Shows how much trust Nintendo has with Treehouse's localization. They are an often overlooked hero of many of Nintendo's titles here in the states. Games like the Mario and Luigi series, Paper Mario etc wouldn't be nearly as charming from a dialogue/writing standpoint if it wasn't for them.  Glad they were given such free reign with Kid Icarus, while I haven't played it, I heard it is wonderfully written.

Also if this advice was so obvious, why in the heck didn't Sony plan better in the first place when it came to good games?

As far as quality is concerned, I think Sony's made sure there's plenty of it in the Vita's software library.  The problem is quantity.  Sony has not ensured that there's a steady flow of new titles.

I just don't understand how Sony keeps making the same mistakes, even with Kaz Hirai as the new president.

True, from what I've read about the Vita launch lineup, it was far superior to 3DS's.  Still I'm not sure why these companies (and I include Nintendo) aren't planning better because a slow supply of good to great games is the best way to slow down, if not completely kill the momentum of a system.

I still love how polite Miyamoto and Iwata usually are when it comes to the competition vs what Sony usually says when it criticizes Nintendo. Also if this advice was so obvious, why in the heck didn't Sony plan better in the first place when it came to good games?

You can argue that Nintendo HAD to create new IP early on but really what you're saying is that now they're resting on the laurels and that's okay.

No what is being said is that this is hardly a new phenomena with Wii, and has dated back to the N64 days. I don't think anyone has said they aren't interested in new IPs and characters.

I really hope Xseed is doing ok business wise, they really have brought a lot of great stuff to the Wii that would have otherwise been ignored. I'll do my best to get this limited edition!

I had a lot of fun with DKCR. The controls would have been better without the waggle roll but they worked pretty well. I beat every level of the game without the Homebrew patch. The areas I had trouble with had nothing to do with the controls. Rather, jumping on the tires and and timing jumps made me want to haymaker a basket of kittens. In that instance, it's not the control's fault that I suck at videogames.

Anyway, I think Star Fox is better suited as a downloadable title. Keep Fox in the Arwing. Taking Fox out and into grind missions makes it an entirely different game. Retro Studios or whatever company handling Star Fox could easily just make an entirely new IP and really go nuts with it, instead of making half a Star Fox game. I mean, I get it in terms of marketing but in terms of artistic integrity, I really don't get it. It's a shame that Nintendo doesn't have enough faith in themselves (anymore?) to establish new IPs based on just great ideas. To me, I don't get it because what made Nintendo into the company they are today was their ability to create classic characters. Don't stop making Mario and Star Fox but not every great idea had to be retro-fitted to be part of those franchises.

Couldn't it be argued that they created new characters out of necessity, since the SNES there really hasn't been many classic characters created. There have been plenty of new franchises, but recognizable characters? Not so much. I mean look at Smash Bros., besides the Pikmin theme, virtually all the franchise characters are from the NES/SNES/GB days and older.

I'm going to continue believing in an asteroid being responsible for the death of dinosaurs or a major volcanic eruption, it sounds much better then farting oneself into extinction.

It's $60 a year (unless you find a card on sale), which averages out to $5 a month.

I am referring to paying month by month, and they charge $9.99. I am not really understanding how they justify the $14.99 a month, when the month by month payment plan is still $5 less.

TalkBack / Re: Xenoblade's Graphics: Why HD Does Not Matter
« on: May 08, 2012, 04:00:46 AM »
Oh boy! Now this didn't happen when we all were in the 16-bit era. Actually it did, and 10 years from now it will seem just as absurd. The truth is that art and creativity will always win over "modern graphics".

It has to be said, though, that as important as art design is in a game, once you as a gamer go HD on an HD TV there's really no going back to seeing games the way you used to.  You can't "un-see" the radical visual difference between SD and HD, especially in gaming.  I think that may be what the author of the article in question ran into: after years of playing HD games, suddenly they're playing the SD Xenoblade and all the graphical flaws just leaped out at them.  It's jarring, and at least in my case it takes a long time to get used to playing SD games again.

Have to say I agree, though I did go back and play Wind Waker and it was not jarring in the least, in fact it still looks visually and artistically gorgeous.

