Wait what if I actually do want to play as Goro but I refuse to shop at Game Stop oh now what do I do. Damn it all to hell. Now how am I supposed to enjoy the greatest fighting game in history.

General Chat / The perfect slasher film
« on: March 07, 2015, 10:50:00 PM »
Alright so I have always been a fan of slasher films. My favorites are the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th series but I often enjoy a good lesser known film like Sleepaway Camp from time to time. I have give this a lot of thought if I want to get into film making one genre I really want to do is a slasher film. I know they are cliche and tired but I still love the formula and think there is still some room for a new slasher.

I haven't decided how I would do it, maybe create an elaborate back story that involves a tragic figure becoming a villain. Sticking to the tried and true formula to the letter and just coming up with a unique gimmick. Or maybe just making a complete cheesy knock off of one of the classics. Either way I would love to make a slasher movie, low budget and completely gory as hell but not rely entirely on the gore maybe use some cheap tricks and camera angles.

If there are any slasher fans who might want to swap ideas feel free to post them here. If there are any other aspiring film makers, story tellers, or otherwise creative people who just want to offer their tips, advice, or random thoughts please do not hesitate.

I am transferring to UNL, in Lincoln where they have an actual film program and my goal is to get into movies. Currently I am working for a low budget TV station in the middle of Nebraska so I need to start looking ahead to the future.

I also want to do a real psychological thriller movie based on a book I wrote but never published but I would like to get my feet wet doing something low profile and a slasher is a pretty basic horror style to jump into. I figure it would be easier than a Zombie flick and far more interesting than a cheap haunted house movie.

Problem is its barely a step above doing porn so I am not entirely sure how good it would be for my career if I ever plan on having a serious film career.

General Chat / How do you define alternative music?
« on: March 05, 2015, 05:26:10 PM »
So some guys at work were having a discussion about what bands/sounds are considered alternative. We were specifically talking about the 90's rock scene like Bush, Nirvana, NIN and the like. Someone mentioned they thought Alternative was Beck and "crap like that" someone else said no it was Marylin Manson and someone else said it was just a fancy word for grunge. I never realized how divided people could be on alternative music. I used to listen to this one alternative radio station years ago and always assumed everything that they played fit the bill until I heard Beastie Boys on there and had to rethink what I considered Alternative music.

What are some other thoughts on this, like what bands or sounds do you consider alternative? Does it have a different meaning to you than just anti-establishment or underground? Is Nirvana or Marylin Manson alternative and if they are both how can that be they are nothing a like.

Feel free to discuss.

Hey off course I believe in bad luck I mean, I take my ex-girl friend out to a nice restaurant on Valentines Day Friday the 13th and she goes a head and breaks up with me anyways. At least I got $5 in the wallet so take that, life.

So they suck you in with an awesome promotional price then force you to Autorrenew to keep the price in tact only to CHANGE the price the DAY before **** expires what ends up happening is they basically want you to pay double what you agreed for LESS storage and LESS features. What a bunch of bull ****. Unfortunately that means I have to once again close down my latest blog/website. This sucks because thespideslair was actually my best website to date and I am so pissed. I could pay $15 to just keep the domain and find a Word Press webhosting plan elsewhere but its not worth it I will migrate everything back to the fucking free site and to hell with it. I hate this but I am not able to pay more money for LESS features. Bull ****.

Nintendo Gaming / Simle way to create a 3DS player for Wii U
« on: March 02, 2015, 03:33:06 PM »
I want this, a USB dongle that plugs into the Wii U and its just a 3DS/DS card reader nothing more. All it does is reads the data off the DS/3DS cart and runs the game on the Wii U. I do NOT want a stupid Virtual Console filled with DS games playable on Wii U what I want is an actual device I buy and plug it into my Wii U and can plug in those carts and play them on my TV, or Game Pad as I see fit. This is a win-win for Nintendo they sell a device at a reasonable cost its a hardware sale, then they sell tons more DS and 3DS software to someone not interested in the hand held device.

Just bringing those games to Virtual Console is not going to cut it because it would be one damn game a month and who has time to wait around for that? Who else thinks this might be a doable solution? Would you buy this device if it existed? It could even support New 3DS software if they wanted to. Maybe this will get announced at E3?

