD's signature manic crazyness. I want to present "Gorilla" minigame which would fit right in a Rhythm Heaven game. Runway minigame looks like taken straight from Wario Ware Smooth Moves with added competitive element.

Nintendo SPD was pretty much my favourite Nintendo studio and i love that their signature humour and style is very much present in new merged EPD team through games like 1-2 Switch.

Korra already had a thread.

Transformers came out this year and was pretty cool:

TMNT is next year and we have an art:

XBLA art is taken from one of the covers in contemporary IDW comic series by Mateus Santolouco:

http://wiiubrew.org/wiki/UsendMii

Spent a few hours toying with this thing.

Implementation is actually pretty ingenious -- program acts as a local web-server and hosts webpage that intercepts all buttons presses and stick movements (and some limited touch functionality) into key presses on PC.

Key presses should be quite enough for some emulators but with more modern games you're gonna need actual controller functionality.

If you combine it with vJoy you can emulate an actual controller. That requires quite a lot of time to set it up.

I made DMC4SE work after some tuning, but not Super Meat Boy because it requires for xbox 360 compatible controller which vJoy is not.

So i set up x360ce (which is probably a bigger hassle than other tools combined) and it kinda worked even if that was quite ridiculous: my button presses and analog movements went through USendMii to vJoy then to x360ce then to the actual game.

Eventually i made it work for Super Meat Boy, but at this point it would have been easier to just emulate keyboard button presses.

Since you're not actually connecting Gamepad to your PC -- it's a workaround using web-browser so actual console needs to be on as well.

And it's quite limited too because some buttons in your web-browser actually do some stuff, like B goes back to previous page and Y does something too. Author uses rubber band to keep ZL and ZR pressed at all times to put browser into scrolling mode where none of the buttons work and that stupid workaround works well, but it's so stupid and obviously makes triggers unusable.

And finally there is some lag too. It's in tenth of seconds but it was noticeable in SMB.

Playing Devil May Cry 4 and Super Meat Boy with a gamepad was quite an experience though.

Dr. Sparkle's monumental Chrontendo series seemed like an insanity -- reviewing the entirety of NES library? And later on he starts Chronsega and Chronturbo which does the same for Master System and PC Engine!..

Insanity or not, this series is hours upon hours of videogame related edutainment providing an wide look into history of console often with intermissions that delve into individual creators and events happening at the time to provide context. It gives a comrehensive outlook of complete console libraries with all their masterpieces and shovelware (prepare for some mahjong, golf and baseball games).

This format was later picked up by other people and now we also have:

  • Generation 16 -- chronological series for Sega 16 bit. It's somewhat redundant with Chronsega reviewing the same games just in a different order, but still interesting.

  • Gameboy World -- chronological series for Gameboy releases -- which is an even bigger and crazier enterprise considering amounts of shovelware and how long original gameboy kept getting releases.

  • Playstation Year One. Not sure if this new series is gonna cover just first year of PS releases, but it still entertaining.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo and DeNA Form Business and Capital Alliance
« on: March 17, 2015, 03:54:47 AM »
http://dena.com/intl/press/2015/03/nintendo-and-dena-form-business-and-capital-alliance.html

Leveraging the strength of Nintendo's intellectual property (IP) and game development skills in combination with DeNA's world-class expertise in mobile games, both companies will develop and operate new game apps based on Nintendo's IP, including its iconic game characters, for smart devices. The alliance is intended to complement Nintendo's dedicated video game systems business and extend Nintendo's reach into the vast market of smart device users worldwide. Under the alliance, DeNA will also be able to strengthen its gaming business at a global scale by leveraging Nintendo's IP. To ensure the quality of game experience that consumers expect from this alliance of Nintendo and DeNA, only new original games optimized for smart device functionality will be created, rather than porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or the Nintendo 3DS portable system.
This basically means that they're gonna let DeNa do games with Nintendo characters as advertisements of sorts for actual Nintendo games.

Quote
Nintendo and DeNA also plan to develop an online membership service that is accessible from smart devices, PC and Nintendo systems, such as the Nintendo 3DS portable system and the Wii U home console. The membership service, which is targeted to launch in the fall of 2015, will be built on DeNA's extensive experience and capabilities in online membership services.
Now that's the most interesting part -- could this be an unified account system? But if it's gonna be run by DeNa how are supposed to carry it through generations not drop it like they did with GameSpy's network?