Seems to be a bit of a rip off to me considering you can find 12 months of Xbox Live Gold for around $30-40 from various etailers. I could have swore you only paid $10 monthly for a month's worth of Gold anyway (unless this is for another territory).

Doesn't the 3D Classic Kid Icarus have a difficulty setting?

On another note, everything I've heard about Kid Icarus is that it is pretty poorly balanced in that the first few levels are the extremely difficult ones and from there it actually gets easier.

I wonder how much internal Flash storage they'll throw on there. The Wii had 512 MB, the 3DS had 2 GB, so I'd like to think that sets a baseline. The XBox 360 has that 4 GB model out there, and I'd like to think that Nintendo could best that... is that too much to hope? I mean, won't Dragon Quest X require an included custom 16 GB flash memory usb drive to run on the Wii?

I'd think (and hope) that they at least have 16GB of storage if they went with flash memory if they decide to go the non-hard drive route with the out of box model. That seems to be the appropriate amount of memory to allow a gamer to download a couple of retail releases, something they seem to being pushing.

Launch time is a great chance for Retro to make and present a world or universe of their own creation. If this rumor comes true, then it's a shame that they lose that chance.

As much as that saddens me, I'm equally excited to see what Retro can do with Star Fox. I assume the team are at least somewhat familiar with the space combat games of old such as Tie Fighter, Privateer, Wing Commander, Freespace 2, and so on. They could use such knowledge to push Star Fox in to bold, new frontiers. If not, they could at least bring a little space sim influence to the Star Fox 3D shoot'em up.

Agree with everything you said, I want to be clear I am always excited for whatever their next project is, if it is Star Fox, or something else, they will likely do great, unique,  things with it. It is solely because of their talent that I do hope they get to put their own unique stamp on the industry with a series that people link directly to them.

I do believe Retro is one of the best studios going right now, I just want to see them create their own game and IP. A studio that talented should be crafting something that is distinctly their own IP, something like Bungie did with Halo.

While I would love to see what they could do with Star Fox, I'd much rather they work on a brand new IP. Oh well, whatever they are developing it will undoubtedly be great.

Still waiting for season 2 to show up on Netflix. Also my favorite secondary character is Gummy the Toothless Alligator, he needs more episodes to star in!

69
And are we even 'split'? It seems a few loud people make up the negative portion of the Wii argument.

Yes, as with many things a vocal minority does not always indicate a massive dislike for something. Message boards should never be used alone as a measuring stick for how positive or negative something is received.

Their business model caters to those consumers the most, not casual gamers.

Is that the reason why Reggie took years to finally bring over Xenoblade Chronicles and Pikmin 2 NPC?

To be fair, it took Europe awhile to localize Xenoblade as well (over a year), which isn't horribly different from the time it takes most RPG's to be localized. So at most it took Reggie "months" to bring it over after Europe got it in August. Pikmin 2 on the other hand is ridiculous.

I still agree Nintendo does know who their userbase is for the most part, even if they bungle it every once in awhile (with North America seemingly taking up the mantle of the bungler).

Selling 5000 copies only generates revenue, not necessarily profit. That figure is probably much higher.

Yeah, you are right (was tired when I wrote that), I meant the 5000 or so mark is when they actually start seeing any kind of revenue on it. We have no idea what the budget is, but they'd probably have to sell several thousand additional units after the 5k mark to make a profit.

72
Yeah, you really cannot blame them, especially after hearing one must sell over 5000 units just to start seeing any revenue. The way Wii has been slowly dying, I have no doubt Wiiware sales have slowed drastically as well. It is sad, but is likely a wise choice.

Agreed, while it has been so long ago that I played Skies of Arcadia, I remember it being a fantastic game, that sadly has been neglected by Sega. It bothers me when I see characters from games that should have never been forgotten in the first place just thrown into whatever they feel like. Mega Man, sadly, appears to be going that direction.

TalkBack / Re: NWR Game Club #2: Metroid: Other M
« on: April 30, 2012, 06:15:42 PM »
Besides video game stories are not really known for being amazing works of art, and compared to many games out there, the story was A+++ material (which I admit is pretty sad, but that says more about the lack of storytelling skills in the industry then anything)!

