Nintendo Gaming / RE:DS's Wireless = Free games? Wha!?
« on: October 27, 2004, 07:57:48 AM »
I don't know how animal crossing would work.

I really don't see the interest in playing cartridgeless wireless.

Though the only thing I could see it either

1)The cartless wireless features are only for multiplayer minigames.  Perhaps the hidden NES games have multiplayer.
2)Perhaps it just allows your friends to wonder with you in your own town, and perhaps the game has in game multiplayer minigames.  This would atleast allow you to show your town to people without the game in a unique way.  The game would only have to send information about your game, and whatever ingame features would be available in this mode.
3)It could send the entire game, except the save feature, and therefore prevent the theft of the game.

Once again though, it depends on what the developers want to send to you, but I really don't see the problem since once you turn off the system you lose whatever memory is in the RAM.

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo DS Japanese Shipment Numbers
« on: October 27, 2004, 07:33:10 AM »
As long as Nintendo is keeping its promise of weekly new shipments I actually don't think that number is that bad.

300,000 will handle the presales and alittle more.  In the next weeks if Nintendo keeps a steady stream of 150,000 or more I think Nintendo will have enough for the holiday season.

Hopefully, Nintendo will be providing larger numbers for the American release, because we are going to need them.

But, because of these numbers I am going today and preordering my DS, before the hype gets going with the system.

Ian Sane, you have been harping on this DS rushed for awhile.  Yeah, it was rushed EVERY LAUNCH for a system has been rushed.  Sometimes it is more important to get your product on the market sooner than later.  Nintendo's Christmas launch is going to be very important in creating a user base to combat the PSP.  And Nintendo will have the DS games in the following months to keep gamers happy.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:DS's Wireless = Free games? Wha!?
« on: October 27, 2004, 05:19:35 AM »
Simple.

The DS RAM you are downloading the game is only so large.  So you could pretty much only download one multiplayer only game at a time.  You won't be getting the entire game, and you will be limited, because once you turn off the game it is over.

Besides that I am sure that you are going to need at least one system with the full game to be constantly sending new information over the WIFI, like the map of the next level you are going to playing at and stuff.

So really this isn't going to be a problem or likely.

Could you someone figure out to do this, yeah, but if it is a section of the game Nintendo is allowing to be copied via wireless connection, then I am willing to bet they would like you to do that and play their game (and potentially buy the full version) then not play the game at all.

This is not a problem.  Nintendo has probably looked at this threat entirely.

However, it does atleast allow the homebrew people to design games for the DS, and potentially find away to actually get their code to the DS, to share with gamers around the world, and that is cool.

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo DS Commercials Available for Viewing
« on: October 27, 2004, 05:10:46 AM »
I really like the first and third one.  Moody, alittle creepy, and highly sexual.  It made me interested in what the system has to offer.

I am trying to figure out which one is more suggestive the first or third one.

You Might Like.

or

Someone, Somewhere wants to play with you.

This ad campaign is going to really help Nintendo with that kiddie image.

I am guessing the 2nd commercial will be the one they air at times children might be watching, because it is not sexual at all, and is kinda stupid.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Why not a Sin and Punishment port of the US DS?
« on: October 26, 2004, 08:20:30 AM »
I like treasure.  I like that their games are more art than just products, but in the end sometimes that means some games aren't going to be as marketable as others.  I think Treasure has had a problem with originality and marketability.  Games like Stretch Panic are not going to appeal to everyone, and in the end, Treasure should be respected for the risks.

« on: October 26, 2004, 08:18:07 AM »
I was never able to play Cubivore, so I really don't know what kind of game experience it would be.

I would say that an evolution game is a cool concept, but it would be very hard for me to support the game unless it does something very innovative besides just the simple graphics.

By the way, the best evolution game I have ever played was EVO, a very fun game indeed.

I look at this game a not just a port, but a viable game and style of game for a unique DS experience.  First onrail shooters really some really creative game design when you can easily just touch and shoot to aim.  It quickly becomes a game of reflexes and strategies.  Second, the extra screen could be used to display (yes a map, but instead of singularly being on rails now you can move and dodge with your character, Rotate the screen for attacks from all sides, and offer much more immersive multipathing where the direction you are pointing right before a branching path can determine your next rail experience.

I am looking at the idea of a Remake not a Port.  I want the shooter experience of a railshooter, with the more depth from having multple layers, and the dodging element.

I also want a new kind of deathmatch experience which I think this game could easily provide.

This game would actually work really well on the DS, but I wouldn't want a direct port.  I would love a redux of the game.

Same story, but redo the levels to fit the DS' strengths.  I remember seeing the art design and the game design of this game and hoped that Nintendo would release it States side.  Still don't know why they didn't.  Nintendo could design a very very cool game with a similar designed game.