Nintendo Gaming / New Games coming to Wii U idea thread
« on: March 02, 2015, 03:23:52 PM »
Okay so now that Wii U is no longer a walking corpse on life support and there is a chance for games coming back to the console, lets discuss games we think should come to Wii u no matter how unrealistic they are. Discuss games you think belong on Wii U but aren't, list games you think would be awesome on Wii U and might actually get other people excited for it, and NO Pokemon discussion please that's not productive.

Here are a few games just from my experience I would think are perfect fit for a Wii U even if the powers that be are not exactly interested.

1. Monopoly Party
Something along those lines any multiplayer Monopoly type game not just because I love Monopoly games but Wii U, like all Nintendo consoles before it, is perfect fit for party games. I know Mario Party 10 is going to sell well and I expect it to excite that core demographic for Wii U so would like to see more board game/party games but especially Monopoly.

2. Board games
any board games turned into party games would be fine for that matter. Sure not the ideal most desirable selection but hey we gotta take what we can get and I am hoping for the best here so games like Clue, Battleship, Candyland, etc could all be turned into video games/party games pretty easily. An interactive party game based on Mouse Trap might even be fun.

3. Retro remakes
Sony is kicking ass with these, lots of them so I would like to see more, preferably collections like Metroid Prime Trilogy. Okay not too many but maybe a Kirby collection that collects his better games all in HD remakes. Bring out a Pikmin 1-3 HD remake collection, maybe even something that collects Super Mario 64 with Sunshine and include the DS-specific stuff all redone in HD would be fun. Not over due it but lets get a few more NES Remix and Mario Maker type games too since the resources and coding is likely done those would be easy to tweak. SNES remix is obvious so would be like a Game and Watch thing would be cool too. Maybe an Arcade Remix collection bring in some 3rd parties like Capcom and Konomi and whats left of Sega/Atari to really make it shine.

4. Final Fantasy HD Remakes
I don't want Nintendo or partners to over do it with Hd Remakes but we NEED a Final Fantasy on this console. The ones that make the most sense are complete remakes of 6(3), 4(2), Crystal Chronicles (GC), and a complete HD remake of the GBA and DS games would be great. THE MOTHER  of these is Super Mario RPG but I suspect that will be ditched in favor of another Paper Mario game, which is fine bring it on but still I want a REAL FF game and not just the mainline one that I will be getting on PS4 because there is no chance in hell Wii U gets it, might as well settle for a good remake to hold us over plus for the fun replay/collector value.

5. Classic Collections
I know we had a ton of these on PS2 and Wii has Virtual Console but there is no reason we can'tg et a few classics collected on disc to replace the lousy Virtual Console experience on Wii U. I know Steam has really picked up lately in this area as is PSN so Nintendo could convince a few companies to throw a few more their way especially a Capcom, Namco, Midway, Atari, NEO GEO, and Sega collections they might need to really put some effort into add ons but hey I think there is still a market for those types of games.

6. Sim City
Why is this not a thing on Wii U? They could do again a REMAKE, enhanced port of Sim City Classic, incorporate features from the SNES version too why not, and either base it on the current Sim City engine or return to the original either way Wii U with its Game Pad NEEDS A Sim City game, and other Sim type games while we are at it, maybe some new RTS games too.

7. Diablo 3
I know its a late port but again wouldn't it make sense to have this game on Wii U? I have it on PS4 so its already got late to next gen syndrome so why not one more platform?

8. Star Wars/Disney RPG cross over game
Something like Kingdom Hearts in a way a full fledge RPG or dungeon crawler featuring Disney and Star Wars characters mixed into the same universe. Or a full on Marvel/Disney/Star Wars thing. I know there is Infinity but I am thinking something like Kingdom hearts or similar but no toys involved. I doubt this will happen but it might be cool.

9. More Star Wars games
As far as I can tell there is just the one Angry Birds so thats not going to cut it we need some more action games hopefully something gets announced to tie into the new movie sooner or latter.