Maybe the actual story itself in Other M is fine. Who knows. I can't tell because the actual storyTELLING is unbearable. The laziest, least cinematic way to tell stories in any visual medium is through straightforward narration. Another terrible storytelling technique is overt, on the nose dialog. Main characters should also not be confined to a narrow emotional range for very long. Other M has ALL of these things.

Does the game deserve a pass because this is Nintendo's first attempt at something like this? I mean it's understandable, but no, it doesn't. The best thing to come out of this generation is the improved storytelling in video games. Games like Bioshock, Red Dead Redemption, GTAIV, Mass Effect, Uncharted, Portal, Ghost Trick, etc. have all raised the bar considerably in this area. Really, I'm beyond fine with Nintendo not including narrative in their games at all or doing so minimally, but if you're gonna have a lot of story in a game these days, you better know how to do it right.

I don't believe I said they deserve a pass, but I want them to continue to learn from it and improve upon it instead of abandoning it because it was flawed.

I think most of the negativity around it is more over people's perceptions of who Samus should and shouldn't be based on their own interpretations from the limited characterization of her in previous games, more so then the story itself, that aspect alone seems to have created the most hostility.

It's not an issue of "perception" or "interpretation" when Samus acts completely contrary to the character established in previous games.  You want to argue that in the NES and Super NES Metroids that Samus was merely an avatar for the player because modern storytelling conventions weren't common back then?  Fine, but it doesn't explain how the Samus in Other M is completely different from the one shown in the Metroid Prime games, which were created with full cutscenes (albeit largely unvoiced).  But just like how Sakamoto almost seems to go out of his way to not reference the Western-made and more financially/critically successful Prime games, he likewise also probably didn't want to acknowledge the Samus character solidified by Western developers.

Both Fusion and Zero Mission also IIRC had internal monologue cutscenes and some dialogue, and Samus wasn't anywhere near as whiny and emotionally unstable as she was in Other M.  I don't remember reading posts and articles around the release of any of those games from people saying that "that's not Samus", yet that was commonly the case with Other M.  Other M's Samus is just very incongruous from her previous depictions, especially when it comes to her dealings with Ridley (which I've extensively detailed in my previous posts on this matter).  In fact, the only other Metroid product that apparently has a similar Samus was a Japan-only manga, to which I say "if it's not consistent with the other games, it's not canon."

Samus had little to no personality in the Prime games, they largely referenced the Avatar esque take on her. Other M was really the first game to truly delve into her complexities as a character, and I APPRECIATE that. I've always viewed Other M as a retcon/reimagining of the series, including Samus, to push it beyond the avatar portrayal of Samus.

And of course no one complained about Samus in the Prime games, they hardly even dealt with her character at all. They are fantastic games, but hardly attempted to make her a complex, real, character, in fact they primarily took the easy way out and didn't really touch on who she is at all. Fusion and Other M have been the first real attempts to flesh out, and yes, in some ways, retcon/reimagine Samus as a real character, not a cliche masculinized bounty hunter.

Besides, whether one likes it or not, I get the feeling Sakamoto would not consider the Prime games canon, and frankly he likely has the most control (besides Nintendo themselves) over what is and isn't. I'd argue that the Samus in Fusion, personality wise, is contradictory to the Prime depiction of her. And with Ridley, if the Prime games aren't considered Canon, she would have destroyed Ridley only twice previously. To see him come back a third time would have to be emotionally jarring to say the least. We also have to keep in mind that Sakamoto based her character off of Ripley of the Alien series, and she too experienced post-traumatic stress disorder when she re encountered the alien species again and had to overcome that trauma (like Samus did in Other M).

Anyway, this discussion will keep going around and around, so I'm stepping out of the discussion. I'll just end by saying I am glad Nintendo is giving Samus a personality, and making her more then the typical emotionless hero found in other games. If it contradicts the Prime games, then so be it, because I don't believe they even really tried to make her an emotionally complex character. I want to see the series evolve beyond being all alone and without emotion. If it takes some retconning or eliminating some games from the series canon, then so be it.

I enjoyed Other M, and found it to be a promising new step for the series, even if it has some major flaws in its storytelling, including how Samus was depicted (I do NOT think her characterization was perfect by any means, but I found it much better in this then any other game in the series which felt awfully generic and cliche).