I am thinking a map on the bottom and the action on top.  You use the thumb strap or stylus to target and attack.  Using the double tap idea to fire.  Now, left right forward back allows you to move around the screen as the character, and left and right allows you to rotate around the enviroment and fight.  (Kinda like Panzer Dragoon)  I would buy that game.  Last work in a 8 player verse mode, and a 4 player CO-OP mode and you have yourself a stellar game.

I hope this is created, but knowing Nintendo it won't be.

KDR:  Thanks for your response.  Its good to see honesty.  And I like how this board doesn't bash anyone with more negative responses towards Nintendo than not.  (The IGNboards used to be brutal to people that would speak poorly of whatever system.)

It looks like Nintendo hit gold packing that Metroid Demo into the DS units.  I think that alone seems to be getting people excited about the DS.

I see multiplayer Cafeteria deathmatches and dorm room battles becoming a norm with this system.

Rohq:  I think he was referring to how great the game was after Rare was able to get used to the Extra RAM and programming for the Nintendo 64.

The Nintendo DS maybe having developer problems figuring out creative useful ideas for the 2 screens, but once they get comfortable with the system and how to maxiumize the code then games and functionality of all DS components will become more advanced and completely realized.

Funny.

No I am not a spy.

I have just created many threads that get zero responses.  So I was try to add questions to try and start up discussions and find opinions instead of just telling mine.  Then I also try to respond as much a can and give positive feedback so people feel that their response wasn't ignored and that it was actually appreciated.

I guess I try to be too much the nice guy.

You know I hate sports games, but Madden really does tempt me because I think that new navigational menu and play calling is just awesome.

It looks like overall people may not be completely satisfied with the launch, but believe it is atleast "good enough."  And people seem cemented on the already anounced games coming very soon to the system.  Metroid Hunters, Animal Crossing DS, Mario Kart DS.  I know I am excited about those games.

Question:  Will you or are you disappointed when games don't every feature the DS has in its games?  Will you be upset if the touchscreen isn't used within every game?  Or the Microphone?  or Wireless connectivity?  or even dual screen play?

I for one wouldn't be too upset if the game is good.  Nintendo made a system that would have more options for functionality, but that doesn't mean the system demands it.  That is what makes this system special.  You have everything you need to create any type of game and make it very functional.

So the concept of an all in one portable system, that plays games, music, movies, and such within the PSP won't sell?

Interesting results.  It seems Nintendo's DS is a system that has people interested, but the launch may not be enough to cement early adopters, and if Nintendo waits too long the allure of the Sony PSP could hurt sales.

I guess that is question number 5.

5)Are you interested in the Sony PSP, why or why not?

I am not interested.  Manyly because I have a limited budget and I would rather get something truly innovative and different then games I could play at home on the go.

My answers:

1)If my budget allows I will buy the system at launch.  I really want it, but I have to do some financial juggling, but I will get the system this year.  Either at launch or for Christmas.

2)Since I am doing financial juggling, If I buy the system I will get only 1 or 2 games. Those games are going to be Super Mario 64 DS, and hmmm this is second game is still up for grabs after I read the reviews of the games.

3)Financial reasons would be the only reason I would wait.

4)Super Mario 64 DS completely sold me on the system.  Sure people are complaining its just an advanced port...but it is a portable version of my favorite game created, and I don't have my N64 anymore, so I can finally play it again.

I got a few questions for this group, to see where everyone is at.

1)Now that we know the launch titles are you going to buy the system at launch, or later this year, or next year after more games are available?

2)If you are buying at launch, how many and what games are you hoping to buy?

3)If you are waiting, why are you waiting?

4)Last, Is there a game that could have been available at launch or is a game that is available that persuaded you to buy the system?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:metroid hunters story mode ?
« on: October 20, 2004, 06:08:54 AM »
You know.  It really depends on what the 3rd person game is trying to do.

Mario 64 and the many platform games work when:

A)It has a descent Camera and forgiving controls and game design.  Mario 64 was the best and possible still the best 3rd person game.  It have very forgiving controls and level design.  The only problem with controls was the very hard to pull of wall jump.  However Mario Sunshine gave it a more forgiving "slide" controls and it made the game that much more playable.

B)Make the controls simple, not complex.  The spy stealth games are becoming annoyingly hard to play because they have just too much for you to do and take in.  To play the game you must control the character, the camera, and now what each of the 6 or more buttons do to help you throughout the game.  There is just too much to juggle, and when you add in having to be stealthy, and advanced AI that are able to kill you in a few hits it becomes frustrating.  Simple controls work best.  Metal Gear Solid has huge depth, but still overall his moves are rather limited, and since you don't have to control the camera it makes it much easier.  Last, they gave you a very functional map.  The game design simplied the complex tasks it asked you to do.

