It was about five years ago right now when SUPER and ShiftKey discovered they could do all sorts of crazy shenanigans (like ban people) on the old forums which resulted in the old forums getting taken down and then we got these new shiny forums! It's been a crazy trip, y'all!

EDIT: It's possible I got that history wrong.

Nintendo Gaming / Gunman Clive

Um, this game is great. And it's only $2! To be fair, it's completely derivative of Mega Man, but it's one of those rare knock-offs that's arguably just as good. It's also kind of short, but again, only $2. The moving, jumping, and shooting feels really good and it's really precise. I'm also a fan of the graphical stylings and the music. And it looks way better in 3D.

Basically, if you own a 3DS, you need to get this game.

This is obviously a very tenuous assumption to make. Perhaps Nintendo is just moving things around on their website. Or updates will be so few and far between that it's not worth having a whole separate section on their website for them. Or they are killing the Virtual Console but they'll call it something else when they merge their two eShops into one. Or maybe they're just done releasing old games digitally. WHO KNOWS MAN.

General Gaming / 2012 Game Of The Year Chat
« on: December 23, 2012, 11:30:26 PM »
An informal thread to discuss your highlights of the year in the world of video gaming. Use whatever criteria you want and talk about however many games you want to. Or just do a list if you want to. Or tell other people their picks are stupid. It's your life.

The Walking Dead - I don't really care for The Walking Dead in any version, except this one. The Walking Dead is an episodic adventure game. There are five episodes and each one lasts a couple hours. The gameplay itself isn't anything special, pretty typical adventure game stuff, but the writing is why I'm talking about this game. In each episode, you make many hard choices that will carry on through the rest of the episodes. In some cases, you choose who lives or dies. You will do things you don't want to, sacrifice people you couldn't imagine losing. There's no "winning" this game, just doing the best you can. It's $20 for the whole season on a number of platforms for download, probably one that you own.

Xenoblade - Moving right past the part where I rant about how I question Nintendo's sanity for not giving this game an immediate and proper release, Xenoblade is a great game. I didn't initially care about it because JRPGs usually aren't my bag, but this game does so many things well. Mostly, the scale of it all is amazing. The first time you get out onto Bionis' knee and see the true size of the titans that you are running around on is a jaw dropping moment. A certain Minnesota Vikings punter wrote an article that was filled with complaints and jokes that were at least six years outdated whining that this game wasn't in HD, but I think it looks pretty damn good. Perhaps the detail of it isn't up to snuff, but this is one of the biggest games I've ever played. On top of that, in my playtime, (I'm not done yet) I have yet to encounter any grinding or filler, which I appreciate. The game is a lot of fun, and probably the most impressive game you can play on your Wii.

Mass Effect 3 - No, I'm not trolling. In fact, Mass Effect 3 is definitely the best game I played this year. Admittedly, a lot of that is because of Mass Effect 1 and 2. In most ways, Mass Effect 2 is the more enjoyable game and overall it is a disappointment that these games have gotten smaller, more linear, and more like shooters as the series has gone on. But much like The Walking Dead, this game is here because it is a narrative achievement. Maybe THE narrative achievement, as far as video games go. BioWare spent two games setting up a game world that feels bigger, more realized, more complex than anything I've seen in the medium. A huge cast of characters, a wide array of races, and loads and loads of conflict. Mass Effect 3, right from the opening, brings those conflicts to a head. The whole game is the ending as you close all of the threads that were opened in the previous games. There's no "right" way to do things in Mass Effect, and you resolve things in the way you best see fit. The game play is still very fun, just more of a shooter. There are set pieces in this game that make Uncharted jealous. As for the final fifteen minutes of the game, I thought it was beautiful. I have a hard time even relating to those who were outraged over it, but I understand that everyone reacts to these things differently. Gamers complained to the FCC and maybe even drew up some lawsuits over things the developers said in the forums or something, but let me quote the Mass Effect 1 instruction manual. "Your actions and decisions will determine the fate of the human race... and shape the future of an entire galaxy." I will argue to the death that BioWare grandly delivered on that promise they made five years ago. For me, this franchise is easily the most important series of games to come out of this console cycle.

So, I have two RPGs and an old school type adventure game. Not my usual selections. Compared to last year where my top two were Super Mario 3D Land and Skyward Sword which are definitely more in line with my usual selections.

So I have taken Jonny's advice and started playing Majora's Mask. There's no official thread for it yet, so I started this cuz I'm selfish and I want to talk about it.

I have never played much of this game. This and Zelda II are the only Zelda games I haven't completed. Well, and the CD-i games but those don't count. In fact, I got through the first temple for the very first time a year and a half ago. Before that, I had only ever screwed around in Clock Town and dealt with the monkeys. And I had done that stuff probably a half dozen times.

Obviously, I had problems getting into this game. Nintendo intentionally makes this game initially off putting, or at least lets you know this is not a typical Zelda game. Right from the start, they take away your horse AND transform you into a deku scrub, a state in which you remain for the first hour of the game. It's a ballsy move. But really, the three day structure is what kept me from jumping in right away. I didn't understand how it worked or what saved and what reset when you go back to the first day, it was just confusing.

