Title: Episode 315: Nintendo Launch Alliance
Post by: Norex on November 24, 2012, 09:27:09 PM

Wii U is all the New Business we need.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/32604

For this special Thanksgiving episode, we recorded a bit early and did one long segment. The subject, of course, is Wii U. Jonny's launch system was broken, and James got his just hours before the show, but we have the power trio of Guillaume, Billy, and first-timer Ariel to deliver the goods. They dish out tons of impressions for Mario, Nintendo Land, Miiverse, and the whole setup process. Ariel also praises the Wii U version of Call of Duty: Black Ops II, while Billy tries to explain Chasing Aurora, and Guillaume marvels at Nano Assault Neo.

We want to hear about your own experiences with Wii U, so please email the show with your stories and questions about the new system. Also, be sure to check out the RFN-themed Mafia game in the forums! See you next week when things get back to quasi-normal, and maybe Jonny will have his system by then.

Thanks for the shout out for the sign ups on the Mafia game guys. I guess I will listen to this episode as thanks.

Just listened to the part about wii to wii u transfer, I'm glad I didn't end up doing it, I plan on keeping the other console handy for my wii stuff, gamecube controllers are a big part of how I play with friends. I wish I could choose what parts of the data move over so I don't have to download all the games stored on my SD.

As someone who hadn't purchased a COD since COD4:Modern Warfare, Black Ops II has been a lot of fun.  The Wii U version is great with the ability to play on the touch screen while my wife watches tv or a movie with me, and I have had very little problem with online lag or finding matches (unless it's at odd times in the morning or REALLY late at night).

The Miiverse integration doesn't sound all that different from the various Steam community features. You've got a main community feed where you can pretty much tweet things and it also tracks recommendations, screenshots, purchases and achievements of your friends. Each game has a community hub and a forum that usually includes at least one "is it worth it?" thread, especially when a game is on sale.

kdr_11k - Having these messages show up in your games is pretty new though. I'm sure we'll talk more about it on ep 316...

Tybo68 - I've ended up doing the transfer on Sunday. The actual transfer took about an hour, and redownloading invididual games from the Wii Shop is just brutal.

Just listening to the podcast, hearing the woes of the TV that won't set the screen to the right size (either the image is too big, or there's a black box around it). There is a system-wide screen size setting (I don't have the Wii U in front of me, so I can't exactly say where it is), but I think it's in the system settings (or possibly the GamePad settings for some reason). It lets you expand and contract the screen size and saves that for all use, and might fix that problem.

If I had to guess as to why the wii to wii U transfer is such a pain, it's to prevent the exploits on the wii from occurring again on wii U.  There are vids of people still crashing wii Mode using the smash bros brawl SD card hack, so you can boot into homebrew, but the wii U prevents you from installing anything homebrew.  So if I had to guess why they make you jump through loops, it's to prevent piracy from trespassing into wii U again.  A pain in the butt on a consumer level, but it'll make developers less weary of their games being pirated.

I guess I just don't understand why 3DS is so far hack-free and it didn't required DSiware to be played in DSi Mode, in which you find the DSi Shop with its clunky old interface and all as the sole means of redownloading your DSiware games.

I'm guessing the SD thing is just because the files are encrypted and the private key can't be transferred like that.

Wait, if the Homebrew Channel still works in Wii Mode, does that mean you can still play Import Wii games on the Wii U?

Like I'm sure most everyone else in the world, I miss Lindemann, but I must say you guys have a done a good job filling his chair in his absence. Nate Andrews fit in pretty nicely and now Ariel, who did a good job on the Child's Play telethon, also seems like a pretty natural fit. The bench is deep at NWR.

EDIT: And obviously TYP did a great job too but everyone already knew that.

Thanks for an interesting, very detailed Podcast! This is my first time listening, and I’ll be sure to tune in regularly going forward. During the Podcast you briefly mention a Wiiware title – but it was hard to catch the name (after rewinding a couple of times, sounded like "Lamma Lanna". Doing some digging, I’m presuming it is La-Mulana. I hadn’t heard of this game before, but I am going to see if it is available for download on Wiiware – Wikipedia seems to state it isn’t available in North America. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La-Mulana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La-Mulana)

Um, Wikipedia says North America got it on WiiWare on September 20 (andi said that at least for a few weeks since I checked awhile ago).

Hey Coldheat, glad you liked the show! The game I mentioned is indeed La-Mulana, and it is out in North America for 1000 Wii Points. It's very hard, but huge and incredibly satisfying. If you've played Spelunky, imagine that with Metroid level designs and crazy, world-spanning puzzles.

And no permadeath.

I think NSMB is pretty much Nintendo's Call of Duty: Sells huge but is low on innovation because they're afraid that they might break it. I think they'll keep making 3D Marios, by the looks of it their teams much prefer making those and put much more effort into them but the market demands 2D Mario more than 3D Mario, hence attempts to merge the two in Super Mario 3D Land.

I went on basically the exact same odyssey Gui did trying to setup my friends list.  Glad to see I'm not the only one.

Oho! Sounds like at least a couple of you guys have picked up Zombiu after all! Been enjoying the range of impressions that have accompanied this game and even if I don't end up enjoying the game itself (no WiiU, here) I can appreciate how ambitious and interesting it is. Tickled that Iwata did an Asks with the team, too.

Really enjoyed this episode, guys. Always great to hear Billy weigh in and some good discussion by Ariel in his NWR podcast debut! Hopefully Lindy can re-activate shortly but in the meanwhile, would also love to hear from Kohler again. I trust that Mr. Leahy will be making an appearance soon to discuss his new console?

Hey, yeah I heard about the tv screen size issue. If you go into the Miiverse, and select your user menu, there is a setting there to set your screen size. I have no idea why Nintendo would put it there but there it is. Hope that helps.
