This game is pretty damn good! Will elaborate after I play a bit more (unless someone beats me to it).

Was only a matter of time. Millions of dollars down the tubes and thousands of staff laid off over at EA this past quarter. Dumping loads of development dollars into HD gaming with weak returns is not the way to go. I will be expecting more of this.

Of course, Dead Space is a great way to start. But I'm excited by this refocus on the Wii and commitment to bring core titles to the platform.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Leads December NPD Sales Results
« on: January 18, 2009, 11:02:35 AM »
Speaking of other home consoles, the multiplatform Call of Duty: World at War took both the second highest-selling position (Xbox 360 version) and the ninth (PS3). Versions of World at War have also been released on the Wii, DS, and PS2, but none of these titles have shown up on NPD's charts.

This will only serve to further fuel discussion over the viability of the first-person shooter genre on the Nintendo Wii, especially with Wii-exclusive The Conduit scheduled for release in spring 2009. In contrast to the genre's questionable representation on Nintendo platforms, every Xbox 360 and PS3 title in the NPD top 10 are shooters, including the Xbox 360's Gears of War 2 (sixth place) and Left 4 Dead (seventh place).

This report contains information from the NeoGAF Official NPD thread, as well as reports from IGN, and Nintendo's Official December NPD Press Release.

But the Wii version WAS shown on the chart... just not the top 10. It charted 19th. So yeah, it did really well. Better than LBP. Better than Resistance 2. How 'bout that.

Spoiler WarningBut even if TYP meant compositionally and not technically better, I would argue that Hirasawa's soundtrack lacks the fluff and the near constant motif repetition that almost all of Kondo's soundtracks have, including (and especially) Star Fox 64.

I agree. Starfox on SNES had an AMAZING soundtrack. I was more impressed with it than I was with Starfox 64's soundtrack from a technical standpoint. SF64 used a very rudimentary sound library. A lot better had been done with the N64 musically (just listen to JFG or Turok 2 - both of which had more realistic sounding synth).

As far as compositions, both are equally remarkable. Hajime Hirasawa did reprise the main theme many times in the original Starfox, just as much as Kondo did in Starfox 64, but in Starfox, Hirasawa had it woven into the in-level compositions very, very nicely. This didn't happen with Starfox 64 because Kondo was only responsible for the main theme, title theme, and fanfares. All of the fanfares and end-of-level compositions were arrangements of the main theme and title theme - as was the ending theme. You never heard the main theme or title theme referenced during the in-level music because all of that was composed by Hajime Wakai.

SPOILER - I have no idea how to do spoiler text. I thought by changing the text to white, it would blend in. But the background is grey on the forum page, so no dice. Sorry guys.

I'm playing along right now. Just heard the first song and I have no idea what it is. The composition style sounds like Motoi Sakuraba though. The samples used and certain nuances lead me to believe it's certainly Sakuraba. But I have no idea what game it could be.

Edit - Aha! I didn't know the game, but I knew it was him!

Edit 2 - lolz! That instantly recognizable waltz from the Warp level! Game 2 = Done! I wonder whatever happened to Hajime Hirasawa... :-\

Edit 3 - Third game. Clearly NES. And I'm beyond lost... good first song though.

Edit 4 - second some is pretty good too. I still have no idea what game this is...

Edit 5 - What special item do you find in Greece!? Is it Rygar?

Edit 6 - OMG... awesome! I don't know why I didn't get this. It sounded familiar, but I just couldn't nail it for some reason. I played this game and beat it with the Game Genie! It was pretty dope. The latter half of the game was nothing but mazes. And I'll never forget the very last level when you're in the woods and it seems like you're at a dead end. But you have to press "up" between these particular two trees in order to progress in the level

Also, you CONSTANTLY lost energy in this game! Every second, you lost a hit point.

Edit 7 - Game 4 has me lost.

Edit 8 - Game 5... I know I've played this game by listening to the first song. Just need another song and I'll place it for sure. But damn, how many times are you gonna loop song 1!? lol! This is the third loop already... get to song 2!