So here's my big protip for anyone playing this game for the first time: Play the inverted song of time as soon as you possibly can. This slows down time by half which takes a lot of pressure off and lets you figure things out. It also lets you kind of forget about the time thing and play the game like you would any Zelda game, if you want to. Can't recommend this enough.

So I'm starting this game from where I left off a year and a half ago, right after the first temple. I'm also playing this off the Zelda Collections GameCube disc cuz when I started this current play through I didn't have the Virtual Console version. I did snag it when Club Nintendo offered it for free, but I can't transfer my GameCube save to that version and I don't want to play that opening bit for what would probably be the eighth time. So I'm gonna rough it. So far the only bug I've encountered is an occasionally choppy frame rate and some weird audio tics. Hopefully that's as bad as it gets.

I have not yet gotten into the Bomber's Notebook stuff. I'm kind of not sure how or when I should or where to start? I know I want to so I can get all the masks so I can become Fierce Deity Link cuz that sounds awesome. That'll happen sometime.

I will say I love how involved the areas before the temples are. You do A LOT of stuff before getting to that first temple. I'm once again doing A LOT of stuff before getting to the second temple. Some people may not like that, but I think it's great. Also, I just got the Goron mask which lets you roll around and is unlike anything I've ever done in a Zelda game. Also kind of reminded me of Kameo, but, you know, good.

Some more overall thoughts on the game, Clock Town is great and dense, the moon is great and iconic for a reason, the art direction of the game overall is fantastic and better than OoT and also looks GREAT in progressive scan on a HDTV. I also really love the cutscenes of both this game and OoT. The shot selection used is so simple and classical. It's timeless stuff.

I'm excited to finally play this game the whole way through. Hopefully this thread just gets moved to become the official Retroactive thread, but I suppose it's quite possible it won't and I just wasted a lot of time writing out my thoughts on the topic. Jump in and join me with the time wasting!

Jeremy Parish just tweeted about this and I of course checked it out. I dunno if every issue is gonna be about Nintendo (I don't think that's the case), but this first one is all about the NES. Love letters abound to Mother, Zelda, Ghouls and Ghosts, the genius of Mario 1-1, Mario rom hacks, Nintendo Power (just check out that cover image), and many more. You can download the pdf for free or buy the print version for $6.50.

I'm very sure there are people here who would like to read this so I figured I'd pass it along.

Kotaku just posted this and I figured I'd pass it along here. This is a look at some of the techniques Wind Waker used to look so damn pretty. I don't know the first thing about any of this stuff, but it would appear the game was graphically ahead of its time. Anyway, I thought it was cool.

The other day at work a deaf coworker randomly started following me around. I didn't realize it at first, but when I did, she attempted to communicate but I don't know sign language and writing utensils weren't around. So I kind of just started pointing at things and picking things up around the back room to see if that was what she wanted and did so until I pointed at a shelf where she nodded furiously. She only wanted a box off the top shelf. And then I realized holy ****, that was exactly like that part in Link's Awakening where that ghost randomly starts following you around.

Thanks Zelda! Couldn't have done it without you.

General Gaming / Mass Effect 3: Space Chat! (SPOILERS)
« on: March 07, 2012, 01:03:52 AM »
So Mass Effect 3 came out today. I'm already 12 hours in, which is the most I've played a video game in one day since Wind Waker launch day. Which was nine years ago. Almost to the day.

Thus far, ME 3 has even better shooting than 2, more organically designed levels (meaning there's not cover oddly placed in areas that normally wouldn't have it so you know a battle is about to break out), great character and conflict pay offs from previous games, thrilling set pieces, and DAMN HIGH STAKES. It's also a more linear affair with a smaller cast of characters and less meaningful conversations with them. So it's a trade-off. Still, this is the piece of video game fiction I care the most about and ME 3 is just cementing this fact. There has already been one choice I had to make that I agonized over more than either of the endings to the previous games. Those moments are why Mass Effect is something special.

I'm not going to post spoilers yet as I'm sure I'm further along than a lot of people. But they are coming. **** has gotten real, and I'm probably only a third of the way through the game.

Nintendo Gaming / I wanna talk about Metroid 2, dammit!
« on: November 27, 2011, 11:24:49 PM »
I'm sure a lot of this is that I haven't picked up Mario 3D Land yet but I feel utterly alone in my initial pilgrimage through Metroid 2.

So despite my superfandom in the Metroid franchise for the last 15 years of life, I have avoided Metroid 2. Mostly cuz I never owned it but probably more so from the terrible word of mouth that has surrounded this game. So here I am, four hours in, ten metroids remaining and I'm loving it.

I believe I'm in the minority, but I think this game holds up much better than the original Metroid, if only because I have played through the game thus far without once checking online for a map. I've seen NWR staffers tweeting about needing a map, but I've yet to have a problem without one. Yes, this is a far more linear affair, but I'd argue that makes it more playable. I would suspect that the suspend play on virtual console makes this game much more friendly as well. Just as a whole, I feel this game does a better job of showcasing the "Metroid progression" that I find eternally compelling.