100 games in total, 30 new ones, the rest is from previous installments. Getting mini-games from GBA installment worth buying the game alone for me.

Also -- customizable cover plates!

Also -- skins (for all models):

Also -- along with Xenoblade, NES Remix is also getting ported to 3DS.

One of the developers also has amazing blog with well done analysis of brawler/beat-em-up genre, spanning from Battletoads to Bayonetta. I highly recommend reading a few of his articles on the subject.

On the more academic side he wrote:
I also recommend reading his combat analysis articles where he picks apart combat systems of the most recent beat-em-up games, such as MGR, DMC, Ryse and others.

Nintendo Gaming / Super Mario 3D World survey
« on: December 03, 2013, 01:35:25 AM »
I just got it and filled it out. Lots of questions and a really interesting ones i feel.

Filling it out i felt like i am choosing the future of Mario series or something... I only made screens for half of them and skipped usual "tell us your age" and "rank your enjoyment from 1 to 10 things" pages.

Funny how they skipped gaming PC in the platforms list...

Sad how W101 is not even a regular option and i had to write it under "Other"...

With these two questions, Nintendo is gauging how much of an impact Mario 3d World did...

Here comes the big stuff: Nintendo is trying to makes us choose between 2d and 3d Marios here:

This question rank the impact of 180 that most forum posters had after October trailer:

What is the best way to devlier the news, Nintendo asks:

I am feeling like if you will pick "good review ranks" here, Nintendo will start to bribe these journo-whores more:

Interesting, especially the question that makes you pick between 2d and 3d Mario...

Rolling jumps! (crouch, then press B+A simultaneously)

Too bad levels somewhat obstructs using this ability to breeze through them as fast as you can, like in 3D Land.

Cat running animation in level select!

Cat Mario runs completely different in level select from regular gameplay. He's walking like a very proud and smug cat with tail up vertically in the air. It's so funny and becomes funnier when you run because animation just speeds up to 2x.

Music remixes:

Sound effects and sound design:

So many little things: birds chirping and flutter of wings when they fly away, cat goombas meowing, muted music when you sink into water.

Fire Flower Peach:

Got damn.

What are yours?

24
Look at these covers (text specifically):

Do you see it?

"Mario" word. First, letters go as green (M), blue (A), yellow (R), red (I) and green (O) in SMW and YI.

Starting from Mario 64, they start going blue, green, yellow, red, green. It's Mario 64 and two Galaxy games (Sunshine skipped it entirely and had all of it's title written in ocean blue).

Starting from Land colours start changing again. Now it's red, green, yellow, blue and green again.

And finally we arrive at 3D World which ditches second green in "O" for pink.

It's kinda interesting that letters kinda match playable characters: red M for Mario, green A for Luigi, yellow R is for cat Mario (?), blue I is for Toad and pink O is for Peach.

I am doubtful about yellow I, but pink O is obviously there because of Peach. Pink was never there previously so it's not just a random colour rehashing on their part.

Probably doesn't mean much, just a random observation. For all we know they could just decided on letter colouring on cover to cover basis and designer just picked the ones that are the most pleasing and colour balanced with rest of the picture.

General Gaming / What games you thought about but ultimately didn't get?
« on: November 15, 2013, 12:10:16 AM »
3DS:
Fire Emblem -- i'd rather finish Shadow Dragon and try out earlier games sometime later rather than start yet another RPG timesink
Animal Crossing -- ain't nobody got time for that!
Pokemon -- never played series before
Mario and Donkey Kong -- it's not Donkey Kong 94
Sticker Star -- disappointing battle system
Castlevania 3DS -- developer saying that this game will be available later on PC

Wii U:
Zombi U -- it's console FPS
Game & Wario -- it's not WarioWare (that "Gamer" mode is tempting though)
Nintendo Land -- can't justify buying largely multiplayer game that i would get to play only two-three times (Wii Party U is totally okay for that though)
Scribblenauts Unlimited -- can't buy something that is still not available in PAL zone, ultimately got it for cheap on Steam

360:
DMC HD collection -- it was on sale for 15 bucks. Not sure why i passed on this exactly. Still kinda want to get it eventually.
