New Star Fox 64 3D Details Surface
« on: May 13, 2011, 12:50:35 PM »

The 3DS remake of the N64 classic will have several new modes and expanded multiplayer options.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26300

Nintendo's recent Retail Briefing has revealed new Star Fox 64 3D gameplay details.

A Tsutaya employee who attended the briefing made several Twitter posts via the company's Twitter page about the remake's features. There will be three different game modes: 3DS mode, N64 mode and Battle mode. The posts didn't confirm what the differences are between 3DS and N64 mode, but Battle mode was explained.

Much like the N64 original, Battle mode will support up to four players. It will have download play support, but will lack online play. As an added bonus, an icon of each player's face will hover over them during matches in order to easily identify participating combatants.

Star Fox 64 3D is set to be released in Japan on July 14.

Aww man! I was hoping for at least 6 player battle mode and online. Oh well I should have known, at least the inevitable Cafe/3DS sequal will have it.

What is Download Play?
Is that where one person has a copy of the game and upto 3 others can download a portion of it for multi-player?

And what is the point of releasing this on 3DS and not including online battles at the very least?

I could see this game being somewhat hard to do well online from a latency perspective.  Someone name a flying game battle game that has online thats not Mouse based.  Though I was hoping they expand the multiplayer number to say 8.  Then you could do modes like Star Fox vs Star Wolf.

Also I'm hoping N64 will be just updated graphics and your choice of control options.  Then 3DS will be all that plus new worlds and re-arrangement.

To clarify, here is the key difference between 3DS mode and N64 mode.

3DS Mode:  You control the arwing with the gyroscope.

N64 Mode:  You control the arwing with standard controls (as seen in the included image).

Would it still be in 3D in N64 mode because I don't really won't to play the whole game with the Gyroscope and trying to maintain the sweet spot.

I've never played Starfox 64 so I will definitely be picking this one up.

If the Battle Mode is just like the N64 one, then it's justifiable why they wouldn't make it online-compatible. The N64 Battle Mode was decent for it's time, but it's rather underwhelming for what people expect out of online play now. They would need to add more to it before online play would be reasonable.

If they are gonna re-release the game and charge $34.99(?) after taking the timoe to remake it in 3D, then they could have spent a little bit of time fleshing out the battle mode to bring it upto online play standards.

Not really building a whole lot of confidence with Nintendo online when they don't put any effort towards actually using it.

If they are releasing for $35 I still think this is a better deal then the OoT Remake which is $40.

Ace Combat 6 (Xbox 360) has online play. Also, I played around a free-to-play flight combat online game some time ago. Combat flight simulators on the PC have online modes. Lastly, Ace Combat: Joint Assault (PSP) has online play from what I've read of it.

It's a bummer that Star Fox 64 3DS doesn't have online play. Nintendo could've set an important standard on the system. Or reinforce a standard, looking at the options on Street Fighter IV 3D Edition.

I choose to be optimistic and assume Nintendo's saving online play for the new original Star Fox game they're developing internally right now.

...

That would be the closest analog in that list.  I'm wonder what people are saying about that mode in the game.