Edit 9 - WHY AM I NOT GETTING THIS!!!! I know it but I cannot place it, but I remember all this and the previous song! I'm humming along... but I just can't place it... AHHHH!!! You were fighting someone/something during this song... I hear a hint of the main theme just before it loops, but I can't place it!!

Edit 10 - OMFG! Z-DUB! The third song, didn't do anything for me. I could NOT place it! Now I know where that second song came from... the fight with the giant ICE DRAGON! Where you have to adjust the mirrors! Damn, that was fun! I love being stumped like this. I *NEVER* forget a melody, I just forget where they come from sometimes! And this is exactly what happened here!

Edit 11 - Spoiler-proofed everything that should be.

Great job, guys! Can't wait for the next one!

So did Yamauchi have to use his Yakuza connections to make this happen?
DQ always goes to the most selling system.

I wonder which will come out first, DQX or FF13... I bet S-E are kicking themselves already over FF13.

But seriously, announcing X before IX is released?

Yeah, that's why I get the feeling that Yuji Hori let it slip when he really wasn't supposed to. But hey, I'll take it now!

I just put in MOHH2 just to check it out after playing so much CoD:WaW.

First thing I noticed is the fluidity - the 60fps goes a long way for MOHH2. Overall, CoD:WaW has a lot more going on as far as effects are concerned. Another advantage of MOHH2 is the sound design. CoD:WaW is a bit too muted for my taste. I notice I have to turn my receiver up higher than normal to get a decent volume. Also, the sound FX for guns aren't nearly as crisp, clear, and authentic as those in MOHH2. Just squeeze of a M1 Girand in MOHH2 and do the same in CoD:WaW and you'll see exactly what I mean.

With that said, CoD:WaW >>>> MOHH2

It should be selling so much better than it is... :( Hopefully it'll have legs and reach at least 500k worldwide by Xmas.

ShyGuy... wanna swap friend codes?

Also, these two better debut at a sweet $29.99 price tag. Both games on the same disc for $49.99 would be cool as well.

Hardware
Hardware | This Week | Last Week | Last 4 Weeks | YTD | LTD
DS+ | 114,036 | 107,423 | 423,623 | 3,103,426 | 24,276,480
PSP | 55,090 | 61,226 | 198,195 | 3,301,982 | 10,967,059

Hmmm... Looks like the PSP just might not manage to outsell the DS this year after all. This will be fun to watch.

I'll double dip. MP 1&2 with Wii controls is just too enticing for me to pass up. It would probably take a bit of retooling to bump the framerate up to 60 fps, but I'm happy with 16:9 and 480p.

I feel like this game and Deadly Creatures would be awesome to play in tandem. The game looks awesome, I"ve been following it since it was announced.

The latter half of this year is looking really good...

Hmmm... CoD4 engine at 60 fps... Let's hope they nail the controls a la MOHH2. I'm sick of WWII shooters, but if this is good, I'll give it a try.

And holy hell, please go for an M-rating. FPS is the one genre where an M-rating is necessary... leave sanitized war to the Medal of Honor series.

The new media also shows off the controls, which look every bit as good as MOHH2. The bloom on the lights of Mr. Ford's suit look really cool.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wario Land: Shake It!
« on: July 10, 2008, 10:11:47 AM »
They did an excellent job on Wario's animation - I was really impressed at how smoothly he changes direction during a sprint and small touches like his belly shaking after he lands a flip is cool as well. The gameplay just looks fantastic. It seems you'll have to master all of Wario's moves in order to reach all the hidden treasure throughout the stages.

My only beef is having the shake the Wiimote while holding it in classic mode... I don't like that. I haaaaaaated it in Super Paper Mario. Hopefully, you won't have to shake as violently for the motion to register like in SPM.

Other than that, the game looks great. Insta-buy for me for sure.

Everyone buy Gyrostarr. It looks cool and it'll help fund the Conduit.