Obviously it's not perfect. Samus' sprite is too large, the screen feels cramped, there's still copying and pasting of rooms (though far less than the original Metroid), and the production values are lower than any other Metroid. But I'm enjoying it despite these faults.

Nintendo Gaming / Alien Infestation
« on: August 29, 2011, 05:38:06 AM »
Normally I'm not even aware of the existence of licensed properties such as this, but Alien Infestation has caught my eye, mostly because it's a Metroidvania type game being developed by WayForward. Jeremy Parish wrote a lovely preview of it a month ago and he makes the game sound like everything I'm looking for in life. (You can read that preview here: http://www.1up.com/previews/aliens-infestation-metroidvania-game-by-mind-readers)

From the sounds of it, WayForward understands what works with both the Metroidvania genre and the Alien films. Even more exciting are the wholly new additions to the genre that this game looks to be making. I already love this game.

On a side note, it's interesting to me that Metroid's main filmic influence was Alien and now we have an Alien game who's biggest influence is Metroid. But everyone loves a good circle jerk, yeah?

Nintendo Gaming / Virtual Console pricing
« on: June 03, 2011, 01:55:02 AM »
Today it was revealed that Super Mario Land will be $3.99 while Alleyway and Radar Mission will be $2.99 when the Virtual Console drops next week. By this precedent, GBC games will likely be $4.99 - $5.99 and GBA games, when they're finally released, will be $6.99 - $7.99. This structure also fits in pretty well with the pricing established on the Wii Virtual Console.

I could be wrong. Maybe GBC games will be the same price as original Game Boy games or $3.99 - $4.99 and then GBA games will also be a dollar cheaper. That would be ideal, actually. I don't think GBC games should cost more than NES games and I don't think GBA games should cost as much as SNES games. Still, if my structure above is correct, that's not terrible.

Also, no more points! You just spend exact money on each game like every other store ever. I think that's something we'll all be pleased about.

Your thoughts.

I make video games, currently working for Electronic Arts on the latest Command & Conquer. Last year, the prediction was that Sony would win the next-gen war, that the PS3 would be the dominant console, just like the PS2 was.

That is no longer the case. The extremely strong performance of the Wii, combined with the miserable performance of Sony has revised pretty much everyone’s expectations. Right now, most of us here think the 360 will be on top for this generation, with the battle for second place between Sony and Nintendo (and that’s a major shock, as we’d nearly written Nintendo off for the non-handheld market.) Most of us still think Sony will beat off Nintendo, simply due to the older graphics on the Wii, but it’s not a sure thing.

My opinion - get the 360 and/or the Wii. Skip the PS3 unless there’s a big change in the near future. - Dr. Andrew Garrett, EA LA

He even sets up his juvenile attempt at humor with a seemingly harmless comment about Nintendo being awesome with handhelds. In fact, this whole thing could be construed as innuendo. Performance this, who's on top that, etc. What a sicko.

If you like good movies, you need to watch this immediately. It's technically a futuristic sci-fi flick (like Serenity!) but, more accurately, it's a commentary on today's political topics and what horrible things could happen if things keep going like this. Nintendo Gaming / The Official "I've played ExciteTruck at GameStop" thread
« on: November 07, 2006, 10:21:15 AM »
Yes, yes, I've played ExciteTruck at GameStop. Now who wants to touch me? I SAID WHO WANTS TO F*CKING TOUCH ME!

Anywho, Karl's editorial over this last weekend concerned this issue and now that I too have played the game, I agree with some stuff and I don't with others. I agree that the controls, while they worked about as well as one could hope, don't really add to the game too much. They don't make it better. They don't make it worse either, but it's a side step, not a step forward.

What I disagree with is that the game is pretty fun regardless. Racers aren't Karl's thing, and they aren't mine either, but I like Burnout and this is rather similar to that game. If you like arcade racers, ExciteTruck is your new best friend.

I also enjoyed the speaker's implementation. Perhaps it was just a novelty and I didn't give it the time to wear off, but it was kinda cool to hear the controller chime when I picked up an item or crunch when I smacked into another truck. I don't know why, but I liked it. And I'm now rather positive that Zelda and Red Steel will use the speaker even better.

I spose that's it.

So have YOU played ExciteTruck?

General Gaming / Halo 3 wants to rape you.

Good GOD.

$59.99 = Halo 3 Bare Bones edition
$69.99 = Halo 3 Collector's edition
$99.99 = Halo 3 Rape Time edition

If consumers allow publishers to set the precedent that $100 games are perfectly acceptable, my hobby of playing video games is over. I am personally vowing on this day to convince everyone considering buying that to do otherwise. This will not stand.

I suppose part of this is that I am a mild Halo admirer and therefore don't see the appeal of the Legendary Edition. I have to ask, "Would I spend that much on a Twilight Princess Hylian Hero edition, complete with mini Master Sword, making of featurettes, etc?" The answer is still NO.

$100 for a game is not acceptable, no matter what extras are being offered. So do your part. Friends don't let friends buy Halo 3 Legendary edition.