C)Smart AI, but not Genius AI.  Every company is now pushing greater and smarter AI.  They seem to think the better and more responsive the AI we design the better game we can create.  This isn't completely true.  You want to design fun AI, not just smart and challenging AI.  I don't want AI to feel mechanical and stupid, but I don't want them so smart that when facing 3 or more of them I can't survive at all.  Again Metal Gear Solid is a good example of good balance.  The AI is smart, but you can bet them and they do fairly stupid things still.

Basically, you have to be extra careful when designing 3rd person games.  Game Design, controls, Camera, and level design takes on much greater importance to creating a functional fun game.

For the most part 1st person games, and 2D games don't have this problem as much.

TalkBack / RE:In-Game Advertising Shows High Growth Potential
« on: October 19, 2004, 04:32:56 AM »
The way I see it.  Advertising in games really depends on the experience you are having in the game.  Some games it adds to realism within the gaming enviroment.

For instance:

Football or any sports games:
There are timeless companies that are always going to advertise on billboards around the stadium.  Those companies should be represented.  Why not approach the company for ad support within the game, or atleast permission to use their logos.

Racing Games:
Billboards are everywhere.  Once again, if you are racing down a street in America you will come across billboards.  The trick is to once again get timeless companies that always advertise on billboards.

Grand Theft Auto:  You know in these games that take place in real cities or cities designed close to others, then billboards also make some sense when used modestly, and can help design mental place markers in the enviroment.

In the end, within certain games it works and makes sense.  In other games, it is the worst sort of corporate invasion.  However, I don't think we are going to be seeing ads pop in the truly artistic creations like Mario,Halo,Zelda,ICO, or others.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:metroid hunters story mode ?
« on: October 18, 2004, 11:55:05 AM »
How about this for a Metroid FPS Adventure.

Each level is a different bounty.  You must explore the world.  Find clues to whom you are hunting and how to find him.  In the process you are fighting gangsters, and stopping other crime in the city.

The world and societies would be fantasy cyberpunk, with intelligent creatures/monsters (similar to space pirate designs) within the games.

Each level or case would be on a new planet, and a few later ones may revist locations.  As you explore to get ungrades you must enhance your suit.  When money at a arena battle pit will help you enhance your suit allowing you more access to the worlds and to finally solve the case.

Boss battles will be huge arena battles against these bounties.  I would love this game so much and would round Samus out so much.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nintendo DS Thumbstrap (What's going on?)
« on: October 14, 2004, 07:01:54 AM »
I was really worried about the idea of the thumbstrap.  First I didn't want something else to lose that I need to play games, and second I thought that Nintendo would make something that wouldn't fit for everyone, or really wouldn't work properly.

After seeing what Nintendo has for the thumb strap my worries are over.  Nintendo definately knew what it was doing designing the thing.

1)It wraps around the wrist first so it should fit everyone.
2)It appears it will attach to the actual DS system like many Camera straps do.  This is smart and important because it becomes a part of the system, not an extra you must carry around with you.
3)If Sponge is correct it will be packed in with the DS.  And if not then definately with Super Mario 64 DS this will mean everyone will have a thumbstrap and 3rd party developers can feel safe designing games that require it.

Nintendo really does appear to have an amazing system with the DS.  I really don't care if every feature is used with every game.  The point is designers can use them, if they need to.  Madden DS is a perfect example of this.  Madden isn't using the second screen to control players or anything.  But they understand it helps them to rapidly pick plays easier.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:DS downloads
« on: October 13, 2004, 12:28:10 PM »
I think he meant can you download demos or something from online, or from a station at the store.

This won't happen until the unit has proven itself as a success.  Then Nintendo will be more likely to create these download demo spots.

But don't look for it until Nintendo believes they have a marketshare that validates spending money on the system.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:mario kart DS thread. Chain Chomp is awesome.
« on: October 13, 2004, 09:52:43 AM »
Ian Sane:  I didn't think Mario Kart: DD had that bad of track design.  The later tracks were amazingly varied and stuff we had never seen or really dreamed before.

The earlier courses were more traditional Mario Kart, but all of them had something that made them stick out.

My favorite course was the Baby Mario/Luigi course.  It was simple but it was really crazy fun.

The biggest disappointment with Mario Kart DD was the lack of battle arenas, and Battle Modes.

I hope this is corrected in the DS Mario Kart.  I hope that I have a vast selection of Battle Arenas that offer different and varied strategies to win.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:mario kart DS thread. Chain Chomp is awesome.
« on: October 13, 2004, 09:25:06 AM »
I really don't need to paint my Kart.  I would rather have the really neat different designed Karts than the ability to paint and put logos on the Karts.  In the game it would be hardly noticeable during the race.

A touch screen track editor with you being able to pick a backdrop would be cool.  Even if it is as basic as draw a track loop and then the programming fills in the details.

The idea of targeting certain characters with weapons is awesome, but I can see a balancing problem.  I would like to bring back alot of the weapons from the N64 game.  I loved the massive Bananna peel lines you could make.  I thought that was one of the best weapons in the game.