10. Since we have done Lego to Death why not Micro Machines? Or even Hot Wheels? I know these games are lame but they tend to do well on the platform and at this point racing games are so thin its almost better than nothing. Still hoping for that 90s Arcade Racer to be a thing but not holding my breath for that.

11. Mario Paintball
I know we are getting Splatoon and I hope it sell so well they actually do decide to create a Mario Paintball game for a follow up. Any paintball game featuring interesting characters would be welcome for the console at this point but Mario Paintball has a real chance if Splatoon is the new Pokemon we are all hoping it turns out to be.* Not literally Pokemon but sales behemoth they desperately need to move Wii U units.

12. Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, Mega Man, and Shinobi games
A new entry in each of those series would be welcome. brand new tailored for the Wii U audience not the port of the console games the others will likely get. Ninja Gaiden it will be like a side scrolling action game with Tropic Freeze type graphics you know all computer 3D rendered but 2 D game play. Castlevania will be a true to from Metroidvania type Symphony of the Night style2D action platformer specific to Wii u. Mega Man would be a hyrbid game probably a re-imagining of past Mega man games akin to what they are attempting with Mighty Number 9 but set in the proper Mega Man universe. Maybe like a full enhanced modern day remix of the classic games all rolled up into one super game. Shinobi I would settle for anything at this point a clone of the main stream Ninja gaiden, a 2d action platformer, a 3D action adventure, even just an enhanced remake/reimagining of one of the previous games I don't care I just wish of all Sega's properties this one would get a second chance. Golden Axe would be cool too but that is kind of asking a lot.

13. Doom Wolfenstein House of the Dead and Duke Nukem
Just get the ones that are on PSN or find an excuse to make a new game in each or a collection something these games would play well with the Game Pad or wii Remote even. Give me an excuse to keep the Wii remote that isn't just to go into Wii mode.

14. Music generator software
Something that lets you use the stylus to write notes like on sheet music and arrange the sounds how you want, change pitch, tone, timing, assign different stock instruments something along those lines and let you add either stock cartoony characters and graphics to make mock music videos or a full on Nintendo themed orchastra type thing. I real proper music generator that gives you total control of everything. I don't know what Wii Music was like so I don't know if it would be like that or not but something that lets you use the stylus to write in notes on sheet music and create musical works. Maybe let you share your creations online or whatever.

That is all I could think of. Now that Wii U is sort of coming back to life I am kind of getting excited it might have a chance at really getting some fun games now and would like to hear other people's dream ideas. NO Pokemon dang it don't even suggest it.

NWR Forums Discord / The official how stupid are we as a species thread
« on: February 28, 2015, 01:37:10 AM »
Post your idiotic goofs for the whole world to know we all do totally stupid things.

Mine is typical of the kind of guy I am. My issue is with Netflix all I want is for the My List to be easily accessible so I know where it is. I want to open my PS4 Netflix app sign into my profile and there is mylist organized by title manually by me so I can get to my show right away, is that too much to ask. Why is this an issue? Because time is scarce and it saves time. So what do I do when I log in and notice My List has dropped down a few rows? Do I spend oh maybe 2 minutes of my day pressing down on the joystick as I look for the missing row? Now of course not that would be the sane, rational thing to do. As we all know those two words don't fit my personality one but. Nope I become how can I put it, frustrated that the list I want is missing and I have to spend *my* time looking for it. So what do I do, I actually waste an hour and a fucking half on the phone with Netflix customer support bitching about something that would have taken me 2 minutes to resolve on my own.

yeah so turns out I can be a total ass in real life too without even trying. At least I was calm the whole time and managed to use it as an excuse to ask questions in general about things going on and I sort of got an unofficial but maybe truer than we might think reason for why the Wii U App does not support profiles.
In my conversation I go over every issue that gripes me because **** at this point I am committed to the cause and there is no turning back that hour and a half is gone too late to watch a movie now. So I proceed to press them not on Wii U as a device but on their lack of Japanese as a language option under Preferences on the main site. So after a few minutes of griping and badgering, I am escalated to a higher up at this point as I often press for once they fail to provide a proper response to whatever issue I am calling about.

