Title: 360 costs $715 to make
Post by: nemo_83 on December 29, 2005, 03:06:43 PM
You may have seen this rumor floating around.  Joysiq is reporting MS has manufactured their shortage because they don't want to lose more money; the IBM chip still costs a lot to mass produce.

Apparently the IBM chip is what is costing MS the most.  This raises the question of whether Sony might be lying about the cost of their console (and or what it can do).

I'm skeptical of these numbers... especially since they cite them as common from an "anonymous" insider.

But if Microsoft was really worried about not losing money... they wouldn't get into the game in the first place.

MS's sole goal is to own everything and everybody even if they must waste their vast fourtune.

ms goal was to get dev. with xbox, to build hype with 360, and to take over with the next xbox. But that not going to happen when the rev comes and killthe xbox!

715 dollars?  I'm having a hard time swallowing down that figure...I'm guessing in the 500s is where the true value is at, but I'm not a tech expert...

Why don't we think about it like this.  Can anybody try to build a computer with similar parts and then take about a 30% discount on all parts and that could give you a good estimate on how much it costs.  (Ok, probably not the most accurate way of doing things.)  But I really doubt it costs $700.

if it costs Microsoft $715 to make one of these, why don't they just start buying them on eBay?

Personally I think the shortage was from launching in the three major territories weeks from each other, then having the heat problems were they have to "redesign" the console before continuing. (Probally by putting in a better cooling solution.)

The claims I've read was that the chip yield was significantly lower than expected, leading to a shortage.

How much could the Japan launch have set them back, 20-30 systems?

I think the shortage was due to a number of "problems", not the least of which being MS probably wanted a shortage.

As for the cost to produce a 360...I do find it very hard to beleive that.

Although, it would explain all the different "levels" of 360 you can buy.

I think that the shortage was due to the fact that MS is full of retards and dumbasses that don't know what the fudge they're doing.

$715 seems a little bit steep even for Microsoft.  Not to say that isn't real but I remember all the inflated nos for PS2 as well.

Video games in elementary school are like cars in high school.

Then Gran Turismo came along and everything went emo and fell apart.

You mean when they use to be just toys. Yes I remember those days. Because Video Games have alway been "luxury items".

$50 is luxury when you're a kid. Even now that I can afford them, I hate paying that much for a damn game. I feel very Jewish when the new systems start launching.

And to hell with $35 DS games.