Anyways it turns out that the real reason for not having  Japanese Language as an option ties into why Nintendo cares so little about the Wii U App. According to the guy they do not currently have Netflix in Japan and that is why they do not have a true Japanese section and why Nintendo cares so little about the App. It was kind of different with Wii apparently because the thing was such a success Nintendo had to approach Netflix or something. Anyways the person on the phone indicated that while they are not sure about the actual App it self they DO know that Japan is getting Netflix sometime this year and after that deal goes through supposedly Nintendo will be working with Netflix to develop more content and at that point they might be interested in making changes to the App.

Not really true investigative journalism in fact its probably standard CSR Bull **** to get me off the phone. But anyways it does offer some insight into Nintendo's possible motive for not caring about the Netflix App considering they are such a Japan centric company.

Oh and it reminded me that I need to spend less time on the internet and more time doing other things with my life. So again keeping with the theme of the thread instead of actually learning a valuable lesson and doing something productive with my late night, I spend it writing up a long winded post on the internet that will not get read by any significant number of people. Yep productive use of my limited time on this planet.

General Chat / Does Nirvana actually suck?
« on: February 18, 2015, 02:00:17 PM »
I will be tackling this question in a new blog entry soon on my website. I always hear people express some band as the greatest ever but it is always when someone from said band is dead and usually only after their death they get that legacy.

The question I am wanting to answer is, while Nirvana was a good band for their time do they really  deserve to be remembered as greatest of all time, or even a great band? On that note is it possible they aren't even great at all but actually quite terrible and we were all duped into thinking they were great because  we got caught up in the whole whole 90's anti-80's-screw-fashion-lets-all-be-dirty-lazy-reckless-not give a **** attitude?

The real question I want to consider is not just were they actually good, that to me seems like the first obvious place to start. I then want to follow up with if they are good were they really as good as people make them out to be or if they weren't really that good how did we get duped into thinking they were? Don't get me wrong I had Nevermind, who didn't and I rocked out to it like all 90's teens did but I still think that there is a good chance they are not just over rated and over hyped but might actually have been a true fluke.

I will be examining this from the perspective of a long time question. What I have done is intentionally not allowed myself to listen to or be exposed to anything relating to Nirvana in almost a decade. I occasionally play their two big tracks Smells like Teen Spirit and Come as You are from time to time during appropriate sets of music experience but I have gone out of my way to remove them from my conscious as much as possible in an effort  to be truly objective. I am hoping that I won't be tainted by nostalgia in this quest either because while they did rock hard in the early part of the decade, I was still heavy into Hip-Hop and gangsta rap then so I actually missed them during their peak and only heard about them after he killed himself, or his wife killed him whatever story you want to believe.

Anyways I can safely say that aside from rare occasions where it was inevitable I didn't actively listen to their music much but  I did have their CD at one point and I gave it a complete play through when I was 16. Then I put it on the shelf and pretty much forgot about it, in reality as far as that type of rock music went I actually listened to Collective Soul self titled album far more than I ever did Nevermind. My favorite band of that era was actually Garbage followed closely by No Doubt so there is a good chance Nirvana was just too grunge or too I don't know fringe for me?

Anyways I plan on actually listening through each of their works including watching live performances of concerts if I can find the recordings as well as any music videos, MTV appearances, etc that I can dig up and will evaluate them both musically, culturally, as well as intellectually as a case study of music having an impact on our society.

This is not my first in depth query of this type, I actually wrote a comprehensive retrospective on the development and evolution of disco, funk and soul as it morphed into Hip-Hop/Rap, Techno/House, and Club/Dance music of today. I am sharing this here with music lovers who might be interested in checking out this piece when I have completed it.

I will try to do it as a blog editorial type piece but I will be looking at cultural impact and societal factors that might have helped contribute to the myth of this band if that makes any sense. Not that this sort of thing hasn't been explored before but this will be my take on it from the perspective of someone who was there at the time but really didn't get caught up in the music as much as the movement.

I will be using methods I have learned in critical thinking and anthropology courses as well as looking at it from a linguistics perspective which is where my major focus of study lies. I hope that this turns out to be en exciting journey and I look forward to sharing my findings with those who might be interested. This has been a long project coming. This will be a sub-series within a new blog series I began called the playlist project where I will analyze different styles and movements of music from different perspectives in order to satisfy my own curiosity as well as to offer a different, hopefully unique perspective.

There is a very real chance I might discover what others have believed for a long time, or I might uncover the hidden truth behind the myth. Anyways it will be a fun exorcise in musical exploration.

Nintendo Gaming / Another Wii U games thread.
« on: February 16, 2015, 02:16:00 PM »
Alright so finding lists of games on Wii U is easy, how about this, does anyone who has a Wii U recommend any games that are available on other consoles that the Wii U version is still worth owning either in place of or in companion to those versions?

I know people cite Rayman Legends as having sold more on Wii U but it is on PS4 so my question is would it be better to get on PS4 or Wii U? Are there games that the Wii U versions is literally good enough or as good as the PS4 version or Ps3 version or is it always just skip multiplats on Wii U?

I am curious because frankly I have gotten all Wii U native games I plan on until Splatoon gets released all I can do now is go back and catch up on Wii games I missed, which is fine but I still want more Wii U software to sort of justify owning this thing.

In other words are they games on Wii U that are on other consoles but the Wii U version is still worth owning or are there games that the Wii U versions is not any better or worse than PS3/PS4 version or any games where the Wii U version is actually the better version?

General Chat / Good tablets out there that can replace a laptop?
« on: February 07, 2015, 01:43:12 PM »
Last time I shopped for tablets it was a disappointing sea of toys pretending to be real computers. That has been a couple of years so I am curious who here has a tablet or know of one that can truly replace a general purpose laptop?

Here is what I do and what I would want in a tablet.

I need MS office, not the fake Office the real deal, I use it for work, school, and everything else.

I need it to be capable of playing Netflix and Youtube but those are pretty much a given at this point.

Pandora and Spotify would also be nice but not mandatory.

iTunes is sort of essential though since I use it for my iPod, does that limit me to iPad or are there Windows Tablets that can run a version of iTunes? Specifically ripping CD's to my library, managing my library and burning CD's, I have an external Blu Ray burner that I can use IF said tablet supports such a device via USB. Otherwise are there Tablets that have CD Roms in them?

I run the following emulators, I would need these working
Arcade (mame, neo geo, Daphne, and Naomi)
Sega (SMS, GG, Genesis, 32X, CD, Saturn and Dreamcast)
Nintendo (NES, SNES, N64, GB, GBC, GameCube, GBA, DS and Wii)
Atari (8 Bit, ST, 2600, 5200, 7800, Jag, Jag CD, Lynx)
Commodore (VIC-20, PET, 64, 128, Amiga)
3DO (that is asking a lot I know)
DOS (using Dos Box at the moment could use something different)
Turbo Grafix-16, Turbo CD, and SGX
Apple (II and III family mostly using MESS)

video editing- I use Vegas Professional but I could migrate to something different, we use Edius at work so something like that or any of the Adobe ones would work something of that caliber not a toy like movie maker

audio editing- same situation I use Acid mostly but I can use something similar

general web surfing

Photoshop or something comparable.

So is there hope I can find a tablet that can meet those needs or should I just stick to getting a new Laptop instead?

I got my tax refund today. I am going to spend it on paying bills then I am going to go to work and watch some TV.

I am still pissed they are remaking Ghostbusters instead of making number 3. Sure one of the main guys died so that sucks but still come on. The bright side is this movie will give people something to complain about for decades and just might take some of the sting away from the new Star Wars if they happen to suck.

Also Obama is kind of a bummer right now, dude can't live up to the hype thought he was supposed to end war once and for all.

And what the hell is up with that Christopher Columbus anyways? Dude can't sail and gets a whole nation of people named after him still pisses me off.

Also you suck look in the mirror your life is going no where just give up already thanks for playing have a good day.

Nintendo Gaming / Wii U in the grand scheme of things.
« on: February 07, 2015, 12:24:57 AM »
Now that I have had my console for a few months and its had a couple of years to stick around it occurs to me this thin isn't just a fluke we can sweep under the rug and pretend it never happened, its here to stay we might as well accept it.

So I was curious who here who owns a Wii U can rank in amongst the previous console generations?
I was thinking for me personally despite my initial dislike of the console itself, which I still do to some extent, I have come to accept it is Nintendo's current console and does belong to their legacy. I think for me I would rank it right above Wii and N64 but still beneath GameCube, SNES, and NES. I know the generation isn't over but the games that are out, to me anyways, still feel superior to their N64 and Wii counterparts, or at least the ones I am familiar with.

What are some other peoples thoughts?

I still rank SNES at the top. If I had to rank them numerically I would do so as follows

1. SNES + Super Game Boy
GB Tetris helps put it over the top

2. Game Cube + Game Boy Player
On its own I rank it number 3 so GBA games help it a lot

3. NES
Nostalgia mostly keeps it in the running but its not aged well as a console.

4. Wii U
Super Mario 3D World is probably the greatest video game ever made. Or at least the greatest 3D Mario game ever made. Or the greatest Mario game ever made. I love this game.

5. N64
It was close but honestly this machine has aged far worse than NES. The TWO games I can still go back and replay, Super Mario 64, and Zelda, are playable on newer, better consoles so there is no reason to ever bother with this tired old geezer.

6. Wii
I won't lie I loved it at first, fell in love with the virtual console, the motion controls, the hype, the Mii's were a novelty but I liked them at first. Once the novelty faded and I got more experience on my friends 360 I slowly started to lose interest in this thing. It had some great ideas but it was the weakest of all their consoles, not just graphically but games wise I felt also. It was sort of propped up by Virtual Console but strip that away and suddenly it doesn't look so hot. I had to rank Wii U a notch above because it technically still *is* a Wii.

That is just where I rank it among Nintendo consoles, gaming in general however it does not fair so well. PS1, PS2, PS3, Genesis, Atari VCS, even Sega CD and Dreamcast do I rank higher than Wii U, and yes even those that fall beneath it as well. This is just me but I do rank Wii U a notch above original Xbox but probably tied with 360.

Where do others fall into this?

I think when it is all said and done Wii U will be remembered as a bomb compared to gaming as a whole but it will turn around and pull up there with GC and N64 for many people. I personally loved the Game Cube and wish it didn't have to morph into Wii. I almost ranked Wii a notch up just because it is technically a Game Cube but then I remembered it lacks Game Boy Player support so it wasn't a fair fight.

Nintendo Gaming / B/C back in the day?

Here is a topic for thought, we all have imagined what N64 would have been like if it had featured CD Rom instead of cartridge, but what if it had remained the same, cart only but instead supported SNES playback, would that have been possible, if so would it have made a difference to YOU, the market, or gaming in general?

I liked two, the one with the giant Pac-Man and the one with the cats, that was about it. I wasn't paying close attention to any of it I was doing last minute writing on a term paper and an essay for school while chatting with my girlfriend who is out of town.

General Chat / starting a new website/project
« on: January 28, 2015, 09:55:22 AM »
So back ground time. Most of you know my story, failed musician trying to shift into TV. So I got a job at a local news station after going back to school to earn a degree in mass media. Major has changed a few times but my love of music, video production, and trying new things continues. A couple of guys at work, far more likable and professional than I, want to do a podcast. I have some technical experience and well we all have I think interesting ideas. So here is the deal depending on how things work out we will be creating a new website to promote our media projects. I will help edit and contribute to the podcast as well as work on some video projects on the side that I have been putting off for far too long.

The first topic is going to be the Interview. It should be good we have one guy who hated it, one guy who loved it and one guy who is indifferent so hopefully it will be interesting.

I have also given up the rap thing, and invested in better electronic equipment for making more quality dance music. I will be contributing music to the project but there is a guy at work who plays in a rock band, they have a couple cd's out and are making a name forthemselves, there is a chance they might contribute music to the project as well.

In addition to the podcast we are going to try to put together an internet radio station type deal. Not going to get too into details until/unless something actually happens but I would be interested in getting advice, criticisms from others here especially those in the media, entertainment, and podcasting arena.
